How I built an Enigma Simulator…

A few years ago, they were merely being used to make phone calls or send a text, and look at us now; they have transformed to ‘smartphones’ that seem to be attached to our hands. Every spare moment is being utilized to catch up on taking snapshots, reading news items, interacting on social media, checking our email or playing a game. Similar to the mobile phone industry, look at the internet, the monetary system, artificial intelligence and the evolution they went through.

<a href="https://hackernoon.com/" target="_blank">In a recent article this week</a>, I discussed <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/1804.05141.pdf" target="_blank">Oasis Labs’ Ekiden protocol</a> as one of the technologies focused on enabling privacy-first blockchain technologies. Based on some of the feedback, I realize that many people have the wrong assumptions about the challenges and opportunities of privacy protocols in the blockchain ecosystem. In that context, today I would like to quickly explore some of the most recent technologies and ideas that are trying to enable privacy preserving computations as a first-class citizen of blockchain technologies.

Blockchains might be the most ground-breaking technologies in several generations but its mainstream adoption remains relatively limited compared to other technology trends. The blockchain community is very aware that there are several challenges that need to be solved in order to streamline the adoption of blockchain technologies. Among those challenges, none two are more important than privacy and scalability.

In my opinion, the most complex rules in the C++ <a href="https://hackernoon.com/tagged/language" target="_blank">language</a> have to do with the ordering of <a href="https://hackernoon.com/tagged/function" target="_blank">function</a> templates and class template specializations. They are dense, difficult to follow, underspecified, involve jumping from section to section in the standard, and, on top of all of that, the major compilers don’t even agree with the standard anyway. Let’s explore what I mean.

The first thing that came to my mind when I first heard about Functional Reactive Programming (FRP) and RxJava was why?! Why switch from my comfortable Imperative programming and AsyncTask world? The answer was not clear at that time but after recent experiences I felt the need for it. In this part I will try to convince you, honestly myself as well a little bit, to learn RxJava and then we will discuss what it is we are trying to achieve using RxJava (Psst… Hint, it is a paradigm).
