Learn more about my thoughts and opinions on computer vision and my journey in the tech industry via the interview below. 1. What do you do and why do you do it? (tell us your story) I’m the Co-Founder and CEO of DeWaste and we work on reducing food waste in all dining institutions. We realized that so much food gets wasted simply because food institution managers don’t know what their customers want and it’s too expensive to find out. We do this in a very affordable way using computer vision in an effort to reduce the amount of food that ends up in the trash. 2. Tell us more about the things you create/write/manage/build! DeWaste is a system that consists of a camera that automatically takes photos of food and then on the backend we analyze all of those photos to figure out what food is being thrown away. Then using this raw data, we come up with predictions on why this food is being thrown away and what can be done to reduce this food waste. 3. How did you end up on your current career path? Do you like it? This just sort of ended up falling into my lap as I was in the dining hall at UC Berkeley and saw so much food being wasted. I knew that I had to do something about it and tackled this problem at Cal Hacks with my cofounder. 4. What tech are you most excited or passionate about right now and why? I’m most excited about advances in computer vision because the accuracy of models is getting better every day. This makes our data analysis more and more accurate because we can be more confident in the suggestions that we are providing. 5. What tech are you most worried about right now and why? Privacy is a bigger and bigger concern every day. Personally I’m not as paranoid about all the reasons that most people are worried but the parts where personal data is used to purposefully racially divide our communities is very worrying. 6. If we gave you 10 million dollars to invest in something today, what would you invest in and why? If not DeWaste, I’d invest this into companies working on space travel. I think there is a lot left to explore in space and we really have no idea what’s out there. The possibilities once we know what’s out there are endless because the Earth is nothing but a speck in the grand scheme of the uni/multiverse. 7. What are you currently learning? I’m currently studying computer science and data science at UC Berkeley. Outside of class I spend my time learning about advances in computing and learning about the latest innovation in automotive tech. 8. What’s the best advice you’ve ever given someone? Be passionate about what you’re building. If you don’t care about the problem that you’re solving then you’ll never succeed. The passion in solving the problem is what will get you through the tough times because there will be tough times. 9. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Hardware is hard. Michael Seibel from Y Combinator told us this when we were building our own hardware and encouraged us to find a different way. This is when we repurposed cheap Android phones to be our cameras instead of trying to build a camera system using Raspberry Pis. On Food Waste and Relevance of Privacy: Noonies Nominee Paran Sonthalia

HackerNoon Reporter: Please tell us briefly about your background. I’m currently a rising senior at UC Berkeley studying computer science and data science. This summer, alongside working on DeWaste, I’m also interning at Citadel. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? DeWaste. We work on reducing food waste in dining institutions through an analysis of what food gets thrown away. Using this data, we help update the menus to better suit what customers like. What is the origin story? Pranshu and I were sitting in our university dining hall and just were not enjoying the food; we looked for somewhere to submit feedback and couldn’t find anything. Looking around everyone was throwing away their food and it hit us, if people throw away their food that generally means they didn’t like it. This led to our idea of analyzing the food thrown away to get better designed menus. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? It’s great that we both have very diverse skill sets and complement each other well. As students we’ve seen the problem of food waste firsthand and have the resources through our school to help solve it. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? We’d probably both be software engineers in finance companies. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? Our most important metric is how much food waste we’re able to reduce. Most importantly we look at how much food waste goes down during the time that we’ve been active at the location. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? We’ve got a lot of new customers in the last few months. And as we’re getting more customers, we’re starting to notice a ripple effect. What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? Computer vision has been getting way more reliable and this will make our food waste analysis significantly more accurate. The biggest worry has always been hardware and hardware failures; we hope that these controllers get more reliable over time. What drew you to get published on HackerNoon? What do you like most about our platform? Both of us have heard about HackerNoon a lot from our friends and that’s when we started reading about all sorts of new ideas and projects. 7 Common App Development Mistakes RetroCube Suggested That You Should Avoid

Can you recall Bill Gates’s comment saying that “if your business is not on the Internet, then your business will be out of business”? The same will soon be said about agriculture and the use of technologies in that industry. If you have never taken aerial photographs of your farm and water you crop by eye, you don’t have a farm. Of course, it does exist, but you don’t use even a third of its potential. Why So Adamant? On the one hand, the success of breeding and chemical industries has made it easier to engage in agriculture. But on the other hand, there are serious challenges coming from climate change and black swan events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the US-China trade war. This changes the rules of the game and calls out to you, “Hey, farmer! You have to have a large margin of safety. And you have to continuously improve your work efficiency.” Not everyone can afford to increase their earnings by expanding their fields or gardens. So, it’s not about how much land you have but how you use it. And it’s not about planting twice as much wheat on 10 square feet of land; it’s about making your farm smart. Innovative solutions allow you to automate some tasks, increase yields, cut costs, and boost profits. This is as important for a small family farm as it is for large farm groups or massive agro-industrial complexes. Sure, you can’t be prepared for certain events. In 2019, Midwest flooding devasted many crops. According to officials, damage exceeded $1.2 billion in Iowa alone, one of the three most affected states. But technology comes to the rescue even in cases like this and makes it possible to quickly assess the damage and receive proper insurance payments. The climate becomes less predictable in other parts of the United States and worldwide. Droughts, floods, and hurricanes severely affect yields and market prices of crops, sometimes leaving farmers without income. Now they need to preserve and increase the harvest even in less-than-favorable weather conditions to be able to sell profitably amid market shortage and rising prices. And excess allows farmers to grow other crops that will be more profitable to cultivate in the coming season. The price of corn futures in the United States has doubled – from $330 to almost $700 – since June 2020. But has it become easier to grow? And how can a farmer increase yields on a set piece of land without resorting to harmful chemicals or disrupting soil composition? Or how can they start growing new crops that are difficult to cultivate in the region but bring good profit? Farm owners and managers that are looking for improved yields, work efficiency, and earnings are starting to take advantage of UAVs more often. And these are not just beautiful aerial photos – there is a lot more to it. What You Can Monitor on a Farm with a Drone? Drone photography allows you to get information that no farmer could collect, no matter how attentive or experienced they are, if they simply walked around the fields. The Quantity and Quality of Green Mass Aerial photos or colored orthophoto maps help to control farming at all stages – from germination to harvesting. Essentially, it’s a single shot of your fields stitched together from thousands of drone shots. It has a great amount of detail, so it can be zoomed in to clearly show the seedling density, unseeded areas, plant color, etc. Orthophoto maps obtained with drones eliminate the need for extensive manual fieldwork or expensive shoots from a manned aircraft. This is important background information, the field model in a smartphone. A series of plans makes it possible to track real changes in crops within a certain timeframe both for the entire field and individual plants. Terrain Relief of the Fields By using conventional cameras or laser rangefinders, drones can create 3D maps of the terrain, even if the soil on the field is densely covered by plants. The resulting terrain models clearly show all the hills and lowlands and the general land slopes of the field fragments. Such maps help to plan sowing and irrigation more efficiently as well as carry out anti-erosion measures in time. Characteristics of Soil and Water Bodies While focusing on how the plants look, farmers sometimes fail to track changes in their field. But orthophoto maps made up of images in different spectral bands can provide information that is invisible on regular images. In contrast to a conventional camera or the human eye, a multispectral camera takes images in different spectra of light – particularly in the visible spectrum (RGB), infrared (NIR), near infra-red radiation edge, and each of the RGB channels (alternating). The latter is suitable for shooting objects made of different materials. Thus, shooting in the green channel makes it possible to visualize vegetative plant activity and its growth dynamics. The red channel, above all, provides information about the soil condition. A blue channel provides valuable information about conditions at the bottom of reservoirs, artificial and natural ponds, and lakes. Multispectral RGB data can also be visualized as combinations of strips of these three colors. Thus, you can see things that aren’t obvious: swampy soil, drainage problems, erosion, an outbreak of weeds, etc. These problems aren’t always visible during a pedestrian survey but often require a prompt solution. State of the Livestock Drones are excellent at observing living and moving objects. While searching for food, animals can go very far and even get lost in large, open pastures. Drones help control their movement, search for missing animals, assess green mass quality in the grazing area, and react to unforeseeable circumstances, such as injury or attempted theft, in time. Plant Health and Maturity Vegetation index maps tell us about plant health and maturity much more than simple photographs. Those are compiled based on data in various spectral bands. Each index has a color value corresponding to a certain norm. Anything that differs from the norm signifies a disease, drought, element deficiency, or poor plant growth – depending on which index is analyzed. The main indices that can be used for UAV-based mapping are: Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). It allows to measure plant photosynthetic activity and the relative volume of green biomass; Normalized difference red edge index (NDRE). It is used to analyze high-density perennial crops; Soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI). It allows to assess soil fertility; Optimized soil adjusted vegetation index (OSAVI). Let’s see how it works in a bit more detail. How to Assess Plant Health by Its Color, and Why Satellite Data Is Not Enough? The type of information a drone obtains can sometimes surprise even experienced farmers, who call it farming with a cheat sheet. That is because vegetation indices not only show if something is wrong with the plant but also accurately describe the problem: what exactly it’s lacking, what is in excess, and how serious the situation is. Vegetation indices are based on the spectral reflectance of plants and soil. In simple terms, if we take pictures in different regions of the light spectrum and alternate and combine the data, we can have a fairly accurate assessment of the content of water, nitrogen, carbon, pigments, etc., in plants. Healthy and unhealthy, mature and growing plants reflect light differently. The benefit of having vegetation index maps is that characteristics of development are noticeable in the early stages, unlike in ordinary images. Let’s take chlorophyll as an example Chlorophyll, the main compound in green plants, reflects green light well, so most plants look green to us. On the other hand, red light is absorbed by chlorophylls and used for photosynthesis. When the plant gets sick, it becomes worse at reflecting green light and absorbing red light. These changes are clearly visible when analyzing vegetation indices. Index maps can be used throughout the season – they provide specific, relevant information at different times. For instance, in the beginning, you can see how the plants survived the winter and how they manage the shift to warmer conditions. In the middle of the season, index maps show how the crops are developing and whether there are enough moisture and essential elements for growth. At the end of the season, you can see which parts of the field are already ready for harvesting and where the crop is not ripe yet. Plant diseases and soil problems can be identified at all times. Satellite Data Is Not Enough A combination of data from drones and satellites gives the optimal effect for monitoring fields. There are projects that offer monitoring through satellite imagery alone. This approach is valid, but it has multiple restrictions and neglects important opportunities. Satellite imagery is useful for working with very large fields as well as remote-controlled farms. But there are serious limitations: you are tied to the satellite schedule and may not be able to see the fields for months in cloudy weather. Plus, it is expensive and not always justifiably so. UAV can be effective for surveying farms, vineyards, and orchards of any size. Drones operate at low altitudes, so the clouds won’t be a problem. You can determine the schedule and flight duration. If necessary, you can fly the UAV daily. At the same time, data from satellites can provide a solid foundation for the following detailed survey of the field using drones. The quality of the survey varies dramatically, but satellite data is collected at regular intervals. Combining data and trend extrapolation based on regular satellite data is a good all-around approach for smart farming.

It gets better when you are a professional user who needs a reliable service to adapt to your increasing requirements. All US markets are covered (including OTC), as well as others such as Canada, India, UK, Euronext, Germany, Brazil, other European, Latin American, and Asian . exchanges This API also covers forex pairs, cryptocurrency, ETFs, funds data, and indices. Stock data, as well as alternative data, can be streamed using WebSocket that are useful for charting applications. An extensive collection of over 100 technical indicators is provided, making it a good suit for comprehensive technical analysis. The free tier provides up to 800 requests per day. Unlimited daily access to all data starts from $29.00 if paid monthly and $24.00 if paid annually. 2. Polygon.io Overall score: 4.65 Having its servers located inside the Equinix data center, the quality and reliability of Polygon's data for US markets are proven to be on the highest level. Data is updated in real-time at very low latency and can be compounded into custom intervals. Unfortunately, Polygon does not cover any international markets apart from the United States. However, some currencies and cryptos are supported in the separate plans. WebSocket feed can be either streamed delayed or real-time, depending on the subscription plan. There are no technical indicators supported, making it necessary to perform calculations on the client-side. Polygon will be the right choice for those who seek US exchange specific data and is willing to do a lot of additional code. The first premium package starts at $99 monthly, without yearly billing plans. 3. IEX Cloud Overall score: 4.58 IEX Cloud is a provider with the most extensive collection of data endpoints ranging from OHLC to SEC filings. The plan pricing calculation fee is obscure at first glance since all of the endpoints have different "weights," and you have to calculate in advance the anticipated usage. Overall the data quality is good, although only the US markets are covered. There is plenty of alternative data, including the forex and the crypto markets. However, it was devasted that no indices are included. Real-time streaming is supplied via Server Send Events (SSE) as an alternative to WebSocket. Many technical indicators are supported as well as necessary mathematical calculations. Apart from the starting plan, which is suitable for testing, the next tiers come at the cost of $19, $59, and $699 monthly, depending on the number of allocated messages. 4. Alpha Vantage Overall score: 4.01 Alpha Vantage used to be one of the first companies that appeared on the market after the Yahoo Finance API shutdown being a decent alternative for the users for a while. At the moment, their data quality seems to be fair, although they stopped providing real-time data for most of the essential stocks, e.g., AAPL. In the documentation, it is not mentioned that international markets are supported. However, if you type in the ticker symbol (perfectly matching Yahoo's format), you should be able to get it. Forex and cryptocurrencies are presented. At the moment, Alpha Vantage does not support WebSocket, and after contacting their support, they have confirmed that there are no plans to introduce it in the future. Fundamental technical indicators are supported. The prices begin at $29.99 monthly for 30 API requests per minute. 5. Intrinio Overall score: 3.97 Intrinio offers exchange specific data that might differ from the National Best Bid and Offer price (NBBO), which other data providers offer. Data could be accessed in real-time or be 15 min delayed, which comes at a significantly reduced fee. Initially, only the US data is covered. Upon individual request, access to international markets may be facilitated via third-parties. No crypto data is presented. However, it does have forex, fundamentals, and sec fillings. Several data feeds are streamable via WebSocket, such as TSX Level 1 data. However, it seems to be not the main specialization of Intrinio. A pretty decent collection of technical indicators is presented. Fees are calculated based on your use case and can quickly reach a couple of thousands. 6. Xignite Overall score: 3.86 This company primarily focuses on enterprise clients. A large number of data is provided directly from stock exchanges. Covers international stock markets, as well as ETFs, mutual funds, and indices. Xignite does not support forex or cryptos. Data could be streamed via SSE. Technical indicators are not presented. Prices are available upon request, and after consultation with a Xignite representative, could be in a range from thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. Conclusion Stock data providers on that list are curated and checked by industry professionals. They give you insides that otherwise would take months or even years. Your next move would be to choose the provider that does fulfill your usage intent and the budget. Most of the providers have free or trial access. Try them out. See what you need to improve your existing system or build a completely new one. Your success falls on you. Take that next step.

However, there's a slight difference in the way it introduced these two significant changes. Apple’s aim to go portless Though Apple didn't talk about it initially, with the launch of MagSafe, it is quite sure that the Cupertino-based tech giant is looking to make its device completely portless. And this isn't just for the iPhone line-up. The same can be noticed with MacBooks as well. Looking at its current inclusions and aligning them with , it is safe to say that Apple is envisioning to create a portless future with its products. But when? Apple’s vision Jon Prosser's tweet throws light towards the beginning of a new era. And the company will surely start this with iPhone, followed by iPad and Mac. Eventually, letting them all join Apple Watch 'lineage.' More than this, my concern is, will Apple continue with Qi charging, or it'll adopt RF wireless charging for better results? Though Qi charging is more popular, the question is mostly inspired by Apple's old habit of being distinct. And this should be one good reason to inspire its technocrats to explore scopes further. Getting back to where we started, if we go with current rumors running down the lane, and Apple will soon go portless with its devices, what will happen to all the adapters and charging cables present? While the brand claims to do this to prevent the environment and introduce sustainable growth, the question arises; Is Apple adding to eWaste? In 2018 alone, Apple sold more than 217 million iPhones (it stopped sharing figures after that). However, looking at its reports and the following growth, it managed to have undisputed space in the market by 2020. The reason behind talking figures is to predict the number of adapters, charging cables, and other related accessories with iPhone users. If Apple goes completely portless with its future releases, what will happen to all those devices and accessories available to date. A few significant concerns include: Let's for once suppose iPhone 13 comes completely portless and is entirely relying on MagSafe charging and AirPods. Under such a scenario, Apple's decision to remove the adapter with the launch of the iPhone 12 will be wholly justified. However, for those who are already having these adapters and charging cables, if they plan to buy a portless iPhone 13, they'll have to dump all those acquisitions. Won't that be eWaste? Current scenario: Another concern with people is, if Apple is genuinely envisioning to go for a portless future and ditch charging adapters and cables, what will happen to those who recently purchased iPhone 11 or iPhone SE, for that matter. While the two devices support MagSafe charging, they aren't designed like iPhone 12 line-up. Hence, people with older devices will be more dependent on wired changing for a better experience than wireless. Will Apple eventually stop creating and selling adapters and cables? Future availability: This is going to be the biggest challenge. For once, even if we consider that the transition from wired to wireless charging goes seamlessly, where will all the adapters and chargers go? Dumping the waste: Is Apple’s trade-in process strong enough to handle? Apple has its devices spread worldwide; however, the trade-in initiative (online) is currently flourishing in 98 countries and has 510 retail stores to support the program. But are they enough? Let’s talk about Daisy and Liam. Daisy can tear apart 200 iPhones in an hour and extract 14 minerals from the iPhone; Liam leaves no stone unturned to recycle hazardous waste. Each Liam line is home to 29 robots in 21 cells and can disassemble an iPhone in 11 just seconds. Adding it up, that makes more than 2 million iPhones every year. Researchers believe that these robots together can be the rolling shaft that will play an invincible role in pushing Apple's vision to go portless ahead. Challenges back every change. I won't say it will be smooth, but looking at Apple preparing itself, the transition won't be that difficult.
