Many people like to think history is something that is permanent and unchanging, but in reality, the way society collectively views it is always evolving. Different times interpret past events in different ways. And when it comes to history, there is a trinity of interaction that exists; there are people who are making it, the scribes that are recording it, and the bystanders who read about it later. Being a part of Everipedia, it has been my job of sorts to be a scribe. That is why I can relate to The_GodmotHER who documents what she thinks is not only important but cool on Genius (formerly Rap Genius). Chasten Buttigieg could very well be a part of history soon as the future First Husband in The White House. Izabella Kaminska has been fascinated by Roman history since her youth and is now an Editor for the Financial Times writing articles that scholars are sure to study later. If there is one thing for sure, she is not afraid to call out people from her account. I learned of that last week after I tweeted her page from the main Everipedia account with several mistakes on it (I should have known better not to proofread pages I make at 2 am). Although I am embarrassed by my typos, I am happy that she was concerned enough to point out the mistakes publically, it shows that she really cares and pays attention to detail. Christie Smythe is writing a book that is an expansion on the biggest story she ever reported, the arrest of Martin Shkreli. The account ran by Hassan Bargathi, educated fans for years and had a far-reaching impact on the hip-hop community. Unfortunately, Bargathi passed away this week, leaving many to mourn his loss. Bargathi was a sign of the extent of how far hip-hop has reached on a global scale, being born in Libya, raised in Jordan, and later going to school in Dubai. Bargathi will be missed and surely has and will inspire others with his passion for the culture. Christie Smythe on Linkedin Christie Smythe Christie Smythe has been covering business and legal proceedings for a number of years, but her biggest story by far came in 2015. It was at that time that Smythe broke the story of “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli’s arrest which became Bloomberg’s most read story of that year (she was writing for the outlet at the time). Today, Smythe is an associate editor for The Insurance Insider and is writing a book about Martin Shkreli. She has sure come a long way from her days reporting for local papers such as the St. Louis Business Journal and the Cape Cod Times. Armin van Bitcoin on Twitter Armin van Bitcoin In the world of Crypto Twitter, there are a number of characters that populate users timelines. Some of them are academics, others are traders, but the most intriguing have always been anonymous. Enter Armin van Bitcoin, a Bitcoin enthusiast (obviously) that takes his name from the world-famous Dutch DJ Armin Van Buuren. With nearly 40k followers to date, the topics of his tweets mostly deal with the trading and speculation of Bitcoin as well as commentary of the crypto space overall. Outside of Bitcoin, he is a married man and a proud father. If there is one thing for sure, it is that Armin’s offspring will understand crypto in such a different manner than us who lived before in a fiat-only world. Marko Jukic on Twitter Marko Jukic It’s not every day that you get to talk to someone that dedicates there life to the study of language and how to improve the teaching of it, but that’s exactly what I did when I interviewed Theoretical Linguist Marko Jukic for IQ TALK. Having a global perspective since a young age, Jukic has immersed himself in cultures and languages from around the world both in his youth and currently in adulthood. The origins of the Yang Gang are murky but it is accepted that the group started to gain a foothold following Yang’s appearance on the Joe Rogan Podcast. As a result of the Yang Gang, Yang himself has seen a catapult in donations and is likely to make it on the stage of the first democratic debate. Time will tell of the Yang Gang’ strength will last, but at least we have some dank memes for historians to study and analyze in the future. Erika Herzog’s profile picture on Twitter Erika Herzog Armed with years of experience as an information specialist, Herzog has made the curation and organization of data as the centerpiece of her career. Herzog would even volunteer her time editing Wikipedia and was the Secretary and on the Board of Wikimedia NYC. As Secretary, Herzog was vital in securing a Wikimedia Plan Grant worth $74,000 and led efforts to accelerate growth. Yet, in her attempts to take this passion to the hallowed halls of Wikipedia as well as further the conversation about gender bias and harassment on the platform, she was met with hostility and was banned from the Wikimedia Foundation in August 2018. Sherman Lee At the nexus of blockchain and artificial intelligence is where you can find Sherman Lee who has his toes in both fields. The Hong Kong-based entrepreneur is the co-founder of the Raven Protocol which provides deep learning training in a distributed manner for neural networks. In addition, he is a partner at the accelerator Zeroth.AI which focuses on investing in companies in the artificial intelligence and machine learning spaces. For his education, Lee graduated from UC Berkeley where he studied computer science and linguistics. Toritseju Blessing Kaka Based out of Nigeria, Toritseju Blessing Kaka is doing everything he can to bring blockchain technology to the African nation. Kaka first became involved in crypto in 2016 as a user of Steemit and became an ambassador to the platform soon after. He later became an active participant in the EOS community and became an ambassador to projects such as the block producer EOS Nation and the African Community Champion for the tech education platform Carmel. Sometimes, you have to take a step back to appreciate that we live in a time where you can relate to an event that is happening thousands of miles away from you on the other side of the world. On this week’s edition of Everipedia Culture Roundup, we take a look at the story of teenager William Connolly who went viral for egging Australian politician Fraser Anning who was previously criticized for his insensitive comments towards Muslims during the aftermath of the Christchurch shootings. The tip would lead to the formation of the FBI’s Operation Varsity Blues investigation which culminated in the arrest of 50 people involved in the $25 million college admissions scheme. (1) neutral points of view (2) verifiability (3) no original research Yet, to many, Wikipedia has become a danger zone of “fake news” and misinformation that cannot be corrected by anyone other than those on the company’s editing team. #1: Maintaining Neutral Points of View While still popularly used and looked at, Wikipedia isn't shy of its public shortcomings — the Wiki database limits its pages to those that are considered to be “popular,” “public figures,” or those “important enough.” In today’s political climate, free speech protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution couldn't be more appropriate, and having editors on this glorified pedestal deciding what is worth listing and what isn't, is outside of their jurisdiction. Sorry not sorry, you guys. #2: Maintaining Information Integrity For years, Wikipedia has made it implicitly known to the world that it really doesn’t care about authorship or the page’s subject. But why? In the years since Moghadam and Sanger left their respective positions, they have come to agree on at least one fact — if history has shown anything, taking on Wikipedia is no easy task. With registered users, almost anyone is able to go into a page and edit its content; making it very difficult for it to be changed back unless reported. #3: Conducting Due Diligence with Research Whether you’re a company executive, lawyer, entrepreneur, or necessary part to a moving piece, good research is everything. More importantly, doing your due diligence with respect to the information you present to others is a make or break in life. There doesn't need to be any more fake news bullshit, because we’re all capable of verifying on our own what is true and what is not. encyclopedias and other research-friendly sites should be trusted to be reliable and complete, with truthful and accurate information. But: Until now, there has been no startup that has attempted to or even come close to posing a threat to the online database giant. Everipedia’s mission and team have provided a new level of positive threats that seek to bring the world of online information back to a respected and reliable atmosphere. Positive Threat #1: The Blockchain Train Unlike Wikipedia, anyone and anything can have a page on the Everipedia database. Unfortunately for exchange users, he was the sole holder to the private keys of the exchange’s cold wallet which in layman’s terms means he was the only person who had the password to the exchange’s funds. The amount of crypto in the wallet totaled a staggering $190 million. This effectively means that the funds are impossible to access, and leaves thousands of customers without access to their funds. Although there is speculation about whether he is actually dead or faked his death, the fact of the matter is that an exchange of that size could have avoided this failure by having a multi-sig system for cold storage instead. As crypto evolves, I would not be surprised if regulators look at what happened in the QuadrigaCX debacle as they craft rules for the industry.
