Our shared interest in the potential of cryptocurrency brought us together at a meeting of the Polish libertarian party. From the outset, we saw cryptocurrency not just as a financial tool, but as a means of social change and a way to increase an individuals’ agency. Szymon Sypniewicz: Our initial foray into the crypto world involved working on several projects and startups, most of which didn't take off as we hoped. However, these experiences were invaluable as they paved the way for the inception of Ramp. The core idea behind Ramp was to bridge the gap between users operating in the fiat world and the applications native to the crypto world. We envisioned a platform that would act as a gateway, or a "ramp", facilitating seamless interactions between these two realms. Our goal was to ensure that cryptocurrencies could function in a truly decentralized manner. As we developed Ramp, we faced skepticism and questions about why we didn't simply create another crypto exchange. But our vision was clear - we wanted to offer something fundamentally different. We aimed to provide a platform that would enable crypto wallets, exchanges, NFT marketplaces, and gaming companies to integrate crypto payment infrastructure seamlessly. This would allow users to purchase crypto assets without the need to switch between multiple apps. Looking back, our journey has been filled with challenges that have taught us invaluable lessons which made each milestone reached that much more satisfying. The Bankruptcy of the Canadian Digital Asset Lender At the , the prominent Canadian digital assets lender Voyager Digital filed for bankruptcy, citing market volatility and the unexpected collapse of Three Arrows Capital. Just a few weeks before the filing, it froze withdrawals, trading, and deposits on its platform. On July 13, 2022, one month after the suspension of all withdrawals, swaps, and account transfers, Celsius and its connected entities filed for bankruptcy. beginning of July 2022 announcing Celsius, Voyager, and Three Arrows have collapsed financially. Risky investments, DeFi vulnerabilities, and the crypto collapse led to the insolvency of each company. In its bankruptcy petition, Voyager disclosed that it has more than $110 million in cash and digital assets worth approximately $1.3 billion. These assets include claims against the crypto hedge firm Three Arrows Capital totalling over $650 million. The failure of the Voyager platform wreaked havoc on the crypto sector as a whole. Despite its popularity, the platform failed due to questionable business decisions, such as providing customers funds to 3 Arrows Capital as an unsecured loan. This move has financially destroyed thousands of retail investors worldwide. Voyage to the Bank: Where is the Money? , Voyager's loans comprised nearly half of its total assets, and approximately sixty percent of that loan book consisted of loans to Three Arrows. The filing came out in public at a time when industry experts are increasing their scrutiny of Voyager's business practices, specifically how the Canadian-listed firm stated in marketing materials that investors' accounts were insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). FDIC insurance would protect bank-held cash deposits of up to $250,000. According to Coppola With Voyager exercising negligence and retail investors are asking, “Where is my money?”. Everyone is thinking of ways to fill the hole in the balance sheet of these players. But the question is how? With bankruptcy proceedings taking their own time, the answer may not be that simple. DeFi Ethos Comes to the Rescue of Voyager Creditors and Token Holders by Offering a Recovery Token Program Ethos announced a r for Voyager's former users. VGX holders and creditors can ETHOS tokens with proof of a valid claim. While there are no assurances by Ethos, such recovery tokens have assisted victims in repairing harm. For many, the losses have been excruciating, but the Ethos founders provide a glimmer of optimism and a new way for the whole cryptocurrency sector. ecovery token programme claim Voyager and Ethos once collaborated on projects. Voyager used Ethos' system for years at first to sign up new customers and manage their cryptocurrency assets, processing more than $5 billion through Ethos' crypto rails. A group of eight seasoned crypto specialists and former Ethos developers will soon release Ethos 2.0. Ethos Plans to Rescue Voyager Creditors and Token Holders 

Lingke Wang and the Ethos team have recently raised over $46 million in order to simplify and modernize the archaic life insurance industry. What’s your background, and what are you working on? I’m the CTO and co-founder of , a life insurance company that my co-founder Peter Colis and I created to combat all of the things that typically deter people from purchasing life insurance; such as pushy agents, doctors appointments, hidden fees, and complex paperwork. All of these combined equate to a grueling 10–15 week process to get a policy that in some cases may not even be right for the customer. Ethos We’ve made the process for getting a life insurance policy fast, easy and inexpensive, turning a process that was once like going to the DMV to shopping online. Our online model replaces the traditional route and uses technology and predictive analytics to help families get the policies they want and need — 99% of our applicants and policyholders had no medical exam, blood test or lengthy underwriting process. Before Ethos, I was at Stanford Business School and rooming with Peter. We started in the summer of 2015, a company also in life insurance space that helps people sell permanent life insurance policies that they can no longer afford to institutional investors. At a high level, we helped people who couldn’t afford to keep their policies, because their financial needs changed after retirement. Ovid’s goal was to help connect folks to buyers in a transparent manner and eliminate the need to work through life settlement brokers who often took large fees. Ovid Ovid was our foot in the door to the life insurance space, and we built a lot of infrastructure around it to get it up and running. It remains a successful business, but we realized in order for us to have a real, meaningful impact, we needed to get to the root of the problem in the life insurance space: offer a product that ensures families are appropriately protected considering their financial means. What motivated you to get started with your company? When I was 20 and in college, I was persuaded into buying a permanent life insurance policy that I didn’t need. The agent who convinced me it would be a good investment vehicle, even though I had no spouse or children. As time went on and the costs quickly mounted, I realized the financial mistake I had made and lost most of what I paid into it. This unfortunate situation is all too common. Fast forward to studying with Peter at Stanford Business School, we revisited my experience and realized life insurance was broken. Traditional life insurance has existed for centuries and is reliant on commission-driven agents and misaligned incentives. As previously mentioned, we became set on fixing the industry — starting with Ovid and then Ethos. What went into building the initial product? Peter and I conceptualized Ethos in June 2016. Over the next year, we built technology and partnered with forward-thinking insurance companies to create the Ethos product. We launched quietly in select markets in late 2017 and worked to better refine our product. In the following months, we worked to gather user insights and automate workflow processes with our 100-year-old carrier partner. We iterated rapidly during the soft launch, translating our learnings into product enhancements and releasing new code multiple times a day. In late January 2018, we launched nationwide, maintaining our growth mindset, optimizing for speed of learning, and evolving the product in pursuit of delivering an excellent end-to-end customer experience. Ultimately, our vision — to protect the life you are building and the people you love — resonated deeply with our partners and afforded us opportunities to innovate. As we continue to follow this mission, we intend to find ways of increasing coverage and use data to inform new products that allow us to protect those who traditional insurance companies have deemed “uninsurable,” often because of antiquated risk assessment models and methodologies. How have you attracted users and grown your company? Overall, we’re a product that is bought, not sold. We take pride in having no commissioned sales agents because that’d go against what we set out to change. We’ve designed a product that puts the customer first and condensed a 15-week process to a 10-minute online application. We also focus heavily on educating customers to help them easily navigate the process of getting life insurance. With a combination of ongoing efforts from our engineering, product, marketing, and customer support teams, we continue to attract customers and equip them with life insurance that’s affordable, transparent and simple. For that reason, our word of mouth continues to increase — nearly a third of our customers were referred by another customer. On top of that, our customers are saving money on their monthly life insurance premium. For example, our . customer Adrian Limon saved $80/month by switching to Ethos What are your goals for the future? We want to become a market leader in the life insurance industry. There are multiple paths to get there, but what’s most important is continuing to provide our customers with a high-quality experience and delivering on our promise of being a trusted partner in protecting their families. One of the biggest challenges that we face is the general lack of education around life insurance, and that’s due to the traditional nature of the industry. Many people assume it’s too expensive, have fears of being upsold or just don’t want to deal with a 12-week process that involves getting medical exams — but we’ve eliminated those things to provide a simple and cost-effective way to protect your family. Our goal is to continue to demonstrate that and help people realize we’ve made life insurance accessible. What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced and the obstacles you’ve overcome? Stepping into the life insurance industry, one that hadn’t changed in over 50 years, was an obstacle in and of itself. We knew it was going to be tough to build partnerships and products in an industry that we were essentially up-ending. As a way to overcome that, we remained mission-driven and gained a lot of trust through being focused on the customer experience and pushing the industry forward. Our goal is to help as many people as possible protect their family, so I ask myself every day “is this thing that I’m doing, going to help me achieve that goal?” Making deliberate incremental advances is key. Have you found anything particularly helpful or advantageous in or outside of work? Deciding on how to use my time was and remains critical. When you start a company it’s like your baby and you want to be everywhere at once. It took me a long time to learn what’s really going to move the dial and what’s not. There are only so many hours in the day, so I figure out where my hours are going to make the most impact. Today the things I primarily focus on are bettering the product and understanding our customer’s needs. In terms of what I do outside of work to overcome work hurdles and stay focused, I make sure to get at least 7 hours of sleep. When you’re running a company it’s hard to put up boundaries for your own well-being. But at the same time, I know I make better decisions when I’m well rested. When I was younger I was all about burning the midnight oil, but with more experience under my belt, I’ve seen the diminishing returns when you’re not taking care of yourself. Don’t let perfection prevent done. Putting all your energy into building a “perfect” product without shipping it and getting real customer feedback will hinder your ability to grow. While Bitcoin has achieved a formidable status as a store of value, the rise of Ordinals and inscriptions clearly demonstrated users want to use it for more than just that. Beyond simply holding, there’s a massive and rising demand for Bitcoin-based applications, fungible and non-fungible assets, and scalable payments. However, the question is: How does Bitcoin satisfy this desire while preserving the core principles it was based on? The Risks of Inaction There has been great progress made gradually in the Bitcoin ecosystem, but the inability to innovate quickly has led to a concerning trend: a significant amount of BTC is continually being siphoned away from its ecosystem. Despite Lightning Network’s relative success, Ethereum now hosts more BTC than all Bitcoin Layer 2s combined. Even worse, an increasing number of BTC are held on centralized exchanges, which reintroduces the same custody risks from the fiat system that Bitcoin was originally built to mitigate. This is a clear signal that if we, the Bitcoin community, don't offer compelling solutions, others will step in with solutions that may not align with Bitcoin's core values of decentralization and security. If we don’t act, we risk losing control over the direction in which Bitcoin and the broader crypto industry evolve. To that point, Ethereum’s history provides a cautionary tale. As early as 2016, Bitcoin developers Peter Todd and Greg Maxwell highlighted numerous architectural issues with its design. However, the Bitcoin ecosystem’s progress over the past eight years has been relatively slow, while the broader industry has pursued questionable new solutions like Proof-of-Stake, account-based models, and sharding—all of which can undermine the decentralization and security that Bitcoin stands for. We can no longer afford to make the same mistakes. The demand for new Bitcoin-based assets and use cases presents a pivotal opportunity. It calls for a Bitcoin Renaissance. Let's seize this moment to redirect the crypto industry towards a path that adheres to Bitcoin's values, principles, and architecture. The State of Play At its core, Bitcoin was envisioned as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, not a peer-to-contract system like most smart contract platforms, or a peer-to-sequencer system like current rollups. Bitcoin’s brilliance lies in the Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism and the UTXO model, which offers numerous advantages over the now prevalent account-based model. Instead of recording balances, UTXOs track individual currency units, similar to how physical cash works. This enables the creation of genuine bearer assets—assets owned by whoever holds the private key. Most importantly, Bitcoin’s emphasis is on verification, not computation, which is what blockchains excel at. Computation and complex verification should be pushed off-chain—into protocols that don’t necessarily need to be blockchains. Luckily, the Bitcoin community has proposed many novel ideas for how to do this. Peter Todd’s work on single-use seals is especially notable here, as it paves the way for innovative scaling solutions based on client-side validation, including colored coins, RGB, Ordinals, and Atomicals. The community has also explored and built various Layer 2 solutions with different consensus mechanisms, bridging solutions, and security assumptions. However, despite the richness of the ideas, the ecosystem growth over the years has been slow. This is primarily due to two reasons: Bitcoin’s lack of programmability, and its conservative ethos. It’s (intentionally) very difficult to reach a social consensus on any protocol-level changes to Bitcoin, which is also why we’re having these conversations today. Ushering in The Bitcoin Renaissance If we ought to usher in a Bitcoin renaissance, we should have the following in mind: Our solutions must satisfy user’s needs without sacrificing Bitcoin’s values and without requiring soft or hard forks. Luckily, this is all possible by leveraging the layered approach. We already have some asset issuance protocols, including Ordinals, Runes, BRC-20, and Taproot Assets on the base chain. These directly benefit and simultaneously contribute to Bitcoin’s unmatched security. However, Bitcoin’s limited programmability means that users can’t do much with these assets beyond simply holding them, which is why we need a fully-expressive programmable layer on top. This layer should serve as the financial hub for assets on the Bitcoin chain. Then, we need a secure bridge between these two layers. We can use a typical two-way peg, but Cipher Wang’s (author of the RGB++ protocol) new innovative solution, Universal Isomorphic Binding (UIB), is better. It employs point-to-point mapping between the UTXOs of two chains, eliminating the need for third-trusted parties, which is a giant leap compared to current bridging solutions. Once we’ve established the programmable layer and the bridge, we can build another scalability and privacy-focused layer on top. Solutions for this include client-side-validation-based protocols, Open (partially-signed) Transactions, Nostr, Chaumian e-cash, and peer-to-peer markets. Then, we can use channels to connect all of this, and even connect Web2 and Web3—birthing the new Bitcoin-based Web5 paradigm. Web5 means using cryptography, peer-to-peer technology, and other Web3-native solutions to fix and incorporate into Web2. However, Bitcoin’s limited programmability means that users can’t do much with these assets beyond simply holding them, which is why we need a fully-expressive programmable layer on top. This layer should serve as the financial hub for assets on the Bitcoin chain. Then, we need a secure bridge between these two layers. We can use a typical two-way peg, but Cipher Wang’s (author of the RGB++ protocol) new innovative solution, Universal Isomorphic Binding (UIB), is better. It employs point-to-point mapping between the UTXOs of two chains, eliminating the need for third-trusted parties, which is a giant leap compared to current bridging solutions. Solutions for this include client-side-validation-based protocols, Open (partially-signed) Transactions, Nostr, Chaumian e-cash, and peer-to-peer markets. Then, we can use channels to connect all of this, and even connect Web2 and Web3—birthing the new Bitcoin-based Web5 paradigm. Web5 means using cryptography, peer-to-peer technology, and other Web3-native solutions to fix and incorporate into Web2.
