Chapter I The Outlaw of Torn Chapter I Here is a story that has lain dormant for seven hundred years. At first it was suppressed by one of the Plantagenet kings of England. Later it was forgotten. I happened to dig it up by accident. The accident being the relationship of my wife’s cousin to a certain Father Superior in a very ancient monastery in Europe. He let me pry about among a quantity of mildewed and musty manuscripts and I came across this. It is very interesting—partially since it is a bit of hitherto unrecorded history, but principally from the fact that it records the story of a most remarkable revenge and the adventurous life of its innocent victim—Richard, the lost prince of England. In the retelling of it, I have left out most of the history. What interested me was the unique character about whom the tale revolves—the visored horseman who—but let us wait until we get to him. It all happened in the thirteenth century, and while it was happening, it shook England from north to south and from east to west; and reached across the channel and shook France. It started, directly, in the London palace of Henry III, and was the result of a quarrel between the King and his powerful brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester. Never mind the quarrel, that’s history, and you can read all about it at your leisure. But on this June day in the year of our Lord 1243, Henry so forgot himself as to very unjustly accuse De Montfort of treason in the presence of a number of the King’s gentlemen. De Montfort paled. He was a tall, handsome man, and when he drew himself to his full height and turned those gray eyes on the victim of his wrath, as he did that day, he was very imposing. A power in England, second only to the King himself, and with the heart of a lion in him, he answered the King as no other man in all England would have dared answer him. “My Lord King,” he cried, “that you be my Lord King alone prevents Simon de Montfort from demanding satisfaction for such a gross insult. That you take advantage of your kingship to say what you would never dare say were you not king, brands me not a traitor, though it does brand you a coward.” Tense silence fell upon the little company of lords and courtiers as these awful words fell from the lips of a subject, addressed to his king. They were horrified, for De Montfort’s bold challenge was to them but little short of sacrilege. Henry, flushing in mortification and anger, rose to advance upon De Montfort, but suddenly recollecting the power which he represented, he thought better of whatever action he contemplated and, with a haughty sneer, turned to his courtiers. “Come, my gentlemen,” he said, “methought that we were to have a turn with the foils this morning. Already it waxeth late. Come, De Fulm! Come, Leybourn!” and the King left the apartment followed by his gentlemen, all of whom had drawn away from the Earl of Leicester when it became apparent that the royal displeasure was strong against him. As the arras fell behind the departing King, De Montfort shrugged his broad shoulders, and turning, left the apartment by another door. When the King, with his gentlemen, entered the armory he was still smarting from the humiliation of De Montfort’s reproaches, and as he laid aside his surcoat and plumed hat to take the foils with De Fulm, his eyes alighted on the master of fence, Sir Jules de Vac, who was advancing with the King’s foil and helmet. Henry felt in no mood for fencing with De Fulm, who, like the other sycophants that surrounded him, always allowed the King easily to best him in every encounter. De Vac he knew to be too jealous of his fame as a swordsman to permit himself to be overcome by aught but superior skill, and this day Henry felt that he could best the devil himself. The armory was a great room on the main floor of the palace, off the guard room. It was built in a small wing of the building so that it had light from three sides. In charge of it was the lean, grizzled, leather-skinned Sir Jules de Vac, and it was he whom Henry commanded to face him in mimic combat with the foils, for the King wished to go with hammer and tongs at someone to vent his suppressed rage. So he let De Vac assume to his mind’s eye the person of the hated De Montfort, and it followed that De Vac was nearly surprised into an early and mortifying defeat by the King’s sudden and clever attack. Henry III had always been accounted a good swordsman, but that day he quite outdid himself and, in his imagination, was about to run the pseudo De Montfort through the heart, to the wild acclaim of his audience. For this fell purpose he had backed the astounded De Vac twice around the hall when, with a clever feint, and backward step, the master of fence drew the King into the position he wanted him, and with the suddenness of lightning, a little twist of his foil sent Henry’s weapon clanging across the floor of the armory. For an instant, the King stood as tense and white as though the hand of death had reached out and touched his heart with its icy fingers. The episode meant more to him than being bested in play by the best swordsman in England—for that surely was no disgrace—to Henry it seemed prophetic of the outcome of a future struggle when he should stand face to face with the real De Montfort; and then, seeing in De Vac only the creature of his imagination with which he had vested the likeness of his powerful brother-in-law, Henry did what he should like to have done to the real Leicester. Drawing off his gauntlet he advanced close to De Vac. “Dog!” he hissed, and struck the master of fence a stinging blow across the face, and spat upon him. Then he turned on his heel and strode from the armory. De Vac had grown old in the service of the kings of England, but he hated all things English and all Englishmen. The dead King John, though hated by all others, he had loved, but with the dead King’s bones De Vac’s loyalty to the house he served had been buried in the Cathedral of Worcester. During the years he had served as master of fence at the English Court, the sons of royalty had learned to thrust and parry and cut as only De Vac could teach the art, and he had been as conscientious in the discharge of his duties as he had been in his unswerving hatred and contempt for his pupils. And now the English King had put upon him such an insult as might only be wiped out by blood. As the blow fell, the wiry Frenchman clicked his heels together, and throwing down his foil, he stood erect and rigid as a marble statue before his master. White and livid was his tense drawn face, but he spoke no word. He might have struck the King, but then there would have been left to him no alternative save death by his own hand; for a king may not fight with a lesser mortal, and he who strikes a king may not live—the king’s honor must be satisfied. Had a French king struck him, De Vac would have struck back, and gloried in the fate which permitted him to die for the honor of France; but an English King—pooh! a dog; and who would die for a dog? No, De Vac would find other means of satisfying his wounded pride. He would revel in revenge against this man for whom he felt no loyalty. If possible, he would harm the whole of England if he could, but he would bide his time. He could afford to wait for his opportunity if, by waiting, he could encompass a more terrible revenge. De Vac had been born in Paris, the son of a French officer reputed the best swordsman in France. The son had followed closely in the footsteps of his father until, on the latter’s death, he could easily claim the title of his sire. How he had left France and entered the service of John of England is not of this story. All the bearing that the life of Jules de Vac has upon the history of England hinges upon but two of his many attributes—his wonderful swordsmanship and his fearful hatred for his adopted country. By Dave Archer and Matt Hailey At we know that our technology or our processes will let us down at some point and that’s OK. , this is the second post in a series we hope to continue with in future. Skyscanner Having introduced our Post Mortem series Background We often roll out new features using configuration flags that can be set remotely. The web nodes, (known internally as the nodes) poll for these flags and their respective constraints (user in a particular market, served to a percentage of traffic, etc) and evaluate them on a per-request basis. scaffold Summary of the issue A long-time dormant bug in our scaffold codebase surfaced when we tried to roll out a change that would replace the provider we use for web crawler detection. The remote configuration flag was enabled, the evaluation of which triggered an infinite loop in request execution. This overloaded all our nodes causing the entire fleet to fall over. During production incidents, our process usually starts with reverting recent changes (including remote configuration flags), but this proved to be problematic for a few reasons: We didn’t roll back the offending configuration correctly in the first instance, meaning we ended up chasing our tails for a few hours Our scaffold servers run under IIS. With this kind of catastrophic failure, IIS shuts down the application pool after seeing too many consecutive errors, meaning the nodes did not automatically pick up changes we were trying to make to remote configuration flags Eventually the offending configuration was correctly reverted, nodes restarted and order restored. During the incident The root cause of this issue is outlined in its own section below. What is more interesting with this issue in particular is the sequence of events during the incident that lead to this being one of our longest-lived outages. For brevity, the sequence is listed here in point form. ‘Crawler detection provider’ flag enabled for 1% of requests * Web nodes crash as they pick up the new configuration and evaluate the flag ‘Crawler detection provider’ incorrectly rolled back. The flag value was set from TRUE to FALSE but the constraints were left in place**. This was the point after which we were investigating based on false assumptions Incorrect assumption was made that the nodes were struggling to start up and fetch the updated remote configuration (see the section below ‘ Why did it take so long…’ ) Attempts were made to protect the servers from traffic to allow them to start up with the updated remote configuration Manually copied updated configuration to a portion of nodes. Issue still persisted, indicating the problem was within the configuration itself Fully rolled back the remote configuration setup Nodes begin to recover and serve traffic successfully * The 1% flag is evaluated on all requests on all nodes, but the feature is only activated for 1% of requests ** The issue was not with the new code path, but rather the evaluation of constraints Additional factors contributed to the time to fully diagnose and resolve the issue, including: The configuration UI was unavailable during the outage. It had not yet been removed from the monolithic scaffold codebase (though the underlying service had). All dashboards were unavailable due to an unrelated, but unfortunately timed, issue with our data platform. Attempts to drain individual data centres at the Akamai (our CDN) level didn’t have the desired effect; drained data centres continued to receive traffic. The root cause of which is out of scope for this report, though a separate investigation was launched. Root Causes As mentioned above, we were in the process of changing providers for crawler detection. Wanting to do this safely, we chose to put the switch behind a configuration flag and use an ‘experiment’(term is used very lightly here) constraint to slowly ramp up traffic to the new provider. To identify a request as a web crawler, the Scaffolding must evaluate the configuration flag to choose a between the two crawler detection providers Evaluation requires checking all constraints defined in Config Service; in this case the experiment constraint was of particular interest To avoid a network call, allocation to experiment variants is performed by a fat client of our Dr Jekyll (our experiment platform) based on selected request attributes One attribute indicates whether request originated from a crawler However, because of a similar flag related to this roll out, determining whether a request is from a crawler again depends on experiment allocation data, which leads to a circular dependency: crawler information requires experiment data, which is evaluated based on crawler information Allocation parameters are calculated once per website request inside a critical section defined by a mutually-exclusive, request-scoped lock. Recurrent evaluation of parameters triggered by crawler information request lead to IIS application pools being stopped. Time to Detect Target is , actual was while Time to Resolution — Target is , actual was . Our detection centres raised the bug through automated reports, our internal slack channel for employees to report issues flagged this, while we also received user reports through our user satisfaction team and our Twitter channels. 15 mins four mins 60 mins 215 mins The impact? On our web products, travellers visiting the web site were served the Houston error page. For our mobile apps, users redirecting to partners are sent via browser, meaning travellers using our apps could not complete any bookings. We also saw an impact to SEO within one hour of the bug surfacing. Our Houston error page Questions Why wasn’t this issue detected before impacting production? The new feature was fully enabled in pre-prod via configuration flag. However, it wasn’t enabled with an experiment as a constraint; it was switch from 0% to 100% via config only. Up until this incident, this was relatively standard practise for us. Automated test coverage was also missing the production case of both configuration and experiment constraint enabled. Why did it take so long to fix when the cause was detected early on? The configuration update was identified as the trigger early on. To attempt to fix it, the entry was changed from TRUE to FALSE. However, (we now know) the root issue was caused by the constraint, which still existed. When the team attempted to bring Scaffold servers back online (by restarting the IIS app pool) they immediately fell over again. The (incorrect) assumption at the time was that the Scaffold servers weren’t picking up the latest config before falling over. The team then copied the latest config file to Scaffold boxes before restarting (to bypass the polling mechanism in Scaffold). However, the Scaffold servers still fell over when restarted. With this new knowledge, the config entry was fully deleted (Scaffold has safe defaults to fall back on when no config available). The app pools were restarted and this time the Scaffold servers picked up the new config and stayed online. Key Learnings Test the combination of config + experimentation safely prior to production (config had been tested, but not with a backing experiment) Revert erroneous config/experiment value if identified as cause of issue rather than fix forward Separate systems as much as possible to limit impact of an outage (Scaffold + Config UI, in this case) Fully understand and consider blast radius of changes — limit where ever possible Site stability likely causes such an impacton user performance metrics (time between searches because of quick bounces) and impact SEO Feedback from the team Regardless of the specifics of this incident, we needed to ensure we limited the blast radius and fault domain of any release in future. Our mechanism for limiting traffic to the 1% mentioned above was a software-based decision where it should have been physically limited to code running on a subset of nodes. We needed to freeze other experiments during outages to prevent a snowball effect and confusion around root causes. We needed to understand the blast radius and limiting it and how to experiment in future without such a big risk. All of the above has now been addressed. What do you think? And it seems that franchises once thought dead are brought back to life fairly consistently. However, that’s not the case for every IP. F-Zero 1. Twisted Metal Even though this franchise is flourishing as a TV show on the streaming service Peacock, Twisted Metal hasn’t had a new installment in its franchise since 2012 which still seems like a huge surprise to me. I would’ve put Twisted Metal as a PlayStation staple in the same realm as God of War, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, etc. And what makes this sting even more is that there is no real competitor to Twisted Metal that you can turn to instead. The vehicular combat genre isn’t exactly flourishing, so if you wanted to play games similar to Twisted Metal, there’s nowhere to turn. P.S. While we’re on the subject of PlayStation games, it would be great to see another installment in the Infamous or even the Sly Cooper franchise. 2. Rayman Oh Rayman fans, how I weep for you. Although Rayman the character pops up in other games such as the Rabbids series and the Mario + Rabbids series, it’s been quite a while since he’s had his own game. And no, I’m not including the mobile games that he’s had. The last installment in the Rayman series was Rayman Legends back in 2013. It’s been a whole 11 years since we’ve jumped into the world of Rayman, and to put it very bluntly, the future of Rayman does not look good at all. Ubisoft does not seem interested in reviving the franchise at all, and Creative Director Davide Soliani, who worked at Ubisoft for 25 years and who was a huge advocate for Rayman, announced that he was leaving the company earlier this year. It’s never say never, but I would definitely not hold my breath waiting for a new Rayman game. 3. Banjo-Kazooie From one dormant platformer franchise to the next, Banjo-Kazooie is in a similar boat as Rayman. This gaming franchise made its debut on the Nintendo 64, and it seemed like it had great potential. And a lot of that potential was realized; I’m not going to sit here and act as if Banjo-Kazooie is a failure. But it’s been a long time since we’ve had a new game in the franchise. We’ve had re-releases, so you can play Banjo-Kazooie on the Nintendo Switch if you have Nintendo Switch Online + the Expansion Pack or you can play the game and its two sequels on Xbox. You can also play as Banjo & Kazooie in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While these experiences are cool, it doesn’t make up for the fact that it’s been 16 years since its last installment. And Rare, the developer behind the franchise, seems to be extremely occupied with the mega-successful game Sea of Thieves. So, who knows when they’ll have time to work on another Banjo-Kazooie. 4. Darkstalkers Out of all the games on this list, I think Darkstalkers has the biggest chance of making a comeback. Although Rayman and Banjo-Kazooie make appearances here and there, they feel as if they’ve been left behind by Ubisoft and Rare respectively. The same can’t be said for Darkstalkers. The franchise has had numerous compilations with the most recent one being the Capcom Fighting Collection, where 5 of the Darkstalkers games were included. Plus, multiple Darkstalkers characters have been a part of the Marvel vs. Capcom series. It’s clear that the franchise is still deep in the heart of Capcom, and although I can’t say that I expect a game anytime soon, I will be very surprised if we don’t see a new installment sometime in the future. 5. F-Zero If we’re talking about dormant franchises, there’s probably none more well-known than Nintendo’s F-Zero; it’s basically become the poster boy for franchises that deserve to come back. Captain Falcon, its main character, is more well-known for being a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series than he is for starring in the F-Zero series. The last F-Zero game to come out was actually F-Zero 99 just last year; it’s a battle royale game for the Nintendo Switch. However, it’s been 20 whole years since we’ve had a true F-Zero game. Maybe Nintendo thinks that because Mario Kart is wildly successful that it doesn’t make sense to work on F-Zero as well; that maybe there’s no room for two racing game franchises. I hope that’s not the case because that just sounds ridiculous. I could see a future where we get another Banjo-Kazooie game or another Darkstalkers game, but for some reason, I seriously can’t imagine a timeline where we get another F-Zero game. I never thought I would be going to Spain, but she found some unknown funds from generous donors. Suddenly, I was on an airplane to Spain with her and 5 or 6 other students.\ I was a good student and rather than being someone whose comportment my teacher worried about, she was encouraging me to be less uptight. \ “Try the sangria.”\ I know she thought this experience would change my life, but I don’t think she knew when that would happen. \ My Spanish was just a little better at the time than the other students. I remember being a human dictionary for them (a teen Google Translate of sorts) when they wanted to tell a shopkeeper what flavor of candy or ice cream they wanted. “Fresa.”   “Strawberry”\ I remember the smell of fried sardines the mother of my host family made. It was so delicious! And I recall the pounds I gained from the rich chorizo and chocolates she packed for me to take in a sack lunch. Though our student budget was slim, we did go into the urban areas of Madrid once or twice to see the Prado Museum and Fountain of Cibeles. I remember having very little pocket money. I did not buy any souvenirs. I was able to buy a Spanish chocolate candy bar to bring back home for a “best” friend who was disappointed when she saw it. “You got me a chocolate bar from Spain? That’s it?”\ I was not a hardy traveler and it took me a while to get over the strenuous emotional changes that happen sometimes with international travel. Wanderlust lay dormant for decades, but ultimately, I decided to travel again. My experiences led me to return to Spain this year. I have been studying Spanish part time and online for the past 2 years. My ability to understand and even speak Spanish has increased some. I have a greater appreciation for learning this and any language as well as the cultures of the Spanish speaking world. While I am far from fluent in Spanish even with continued study, I am improving and I greatly appreciate my high school teacher, Susan Stucker, for her encouragement and for broadening my worldview at an early age. I was worried about going on this trip but it was not because I did not want to go. I was experiencing a fear of leaving my comfort zone. My short trip with a tour group took me again to the northern suburbs of Spain and to the Prado Museum, but I also traveled to a few other cities and experienced a Spain much different than the one from my youth. Though it was not on the itinerary, someone on my trip convinced me to go with her and others to a bullfight. This would not have been something I chose to do ordinarily, but I tried to go into this experience with an open mind and see what I could learn. I got a ticket for the bullfight but because we had waited until the last minute to get seating, there were no seats together. I bought a seat far away from the others. As I tried to climb the stadium steps to my seat, I asked other spectators along the way for help finding my spot. I did sit in the wrong place (awkward as ever) and had to be notified by my neighbors. Ultimately, I found a spot to sit on the concrete and I watched the bullfight respectfully and peacefully, taking occasional pictures like a tourist, and speaking whatever garbled Spanish I knew with my kind neighbors to either side. I won’t pretend I know much about the history or actual meaning of bullfighting. I also can’t comment on the animal safety aspects of this because I don’t know much about that. I tried to show respect for the cultural event and come to the stadium with a beginner’s mind. With these caveats in mind, I just want to share what I felt internally and what I learned about confidence from the bullfight. The bullfight occurs in a large arena in a stadium. This arena seemed to me like a metaphor for life. Death likely occurs in the arena and comes for someone. There is a living being that will not get out of the arena alive. Will it be the bull? Will it be the matador? There are more humans in the arena that work together to stack the deck against the bull. It's not fair? Life isn’t fair. The circumstances that bring the bull and the matador to the arena are governed by chance as well. Both the matadors and the bull have the potential to kill each other in the arena. I found that I could not look away. The reason I could not look away was that I felt connected to the bull and matador in their actions to relive what I felt were the lessons of the arena, the lessons of life. In the arena, the matadors must distract the bull from hurting them and also actively seek the bull’s death. I was told that the bull must be naive to the ways of bullfighting to participate. During the process, the matador leads with confidence and hides whatever fear he might have of the bull’s size, aggression and ferocity. There is a potential for severe disability and even death if the bull harms the matador, but it is crucial that the matadors never break character. They work as a team to distract, confuse and wound the bull. The matadors play to an audience of hundreds drawing all eyes to them in a spectacle who bellow “Olé" in a pleased fashion if they are doing well. The 5 rules of the matador:

All eyes on you In life, I can see how important it is to lead with confidence no matter how afraid you might feel. Confidence comes with experience and failure. Never break character to show vulnerability. It's only if you break character that anyone might notice if you messed up or that things have not gone as planned.  Good teamwork can prevent failure in many situations. Finally, there is always an audience that judges you on everything you try. I can only imagine that if I was the bull what I would learn. The bull is a tremendously strong and dangerous animal that I was told was bred to be aggressive. During the course of the bullfight, the matadors confuse and wound the bull several times. If the bull runs after the matadors, it takes the bait and begins the bullfight. If the bull does not run towards the matadors and is pacifist it will be set free. I tried to learn from the experience so that their sacrifices would teach me something. What I learned about confidence from this experience was so valuable to me. We are all dancing a dance of mindset when we are trying to be confident. We don’t want to show the enemy our fears so that we can vanquish them. Whether it's facing a micromanaging boss or an ex that hates your guts and is sashaying with their new girlfriend in your direction, there are people with whom and times at which it's important to show how unafraid you are. The bravado protects you more than actually not feeling afraid. Being genuine and vulnerable has its place, but so does hiding your flaws and exhibiting confidence like a shiny coat of armor. My trip to Spain was short, but what I learned from my experiences might last a long time.  I don't think my high school Spanish teacher would have expected that I would learn my Spanish lessons decades later. They are life lessons instead. I don’t think she expected her good deed to help me get to Spain for the student exchange would have this effect. But then again, neither did I.
