A public blockchain needs the history of every transaction to be able to prove that you own an asset. A public blockchain does not need to explain you’re making the transaction. why Proprietary data and business logic should only be on a private blockchain. A communication bridge enables a private blockchain to transfer public blockchain assets. Cool, so with that said, let’s look at Dragonchain. So what — why is Dragonchain interesting? Smart contracts have the potential for operational efficiencies. Dragonchain makes it easy for developers to use smart contracts with familiar technologies. Dragonchain has five levels of nodes. It took me a few read throughs to get it. I promise it’s not as complex as it sounds at first. Lets say that Pet Co has determined that they should buy more dog treats from one of their vendors Bones R Us. Transaction Approval — L1 Is where the proprietary logic and data determine that Pet Co needs to buy dog toys from Bones R Us. Transaction Validation — L2 Validates that the transaction is valid for the L1 node based on the organization rules, e.g. Supply Chain team isn’t executing a contract to hire an engineer. Supply Chain team is approving a purchase order from an approved vendor Transaction Verification — L3 Checks that a diverse range of L2 nodes across the network validated the transaction. E.g. three signatures are required for a purchase order requiring someone from Finance, Legal and Logistics to sign off preventing three Engineers from completing the sign off Verification Observation — L4 Is an independent witnesses to the L3 node verifying the diversity requirements. Transaction Execution — L5 Is a bridge to a public blockchain to transferred ownership of resources. It can be even simpler if you trust all the actors in your private blockchain, then you only need L1 and L5. Who cares? This framework has application in healthcare, government, logistics and energy. Smart contracts may need the use of This makes them unsuitable for a public blockchain. Enter the private blockchain. proprietary business logic and private data. So how does this work? Surely all the data needs to be public if you want to move assets around on a public blockchain right? The answer is no. A public blockchain just needs to be able to prove that you own an asset, it doesn’t need to be able to explain why you changed the ownership. Yes, this could be done with a centralized system. But the problem is who designs and controls the centralized system? In our example is it Pet Co, Bones R Us, the delivery company? Let’s say it’s Bones R Us that has this awesome system, with an app for solving supply chain management problems. Does that mean that the delivery company has to have an app for every customer? This creates a problems if Pet Co has a unique business process that they need incorporated into the app. Pet Co is a massive customer for Bones R Us. Should Bones R Us create a specific app for Pet Co, or make the other customers use Pet Co’s process, or ….? A By having a common ledger, each company can build its own system customized to its processes. private blockchain solves these issues. Smart contracts also simplify auditing and allow for codifying business processes. Why Dragonchain? Although I’m a long-time fan of genetics research itself and considered pursuing a career in that field, I am not a fan of untested applications, especially on human subjects and agriculture. Time-stamped orders also allow Beaxy to prove there is no “line jumping”, as is sometimes seen in decentralized finance. Line jumping is where a faster trader sees a transaction hit the blockchain and puts the exact same transaction on the blockchain, but with a higher gas fee. The simple and easy-to-read report provides information essential to proving chain of custody by showing the transaction ID, timestamp, raw data, and the hash of Bitcoin and Ethereum. The proof report also shows the Transaction Security Value. This value shows, in real-time, how many dollars ($USD) of energy consumption has been used to secure a transaction. The security value of a transaction starts with millions of dollars of proof on the first day and increases to billions of dollars within a few months. Typically, when people want to know the history of they often ask about how it all started at Disney. It’s a great story and you can read about it . But, today I want to talk about a different origin story, albeit related, the Dragon. Dragonchain here Like most innovations, the Dragon solves a problem, in this case, software licensing. The world of software licensing may sound like a snooze fest but the software industry is expected to grow to $507.2 billion by 2021. $456.1 billion Although it may not feel exciting, licensing is necessary. We’re all familiar with agreeing to a set of terms to use a software program. In these terms, the software company, i.e the vendor, lays out the criteria for using its product. Software licensing has seen a change in its relatively short existence going from being fairly limiting to being pretty flexible. Perpetuated by the transition to an internet-based society, software (and the accompanying license) has gone from pay upfront to pay as you go. But, neither method is perfect and for that reason, the Dragon was invented. Before we dive into the innovation behind the Dragon and explain what the heck a micro-license is let's talk about the two methods of software licensing from which the Dragon hails. Version-Based Licensing Model Before the 1990s, version-based licensing was the method used for granting software application permissions. At that time, software was tangible and came in the form of a floppy disc, CD, or DVD. Using software from one of these mediums required consumers to purchase the software and agree to the terms before installing the code onto their systems. Version-based licensing had many attributes and served the industry well for quite some time. With this type of licensing, consumers maintained ownership of not only the software but any data that was created on the software. For businesses, version-based licensing offered some level of scalability, in that, additional licenses could be purchased and were easily transferable to new staff. But, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. As technology advances, software, operating systems, and hardware all need constant updates to stay useful. But, unfortunately, software companies will routinely discontinue support for a particular piece of software and those updates and patches are no longer available. The lack of updates puts consumers at risk for viruses, spyware, and data breaches. For this reason, consumers must maintain software integrity to guarantee safety and compatibility over time. For a business, if the size of the team is reduced or if a project comes to an end, version-based software licensing can sit dormant. So, even though the waste is reduced, the consumer is still paying for software use while it sits unused. The other problem with subscription-based licensing is data ownership. In version-based licensing data, ownership was retained. But in subscription-based licensing, once the subscription runs out, it is over. Consumers are required to “re-up” or lose the rights to the software and thus the data created. Even though subscription-based licensing is more convenient and beneficial to both consumers and vendors, it lacks the crucial ability for the consumer to keep access to their data.
