It’s now been over 50 years since the US dollar stopped being tied to the gold standard. But what, then, defines its value? Investopedia nicely: Currency “holds value simply because people have faith that other parties will accept it.” defines it In the world of cryptocurrency, this has clear repercussions. For crypto tokens to be truly useful, they must generate a supply and demand – making different parties want to accept it. Today’s crypto holders are waking up to this reality, seeing that options to use cryptocurrencies to make purchases remain relatively slim. Yet, research confirms that there’s a rather surprising frontrunner when it comes to the world’s most crypto-friendly sectors: . travel The industry players would lose a big opportunity by not jumping on the crypto bandwagon. After all, in the middle of 2021, there were already over worldwide, and the number keeps growing exponentially. It’s predicted that there could be a crypto users by the end of this year – a testament to the appeal of structures centered around security, transparency, and decentralization. 300 million crypto holders billion In travel, all these aspects come together to offer a more seamless experience. Obviously, the appetite for more use cases goes well beyond accepting Bitcoin: From implementing alt tokens to introducing additional blockchain solutions such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), there’s a whole new world to explore. For example, GetYourGuide, a Berlin-based tour and activity booking site , processed via BitPay, last June. While the move was meant to attract new audiences as part of the company’s expansion to the US market, it worked wonders to capture the attention of Dogecoin holders across the globe. started accepting Dogecoin “People want to put their crypto back into the system [and] travel is one of the biggest categories out there,” said the company’s CEO back then. “We take Dogecoin now into the real world; you can apply and actually get a real-world, kinetic experience.” But what really needs to happen for crypto and travel's marriage to be a happy one? Let’s take a look. Blockchain disruption brings endless possibilities Encrypted, shared, and distributed databases with unchangeable information… But how does this fit into travel? Well, imagine you’re going on a trip. You need to book your flights, your hotel, maybe a car, and the activities. But you might get scammed by a local tour provider, and also find yourself needing to extend the hotel stay by an extra day. Throughout that ordeal, you have to interact with numerous providers across platforms, all having different policies in place. And on the operator’s side, it doesn’t get any easier. With poor visibility of the inventory and unstandardized data, companies often fall into the vicious cycle of overbooking, cancellations, and subsequent expensive refunds. With blockchain, however, each confirmed booking can be added as a transaction block, meaning that all participants in the travel ecosystem can have a unified, accurate overview of everything that’s going on at any given time. The opportunity Travel is a traditionally fragmented industry, and savvy entrepreneurs are entering the space to disrupt tourism through blockchain. The technology allows them to make the entire experience – and virtually every single touchpoint of travel – more flexible, more enjoyable, and faster. We all know that travel hasn’t been the fastest to adopt tech. Even the biggest providers that were born out of innovative solutions are now married to their product and rarely branch out. But despite their conservative approach, they will not want to miss out on . This tendency will likely push them to partner with agile innovators rather than trying to do the heavy tech lifting by themselves. the new opportunities This is music to the ears of emerging blockchain startups in the space, who can introduce middleman-independent solutions into the travel process and strike partnerships with major players to gain trust and credibility. A great example is Dtravel, a decentralized home-sharing network (and an Airbnb competitor), which leverages smart contracts between hosts and guests. The most interesting part is that it’s built as a DAO – meaning it’s entirely driven by its community, rather than a corporate board. All registered hosts and any guest can purchase TRVL (the platform’s native token) to become voting members. At the end of 2021, the platform had within its network. over 250,000 homes The challenge New crypto startups in travel could have an exciting path ahead – but there’s a catch. In reality, many of them fail, running out of funds even before taking off. The excitement hardly compensates for poor business planning: Founders often overpromise and agree to the demands of their investors – who tend to be particularly hungry in the blockchain space. Crypto is fast-moving and enticing; if you’re getting involved, don’t lose your head. Moreover, many projects make the mistake of throwing way too much money at marketing to cultivate audience awareness rather than building a good product. In travel, many startups go for glamorous gamified solutions, but they often end up having a lot to say, without having a real product to back that up. The result? They will fail because they won’t bring in enough revenue. The right way to do it instead is by pinpointing the needs of travelers, investing in development, and working towards getting the product-market fit right. Then, when you spend on marketing, it’s to generate revenue to be more profitable and sustainable, not to inflate the bubble of false growth. When I was launching my crypto rewards travel platform, I saw that finding the balance with investors could be . Many times, they will try to push their opinion – but it’s likely they’re just looking to fill their pockets and don’t have any substantial interest in the project. This is one of the main barriers stopping most companies from adopting crypto as a payment method. To drive mass adoption, players in the space need more price stability; companies that already accept crypto likely have a team that is able to plan and hedge the risk. As more crypto derivatives and tools are introduced to the market for hedging, we will see stronger tides for crypto payments. In the case of travelers, many already hold crypto as a form of investment, meaning that they have normalized the fluctuating value of their portfolios. However, not all crypto is suitable for payment. Make sure to educate yourself about the type of tokens out there before accepting them indiscriminately. This is what to watch out for: Low liquidity can make coins hard to sell, or the price can fluctuate so much it can be risky to put them on the books. Special functionalities that are baked into some tokens could be a hidden trap. For example, some tokens allow their founding team to stop and halt trading or transfers, potentially leaving you with useless currency. Undoxxed founders can make you susceptible to running into scams and rugpulls, as the team could take your funds and never be seen again – with no accountability whatsoever. Doxxed founders are always a better choice. On top of that, before accepting crypto, follow these three rules: 1. These dynamics work wonders for brand loyalty: Choice Hotels, for example, allows people to exchange crypto for its loyalty points – making travelers invest in their business while offering diverse benefits in exchange. Just think about it… If you can like unique access to boutique hotels, exclusive community meetups, or access to the best local guides and experts – not to mention community voting rights – doesn’t it change the game? get experiences The challenge While this goes for accepting crypto too, implementing more sophisticated blockchain-based structures will mean handling complex processes. Travel companies may be intrigued by innovations such as NFT bookings, but without a functional tech infrastructure in place, the implementation could only exacerbate existing problems. Be it legal and regulatory standards, tech challenges, or asset and security risks, each individual area will require a certain level of expertise that can be hard to pick up as an individual. If travel companies want to get blockchain right, they might need to leverage a network of experts along the way. Don't underestimate the power of correct and safe implementation. For example, a hacking incident – if not detected on time – can have possible implications for future transactions. Unfortunately, it takes organizations , on average, to respond to a cyberattack. The loss of a blockchain key (and all the customer’s loyalty points with it) will not only wipe out an entire account but can also pose a threat to all the data and transactions that had preceded the hacking. This enriched model allows us to obtain a good overall fitting of the dispersion curves while introducing the new possibility of describing modes with negative group velocity that are known to trigger negative refraction effects. The inertia-augmented model also allows for more freedom on the values of the asymptotes corresponding to the cut-offs. In the previous version of the relaxed micromorphic model, the asymptote of one curve (pressure or shear) is always bounded by the cut-off of the following curve of the same type. This constraint does not hold anymore in the enhanced version of the model. While the obtained curves’ fitting is of good quality overall, a perfect quantitative agreement must still be reached for very small wavelengths that are close to the size of the unit cell. 1 Introduction Metamaterials are materials whose mechanical properties go beyond those of classical materials thanks to their heterogeneous microstructure. They can show unusual static/dynamic responses such as negative Poisson’s ratio [27], twist or bend in response to being pushed or pulled [18, 36], band-gaps [28, 46, 8, 13], cloaking [11, 31], focusing [20, 16], channeling [24, 45], negative refraction [52, 25, 47], etc. The working frequency of each metamaterial strongly depends on the characteristic size and the geometry of the underlying unit cell, as well as on the choice of the base material. In this paper, we present a labyrinthine metamaterial that, thanks to the use of a polymeric based material and an optimized distribution of mass inside the unit cell (see Figure 1), gives rise to a wide acoustic band-gap with characteristic unit cell’s size of the order of centimeters. The direct finite element modeling of structures build up with this labyrinthine metamaterial is unfeasible due to the extremely tight meshing that would be needed to correctly cover the narrow strips of material inside each unit cell. It is thus apparent the need for a homogenized model to use this type of very promising metamaterials in actual engineering designs. Various homogenization techniques have been developed with the purpose of providing rigorous predictions of the macroscopic metamaterial’s mechanical response when the properties of the base materials and their spatial distribution are known. These homogenization approaches have been shown to be useful in describing the overall behavior of metamaterials in the static and quasi-static regimes [6, 40, 3, 30, 21, 48, 35, 9, 12, 44, 29, 19, 22] as well as, more recently, in the dynamic regime [5, 14, 10, 15, 4, 23, 49, 50, 51, 42, 41, 43]. However, these models are often unsuited to deal with finitesize metamaterials, because they are based on upscaling techniques valid for unbounded media. Because of that, finite-size metamaterials’ structures are mostly investigated via Finite Element simulations which are performed using directly the microstructured material, e.g. [26]. The downside of this approach is that the computational cost quickly becomes unsustainable (especially for unit cells as the one presented in this paper), although the propagation patterns obtained are very accurate. This heavily limits the possibility of exploring large-scale or very convoluted geometric meta-structures. To overcome this problem and open up the possibility of designing complex meta-structures using the metamaterial presented in this paper as a basic building block, we propose to use an inertia-augmented relaxed micromorphic model. This model is based on the relaxed micromorphic model that we previously established [34, 32, 17, 1, 2] and has been augmented with a new inertia term accounting for coupled space-time derivatives of the micro-distortion tensor. The relaxed micromorphic model has extensively proven its efficacy in describing the broadband behavior of many infinite and finite-size metamaterials [1, 2, 37, 38, 39] and is extended in this paper so as to be able to account for negative group velocity which was not the case before. We will show that the proposed model is able to describe well the labyrinthine metamaterial’s response for a large range of frequencies (going beyond the first band-gap) and wave numbers (approaching the size of the unit cell) and for all directions of propagation with a limited number of frequency- and scale-independent constitutive parameters. The new inertia-augmented term will be shown to trigger modes with negative group velocities that are known to be associated with negative refraction phenomena. The results presented in this paper will allow us to shortly present new designs of finite-size labyrinthine metamaterials’ structures that can control elastic energy in the acoustic regime for eventual subsequent re-use. 1.1 A Polyethylene-based metamaterial for acoustic control In this section, we present a new unit cell’s design that gives rise to a metamaterial for acoustic control. This unit cell is designed to achieve a band-gap at relatively low frequencies (600−2000 Hz) so that application for acoustic control can be targeted. The unit cell considered is made out of polyethylene, cf. Table 1. Compared to Aluminium or Titanium, that we used for the metamaterials studied in [37, 38, 39], Polyethylene gives rise to lower wave speeds, thus allowing band-gap phenomena to appear at lower frequencies. A further lowering of the band-gap is obtained through the adoption of a labyrinth-type geometry, cf. Figure 1. This structure presents a tetragonal symmetry and thus features a reduced number of parameters with respect to a fully anisotropic system. The circular center of the unit cell is connected by thin bars allowing the heavier center to move easily, thus giving rise to local resonance phenomena of relatively low frequencies while additionally providing a very soft macro-material behaviour. It may sound ominous and it may have its downsides, but the travel rule (in crypto and beyond) isn’t that limiting —at least not for average users. As most rules in the financial world, it applies to businesses, and not directly to customers. This regulation now includes cryptocurrencies, but it has existed long before Bitcoin. Likely, you didn’t even know that it was there in the first place. The travel rule was introduced by the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) in 1996 and later adopted by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an international regulatory entity, as a global anti-money laundering (AML) standard. This rule, also known as Recommendation 16 by the FATF, mandates that financial institutions, such as banks, must collect and share specific information when processing transfers above a certain threshold (typically $1,000 in the U.S.). In 2019, the FATF extended the Travel Rule to cover cryptocurrencies, requiring Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), like exchanges and custodial wallet providers, to follow similar guidelines as traditional financial institutions. This expansion aimed to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing in the growing crypto sector. The term "Travel Rule" comes from the fact that the required customer information must "travel" with the transaction as it moves from one financial institution to another. When a financial institution processes a transfer—whether it's fiat or crypto—it must ensure that key details, such as the sender’s and receiver’s names, account numbers, and crypto addresses, "travel" along with the funds to the receiving institution. This enables authorities to track and investigate suspicious activities across different institutions and jurisdictions. Who is affected by the travel rule? As mentioned above, this rule primarily targets Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) —which means crypto businesses. These include crypto exchanges, custodial wallet providers, and firms handling token offerings. Businesses that facilitate asset exchange, transfer, or safekeeping must comply by collecting and sharing sender and recipient details in fiat or crypto transactions. The rule applies to transactions between VASPs or between a VASP and a financial institution. This way, though, customers using those regulated platforms are also impacted. They must provide personal details for verification and record-keeping, including their full name, address, and account details, ensuring compliance with anti-money laundering measures. Transaction information such as the sender and recipient's identification, transaction amount, and purpose must also be shared between VASPs. While this enhances transparency, it raises concerns about user privacy, adequate treatment of sensible data, and transaction delays. Regions such as the EU, starting December 30, 2024, the U.S., Canada, and Singapore have adopted the Travel Rule for crypto transactions. Although it promotes market legitimacy, compliance can be costly and time-consuming, particularly for smaller businesses. Meeting regulatory requirements often requires significant investment in technology and personnel, potentially hindering growth and innovation within the crypto industry. Decentralized wallets and the travel rule As an individual user, you can always choose. The travel rule doesn’t affect non-custodial wallets or peer-to-peer (P2P) operations, only kicking in when you use businesses to store your funds or complete your transactions —e.g., a crypto exchange website. Decentralized services, on the other hand, don't rely on centralized intermediaries, which are typically the target of regulations. If users exchange cryptocurrency directly between their non-custodial wallets or use Decentralized Exchanges (DEXs), they won’t be affected by the travel rule. Since DEXs operate without intermediaries and allow direct P2P trading, they generally don’t require verification, which is a key component of the travel rule. This enables users to maintain greater privacy and anonymity while trading. However, some jurisdictions may still impose certain regulations on DEXs, requiring them to implement specific measures, but as of now, the travel rule mainly impacts centralized exchanges and services that involve intermediaries.
