With a quick google search or reverse image lookup you can find the original source in most cases. Some of the criminals will take it a step further and swap out pictures, but again these can be quickly identified. Even if you haven’t worked on server and system administrations, you can do it ! You can learn AWS and this is what I want you to understand: Operating Systems are not dead yet ! They will, and gradually, but IMHO not for the next 5 years ! Don’t start by learning AWS, learn Linux ( or Windows server if you’re a Microsoft fan). Some people say that a DevOps is a modern System Administrator.Even if I don’t agree with this, DevOps is a culture before being a job, but somehow this could be true in some contexts.. The first thing you need to start learning is creating and managing an EC2 machine ! We’re still in the virtualization and the OS layers. Start Simple ! Just like any other new thing to learn in IT and development, we always start by the famous Hello World example. Not kind of Hello World but start by : this Creating a free tier EC2 machine on your default VPC, with a public IP with an open Security Group and default settings ! It will not be the most secured and optimised machine you’ll create but it’s okay to start. If you’d like to learn at the same time : which type of EC2 instance to use, the settings of your Security Group, how Elastic Ip works, how tagging system works, how to create a subnet and how to use it, ..etc You will have a lot of concepts to understand at the same time and you will lose your path of learning ! Start simple then move on to more complicated topics. Study Networking Even with AWS networking is simpler than on-premise networking systems, but learning how to : create a subnet make it public or private firewall concepts ports, Ip addresses and CIDR other networking stuff is important. Don’t learn networking for AWS, learn general concepts about networking and you’ll find it intuitive once you’ll try to use AWS. Move Gradually to other Skills and Services Acquiring new skills is a path where you must have the skill A to move to the skill B, so be patient and organised. You will find some tens or probably thousands of services in AWS. If you already have system and networking skills, it will be more and more easier to move and learn other AWS services. Reverse Engineer like a Hacker Try creating an AWS EC2 machine to host Wordpress, make it on a private subnet, create a public Nginx server, configure it to serve your Wordpress website, create another clone of your first machine, make Nginx load-balance the traffic to both servers .. I know you can just start with ELB but there is nothing more helpful to learn a tool than reverse engineering it ! Don’t be Ashamed to Ask I know that a beginner could have some questions that could be considered as a n00bie questions. But any expert started as a n00b before being an expert ! N00b questions are the most seen in stackoverflow and other stackexchange forums even if they received a negative number of votes. In some forums, you may have answers like the let me google that for you answers but this doesn’t mean that you should not ask. Sure, finding the answer without any help is valuable and helps more than asking the first question that comes to your mind in a forum but don’t be ashamed to ask, if you need this. There Is No “DevOps Engineer” Even “DevOps Engineers” don’t call themselves this way.. at least most of them. This role name is more used by recruiters and headhunters more than anyone else but now since it’s common to say “DevOps Engineer” I will be using it in this article! , What is DevOps ? DevOps is not a just a role or a team, it started with a movement, a philosophy or better: a culture. Don’t Just Focus On Tools DevOps is not tooling and tooling is not engineering. A good engineer is the one who has the capacity to learn new technologies, someone who never stops learning! What are some technologies you are learning this period ? Ask About Behaviour & Methodology DevOps, agile, lean, Kanban are sets of behavioral and cultural skills and checklists. DevOps focus on modernizing teams before technologies. I worked with companies where technologies and tools are underused because of cultural problems. What are some cultural problems you have seen during your last experiences and what solutions you imagined to make things better ? A Cross-Functional Person Some “DevOps engineers” comes from system administration, others come from development teams, but the ideal DevOps should come from both ops and dev teams and can speak the language of each team. They have actually attempted to solve the blockchain trilemma, potentially positioning their design as one that will go down in history as transformative for the industry. Why read this: Understanding the core concepts of Avalanche will simultaneously enlighten you on interoperability and scalability principles that will be encountered repeatedly throughout the industry. Another very interesting thing about Avalanche's documentation is how they segmented the information. They have split the architecture into four (4) separate documents that are domain-specific, Platform, Conesnus, Token, and Stablecoins; giving the readers an ability to not be overwhelmed by an onslaught of information and allowing them to be selective in what portion of the project they actually want to learn more about. Harmony One 📑 Link: https://harmony.one/whitepaper.pdf 3 🤔 Difficulty: 22 pages ⏰ Length: When compared to other crypto-specific white papers, Harmony did a phenomenal job providing comprehensive visual explanations throughout their documentation. Why read this: This will serve you as a perfect template/diving board into other documents by priming your mind with technical concepts while not overloading you with mathematical nuances that are not necessary for investors. Many other projects either overcomplicate their documentation and load them with information only a developer/scholar would understand — which dissuades many people from actually learning; Harmony did a great job succinctly covering every element in a digestible format. Decentralized Finance 📑 Link: Decentralized Finance (Sept, 2020) OxFord 3 🤔 Difficulty: 32 pages ⏰ Length: Decentralized finance is the future of all finance. This document in particular addresses the critical ideologies that are floating around DEFI on the regulatory, enterprise, and individual levels. Why read this: The authors manage to so illustriously touch on the outer regions of where it intersects with another lesser talked about, but equally as important, subject matter, regtech (regulatory technology). Reading this will clarify how DEFI is thought about and where the pain points in traditional finance that hinder a seamless transition exist. Concepts of scalability, sustainability, interoperability, and composability are neatly compacted into a fluid technical conversation about regulation and where the evolution of distributed ledger technology stems from. After reading this, you will also understand how the world’s largest institutions (namely BlackRock) have been approaching the inevitable convergence of digital finance and decentralization and even get a powerful look at its Aladdin platform. Why read this: Second-layer solutions are the technology that allows for expanding operational efficiencies and bringing Bitcoin to the global stage as a payments network. Why read this: The design principles of Asset-backed, Crypto-backed, and algorithmic stablecoins are addressed, guided by very friendly diagrams/graphs, Coinbase’s stablecoin whitepaper is a must-read for those that are interested in the regulatory realities and truly want to develop an understanding of how “money” is classified and built-in crypto. UniSwap V2 / UniSwap V3 📑 / Link: Uniswap V2 UniSwap V3 6 🤔 Difficulty: 10 pages/ 9 pages ⏰ Length: DEXs (Decentralized Exchanges) are critical to developing a robust natively Web3 economy/token marketplace. Uniswap pioneered the AMM (automated market maker) model and has become the base building block that is plugging into nearly every other decentralized financial application to provide exchange services. Why read this: It is necessary to understand how the mechanisms that power trading and swapping tokens, and how the concepts of a bonding curve and liquidity pools relate to value accrual. AAVE V1/AAVE V2 📑 / Link: AAVE V1 AAVE V2 6 🤔 Difficulty: 21 pages/ 12 pages ⏰ Length: AAVE is a legendary protocol in the eyes of many Crypto OGs. The project started from a humble beginning under the brand ETHLEND way back in 2017. Always focused on the lending/borrowing space, AAVE evolved into the leading protocol for crypto money markets. Why read this: It is the original project that first introduced truly decentralized on-chain lending via a pooled collateral model. First and foremost, if you read this article, you will be well versed in the origination of modern-day crypto-based lending platforms and understand how exactly the logic works under the hood. This documentation is one of the DEFI foundations and therefore is must read (even for non-technical people) for a genuine comprehension of the industry. No problem… Over the course of the last cycle, the loose degen nature of crypto became the industry's crux; a double-edged sword that inspired quick iteration but blinded from quality inspection. bull market As we shake off the effects of the last market collapse & prepare to tread fast into a new economic environment, it is of utmost importance to put forth all the more effort into our decision-making processes. One of the most pragmatic, underutilized & effective ways to implement quality control in the crypto decision-making process is by monitoring a project’s attention to detail in its whitepaper. What is a Whitepaper❔ A white paper is an authoritative marketing/technical document intended to inform its readers concisely about a complex issue & guide them to understanding the author/entity's position on it. Why is a Whitepaper important❔ Ultimately, the presence of a whitepaper(s) distinguishes thought leaders & expresses confidence in mastery of the subject matter. Whitepapers serve as foundational brand documentation that can be used for disseminating quality information indefinitely. They help readers understand issues, solve problems, & make decisions. When Should a project create its Whitepaper ❔ Yesterday! Creating a whitepaper can be, and usually is, very time-consuming. It is an intense, iterative process that can take ~3 months to complete. While it is possible to spin something up in 7 days, the document will lack depth; if this is the approach that a project takes, that is ok, as long as the document is updated as the project progresses. Are there Different Types of Whitepapers ❔ Generally speaking, there are 3 different types of whitepapers based on intention: -) General Purpose -) Academic -) Marketing 80% of all real crypto whitepapers will be academic, 10% will be marketing & 10% will be general purpose. Regardless of the type of whitepaper a crypto project decides to create or their industry, the document will have to be an absolute content powerhouse. What goes into a Whitepaper❔ Everything! It is the brains, the brawn & the beauty. Visual formatting & branding are important but alone do not define the quality of any whitepaper. You can put lipstick on any pig. The single most important thing in ascertaining the quality of any whitepaper is the content. The content for a whitepaper includes: technical long-form writing to describe complex concepts. Data in the form of charts, graphs & workflows to support ideas. mockups of the product detailed & well-researched arguments & more… There will need to be market analysis & industry research conducted with all resources/references compiled. Of course! We cannot forget to include a succinct copy in the form of adequately positioned insights/quotes throughout the document. 🔑 — Key Pointers For A Whitepaper — 🔑 Min # Word Count: 2,500 | Max # Word Count: ~12,500 Min # Page Count: ~ 8 | Max # Page Count: ~ 40 Min # References: ~ 5 | Max # References: ~ 25 Min # Visual Data: ~3 | Max # Visual Data: ~15 *There are just rules of thumb, it is absolutely ok to beyond this. The Structure of a Crypto Whitepaper This must include the name of the project, a succinct catchphrase to describe the nuance of the subject matter& date of issuance. Marketing & General purpose variants should ideally have some form of branding/logo provided. If it is an academic document, the visual presentation is all about formatting rather than branding, here it is commonplace to find an executive summary placed front & center. Cover Page {1pg} A simple outline of the content structure broken down by Headline & page #. If this is not provided in a whitepaper, that is absolutely ok it is not a dealbreaker; however, the presence of it will all the further impress the audience. Content Index Page {1pg} Some form of content to foreshadow the information & set the tone of the document. This can be a “letter from the founder”, an “endorsement” by another industry leader, or something simpler such as a deeply specific “quote” from history. Interlude {1pg} A good introduction can typically be defined by its length. Here a project will introduce the subject matter/product of the document, succinctly discuss the current market state, briefly touch on the problem area, & interest the reader in learning more. Introduction {1–2pg} Thorough research & market analysis is an absolute foundation for the quality of a whitepaper. This section should be supported with Data & include a good deal of external references. Market / Subject matter background {2-3pg} As mentioned earlier in the document, a problem statement demands its own section & should follow the market research. If the market / subject matter background was well articulated the reader should deduce the problem & uncover the nuances of that problem here. Problem Statement {1pg} Another element that is deeply tied to research; existing solutions & their providers must be noted & explained. Competition must be addressed. Possible solutions must be outlined & proposed. Solution(s) & Competitive landscape {1–4pg} This is where the solution’s technical implementation elements are described. Frameworks/tech stacks / APIs or operational procedures (i.e. consensus mechanism throughput). Technical/Smart Contract Architecture {1–3pg} This section can be presented as a standalone document, composed of: Tokenomics {2–5pg} Issuance & Allocation — supply utilization Token Emission Supply release schedule Token Utility — application/use of token Token Standard — technical specifications of a token (ERC-20, BEP-20, etc.) Token Listings — planned & existing Token Lockups — security for circulating supply Fund Distribution — how raised funds will be used An understanding of how the project/product will be developed & owned must be addressed. The legal implications of operating through a DAO, foundation, or VASP will highlight the intentions of the project founders & shine a light on the true “decentralization” of a proposed solution. Organizational Structure {1–2pg} Standard practice in any industry; providing images, profile backgrounds, links & contact information for the members of the team is important to securing a proper professional image & stand out in the pseudonymous world of crypto. Team {1pg} Advisors {1pg} This is not always a necessity, but it is a definite nice-ity. Having credible people with strong reputations support your cause will always draw positive attention. Partnerships {1pg} Odds are that in order to have a project succeed it will need to be adopted by many people. Partnerships are the most effective bootstrapping mechanism in the community-building arsenal. Auditing Audits are one of the most desirable things to look for in a whitepaper. If a project has completed an audit of its smart contract(s) that shows a high level of commitment to quality. More likely than not, a serious project that raises money has conducted some form of audit. Crucial. If a whitepaper does not have this, it is an inexcusable red flag. A roadmap should be provided, not necessarily to be perfectly followed but to have a strong sense of direction. It is ok for things to be completed in different cadences than what is written, but a fundamental rule is that at some point everything should be achieved (unless the project pivots). Roadmap / Game Plan {1pg} This is the final block of content that should be able to wrap up all of the key points discussed throughout the paper & express a proposition of what is ahead. Conclusion {1–2pg} Possibly the most underappreciated element of any whitepaper, References will give insight into the quality of research & due diligence conducted by the project. The fewer references there are, the less reliable the information in the document will be. Usually, references are placed as the last or 2nd-to-last section in a whitepaper. References {1pg} One of the last pages in a whitepaper, the resources & links section will give the readers outlets to learn more about the project. Be sure to include links to the official website, blogs, social media channels, trading pools, on-chain smart contract explorers & whatever else may be relevant. Working in the fast-growing cryptocurrency industry can be both exhilarating and fulfilling. However, like the digital assets it deals with, the crypto job market can be highly unstable. A report from on January 17th showed that the current bear market has caused a loss of over 29,000 jobs since April 2022, with about 2,000 of those cuts coming in the first two weeks of 2023.
