TL;DR: I am bullish on Cardano, do not take my words as financial advice. Since its inception, Cardano has been one of the most influential blockchains, designed with a strong scientific approach. Seasonal investors, engineers, and business people make up the core team, which ensures the project's progress and commercial implications. It has shown its ability to draw and sustain a vibrant global community. Cardano is a part of history Like many other projects in the early days, Cardano was funded through a US $62.2 million initial coin offering. The currency debuted with a market cap of $600 million. By the time writing this article, the total market capitalization of ADA is $44 billion. The team behind Cardano is led by Charles Hoskinson, a former co-founder of BitShares and Ethereum. The game plan appears to be a general-purpose blockchain enabling advanced smart contracts, decentralized apps, sidechains, multipart calculations, and metadata. Consider how the landline cable, for example, provides the infrastructure for us to have access to the internet, to surf the web, call each other, and use apps to transfer money around the world. Cardano could be able to enable similar services in the future, and that is on the blockchain. That may sound very similar to other blockchain projects, especially Ethereum, but Cardano also has its unique approach. Since the beginning, the blockchain is set to build with “peer-reviewed research and developed through evidence-based methods” that is using traditional academic methods to create the highest level of certainty in its technicality. Taking Ethereum as an example, we can currently see how difficult it is now to increase scalability, e.g. via sharding, or to change the consensus mechanism from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake. The peer review is not limited to the Cardano developers or the community, you are looking for exchange and feedback at conferences and from universities. PEER-REVIEW This is of course much more time consuming than reviews which only take place within the developer community. SCALABILITY: A very important point, which Cardano identified as a deficit, especially with Bitcoin and Ethereum, is the lack of scalability. 1. Transactions per second (Tx/s.) 2. Network bandwidth (required for the amount of transactions required) 3. Amount of data (which data must I exchange or store in the block chain) Scalability is divided into 3 areas: Bitcoin, with its approx. 14 Tx/s, would of course not be able to serve as a global payment network. The main limitation here is the proof-of-work consensus. Cardano therefore relies on its own proof-of-stake based consensus, called . TRANSACTIONS Oroboros divides the time in which the consensus is created into epochs, and chooses according to a random number the slot leader, which performs the function similar to a Miner, but without the same effort (HW& energy). Accordingly, no time is lost to find a slotleader and blocks can be created in very fast sequence. Oroboros Slot leaders can also perform functions for sidechains. Network bandwidth is also a key factor in terms of scalability. The aim is to reduce the bandwidth required for data dissemination and communication. For this purpose RINA (Recursive InterNetwork Architecture) is to be developed. RINA is a counter draft to TCP/IP. TCP/IP is a protocol stack with a layered structure based on the OSI model, where each layer fulfils a different task. Meanwhile, however, there is a multitude of protocols for each layer. RINA, on the other hand, is not based on such a layer model, but on a recursive structure for the network protocol architecture. This comprises only a few protocols, but they cover everything that services need today. NETWORK BANDWIDTH With the increasing amount of data exchanged, the size of the data to be stored grows. The goal is to reduce this amount of data. Not every participant needs all data from other transactions. When Hans and Maria exchange/transfer ADA tokens, the other users are actually only interested in the fact that the token ownership is then correctly recorded. Also in terms of privacy, a reduction of data that other participants receive about a transaction in which they are not involved is advantageous. DATA Techniques for reducing the amount of data: Pruning (truncation, simplification of data sets) Subscriptions (Subscribing to information) Compression (use of compression methods) Partitioning (dividing the network into shards) Reducing this amount of data is certainly one of the biggest challenges in the area of scaling! Additional complexity results from the development of own cryptographic procedures. Even though Charles Hoskins has a lot of experience in the field of cryptography, self-developed cryptographic procedures always bear a considerable risk and significantly increase the development and testing effort. Wherever he could, Satoshi has used well-known procedures, also in the area of cryptography. It is very likely that not only a block chain or a crypto-currency will prevail. Therefore it will be necessary to enable an exchange between the different networks, which can do without central points like Exchanges. INTEROPERABILITY: Cardano wants to establish interoperability not only between block chains such as BTC, ETH and XRP, but also to legacy systems of the banking world (SWIFT etc.)! But this is very ambitious and highly complex. Consider the regulatory requirements, for example, if money from Ethereum’s ICOs is to be deposited via SWIFT into an account with JP Morgan. In the last update that Charles Hoskinson gave to the community, he could not give a more exact time frame for the release of Shelley (Decentralization). He wants to name a period of two months in the next weeks in which Shelley will be available. As the roadmap overview shows, the Cardano project is already one year behind schedule in terms of the basic function (Byron). The first version of Shelley, which will bring decentralization, is currently expected for Q3 2020. The other versions (Goguen, Basho, Voltaire) are certainly not to be expected in 2020. As mentioned before, especially with the Basho and Voltaire versions come those features that are considered the biggest challenges. Therefore an implementation of Voltaire in a mature version is not expected before 2022. The current revised roadmap is as follows: An ICO, which was concluded on January 1, 2017, has brought Cardano a total of 62.2 million USD through the sale of 57.6% of the tokens. More detailed information can be found in the ADA Distribution Audit. Information on the use of the collected funds is not included in the audit. The current market capitalisation is USD 1.05 billion and the token price is USD 0.04. This is certainly based on the expectation of a successful course of the project, even if probably few ADA token owners expect the planned milestones for the outstanding versions to be met. In particular, the increased scalability of Bitcoin through L2 technologies such as the Lighting network or PoS and Sharding for Ethereum have changed a lot compared to 2017. Bitcoin and Ethereum can already rely on a functioning network, a very active community and corresponding network effects. As we know from other examples (e.g. Facebook, Twitter etc.), network effects are often more important than some features and can hardly be caught up on. Since Cardano with Byron, the first of five versions, has so far only released basic functions and thus has not solved any of the major self- imposed challenges, the gap to the dominant crypto currencies is currently probably growing rather than shrinking. For example, at any given time, there are over US$43 trillion of invoices in balance sheets waiting to be paid across the globe. US$10 trillion globall y up to 90% “U of world trade is dependent on trade finance invoicing….but around 70% of all SMEs in emerging markets lack access to credit.” p to 90% Despite this, according to a recent World Bank Group Study, around 70% of all SMEs located in emerging markets lack access to adequate credit. Of these, 50% have at some point had trade finance requests rejected by traditional banking establishments. This isn’t because of bad credit however, and the invoices these companies are generating are financially sound. Rather, it’s because the required infrastructure doesn’t exist to provide such a large number of SMEs with invoice credit. As a result, a US$1.5 trillion credit gap has emerged, predominately from Asian countries, whose economies are growing at an unprecedented rate. According to the World Economic Forum, if the issue of trade financing is left to continue unabated, the trade finance gap will rise to more than $2.4 trillion by 2025. The Traxia foundation, and it’s first working solution LiqEase, are seeking to digitize working capital assets for SMEs via the Cardano blockchain, and facilitate US$1.1 trillion of invoice asset trading globally. If you’ve been following the FinTech space for any significant length of time, you’ve probably heard just about every purported use case under the sun for blockchain. Current trade finance processes are expensive, laden with bureaucracy and require a significant investment in time. Add to this mix lengthy cross border payments and settlements, and it’s clear that an efficient solution is needed. Major institutions are taking note of blockchain’s potential for trade finance. Big-Four consultancy firm, Deloitte, remarked that trade finance could be significantly improved by: “…leveraging a Blockchain based infrastructure to drive efficiencies, reduce cost base and open up new revenue opportunities, like newer models of credit and funding guarantees backing the trade.” Likewise, Deloitte sees opportunity for throughout the ongoing blockchain revolution. digitization of trade finance They’re not alone either. During 2018, the World Trade Organization published a on the potential of blockchain to revolutionize international trade, concluding that: 160 page report “If we succeed in creating an ecosystem conducive to the wider development of Blockchain, international trade could well look radically different in 10 to 15 years.” It seems then, that the usefulness of blockchain for trade finance isn’t of any doubt. The real question is, who will build the first exchange for trade finance digital assets? While the previous article described why Cardano Foundation’s chairman became discredited and what the community initiative was about, this article summarizes the subsequent developments that were followed by the chairman’s resignation on November 13th. What’s going on with Cardano? What happened before? To get a full grasp of the situation, it is best to just read (14 min read). For the sake of completeness we’ll do a short recap. the previous article Cardano aims to have an on-chain liquid democracy in the future. Until that point is reached (2020?), Cardano is federated by three entities. Growing the community and driving adoption are two of the Cardano Foundation’s main responsibilities. Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK) and Emurgo take care of the technical development and business adoption of the Cardano ecosystem. Mid-September, IOHK CEO Charles Hoskinson about policy and funding choices made by the Foundation. On a private lounge on the Cardano forum, community members [only visible for accounts] expressing these and many additional concerns regarding the functioning of Foundation’s chairman, Michael Parsons. Aside from a potentially increased effectiveness from the Foundation itself, the recent turn of events has really brought together the Cardano community, that demonstrated being vigilant, resilient and outspoken when needed. Ironically, these were actually community characteristics the Cardano Foundation was supposed to facilitate in the preparation of Cardano’s future on-chain liquid democracy and decentralized governance process.
