Here's a new problem, and a new set of jobs for humans, that will be caused as more and more Robotaxis show up (think of an Uber that works without a human in the car). What is the problem? Transportation behavior will change as we get more and more vehicles on the road with no humans inside. Something that's already happening in San Francisco, where you see many autonomous vehicles driving around with no humans inside from companies like Waymo, Zoox, and others. Expected are many others, including Tesla, and GM's Cruise which we hear will be back on the road later this year. The problem? Football stadiums, concerts, basketball stadiums, conferences, events like the Olympics, all will see radically different usage patterns. For instance, today, if you attend a football game, you park in one of dozens of parking lots around the stadium and you walk in, or take a shuttle to one of the entrances. This adds some "randomness" to the flow of crowds in and out and lets city officials who plan out traffic flows bring traffic to those parking lots with a few different routes. Even today it's often a mess with traffic taking an hour to get into many venues with large numbers of people but officials, and others, who work in these industries tell me autonomous vehicles will make traffic far worse. Why? Well, let's assume in five years you are in a Cybertruck taking your family to a football game and that by then the Cybertruck can drive with no humans in the car. Will you want your Cybertruck to take you to a far off parking lot and make you walk to the stadium? No. You'll want it to drop you off near the football stadium. And here's the rub: so will everyone else. Which means you'll have thousands of Waymos, Cruises, Teslas, all trying to get to the same drop-off point. This new human expectation will lead to traffic nightmares. Worse, I've been talking with executives at these kinds of venues and they say the coordination between sports teams, city officials/police, and ride-sharing companies is nearly non-existent.One told me they tried to get Uber and Lyft to come meet with them to design new traffic flows for their vehicles and they just don't get very little help or interest from the ride-sharing companies. One, who works with the 49ers, tells me city officials often put up signs for Uber/Lyft drivers that lead them into dead-end roads where they need to waste time turning around and figuring out where they need to go. Signage, cones, road closures, all could be done in a much better way around venues. And that's before you consider the humans. Often crowds of humans getting out of venues are drunk, don't follow traffic rules, and, sometimes, even turn riotous. Has the autonomous vehicle industry worked with venues to understand how traffic systems change around event venues? No, is the answer I keep hearing, and getting Waymo or Tesla interested in studying the problem together and designing new traffic facilities around big-crowd venues is difficult. Oh, it can happen. At Coachella, for instance, Uber built a huge parking lot with waiting areas for humans that were covered (it's hot often waiting for your ride to show up). Uber also built contextual systems to work with drivers around the Western United States to convince drivers to come to Palm Springs for a month and drive people around (Coachella is two weekends, where 150,000 people visit each weekend, followed by a country music festival that has slightly smaller crowds, but Uber, alone, brings thousands of cars to handle the crowds of people who want to use it to get to and from the venue). Along with the parking lot city officials block off lanes and have clear signs for Uber/Lyft/Taxis to use and have police at every intersection directing traffic and making sure things flow smoothly. Even with all that work it often takes one to three hours of standing in line to get a Taxi or an Uber out of the venue. Now imagine if thousands of people were arriving in autonomous vehicles. If the vehicles weren't programmed into where to go, and if Tesla doesn't have its own drop off and pickup lot things could get nasty, and fast. Last week at NVIDIA's big event my Tesla was programmed to pick up a friend at the Marriott. Problem was it took me down a route that is usually just fine, but during that event NVIDIA and city officials had the street in front of the conference center closed due to the large crowds that were attending that event. My Tesla didn't know about the closed street so it tried to take me down that closed street, figured it out too late, and then got stuck in traffic going on a detour around, wasting 15 minutes. Now 15 minutes doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is if I was driving an Uber passenger. Why? Well, first of all now I have a passenger who isn't happy with the navigation choices the car made, maybe giving me a lower score than I otherwise would get, but, worse, if I was picking up a passenger that person might see that I'm now 15 minutes away instead of two and decide to hop in a cab or cancel my ride. Wasted time, which means if I'm driving an Uber I don't get paid. There also is a difference between permanent venues, like a football stadium, which have the same problems every weekend (while football isn't being played these stadiums are often used for other things, like concerts) and music festivals that only happen one or two weekends a year, like Coachella. There aren't enough vehicles to support these temporary crowds so vehicles have to be moved into that area. There are dozens of such festivals all over the world, and that's counting just the ones with 50,000 attendees or more, like EDC in Vegas, Glastonbury in UK, etc. So, a company, like a Tesla, which is expected to have humanless vehicles driving in most Western Countries, would need to work with dozens of venues to setup drop off and pick up zones, and with local police to understand how to work with them so that they understand how to work with autonomous vehicles. Once in a while one of those will get stuck, for instance, maybe with a blown tire or an equipment malfunction, or, worse, an accident. At SXSW a drunk driver plowed through crowds of people one year, killing many, and causing a major first-responder response. In such a situation all the constituencies would need to work together to change traffic flows to make sure more vehicles aren't drawn to the area, or interfere with first responders. Is there a relationship lead between all these constituencies? I hear there is not, except in the best of cases. So, this leads to a new job for humans. AI's can't attend city council or meetings with police. AI's can't often figure out why all traffic has stopped. Once, at Half Moon Bay's pumpkin festival it started to rain. Everyone headed for their cars at the same time, but both Waze and Apple Maps continued to give incorrect data for an hour, both on recommendations for what street to head down, and on time it will take to get out of the area. These systems are built for normal traffic flows, and often can't understand that police have even reversed traffic, so that cars are going down the wrong way on a road. Which leads to the AI. Uber's founder, Travis Kalanick, told me his goal is to have one car near someone who is calling for a ride. That way the ride will arrive in less than five minutes and everyone is happy. Uber built a complex "traffic control system" that hooks drivers and passengers up together. That system usually works great, but when high-crowd events show up these systems often mislead drivers and passengers alike. Waymo is, so far, punting, and refuses to go near these events, and has a very small number of passengers today. Even if you live in San Francisco you can't just get a Waymo, you have to wait to be added to the system and they are adding new passengers slowly so that the whole system remains healthy and doesn't hit these large-crowd issues yet. That will change as they scale up the system to be in many more cities over the next few years and open up the system to everyone, not just a limited number of beta testers. So, to wrap it up, soon entrepreneurs, like Elon Musk, who is making plans for bringing its millions of vehicles online to do human-less driving, will need to do new AI modeling work for how cars should behave around high-crowd events, leading to new traffic-control systems to bring thousands of cars in and out of these venues, and will need teams of humans working with venues and cities to build new drop-off-areas for autonomous vehicles to drop off and pick up people. That is a human job, not one that an AI or robot can do. And a company that has aspirations for building a global network of autonomous vehicles, will need many such workers to work with local customs/officials/venues/teams/events. I see very little modeling work, although I saw MIT Media Lab doing some early work to understand how cities would change due to autonomous vehicles, and I don't see anyone in the AI/Autonomous Vehicle industry talking about research/work in this areas. (And yes, I do have a list of those people here on X: https://x.com/scobleizer/lists) I'm doing this post to try to spur industry interest in working on these issues and to connect people who may already be working on them. Even with all that work it often takes one to three hours of standing in line to get a Taxi or an Uber out of the venue. Now imagine if thousands of people were arriving in autonomous vehicles. If the vehicles weren't programmed into where to go, and if Tesla doesn't have its own drop off and pickup lot things could get nasty, and fast. Last week at NVIDIA's big event my Tesla was programmed to pick up a friend at the Marriott. Problem was it took me down a route that is usually just fine, but during that event NVIDIA and city officials had the street in front of the conference center closed due to the large crowds that were attending that event. My Tesla didn't know about the closed street so it tried to take me down that closed street, figured it out too late, and then got stuck in traffic going on a detour around, wasting 15 minutes. Now 15 minutes doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is if I was driving an Uber passenger. Why? Well, first of all now I have a passenger who isn't happy with the navigation choices the car made, maybe giving me a lower score than I otherwise would get, but, worse, if I was picking up a passenger that person might see that I'm now 15 minutes away instead of two and decide to hop in a cab or cancel my ride. Wasted time, which means if I'm driving an Uber I don't get paid. There also is a difference between permanent venues, like a football stadium, which have the same problems every weekend (while football isn't being played these stadiums are often used for other things, like concerts) and music festivals that only happen one or two weekends a year, like Coachella. There aren't enough vehicles to support these temporary crowds so vehicles have to be moved into that area. There are dozens of such festivals all over the world, and that's counting just the ones with 50,000 attendees or more, like EDC in Vegas, Glastonbury in UK, etc. So, a company, like a Tesla, which is expected to have humanless vehicles driving in most Western Countries, would need to work with dozens of venues to setup drop off and pick up zones, and with local police to understand how to work with them so that they understand how to work with autonomous vehicles. Once in a while one of those will get stuck, for instance, maybe with a blown tire or an equipment malfunction, or, worse, an accident. At SXSW a drunk driver plowed through crowds of people one year, killing many, and causing a major first-responder response. In such a situation all the constituencies would need to work together to change traffic flows to make sure more vehicles aren't drawn to the area, or interfere with first responders. Is there a relationship lead between all these constituencies? I hear there is not, except in the best of cases. So, this leads to a new job for humans. AI's can't attend city council or meetings with police. AI's can't often figure out why all traffic has stopped. Once, at Half Moon Bay's pumpkin festival it started to rain. Everyone headed for their cars at the same time, but both Waze and Apple Maps continued to give incorrect data for an hour, both on recommendations for what street to head down, and on time it will take to get out of the area. These systems are built for normal traffic flows, and often can't understand that police have even reversed traffic, so that cars are going down the wrong way on a road. Which leads to the AI. Uber's founder, Travis Kalanick, told me his goal is to have one car near someone who is calling for a ride. That way the ride will arrive in less than five minutes and everyone is happy. Uber built a complex "traffic control system" that hooks drivers and passengers up together. That system usually works great, but when high-crowd events show up these systems often mislead drivers and passengers alike. Waymo is, so far, punting, and refuses to go near these events, and has a very small number of passengers today. Even if you live in San Francisco you can't just get a Waymo, you have to wait to be added to the system and they are adding new passengers slowly so that the whole system remains healthy and doesn't hit these large-crowd issues yet. That will change as they scale up the system to be in many more cities over the next few years and open up the system to everyone, not just a limited number of beta testers. So, to wrap it up, soon entrepreneurs, like Elon Musk, who is making plans for bringing its millions of vehicles online to do human-less driving, will need to do new AI modeling work for how cars should behave around high-crowd events, leading to new traffic-control systems to bring thousands of cars in and out of these venues, and will need teams of humans working with venues and cities to build new drop-off-areas for autonomous vehicles to drop off and pick up people. That is a human job, not one that an AI or robot can do. And a company that has aspirations for building a global network of autonomous vehicles, will need many such workers to work with local customs/officials/venues/teams/events. I see very little modeling work, although I saw MIT Media Lab doing some early work to understand how cities would change due to autonomous vehicles, and I don't see anyone in the AI/Autonomous Vehicle industry talking about research/work in this areas. (And yes, I do have a list of those people here on X: https://x.com/scobleizer/lists ) https://x.com/scobleizer/lists I'm doing this post to try to spur industry interest in working on these issues and to connect people who may already be working on them. I got taken to a Taylor Swift concert by an entrepreneur who built technology systems for the local stadium, so I know it's possible. :-) Technology solves old problems and causes new problems. Which is why I'm still on team human. AI's aren't good at figuring this stuff out and I don't see them getting good at figuring them out, either, for years. Sounds like a good job to have for a while.

Adobe vs the U.S. If you’ve ever used Adobe, you know that their products are good but their subscription method is god awful. It’s too expensive, especially for freelance beginners and hobbyists. $60 a month is just too much for people who are either doing it for fun or don’t have enough experience to get paying gigs. If you want to make the argument that Adobe is for professionals and you should only start using it when you’re years into your freelance career, then okay; I’ll concede that point. However, my other problem with Adobe’s subscription is far more serious: It’s extremely predatory. And I’m not the only one who thinks so; Uncle Sam does too. Adobe recently got sued by the U.S. government for harming consumers with their subscription model and their cancellation method. Here’s an excerpt from the complaint filed against the company: “For years, Adobe has harmed consumers by enrolling them in its default, most lucrative subscription plan without clearly disclosing important plan terms. Adobe fails to adequately disclose to consumers that by signing up for the “Annual, Paid Monthly” subscription plan (“APM plan”), they are agreeing to a year-long commitment and a hefty early termination fee (“ETF”) that can amount to hundreds of dollars. Adobe clearly discloses the ETF only when subscribers attempt to cancel, turning the stealth ETF into a powerful retention tool that by trapping consumers in subscriptions they no longer want. During enrollment, Adobe hides material terms of its APM plan in fine print and behind optional textboxes and hyperlinks, providing disclosures that are designed to go unnoticed and that most consumers never see. Adobe then deters cancellations by employing an onerous and complicated cancellation process. As part of this convoluted process, Adobe ambushes subscribers with the previously obscured ETF when they attempt to cancel. Through these practices, Adobe has violated federal laws designed to protect consumers.” To break it down for you, the U.S. government is alleging that Adobe is hiding secret fees and only springing them up on their customers when they try to cancel their subscriptions. They’re specifically talking about Adobe’s “annual, paid monthly” subscription plan; which is supposed to be the cheapest of the three plans. If you look at the screenshot above, you will notice that it says a fee will apply if you try to cancel it after 14 days. Any normal person would look at that and go “Oh, the fee couldn’t be more than a couple dozen dollars.” But nope. People hoping to cancel their subscriptions have to pay “50 percent of their remaining annual subscription,” according to Ars Technica. Here’s a more in-depth look at how much you would owe if you chose the “annual, paid monthly” plan and tried to cancel it. A subscription that is supposed to be only $60 a month could cost you over $200 to cancel. But the fees are one thing; another thing the U.S. government is accusing Adobe of is making the cancellation process too complicated. In fact, they have an entire section in the complaint they filed titled “Adobe’s Unlawful Cancellation Practices.” Here are some excerpts from it that immediately caught my attention. “Locating and clicking on a “Cancel your plan” button does not result in cancellation. Instead, after users have clicked “Cancel your plan,” Adobe has forced them to undergo a convoluted process requiring several additional steps, some of which were wholly unnecessary to complete cancellation.” “Additionally, consumers have had to navigate through several web pages, pop-ups, and offers designed for retention.” “Many subscribers attempting to cancel via phone or chat have been subjected to a time-consuming and burdensome process.” Although this all seems damning, Adobe won’t take it lying down. Dana Rao, Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Chief Trust Officer of Adobe, said in a statement: “Subscription services are convenient, flexible and cost effective to allow users to choose the plan that best fits their needs, timeline and budget. Our priority is to always ensure our customers have a positive experience. We are transparent with the terms and conditions of our subscription agreements and have a simple cancellation process. Dencun is specifically designed to solve the scalability problem of the Ethereum network. Ethereum's development plan consists of the following phases: this phase was aimed at transitioning Ethereum from the Proof Of Work consensus mechanism to Proof Of Stake. Previously, Ethereum L2 rollups used calldata to commit transactions, which represented more than 90% of the total cost of rollups. The main disadvantage of calldata is that this data is stored in Ethereum forever and is available at the execution and EVM level, which explains the high cost of this type of storage. Proto-danksharding, introduced as part of the Dencun upgrade, has been a key element in increasing scalability and reducing fees, making the Ethereum ecosystem more accessible and efficient for all its participants. Proto-danksharding, changes this model by presenting binary large objects of data that can be sent and attached to blocks. The data in these large binary objects are not accessible on the EVM and are stored at the consensus level. They are automatically deleted after a fixed period of time which at the time of writing is 4096 epochs or about 18 days. This data is needed in rollups only to check its validity or to appeal it, and this period is more than enough for this goal. This type of data storage is much cheaper in itself, and due to the fact that it is a temporary storage - there are no increasing hardware requirements to the network nodes. Thus, rollups can send their data much cheaper and ultimately reduce the cost of transactions for end users. The Ethereum Dencun upgrade with proto-dunksharding is an intermediate step to move into full dunksharding, which will provide even more space to reduce transaction costs even further, and lays down the basic concepts to realize this. As mentioned above, it introduces blob transactions to handle large amounts of data and reduce fees. The Dencun upgrade with proto-danksharding lays the foundation for a future where transaction data and its processing will be separated. The nearest crypto market horizons The Ethereum Dencun upgrade, represents a significant event for the entire ecosystem, opening the door for wider use and progression of decentralized applications. However, in addition to this, market attention is also turning to the upcoming Bitcoin halving, which is expected in April 2024. Halving is an event that reduces the block reward to miners by half, which means reducing its emission and decreasing supply. This time, the block reward will drop from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. I’ve been closely cooperating with both parts of our TA, developers, and influencers to know everything about their pains and preferences. As a result, we’ve built a truly beneficial platform for the gaming industry. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? I’d be building another startup :) At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? We consider several factors to evaluate the performance of our platform. Our North Star metric is GMV. We have been growing by 30% month over month. We are also looking into how much of that GMV has been generated by the returning customers since it indicates how satisfied they are with the platform and their results. We also pay attention to registering new influencers and the activity of those who have been with us for a while. We evaluate the number of companies they participate in simultaneously, the number of influencer actions they perform, and the percentage of their audience they bring to Drope.me. What goals are you looking forward to accomplishing in 2024? We plan to expand to working with UGC games, including Roblox and UEFN, and an additional integration on Drope.me. We also see opportunities to streamline the processes of launching and running the campaigns by integrating AI. More on that a bit later. We are also looking for business partnership opportunities with talent and marketing agencies, for example. We have an ongoing referral program that creates mutually beneficial opportunities. recently developed Which trend(s) are you most excited about in 2024? Share your reasons. The rise of AI and UGC. Artificial intelligence is everywhere now, and it’s something that I’m excited but careful about, too. There’s no discussion about its great help in every industry possible, starting from medicine and ending in gaming. But at the same time, we still have lots of things to learn to use and manage properly. There are many confidentiality issues, and adding AI features to every digital product isn’t the best idea either. But I guess when the hype slows down a bit, we can decide how to implement this incredible technology in the best way possible. As for the UGC, it represents a dynamic shift towards player-driven content creation, fostering a more interactive and immersive gaming ecosystem. With UGC, players become creators, generating their content within games. This trend encourages creativity and community engagement and extends the longevity of games as players continuously produce new content. Additionally, UGC provides game developers with valuable insights into player preferences and behaviors, enabling them to tailor future updates and releases to suit their audience better. 2023 had been another crazy year, especially in tech, with layoffs and the Generative AI takeover! Which trend are you most concerned about? Be as brief or as detailed as you like. That has been a tough year for the gaming industry as well. Macroeconomic risks and AI are definitely the factors influencing the landscape in the tech and gaming industries. However, I personally am more concerned with the russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I worry whether the Western powers will remain united in their efforts to support Ukraine and the democratic values of Ukrainians. Of course, this is personal since I am Ukrainian, and my family and friends are there. Still, if Ukraine loses, then this will be a major shift in the whole global security system that could lead to the escalation of war conflicts all over the world, and no one will be safe in that new security paradigm. Early warning systems that use machine learning to predict student outcomes (such as dropping out, scoring well on the ACTs, or attending college) are common in K-12 and higher education. Wisconsin public schools use an algorithmic model called the Dropout Early Warning System (DEWS) to predict how likely middle school students are to graduate from high school on time. Twice a year, schools receive a list of their enrolled students with DEWS’ color-coded prediction next to each name: green for low risk, yellow for moderate risk, or red for high risk of dropping out. But what many people, including school administrators and teachers, don’t know is that the algorithm uses factors outside of a student’s control—like race and free or reduced lunch-price status—to generate these predictions. found that after a decade of use and millions of predictions, DEWS may be negatively influencing how educators perceive students of color. And the state has known since 2021 that the predictions aren’t fair. Our investigation Three Key Findings DEWS is wrong nearly three quarters of the time when it predicts a student won’t graduate on time, and it’s wrong at significantly greater rates for Black and Hispanic students than it is for White students. The system labels students low, moderate, or high risk. Principals, superintendents, and other educators who use DEWS told us they received little training on how those predictions are generated. Students told us the high risk labels are stigmatizing and discouraging. A forthcoming from researchers based out of the University of California, Berkeley, who shared data and prepublication findings with The Markup found that DEWS has had no effect on graduation rates for students it labels high risk. But if schools used it to prioritize certain students, it could lead to students of color being “systemically overlooked and de-prioritized.” academic study The Background: Wisconsin’s Racial Gaps Wisconsin’s public school system has some of the country’s worst racial gaps. Last year, 94 percent of White students , compared to 82 percent of Hispanic and 71 percent of Black students. The gap between Black and White students’ reading and math test scores has been the widest of any state in the nation for more than a decade. graduated on time State officials created DEWS to help close those gaps. They hoped that by predicting which students would drop out by as early as sixth grade, educators could intervene in time to keep kids on course to graduate. As part of its biannual budget proposal in 2011, Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction (DPI), which was under the leadership of Tony Evers, who is now the state’s governor, $20 million for an “Every Child a Graduate” grant program that would send resources directly to struggling districts. But then-governor Scott Walker had a different plan for public education. In 2012, it began piloting DEWS. ↩︎ link What Wisconsin Students and Administrators Told Us Administrators aren’t trained on how to interpret DEWS “They just handed us the data and said, ‘Figure it out,’ ” said Sara Croney, the superintendent of Maple School District. DEWS Action Guide In response to The Markup’s questions about DEWS, staff from the School District of  Cudahy originally wrote that they hadn’t known about and didn’t currently use the predictions but that counselors were “excited about this resource.” However, after reviewing our findings, the district superintendent, Tina Owen-Moore, wrote, “That certainly changes my perspective!!” Students we interviewed were surprised to learn DEWS existed and were concerned that an algorithm was using their race to label them and predict their future “It makes the students of color feel like they’re separated … like they automatically have less,” said Christopher Lyons, a Black student who graduated from Bradford High School, in Kenosha, in 2022. Kennise Perry, 21, attended Milwaukee Public Schools, which are 49 percent Black, before moving to the suburb of Waukesha, where the schools are only 6 percent Black. She told The Markup her childhood was difficult, her home life sometimes unstable, and her schools likely considered her a “high risk” student. “But I feel that the difference between people who make it and people who don’t are the people you have around you, like I had people who cared about me and gave me a second chance and stuff,” Perry said. “[DEWS] listing these kids ‘high risk’ and their statistics, you’re not even giving them a chance, you’re already labeling them.” Wisconsin DPI spokesperson Abigail Swetz declined to answer questions about DEWS but provided a brief emailed statement “Is DEWS racist?” Swetz wrote. “No, the data analysis isn’t racist. It’s math that reflects our systems. The reality is that we live in a white supremacist society, and the education system is systemically racist. That is why the DPI needs tools like DEWS and is why we are committed to educational equity.” In response to our findings and further questions, she added, “You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how this system works. We stand by our previous response.” She did not explain what that fundamental misunderstanding was. How Does DEWS Work? DEWS is an ensemble of machine learning algorithms that are trained on years of data about Wisconsin students—such as their test scores, attendance, disciplinary history, free or reduced-price lunch status, and race—to calculate the probability that each sixth through ninth grader in the state will graduate from high school on time. If DEWS predicts that a student has less than a 78.5 percent chance of graduating (including margin of error), it labels that student high risk. How We Reported This To piece together how DEWS has affected the students it’s judged, The Markup examined unpublished research from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, analyzed 10 years of district-level DEWS data, interviewed students and school officials, and informally surveyed and collected responses from 80 of the state’s more than 400 districts about their use of the predictions. Our investigation shows that many Wisconsin districts use DEWS—38 percent of those that responded to our survey—and that the algorithms’ technical failings have been compounded by a lack of training for educators.
