This year, MicroStrategy bought over $700 million in Bitcoin. That’s on top of more than $6 billion acquired in prior years. Not bad for a company that’s barely profitable and loses money in most quarters. It won’t. It doesn’t need to. It’s not spending its own money. It’s spending its investors’ money. An asset with no intrinsic value More precisely, it plans to sell $21 billion in stock and raise $21 billion through debt offerings. A corporation is dumping stock on speculators and gaming the financial system for cheap credit. Guess what? That’s how the system works. Bonds are crowdsourced loans. Often, it’s easier to get money from Boomers and their financial planners than banks. What about equity? It’s free money for corporations, literally conjured out of thin air and priced at the market’s opinion of the company’s worth. Stocks do only three things: Give corporations a cheap source of funding for business activities and executive compensation.
Give corporate executives an easy way to manipulate the public’s perception of the company’s value with buybacks to artificially raise stock prices and dividends/splits to reward shareholders.
Give shareholders a way to game the tax system. They pay less on capital gains than income and protect their profits in tax-advantaged savings accounts. You buy bonds because your financial advisor says they’re a safe way to beat the returns you get on a savings account. You buy stocks because you think you can sell them to somebody else in the future for more than you paid for them. Flipping the script MicroStrategy is a break-even business at best, but it figured out a secret: People think equity has value, but it doesn’t. MicroStrategy trades that equity for bitcoin. Its, er, strategy, depends on selling equity for Bitcoin and waiting for its price to go up. When Microstrategy puts those Bitcoins into its treasury, they count it as an asset on the balance sheet. When Bitcoin’s price goes up, Microstrategy’s balance sheet grows. The business becomes more valuable. As a result, its stock looks more attractive. Speculators can justify buying its bonds and inflated shares. Can’t lose As long as Bitcoin’s price goes up, MicroStrategy doesn’t need profits, revenue, cash flow, or anything else to boost its share price. It can run its business into the ground. Its assets will make the balance sheet look good. The best part of that plan? People will still buy shares of MSTR stock because of the book value! Is it sustainable? In theory, MicroStrategy never has to sell its Bitcoins. It can borrow against its treasury, sell more shares, or take out more debt. In reality, MicroStrategy will have to sell or trade its Bitcoins at some point. Eventually, people will realize they don’t need to buy MicroStrategy stock to get exposure to Bitcoin. They’ll switch to Coinbase stock or the Bitcoin ETFs to gamble on Bitcoin’s price. Once that happens, Microstrategy will lose a vital source of funding and won’t have enough profits to make up for it. Banks and bond buyers will stop giving it money. It will have to sell some Bitcoins or go out of business. If it goes out of business, creditors or trustees will sell the bitcoin as part of the bankruptcy process. Even if all goes swimmingly, shareholders may force Microstrategy’s CEO, Michael Saylor, to sell some Bitcoins and invest the profits into the business. A man, a plan, a scam, macsanal Panama Yes, the stock market is a massive subsidy for corporations and corporate officers. But it’s a scam that the US government has incentivized people to buy into with retirement funds and private savings. It kicks back income in the form of dividends and buybacks. Those businesses do have a value, even stock prices never reflect that value, only what somebody’s willing to pay for the chance to sell their shares at a higher price in the future. The question is, will Bitcoin’s price go up long enough to justify Michael Saylor’s strategy? And, if it does, what will that say about the “intrinsic value” of the rest of the stock market? Too often, businesses are stuck using tech that’s hard to understand and time-consuming to work with. Whether it’s our laundry management system, Washd, or the various IT infrastructure projects we work on, we’re all about creating tools that people can actually enjoy using. Our mission is simple: make technology that connects people and businesses in meaningful ways, without the steep learning curve. Whether it’s Washd for laundries or other specialized tools, we focus on making user-friendly products that allow everyone to feel confident and happy when using them. How avilo Achieved Product-Market Fit When we launched Washd, it became clear early on that we were solving real problems for businesses. Laundry management had long been stuck in the past, with inefficient processes and outdated systems. Our approach was simple: create a tool that’s easy to use and makes laundry operations faster and more efficient. And it worked. As we expanded around Norway, the positive feedback from clients confirmed we were meeting a genuine need in the market.
But Washd is just one part of our journey. Outside of laundry, we’ve focused on building broader IT solutions that are practical and adaptable. From setting up high-tech Teams meeting rooms to providing backup solutions that have saved businesses from potential disasters, we’ve always kept one thing in mind: making life easier for our clients. The Evolution of avilo Like many startups, avilo’s journey has been one of growth and learning. When we started in 2019, we were a small team with big ideas. But as demand for our solutions grew, we quickly expanded. One of the pivotal moments for us was growing from two people to a team of twelve, expanding from Norway to North Macedonia. The talented team we found in Macedonia has been crucial to our success, contributing skills and insights.
As we grew, we didn’t just add people, we added solutions. We introduced Washd Control and Washd Sorting, expanding our product line to cover more of the laundry management process. These innovations allowed us to provide even greater value to our clients, helping them streamline their operations and improve efficiency across the board. Milestones and Achievements Our journey has had some memorable milestones. One of the biggest was signing our 10th laundry client, a huge validation of the demand for Washd. We’ve also worked closely with industry leaders like Menova, whose input helped shape many of the features we offer today.
Of course, growth wasn’t without its challenges. When Covid-19 hit, supply chains broke down, and we couldn’t get the products we needed from suppliers. Instead of giving up, we adapted by developing our own hardware in partnership with a manufacturer. This was a turning point that showed our resilience and commitment to delivering for our clients, no matter the obstacles. Lessons Learned We’ve been fortunate to collaborate with some incredible clients. Menova, for example, has shared a wealth of knowledge that we’ve incorporated into Washd, helping us stay ahead of industry needs. Most recently, we completed a project with Ny Vekst og Kompetanse in Nord Odal, where we installed Washd, further proving its versatility in the market.
Beyond laundry, we’ve also taken on IT infrastructure projects. For instance, we provided a comprehensive IT setup for Majas Surdeigsbakeri, ensuring secure network connections for both employees and guests. We also helped a client scale from a small player to a medium-sized business by upgrading their network with cutting-edge UniFi technology. What the Future Holds for avilo Looking ahead, our goal is to continue developing innovative solutions while staying true to our focus on user-friendliness. Within the next two years, we aim to expand our products into more countries and capture an even larger share of the markets we’re currently in. We’ll also keep building on the culture that’s made us successful so far—a close-knit, collaborative team that’s driven by shared goals. AUSTIN, TX, September 18th, 2024/CyberNewsWire/--Research indicates that an infostealer malware infection is often a precursor to a ransomware attack SpyCloud, the leader in Cybercrime Analytics, today announced new cybersecurity research highlighting the growing and alarming threat of infostealers – a type of malware designed to exfiltrate digital identity data, login credentials, and session cookies from infected devices. SpyCloud’s latest findings reveal the staggering scale of identity exposure caused by infostealers, the influence this type of malware has had on the surge in ransomware incidents, and the profound implications for businesses worldwide. Massive Scale of Identity Exposure Creates New Risks According to SpyCloud, 61% of all data breaches in the past year were malware-related, with infostealers responsible for the theft of 343.78 million credentials. These stolen credentials are then sold in criminal communities for use in further attacks. The research also found that one in five individuals has been a victim of an infostealer infection. Each infection, on average, exposes 10-25 third-party business application credentials, creating fertile ground for further access and exploitation, particularly by ransomware operators. “Our latest findings reveal a critical shift in the cybersecurity landscape,” said Damon Fleury, chief product officer at SpyCloud. “Infostealers have become the go-to tool for cybercriminals, with their ability to exfiltrate valuable data in a matter of seconds, creating a runway for cyberattacks like ransomware off the vast amounts of stolen access to SSO, VPN, admin panels, and other critical applications.” Infostealers: The Precursor To Ransomware Attacks The link between infostealers and ransomware is becoming increasingly evident. Through deep analysis of recaptured infostealer logs, SpyCloud discovered a worrying trend: companies with employees and contractors who are infected with infostealer malware are significantly more likely to experience a ransomware attack. In fact, nearly one-third of companies that suffered a ransomware attack last year had previously experienced an infostealer infection. According to the report, this is based on publicly known incidents and confirmed ransomware events. The true exposure is potentially even higher as not all ransomware incidents are made publicly available. “The correlation between infostealer infections and subsequent ransomware attacks is a wake-up call for businesses,” said Trevor Hilligoss, vice president of SpyCloud Labs, SpyCloud. “However, this field is incredibly complex and fast-moving. This year, we’re seeing new infostealers families that make use of expanded capabilities such as advanced encryption to stay stealthy or the ability to restore expired authentication cookies for more persistent access.” The Rise of Malware-as-a-Service And Account Takeover Attacks The infostealer threat is further exacerbated by the rise of Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS). This off-the-shelf model allows even low-skilled cybercriminals to purchase and deploy sophisticated malware, including infostealers, with ease. Through MaaS, these criminals can acquire fresh and accurate identity data in bulk, fueling the cycle of cybercrime. SpyCloud’s findings also shed light on the evolution of account takeover (ATO) attacks, powered by infostealers. Unlike traditional ATO, which relies on stolen credentials (username and password combinations), next-generation ATO leverages stolen session cookies to sidestep traditional authentication methods in what is known as session hijacking. By taking over these already-authenticated sessions, cybercriminals can mimic legitimate users and infiltrate networks undetected. This method significantly increases the success rate of attacks and poses a severe threat to organizational security. “The sheer volume of credentials and session cookies being siphoned by infostealers is staggering,” said Hilligoss. “In the last 90 days alone, SpyCloud has recaptured over 5.4 billion stolen cookie records – with an average of nearly 2,000 exposed records per infected device. This vast trove of data is increasingly used by ransomware operators and initial access brokers to facilitate their attacks, highlighting the need for advanced defense strategies.” Antivirus, MFA And Traditional Defenses Are No Longer Enough At least 54% of devices infected with infostealers in the first half of 2024 had antivirus or endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions installed, underscoring the limitations of traditional cybersecurity measures in combating the techniques used by modern cybercriminals. Furthermore, infostealers and session hijacking attacks render multi-factor authentication (MFA) and passwordless authentication methods like passkeys ineffective. By hijacking already-authenticated sessions, cybercriminals can impersonate legitimate users and side-step even the most robust authentication methods. The call for next-generation cybersecurity The findings from SpyCloud make it clear: traditional malware mitigation is no longer sufficient and ignoring the problem only exacerbates the impact on businesses. Organizations must move beyond merely removing infections and focus on remediating the long-term risks posed by exposed data. This includes resetting compromised application credentials and invalidating session cookies siphoned by infostealers. By understanding the risks posed by infostealers and working to mitigate the data that has been exfiltrated, organizations are able to limit the likelihood of devastating cyberattacks such as ransomware that stem from this stolen data. SpyCloud’s latest findings reveal the staggering scale of identity exposure caused by infostealers, the influence this type of malware has had on the surge in ransomware incidents, and the profound implications for businesses worldwide. Massive Scale of Identity Exposure Creates New Risks According to SpyCloud, 61% of all data breaches in the past year were malware-related, with infostealers responsible for the theft of 343.78 million credentials. These stolen credentials are then sold in criminal communities for use in further attacks. The research also found that one in five individuals has been a victim of an infostealer infection. Through deep analysis of recaptured infostealer logs, SpyCloud discovered a worrying trend: companies with employees and contractors who are infected with infostealer malware are significantly more likely to experience a ransomware attack. In fact, nearly one-third of companies that suffered a ransomware attack last year had previously experienced an infostealer infection. According to the report, this is based on publicly known incidents and confirmed ransomware events. This off-the-shelf model allows even low-skilled cybercriminals to purchase and deploy sophisticated malware, including infostealers, with ease. Through MaaS, these criminals can acquire fresh and accurate identity data in bulk, fueling the cycle of cybercrime. SpyCloud’s findings also shed light on the evolution of account takeover (ATO) attacks, powered by infostealers. Unlike traditional ATO, which relies on stolen credentials (username and password combinations), next-generation ATO leverages stolen session cookies to sidestep traditional authentication methods in what is known as session hijacking. By taking over these already-authenticated sessions, cybercriminals can mimic legitimate users and infiltrate networks undetected.
