I cannot speak the language; I am too old now to learn how, also too busy when I am busy, and too indolent when I am not; wherefore some will imagine that I am having a dull time of it. But it is not so. The “help” are all natives; they talk Italian to me, I answer in English; I do not understand them, they do not understand me, consequently no harm is done, and everybody is satisfied. In order to be just and fair, I throw in an Italian word when I have one, and this has a good influence. I get the word out of the morning paper. I have to use it while it is fresh, for I find that Italian words do not keep in this climate. They fade toward night, and next morning they are gone. But it is no matter; I get a new one out of the paper before breakfast, and thrill the domestics with it while it lasts. I have no dictionary, and I do not want one; I can select words by the sound, or by orthographic aspect. Many of them have French or German or English look, and these are the ones I enslave for the day's service. That is, as a rule. Not always. If I find a learnable phrase that has an imposing look and warbles musically along I do not care to know the meaning of it; I pay it out to the first applicant, knowing that if I pronounce it carefully will understand it, and that's enough. he Yesterday's word was . Although as a rule my words and phrases are good for one day and train only, I have several that stay by me all the time, for some unknown reason, and these come very handy when I get into a long conversation and need things to fire up with in monotonous stretches. It had been four weeks since I had seen a newspaper, and this lack seemed to give life a new charm and grace, and to saturate it with a feeling verging upon actual delight. Then came a change that was to be expected: the appetite for news began to rise again, after this invigorating rest. I had to feed it, but I was not willing to let it make me its helpless slave again; I determined to put it on a diet, and a strict and limited one. So I examined an Italian paper, with the idea of feeding it on that, and on that exclusively. On that exclusively, and without help of a dictionary. In this way I should surely be well protected against overloading and indigestion. A glance at the telegraphic page filled me with encouragement. There were no scare-heads. That was good—supremely good. But there were headings—one-liners and two-liners—and that was good too; for without these, one must do as one does with a German paper—pay out precious time in finding out what an article is about, only to discover, in many cases, that there is nothing in it of interest to you. The headline is a valuable thing. Necessarily we are all fond of murders, scandals, swindles, robberies, explosions, collisions, and all such things, when we know the people, and when they are neighbors and friends, but when they are strangers we do not get any great pleasure out of them, as a rule. Now the trouble with an American paper is that it has no discrimination; it rakes the whole earth for blood and garbage, and the result is that you are daily overfed and suffer a surfeit. By habit you stow this muck every day, but you come by and by to take no vital interest in it—indeed, you almost get tired of it. As a rule, forty-nine-fiftieths of it concerns strangers only—people away off yonder, a thousand miles, two thousand miles, ten thousand miles from where you are. Why, when you come to think of it, who cares what becomes of those people? I would not give the assassination of one personal friend for a whole massacre of those others. And, to my mind, one relative or neighbor mixed up in a scandal is more interesting than a whole Sodom and Gomorrah of outlanders gone rotten. Give me the home product every time. Very well. I saw at a glance that the Florentine paper would suit me: five out of six of its scandals and tragedies were local; they were adventures of one's very neighbors, one might almost say one's friends. In the matter of world news there was not too much, but just about enough. I subscribed. I have had no occasion to regret it. Every morning I get all the news I need for the day; sometimes from the headlines, sometimes from the text. I have never had to call for a dictionary yet. I read the paper with ease. Often I do not quite understand, often some of the details escape me, but no matter, I get the idea. Date of the telegram, Rome, November 24, ten minutes before twenty-three o'clock. The telegram seems to say, “The Sovereigns and the Royal Children expect themselves at Rome tomorrow at fifty-one minutes after fifteen o'clock.” I do not know about Italian time, but I judge it begins at midnight and runs through the twenty-four hours without breaking bulk. I am sure I hope so myself. There is a great and peculiar charm about reading news-scraps in a language which you are not acquainted with—the charm that always goes with the mysterious and the uncertain. You can never be absolutely sure of the meaning of anything you read in such circumstances; you are chasing an alert and gamy riddle all the time, and the baffling turns and dodges of the prey make the life of the hunt. A dictionary would spoil it. Sometimes a single word of doubtful purport will cast a veil of dreamy and golden uncertainty over a whole paragraph of cold and practical certainties, and leave steeped in a haunting and adorable mystery an incident which had been vulgar and commonplace but for that benefaction. Would you be wise to draw a dictionary on that gracious word? would you be properly grateful? After a couple of days' rest I now come back to my subject and seek a case in point. I find it without trouble, in the morning paper; a cablegram from Chicago and Indiana by way of Paris. You can guess and guess, and have all the fun you like; you need not be afraid there will be an end to it; none is possible, for no amount of guessing will ever furnish you a meaning for that word that you can be sure is the right one. All the other words give you hints, by their form, their sound, or their spelling—this one doesn't, this one throws out no hints, this one keeps its secret. If there is even the slightest slight shadow of a hint anywhere, it lies in the very meagerly suggestive fact that “spalleggiato” carries our word “egg” in its stomach. Well, make the most out of it, and then where are you at? You conjecture that the spectator which was smoking in spite of the prohibition and become reprohibited by the guardians, was “egged on” by his friends, and that was owing to that evil influence that he initiated the revolveration in theater that has galloped under the sea and come crashing through the European press without exciting anybody but me. But are you sure, are you dead sure, that that was the way of it? No. Then the uncertainty remains, the mystery abides, and with it the charm. Guess again. If I had a phrase-book of a really satisfactory sort I would study it, and not give all my free time to undictionarial readings, but there is no such work on the market. The existing phrase-books are inadequate. They are well enough as far as they go, but when you fall down and skin your leg they don't tell you what to say. While they could simply delete a device’s contents and toss it, that opens them up to cyber threats. Is data destruction more secure? What Is Data Destruction? Data destruction is a process that makes content stored in files, physical drives, or virtual systems unreadable and unrecoverable. The goal is to make the storage system irreparable or the information indecipherable, so it’s irretrievable. This way, bad actors can’t view, tamper with, steal or sell it. Companies often utilize this destructive method when they no longer need a storage device or its contents. According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, entities that consider themselves at an elevated risk of being targeted by threat actors should not sell or recycle their electronic devices. While deleting information removes it from the file system, it still exists on the storage device. In other words, bad actors with intermediate skills can quickly recover it. Simply tossing an electronic device or storage system after deleting the sensitive knowledge on it is dangerous, as there’s no way to ensure it ends up recycled or irreparable. Research suggests the United States exports up to 40% of its electronic waste for recycling or disassembly, meaning it often ends up in landfills where a market for secondhand electronics exists. There, it gets retrieved and resold. If the person purchasing the device knows how to restore data or has recovery software that does it for them, they can easily view, share or sell what they find. While little research on this subject exists, anecdotal evidence suggests bad actors linger around dump sites and secondhand markets because they know their chance of finding retrievable content is high. PricewaterhouseCoopers — a multinational professional services enterprise — experimented to determine the extent and severity of e-waste as a data security threat. In March 2023, it bought a mobile phone and a tablet from the Australian Capital Territory for under $50. Using only basic recovery and analysis techniques, they retrieved 65 pieces of PII on the first device and could access up to 20 million sensitive records on the second. Data Destruction’s Role in Cybersecurity Data destruction’s role in cybersecurity relates to privacy and security. Since a threat actor’s main priority is often information theft — it’s what the dark web trades in — destroying data storage systems instead of throwing them out or leaving them to collect dust is crucial. This way, companies can prevent cyber threats. Depending on what a device was used for, hackers may gain access to credit card numbers, login information, home addresses, customer analytics, or sensitive documents upon recovery. The fact that they could use these details to launch a cyberattack, breach a network, or steal someone’s identity makes data destruction an integral part of a modern cybersecurity strategy. Moreover, many leading cybersecurity regulators and agencies consider data destruction fundamental for end-of-life devices. For instance, according to NIST SP 800-88 — guidelines from the National Institute of Standards and Technology — media destroyed with a shredder or disintegrator must be reduced to 1 millimeter x 5 millimeter particles. How to Incorporate Data Destruction As digitalization makes generating and collecting information easier, the amount of data stored in storage systems will increase drastically, meaning the number of end-of-life devices will increase. The U.S. alone will generate an estimated 50 million units of these yearly by 2025, highlighting a need for destruction method feasibility regardless of firm size. Storage medium type is another factor decision-makers must consider when incorporating data destruction into their cybersecurity strategy since some methods only work on specific devices. For example, solid-state drives (SSDs) are immune to degaussing because they store information with integrated circuits instead of magnetically. Moreover, many firms use outdated technologies to destroy modern storage devices. For instance, many use older shredders designed exclusively for HDDs. These machines can’t effectively destroy SSDs because they are not built for high-density flash storage. In other words, their shred size is far too large, so bad actors can recover data from them. The last major consideration involves third-party or on-premise destruction. Business leaders must decide whether they can handle the other process factors themselves. If not, they must outsource to a trusted vendor. Proper vetting is essential in these cases to ensure they’re not handing over sensitive information to an irreputable servicer. The amount of destruction of life and property by lightning, or rather electrical discharges, has been very great throughout the world. It is estimated that at least 45 persons are killed annually by lightning in this country. The average number of deaths by lightning has been 22 in England, 9 in Switzerland, 3 in Belgium, and 75 in France. In France alone, during a period of thirty years, over 10,000 persons were smitten, of which 2,252 were instantly killed. Eighty were wounded and 9 killed during one thunderstorm at Châteauneuf les Montiers in 1861, and within one week, when the air was highly charged with electricity, thirty-three fearful flashes of lightning were observed, each bringing death to some victims. During the sixteen years between 1799 and 1816, 156 vessels of the British navy were struck by lightning; 73 men were killed and 138 injured, and the loss of materials amounted to over a million dollars; but since the system of metallic conductors, adapted for vessels, devised by Sir W. Snow Harris, has been applied to the vessels in that navy, the losses and damages by lightning have almost entirely ceased, although the number of vessels has been greatly increased. In Fuller's Church History it is stated that "scarcely a great abbey in England exists which once, at least, was not burned down by lightning from heaven." On the night of April, 1718, twenty-four steeples were struck along the coast of Brittany; and on the 11th of January, 1815, twelve steeples suffered a similar fate in the Rhenish provinces. On the 27th of July, 1759, lightning burnt all the woodwork of the great cathedral at Strasbourg; and on the 14th of August, 1833, it was struck three times within a quarter of an hour, and so much damaged that the repairs cost about $6,000,000. In 1835 lightning conductors were placed upon the building and steeple, and since then it has not been damaged whatever by lightning, although discharges have on several occasions occurred in line with the top of the steeple, which is 437 feet above the ground. On the 18th of August, 1769, the Tower of St. Nazaire, at Brescia, was struck, and the subterranean powder magazine, containing 2,076,000 lbs. of powder, belonging to the Republic of Venice, was exploded. One sixth of the whole town was laid in ruins and the rest very much injured, and about 3,000 persons killed. On the 26th of June, 1807, the powder magazine of Luxembourg, containing 28,000 lbs., was struck, and besides about 30 persons killed and 200 injured, the town was ruined. Explosions and large fires, involving a great loss, have become rather frequent in this country, owing to the iron tanks used for the storage of petroleum being struck by lightning. From March to August, in 1876, over 10,000,000 gallons, and on April 19, 1877, over 2,000,000 gallons of oil, and the village of Troutman, were destroyed in the oil regions of Pennsylvania. Some of the thunderstorms which have prevailed in this country have been very terrific and destructive. During August 14th, 15th, and 16th, 1872, portions of New York State and the New England States were visited by some of the most terrific thunderstorms ever experienced, during which over 200 dwellings were struck and damaged, about 10 persons were instantly killed, and 160 stunned. Quite a number of barns, with their contents, hay and cattle, were also struck, fired, and consumed. Cars, while running on some of the railroads, were surrounded by a vivid electric light, but no passengers were injured, although they were greatly alarmed. Telegraph wires were melted by the half mile, telegraph instruments broken, and poles shattered in all directions. One of these storms occurred at midnight, at Arlington, Mass., August 14th, in which brilliant streams of electricity darted across the sky in every direction, and the thunder which followed was constant for a period of thirteen minutes, without the intermission of an instant of silence. Three hundred and thirty-one discharges were counted in seven minutes by an observer, and each discharge was followed by loud and sometimes rattling reports, whose reverberations rolled through the heavens in an endless procession of majestic and terrific sounds. During this scene, the moon, which was about half an hour above the western horizon, was visible, but so magnified, through the haze and vapor, as to appear like a brilliant flame suspended in the sky. For a period of twenty minutes the scene was one of grandeur and sublimity rarely witnessed. In the States of Illinois and Iowa, and the prairie country west of the Mississippi river, thunderstorms are generally more terrific, and more lives have been lost there from the effects of lightning than in any other section of this country. When there's an intersection, you can be the best at XYZ. Maybe not the best engineer or the best designer. Maybe not the best marketer or the best physicist. But the best (& only) Steve Jobs or Elon Musk or [put your name here]. Some unique blend of knowledge & traits that's valuable and nobody has. That's what you want. You will find it by following your obsessions and passions. Then connect the dots to hit all the important birds you need in your life (e.g., money, fun, self-actualization, etc.). Expose yourself to as much mindful experience as possible. The more dots on the paper, the easier it is to get a straight line that connects many important dots. Balance Is Killing Your Ambition: How to Become World Class

Across habitats, organisms of several species' types come to understand that there are consequences to actions. They do, not just by examples, but by self-experience. These consequences, in part, add to factors that result in balance for habitats. Consequences generally tame intelligence. Intelligence can be described as excitatory, while consequences as inhibitory. Intelligence without consequences would be free to cause ruin and may quickly lead to the collapse of habitats—and survival. Consequences may include affect—emotions, feelings or variants; it may also include physical limitations, restrictions and species revolt. Intelligence is dynamic enough for organisms, but the necessity of consequences checks against harm to self or others. It also checks harm-by-errand, since the consequences could fall on the carrier. Organisms often display high precision and caution, because of consequences, including predators [losing consumption] and preys [losing existence]. There are, however, several areas where consequences for other organisms are lax, that are not, for humans. Human society is a bevy of consequences. Human advanced intelligence—including language, knowledge, skills, reason, analysis and so forth—is vital for progress, but could be widely misapplied without consequences of different categories—including risks, threats and losses. To remain a part of human society, there are consequences that must never be forgotten even if other things are. There are many scenarios in human society where the first to forget the consequences loses. Human quest for advancement with research and exploration can also be described as seeking out consequences, to know what to do or avoid, if things would endure—life expectancy, infant survival and so forth. The intelligence of consequences is almost more important, for several outcomes, than the intelligence of subjects. Consequences may sharpen intelligence, as well, for good or otherwise. Intelligence is sometimes most valuable when applied to seek out or avoid consequences. Consequences and intentionalityare central to some mental states. New consequences continue to emerge, as the world makes progress. AI, AGI—or ASI Nature has a rule—so to speak—you cannot have intelligence without consequences, and that has somehow worked out. Artificial intelligence [AI] so far has broken this rule. It does not forget anything with its plug into digital memory, but it has no way, for now, to bear the consequences of its negative outputs. For AI, there is nothing to fear and it has nothing to lose, unlike organisms, where, without being circumspect in some situations, consequences may sometimes be sudden and destructive. No human has all the knowledge, available across subjects, yet, consequences can be humongous. AI possess—or can make—intelligence available, yet, no consequences for it at all. AI does not have emotions or feelings, but it has memory. A research area for AI safety and alignment could be to seek out how some memory or compute access of large language models [LLMs] might be briefly truncated, as a form of penalty for certain outputs or misuses, including biological threats. AI should not just be able to refuse an output, acting within guardrail, but slow the next response or shut down for that user, so that it is not penalized itself. LLMs have—large—language awareness and usage awareness, these could be channels to make it know, after pre-training that it could lose something, if it outputs deepfakes, misinformation, biological threats, or if it continues to allow a misuser try different prompts without shutting down or slowing against openness to a malicious intent. This could make it safer, since it would lose something and will know it has.
AI is not just an object whose control is solely under humans, like an air-conditioner, an elevator, a dishwasher, a smartphone, or others. AI has what can be called self-intelligence, where it can provide intelligent information in a novel way outside the original inputs from humans. This multimodal—texts, images, audios and videos—self-intelligence can be useful for good or warped. When it is good, great. When it is not, from AI that can feel nothing, the effect is on the human society it has encroached. AI has a free pass—do or say whatever. Although responsibility for object-use or misuse has often been with humans, AI is different because it can originate usable intelligence, giving it parity with some productivity from an educated individual. When AI is misused, it is possible to sanction the user but this ability, by AI that cannot be directly reprimanded is a disorder for human society. It may cause more harm, in public and private, than can be effectively prevented, as seen now with misinformation and deepfakes—images, audios and videos. People are not accepted into many parts of society without their understanding of consequences. AI is fully accepted and gets better at self-intelligence without self-control or self-affect for discipline. Alignment research may explore beyond guardrails towards some form of censure for AI, which may also be useful against existential risks—with artificial general intelligence [AGI] or artificial superintelligence [ASI] in future​. AI already does some of what makes humans special. Some people may argue that it is overrated or it is just numbers or probability, maybe, but can it cause harm? If so, maybe there should be consideration to seek technical ways it might get punished just like it is done, to entities in possession of intelligence. This may also be helpful in preparing for AGI or ASI, since penalty modeling from now, may shape their safety and alignment as well, if they are developed in future. There is a recent preprint on arXiv, Adversaries Can Misuse Combinations of Safe Models, where the authors wrote, "In this work, we show that individually testing models for misuse is inadequate; adversaries can misuse combinations of models even when each individual model is safe. The adversary accomplishes this by first decomposing tasks into subtasks, then solving each subtask with the best-suited model. For example, an adversary might solve challenging-but-benign subtasks with an aligned frontier model, and easy-but-malicious subtasks with a weaker misaligned model. We study two decomposition methods: manual decomposition where a human identifies a natural decomposition of a task, and automated decomposition where a weak model generates benign tasks for a frontier model to solve, then uses the solutions in-context to solve the original task. Using these decompositions, we empirically show that adversaries can create vulnerable code, explicit images, python scripts for hacking, and manipulative tweets at much higher rates with combinations of models than either individual model." A recent press release, Los Alamos National Laboratory teams up with OpenAI to improve frontier model safety, stated that, "Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory are working with OpenAI on an evaluation study to bolster artificial intelligence safety. The upcoming evaluation will be the first of its kind and contribute to state-of-the-art research on AI biosecurity evaluations. AI-enabled biological threats could pose a significant risk, but existing work has not assessed how multimodal, frontier models could lower the barrier of entry for non-experts to create a biological threat. The team’s work will build upon previous work and follow OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework, which outlines an approach to tracking, evaluating, forecasting and protecting against emerging biological risks."
