Over 80% of all on-chain liquidity is locked between the two virtual machines, (EVM hosting over ~71% and the SVM around ~8.45%). Regardless of their lead, as history shows us, nothing is final. Nothing is certain—only change. Even if Ethereum owns the majority of current developer mindshare and hosts most of the industry's liquidity inside of its EVM, the relative size of the crypto industry & the depth to which it has integrated itself with society is negligible at best. Sitting at a market capitalization of 2.5 trillion USD (most of which is illiquid), the entire crypto industry is worth less than the equities of ~5,509 public companies listed on the NYSE & NASDAQ (which are in aggregate floating around ~72.63 trillion). As staunch capitalists, we have unironically quoted Lenin before, and will again, because the quote is so apt for crypto markets: “There are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks where decades happen”. In June we witnessed another crypto price crash. This should not surprise long-term HODL-ers, as Bitcoin has had many crashes of 50-80% in its 13-year history (these sharp drops are often historically followed by 600-1000% gains). What is surprising, is how many crypto analysts, investors, and institutions got it wrong. Most of these casualties borrowed too much money, forgot about diversification, and were unprepared for the inevitable crypto drop. In June alone: Singaporean crypto fund manager Three Arrows Capital (3AC) imploded, due to a mix of bad investments (Terra/LUNA) and massive debt DeFi darling Celsius paused withdrawals pending its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (another victim of bad investing and high debts) BlockFi lost hundreds of millions of dollars in bad debts Blockchain.com announced it may lose $270 million lent to 3AC Fund manager Voyager Capital lost half a billion (bad debts at 3AC) Babel Finance lost a billion (bad debts, much to 3AC) CoinBase sacked almost 20% of its workforce, COIN stock dropped by 80% But it seems that some people had been sitting on “dry powder”, waiting for the drop, so that they could invest more funds at lower prices. MicroStrategy (Michael Saylor) bought another $10 million in Bitcoin; making them the largest holder of BTC on the planet, and having twice as much BTC as Tesla FTX offered to buy the struggling Voyager Capital Binance advertised for 2000 new job openings, and raised $500M in new VC funding for Binance Labs Paypal allows for the purchase and transfer of several cryptocurrencies to external wallets for the first time Solana Labs announced the development of a SOL crypto smartphone Someone transferred US$42 333 777 in and paid a fee of $4.61. That’s a transaction fee of 0.00001088%! No government bank or third party had to verify the transaction, nor could they have stopped it. #Bitcoin After the flash crash, many larger cap coins have staged small recoveries, including BTC jumping from under US$19 000 to over US$21 000, and Ethereum bouncing up from under US$900 to over US$1400 What is also interesting, is that prior to, and immediately during the big drop, crypto was behaving like the stock market. Cryptocurrency movements were highly correlated with movements of tech stocks (remember that 50- 80% June 2022 drops were not just in crypto; we also saw 50-80% drops in stocks such as ). Zoom, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Tesla and PayPal As we enter a small recovery, it seems that crypto markets have decoupled from tech stocks, and are recovering independently and faster than their Wall Street peers. Interesting times indeed. Whether you dollar-cost-averaged (DCA) by buying every day, week or month, whether you bought at the absolute bottom or bought at the top, it is claimed that nobody has ever lost money if they held Bitcoin for four years. The same cannot be said for the stock market. By the way, if you want to have an idea of where crypto is heading next year, check the historical patterns. The chart below shows a big dip in 2014, 2018, and 2022, followed by a massive rise. Past performance is no guarantee of the future, however, it does bring a sense of optimism that the next few years may be good for crypto. Weathering the storms As Bitcoin and crypto consolidate after a large drop, a few companies are trying to pick up the pieces. The entire crypto market capitalization was down 33% for June, and Bitcoin funds such as Digital X and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust are down around 34-35%. Bostoncoin has weathered the storms as well as possible, with large drops in some token prices presenting opportunities. Key Takeaways It seems that Three Arrows Capital (3AC) were not only irresponsibly bullish (“price always goes up, right?”) but they also forgot about diversification. Considering there are around 15 000-20 000 crypto projects, it seems crazy that someone would put 40-50% of their available capital into a brand-new and untested coin (Terra/LUNA). The US$1 billion that 3AC put into LUNA is now worth under $700.00, representing a massive 99.99% loss. Even though crypto is the “new kid on the block” and can sometimes seem like a shiny new toy that makes all other investments obsolete, it is wise to look back at history and the lessons investors have learned over millennia. Whether investing into old technology such as timber forestry, or new tech such as Tesla, one must always remember to diversify (“eggs in different baskets”) and keep your debts manageable. The truth may soon come out in the bankruptcy courts, but rumors currently abound that some of the crypto platforms mentioned above may have carried debt that was up to twenty times their assets. Bostoncoin has managed to avoid becoming a casualty of the 3AC crisis by diversifying into 30-40 different projects and having debts from 0-10% maximum. Other crypto funds that held debts that were between 40% and 120% are now casualties. Around the globe as we enter the last half of 2022, investors see interest rates rising again, stimulus packages drying up, ongoing war and supply chain issues, and possible downturns in housing as well as stock markets. Jordan, and BDC Consulting’s own CBDO, Paul Moukhine. The experts discussed the future of the metaverse, GameFi, Web 3.0, and what’s in store for Bitcoin in 2022 – and while they often disagreed, the discussion brought out many valuable insights. Cryptovo YouTube channel 2022 will be the year of ‘baby steps’ for the metaverse The metaverse remains one of the biggest tech trends, though the round table participants expressed very different views over its meaning and short-term prospects. For O.J. Jordan, it’s an interactive virtual reality experience, and blockchain technology is what VR needs to finally take off. He predicted that the metaverse market could reach $800 billion by 2024, up over 10x from today’s $70bn. But for Mary Carracho, the metaverse space needs more time to figure itself out. While it will be very interesting to watch NFTs move across virtual spaces, many other technologies (besides blockchain) make up the metaverse. Evolving regulations will have an effect, too. Because of this complex interplay, 2022 will be mostly about ‘baby steps’ interspersed with ‘aha!’ moments as more brands realize that it’s worth entering this industry. To this, Hans Koning added that for many people, the best way to participate in the trend could be just owning assets, such as virtual land, without being personally active in the metaverse. He named Decentraland and OpenSea as projects with great potential, as well as MetaBrands, with which he works as an advisor. Non-fungible tokens offer the direct ownership and royalty opportunities that artists have always needed. With NFTs, musicians can finally take back control over their earnings. At the same time, the experts noted that the NFT market is still in the speculative bubble stage - similar to the ICO hype of 2017-18 when many people ended by selling at a loss. A similar thing could happen with NFTs, though this doesn’t negate their transformative role. Web 3.0 and regulation Many think that a new, distributed web will replace the centralized internet we’re used to. But Mary Carracho stressed that until decentralized technology becomes as easy to use as centralized services, it will remain no more than a ‘playground’ for people who understand how to make money off it. Web 3.0 is all about privacy and the desire to own one’s data that stems from a deep-rooted mistrust in society. The desire for a self-sovereign identity will be the key issue in 2022, though the transition to a true Web 3.0 will be drawn-out because of the natural inertia of people and businesses. The evolution of blockchain regulation will be paramount for Web 3.0 – but here, the experts don’t expect any drastic moves in 2022. Regulatory ambiguity is likely to continue, with ‘semantic’ battles over the definition of utility tokens, for example. Interestingly, Hans Koning believes that the US regulators’ indecisive position creates a real risk that the States will miss out on the enormous opportunity and be leapfrogged by other, more crypto-friendly countries. Ultimately, as Hans Kerner pointed out, there will always be someone calling for $20k and someone expecting $1 million, and the truth will almost certainly be somewhere in between. In this article, I plan to explain how easy it is to scrape Tweets from Twitter in Python3 using Tweepy’s Twitter API. This data can be accessed by Twitter’s API  and Tweepy which ended up being the most successful method. I plan to focus on scraping specific user Tweet replies, since I have not discovered any tutorials which specifically highlight how to extract Tweet replies. Projects like IOST, NEM, EOS, and TRON have offered various DeFi elements, but for now they remain less popular in terms of launching top decentralized exchanges or distributed apps. The newly launched networks, especially created with DeFi in mind, will have to prove their relevance and longevity. One of the challenges they face is the ETH 2.0 network, which will add faster transactions and lower gas fees for trading. Currently, automated swaps are not cheap on Ethereum and it may discourage some users from DeFi trading. High gas fees on the Ethereum blockchain also triggered the trend of Binance Smart Chain tokens and pairs, seeking the same high turnover with lower fees. But there is another fundamental difference in terms of project success. ETH and BTC have been used as collateral for multiple DeFi projects. These large-cap coins have a vast network of exchanges, and their liquidity extends to the mainstream financial sector, with new fiat inflows from corporations and retail buyers. New crypto projects, however, are just beginning to build up their value and their liquidity. The native tokens used as collateral are still in the price discovery stage, and the communities supporting the coins are fairly niche. There are multiple examples of new projects fueling social media hype, only to lose most of their liquidity within hours in events known as “rug pulls”. Additionally, there is the question of the total cap of the ETH supply. Despite a lower block reward, there is still no end to the creation of new ETH tokens. Alternative blockchains, on the other hand, have a more detailed roadmap about the planned scarcity of their native assets. Some projects have looked ahead into the future. Different statistics in the cryptocurrency industry aren’t always entwined. Some will see the popularity of OTC trading volume as a result of more people being interested in DeFi and yield farming. In reality, they couldn’t be further from the truth. Those who explore OTC markets are not the target audience for decentralized finance, at least in its current form. Bitcoin OTC Trading is a Booming Segment Figuring out the exact volume passing through Bitcoin OTC trading is difficult. Providers can either disclose information or keep it to themselves. Despite this somewhat lack of transparency, it is safe to assume there are billions of dollars flowing through the different trading desks. Regardless of what may be the “current hot trend” in crypto, OTC traders will always try to buy in bulk if their situation allows or requires it. There is a good reason why OTC trading remains such a sought-after solution, even though DeFi is seemingly getting all of the attention lately. Primarily active on Ethereum's blockchain, DeFi - or decentralized finance - gives crypto holders options to put their assets to work and generate revenue. As such, many people would expect this to trigger a decrease in OTC trading, but that may not be the case after all. Not everyone in this industry is looking to chase the next pump. Additionally, not everyone thinks of Ethereum as a “financial facilitator” either. The vast majority of onlookers in this world have no idea DeFi even exists, or who it is supposed to matter. Those why engage in OTC trading are often leveraging long-term strategies, instead of having a pump-chasing attitude. Bitcoin and Ethereum will remain very prominent crypto assets in the industry. Not everyone is using these assets through fairly risky and mainly unaudited DeFi offerings. Instead, there are always those who hold these assets for a longer period of time. Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen a decent price increase throughout the past year, rising by 47.5% and 127.7% respectively. Given the recent rise in the number of companies buying Bitcoin as part of their investment portfolio, OTC trading is likely to keep increasing. These people are drawn to cryptocurrencies for a reason that has nothing to do with what crypto influencers want others to believe to be important. In its current shape, DeFi has no real use other than mere speculation, and comes with far too many risks to boot. During my research, I learned how the first OTC market was launched in 2014 by Circle. Since then, a cascade of new OTC providers has been  coming to market, ranging from Kraken to MXC Exchange and Grayscale to Cointral, to name just a few. In my opinion, it is safe to assume there will be even more competition in the OTC segment over the years to come. Institutional demand for cryptocurrency is on the rise globally, and these people buy in bulk. As competition emerges in OTC trading, several aspects become apparent. Clients want to use their preferred payment method and not worry too much about fees. A lot of platforms provide one or the other, but finding both under one roof remains difficult. Slowly but surely, this is changing with the help of crucial partnerships. Working together in the cryptocurrency industry will often have beneficial outcomes. Finding the right mix between innovation, convenience, and accessibility will be the key hurdle to overcome. Again, this has very little to do with DeFi, yield farming, or any other current “hot trend”.Those who trade OTC are the ones who make a bigger impact on the overall appeal of Bitcoin. While these traders are not moving the price in a visual manner, the quantities of BTC moving hands tell a tale of their own. DeFi Isn’t Ready for Institutional Interest In reality, the people flocking to DeFi are often small-scale cryptocurrency enthusiasts. They are people who already own Bitcoin or Ethereum, and look to earn a quick buck by any means necessary. In the past, these people would invest in altcoins, such as Litecoin, Monero, NEO, DigiByte, and others. Today, they are trying to find the next DeFi “unicorn” token in the hopes of securing phenomenal returns. This makes the DeFi crowd very different from the people who trade Bitcoin or Ethereum over-the-counter. Those people are not interested in whatever may be brewing behind the scenes, or terms that are clearly not sustainable in the long run. All they want is to diversify an existing - and oftentimes large - portfolio by obtaining Bitcoin first, and perhaps Ethereum if they have a larger risk appetite. DeFi is , in its current state, seemingly going through a period of stagnation. The total value locked in the industry has not risen much recently, and struggles to remain above $11 billion. Compared to the OTC market - which was estimated by a $220 billion industry in 2018 - that is small change. This is a further sign of how OTC traders aren’t showing an increasing interest in decentralized finance as of right now. Different Audiences are a Good Thing Rather than relying on smart contracts, OTC traders engage with a buyer or seller directly. Although some may opt for trading crypto-to-crypto, the vast majority is more likely to be fiat-to-crypto or crypto-to-fiat. The main draw of OTC trading is how one can buy and offload large amounts of cryptocurrency without influencing the market price directly. As Bitcoin’s momentum appears to be turning bullish again, there is likely to be an influx in OTC trading volume. For exchanges and other service providers in the industry, catering to the needs of as many different types of users is crucial. While DeFi may seem appealing, OTC trading is where companies can make a genuine impact. With the right partnerships in place, there is an interesting future ahead. Both DeFi and OTC can co-exist without issues, but they clearly target completely different audiences, at least for now.
