As a result, Elasticsearch cannot simply make an in-place update to a document. The only way to perform an update is to reindex the entire document, regardless of which API is used. Elasticsearch uses Apache Lucene under the hood. A Lucene index is composed of one or more segments. A segment is a self-contained, immutable index structure that represents a subset of the overall index. When documents are added or updated, new Lucene segments are created and older documents are marked for soft deletion. Over time, as new documents are added or existing ones are updated, multiple segments may accumulate. To optimize the index structure, Lucene periodically merges smaller segments into larger ones. Updates are essentially inserts in Elasticsearch Since each update operation is a reindex operation, all updates are essentially inserts with soft deletes. There are cost implications for treating an update as an insert operation. On one hand, the soft deletion of data means that old data is still being retained for some time, bloating the storage and memory of the index. Performing soft deletes, reindexing and garbage collection operations also take a heavy toll on the CPU, a toll that is exacerbated by repeating these operations on all replicas. Updates can get more tricky as your product grows and your data changes over time. To keep Elasticsearch performant, you will need to update the shards, analyzers, and tokenizers in your cluster, requiring a reindexing of the entire cluster. For production applications, this will require setting up a new cluster and migrating all of the data over. Migrating clusters is both time-intensive and error prone so it's not an operation to take lightly. Updates in Elasticsearch The simplicity of the update operations in Elasticsearch can mask the heavy operational tasks happening under the hood of the system. Elasticsearch treats each update as an insert, requiring the full document to be recreated and reindexed. For applications with frequent updates, this can quickly become expensive as we saw in the Netflix example where millions of updates happen every minute. We recommend either batching updates using the , which adds latency to your workload, or looking at alternative solutions when faced with frequent updates in Elasticsearch. Bulk API Rockset, a search and analytics database built in the cloud, is a mutable alternative to Elasticsearch. One powerful way that can help us accurately measure the performance of our code is a process called benchmarking and we’ll look at how to use BenchmarkDotNet with our C# code. software engineers In this article, we’ll explore the ins and outs of using BenchmarkDotNet to benchmark C# code efficiently. We’ll be starting with the setup and I’ll guide you through examples of how to write benchmarks and run them as well. By the end, you’ll be able to write and run benchmarks on your C# code using BenchmarkDotNet effectively. Let’s jump into it! 1 – Installing and Setting Up BenchmarkDotNet The first step is to in your project. You can do this by opening the NuGet Package Manager in Visual Studio and searching for “BenchmarkDotNet.” Select the latest version and click on the Install button to add it to your project. There are no other external dependencies or anything fancy that you need to do to get going. install the BenchmarkDotNet package As you’ll see in the following sections, it’s purely code configuration after the NuGet package is installed! It’s worth mentioning that BenchmarkDotNet automatically performs optimizations during benchmarking C# code, such as JIT warm-up and running benchmarks in a random order, to provide accurate and unbiased results. But this all happens without you having to do anything special. Keep in mind, that just like with writing tests, you’ll very likely want to have your benchmark code in a dedicated project. This will allow you to release your core code separately from your benchmarks. There are probably not a lot of great reasons to deploy your benchmark code with your service or ship your benchmark code to your customers. 2 – Getting Started With Benchmark Methods in BenchmarkDotNet When it comes to writing benchmark methods using the BenchmarkDotNet framework, there are a few things we need to configure properly. In this section, I’ll guide you on how to write effective benchmark methods that accurately measure the performance of your C# code. Follow these guidelines: : Start by creating a dedicated class for your benchmarks. This keeps your benchmark code organized and separate from the rest of your application code. Create a separate class for benchmarks : Select the appropriate type of benchmark job you’d like to run by marking your benchmark class with one of the following attributes , , , or . Apply the correct [XXXRunJob] attribute [ShortRunJob] [MediumRunJob] [LongRunJob] [VeryLongRunJob] attribute: To enable memory measurements during the benchmark, apply the attribute to your benchmark class. This attribute allows you to gather memory-related information along with execution time. If you’re strictly concerned about runtime and not memory, you can omit this. Apply the [MemoryDiagnoser] [MemoryDiagnoser] Note that your class cannot be sealed. I’d recommend just sticking to a standard definition with the appropriate attributes from above. You can have your benchmark class inherit from something else though, so if you find there’s a benefit to using some inheritance here for reusability, that might be a viable option. public class Writing Benchmark Methods Benchmark methods are where you define the code that you want to measure. Here are some tips for writing benchmark methods using BenchmarkDotNet: Apply the attribute: Each benchmark method needs the attribute. This attribute tells BenchmarkDotNet that this method should be treated as a benchmark. [Benchmark] [Benchmark] Avoid setup costs in benchmark methods: Benchmark methods should focus on measuring the performance of the code itself, not the cost of initializing your benchmark scenario. Avoid allocations and overuse of memory: Benchmark methods should not be concerned with the overhead caused by memory allocations. Minimize allocations and reduce memory usage within your benchmark methods to get accurate performance measurements. Note that BenchmarkDotNet handles all of the warmup for you – You don’t need to go out of your way to manually code in doing iterations ahead of time to get things to a steady state before benchmarking C# code. Establishing a Baseline Benchmark in BenchmarkDotNet When analyzing benchmark results, several key metrics can provide valuable insights into the performance of your code. But what can be challenging is understanding what you’re trying to compare against. If you simply have two implementations you are trying to compare against, it may not feel that challenging. However, when you’re comparing many you likely want to establish a baseline to see your improvements (or regressions). Dependency injection is a popular approach to configuring applications that promotes loose coupling and improves testability and maintainability. It involves injecting dependencies into a class rather than directly creating them within the class. This means that the responsibility of creating the dependency is not owned by the class requiring it, but instead, owned by someone up the call stack. Eventually, this pushes nearly all dependency creation to the entry point of an application, making it unwieldy. However,  dependency injection frameworks help . clean up and organize all of this logic Scrutor takes this concept a step further by providing a simple and intuitive way to register and resolve dependencies. By properly configuring the Autofac container, we ensure that the correct dependencies are injected into our objects, promoting modularity and testability in our codebase. In a later tip, we’ll see how we can resolve dependencies in different ways. To configure the Autofac container in a C# application, follow these steps (assuming you already followed tip 1 to get Autofac installed): Create Your Class or Method For Configuration I like . However, there’s nothing that says we have to! So we can look at just creating a class here that will house our registration logic. We can make a static class called . organizing my registration code into Autofac modules AutofacConfig Inside the class, we create a static method, let’s name it , which takes an parameter. This method will handle the registration of dependencies inside the Autofac container. This is shaping up to be very much like a “Module”, but I wanted to show you that you’re not forced into that if you don’t want to be. AutofacConfig ConfigureContainer IContainerBuilder Here’s an example: public static void ConfigureContainer(ContainerBuilder builder)
{
    // Register dependencies here
    builder.RegisterType<MyDependency>().As<IMyDependency>();
    builder.RegisterType<MyService>().As<IMyService>();
} In the code snippet above, we register two dependencies: and . The method indicates the interfaces they implement, and , respectively. We have a lot of different flexibility we can look at here, ranging from how you resolve the types to singleton behavior of these types. The configuration can get very complex, but Autofac has many powerful features that you can leverage to register things as you need. MyDependency MyService As IMyDependency IMyService Container From ContainerBuilder in Autofac In the method or the entry point of our application, we need to instantiate the Autofac container and call the method to configure it. Here’s an example: Main ConfigureContainer static void Main(string[] args)
{
    var builder = new ContainerBuilder();
    AutofacConfig.ConfigureContainer(builder);
    var container = builder.Build();

    // Continue with the application logic
} In the code snippet above, we create an instance of the class, call the method from the class, and then build the container using the method. After that, the container is ready to resolve and inject dependencies throughout the application. ContainerBuilder ConfigureContainer AutofacConfig Build As to avoid the anti-pattern called “The Service Locator Pattern”, it’s generally recommended to resolve something like the main dependency out of your container to kick off the rest of your application. Otherwise, we might find ourselves in a position where we’re passing the container around to different places and trying to resolve dependencies out of it. In reality, those other things resolving dependencies off the container manually should probably just be classes wired up to the container to do auto-resolution. Tip 3: Resolving Dependencies in Autofac In software engineering, dependency resolution refers to the process of providing an instance of a class or interface to another class that depends on it. In Autofac, resolving system. dependencies is made easy through its container-based dependency injection When it comes to resolving dependencies using Autofac, there are a few different approaches you can take. Let’s explore some of them: Constructor Injection in Autofac This is the most common approach to injecting dependencies in Autofac. With constructor injection, dependencies are passed to a class through its constructor. This allows for easy testing and makes dependencies explicit. You get the most “magic” out of this approach because the resolution can happen for you automatically with very little effort. This is my go-to way of wiring up my dependencies in 99.9% of what I do. Here’s an example: public class UserService : IUserService
{
    private readonly IUserRepository _userRepository;

    public UserService(IUserRepository userRepository)
    {
        _userRepository = userRepository;
    }

    // Class implementation...

UserService IUserRepository IUserRepository Method Injection in Autofac Another option in Autofac is method injection, where dependencies are provided through specific methods. This can be useful when you need to inject dependencies dynamically or at specific times. Here’s an example: public class Logger

    public void Log(string message)
    {
        // Logging implementation...
    }
}

public class Worker
{
    private Logger _logger;

    public void SetLogger(Logger logger)
    {
        _logger = logger;
    }

    // Other class implementation...
}

Autofac allows you to configure this injection, but it takes a little bit more manual effort than if we used constructors. Worker SetLogger Logger Property Injection in Autofac In some cases, you may want to inject dependencies through properties rather than constructors. Like method injection, we can manually set the property inside of our registration hook up on the container. Here’s an example: public class Logger

}); While this example is nearly identical to method injection, property injection can get significantly more complicated with Autofac. Truthfully, it’s not something I’ve ever had to use and while I wouldn’t say I actively design to “avoid it” — I have certainly never designed anything that needed it. Remember, in all cases, you’ll need to configure the Autofac container with the appropriate dependencies during setup. This is typically done in the application’s composition root.
