For example, we look at the user’s historical request characteristics and responses from the chatbot, as well as the chatbot’s response characteristics.” Why can’t regular IT teams handle these attacks? When speaking to Scanta CEO Chaitanya Hiremath, I asked him why companies with their own IT teams would bother outsourcing machine learning security services. Couldn’t those IT teams incorporate ML security protocols on their own? “We’ve spoken to many companies and I was quite surprised to learn that these ML threats are something that most people are unaware of,” says Hiremath. “The reality is many people don’t even know that this is something they have to protect against.” “Most IT teams and security solutions offer things like network security and web application firewalls. This type of security is different from what Scanta provides. What we are talking about and introducing is on a different level. It goes far beyond removing bias from training data.” In the Delta Airlines example mentioned previously, someone hacked their chatbot and modified the source code. This hack gave them access to private customer data. “This is because no one was monitoring what was going into the chatbot and what was coming out,” says Hiremath. “This is the result of the way machine learning technologies are built these days. However, it is imperative to have a mechanism that can interpret if there is any malicious intent. We call this system a zero trust framework. You have to make sure that all aspects are protected. This is just as important as protecting your database or network.” Our daily lives and our personal data are becoming more and more intertwined with computer systems. The increasing digitization of modern society makes heightened data security a top priority. Particularly with the data laws brought out by organizations like the GDPR, it is more important than ever that companies protect their private data and their client’s data at every level. How to Protect Chatbots from Machine Learning Attacks

Every minute, a staggering 1,820 terabytes of data is created around the world. That’s more than every day! 2.5 quintillion bytes This data takes many forms, from Tweets and Instagram posts to the generation of new bitcoin. But how is data being used in our workplaces? And how is automation transforming the way we process it? Data automation has emerged as one of the most pivotal workplace trends in recent years. From manufacturers using on the factory floor, to HR departments automating employee payrolls in offices, automation is making it easier for us to collect, analyse, and make sense of the data we need to do our jobs. OEE systems to track production Data Automation Increases Accuracy Most of us will have no trouble remembering a recent high-profile network outage. From TSB’s infamous online banking disaster in 2018 – which cost the company £330 million in lost custom and compensation – to Delta Airlines six-hour outage in 2016, it’s clear that problems with data processing can be responsible for shattering a company’s reputation. Although such incidents almost always spark concerns that cybercrime is on the rise, both TSB and Delta admitted the true cause of their issue was something altogether less sinister (though no less alarming): human error. In fact, it’s been estimated that manual data entry has an average error rate of 1%. These mistakes can be as simple as typing a single wrong letter into a line of code – but even the smallest of errors can have catastrophic results. The good news is that automation can substantially reduce this error rate. In 2009, a study by the University of Las Vegas, Nevada, proved this by asking over 200 students to process six different types of data on 30 data sheets. On average, the students made 10.23 errors overall – but this figure dropped to 0.38 when the sheets were automatically checked by an automated system. Data Automation Increases Efficiency Today’s businesses store hundreds of different types of data – from employee payroll accounts and customer details, to stock levels, the success of production lines, and the conversion rates of their latest digital marketing campaigns. Without automation, many workplaces would need to hire additional talent just to manage these vast data sets – and that in itself would require a lot more data to be processed. Thankfully, automation enables human workers to set up processes without having to spend lots of time repeating the same actions over and over again. Because automated systems are, by nature, highly attuned to patterns, they’re also incredibly effective when it comes to monitoring unusual behaviour. Whether it’s drops in production levels or strange cyber activity, these systems ensure that we can visualize –and investigate – even the smallest fluctuations as soon as possible. And as TSB knows only too well, the costs of catching an error just slightly too late can damage a business for years to come. As the business world becomes increasingly reliant on data in all its forms, automation is something no workplace can afford to ignore. How Is Data Automation Transforming The Workplace?

When considering where to launch their startup, many entrepreneurs naturally think of the “Innovation Hubs” of Boston, the San Francisco Bay Area, and New York City. After all, that is where the deals are, right? Well, they’re not the only places where companies are being launched and receiving game-changing investments. Each year, our firm publishes The State of Startups (SM) in the Southeast report which delivers a comprehensive overview of the venture capital and startup ecosystem in the southeastern United States. This year’s report once again shows the Southeast to be an attractive place to invest in startups relative to the more established and capital-intensive Innovation Hubs. Furthermore, our 2019 report reveals that the overall rate of maturation of the venture ecosystem in the Southeast is exceeding that of the Innovation Hubs, with more dollars than ever being invested in early and growth-stage southeastern companies. While most large and established growth equity funds are already investing in the region, we’re also seeing more capital being deployed by Southeast-based investors. In 2018, 25 percent of the top five most active VCs in each of the nine southeastern states the report examined were from the Innovation Hubs. In this year’s report, that number has fallen to 18 percent. Local funds are getting larger and, therefore, have a bigger market presence in the region. Regardless, if your company is successful, venture capital abounds. In fact, the aggregate revenue multiple for deals done in the Southeast since 2014 has grown 40 percent over the same analysis done last year. But access to funding isn’t the only reason why the Southeast is a great place to start a business: No matter how innovative your product or service is, companies must attract and retain top talent to be successful. Strong university systems that can provide the human resources your startup needs are located throughout the Southeast, from the University of North Carolina and Vanderbilt University to the University of South Carolina, Georgia Tech, the University of Georgia and many, many more. Ready Talent Pool. The Southeast offers a , especially when compared with large cities in the northeast and California. This is true not only as it relates to housing, goods, and taxes, but also for the cost of doing business as well. The Southeast tends to offer greater affordability in terms of commercial real estate leasing and the cost of acquiring talent, for instance. Located in Atlanta, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is a global gateway offering nonstop service to more than 150 domestic and 70 international destinations, including major commercial centers in Europe, Asia, and South and Central America. Even if your business isn’t located in Atlanta, you can still drive there from many other southeastern cities in just a few hours to catch a direct business flight. A lot of things are required for fostering new businesses, including factors we’ve already discussed like access to talent and the availability of capital. Research universities, such as those in the Research Triangle, technology incubators, and accelerators are also important contributors to a vibrant startup ecosystem. The Atlanta Technology Development Center at Georgia Tech is a good example of the latter, although robust ones exist in most all of the nine southeastern states our report examined. Lower Cost of Living. lower cost of living Easy Access to Anywhere. Vibrant Ecosystem. Other contributing factors include startup-friendly civic and state governments which often provide free marketing assistance, help entrepreneurs make connections, and offer tax breaks. These things are harder to get in the more established Innovation Hubs where there are so many businesses being built. Lots of Fortune 500 corporations were “born and raised” in the Southeast—think The Home Depot, Delta Airlines, The Coca-Cola Company, UPS, FedEx, and more. The region also has its share of “unicorns,” which are privately-owned companies that have reached a valuation of $1 billion or greater, including such names as Epic Games, JetSmarter, Magic Leap, SmileDirectClub, and others. You’ll Be in Good Company. It’s clear the Southeast is increasingly being recognized as a great environment for entrepreneurs in the early stages of building a business. The bottom line: Don’t overlook the region. Overall, 8,383 investments totaling $28 billion have been made in southeastern startups since 2014. Why the Southeast Is a Great Place to Launch a Startup

I’m a couple of weeks behind on reading and processing this on “ ” a long article that offers up an explanation for why those of us living in the Millennial Generation often fail to complete tedious, but important adult-like tasks such as doing our chores and paying our bills. article The Burnout Generation, The author suggests that it’s burnout — a plague of workaholism that’s somehow affected everyone between the ages of 22–38 year olds living in America today. But I’d like to propose a counter-argument to the theory: It’s not burnout, it’s simply a byproduct of our “instant gratification” cultural mindset. When I read the first paragraph about how a guy didn’t end up voting in an election because he missed the registration deadline, I burst out laughing and texted my husband: << OMG this is too real. >> Back in November, I had a 7 a.m. flight scheduled on the day of the New York primaries. And even Tweeting about how amazing it was that Delta Airlines emailed me a reminder to register for my absentee ballot, I completely failed to do so under the prescribed deadline. despite In NYC, the polls open at 6 a.m. I knew I’d never make it in time. So I did what any rational person would do: I changed my flight to 8 a.m., arrived at the polls at 5:55 a.m., and as I pulled the, card to cut the lines. ended up pissing off about 30 people “But I have a flight to catch!” But, do I blame as the reason why I failed to do the requisite paperwork under the appropriate deadline? I mean…not really. Even while under situations of severe duress and stress, I somehow manage to do things like: prepare presentations and speeches, write on this blog, and take a cross-country redeye fresh off the heels of one event to walk into the doors and host another one. burnout My take is that this article isn’t about burnout at all — it’s about how years of growing up in an age of “sharing out” online has literally rewired our brains to choose activities that get us more quickly to that “instant gratification” high we crave. dopamine Reprioritizing my life Here’s a short list of things I’ve failed to do this week: Buy more shampoo & conditioner Reply to my mom about a family vacation in July Complete my expense report from the last two months of 2018 Process my healthcare claims from the same period of time Mail a piece of artwork to my brother And yet, somehow, I’ve managed to do all of these things: Organize two mid-size executive events at work Participate in two non-profit board calls See a Broadway show Blog every day I wouldn’t say I’m feeling particularly “stressed” or “burned out.” But it’s pretty clear where there’s a higher sense of “instant reward” or gratification in my second list of events. …so I’m incentivized to participate in real-time events where I get the instant positive feedback. I like it when people think I do a good job at work …so I’m incentivized to participate in meetings with larger-scale impact around issues that matter to me. I like the feeling of contributing to things I care about …so I’m incentivized to attend a highly-acclaimed production so I can talk about it with friends later. I like being on the cultural pulse of NYC theatre …so I’m incentivized to blog regularly in order to get that feel-good rush. I like the feeling I get after writing something for the world Let’s not kid ourselves: The activities where I choose to spend my time are much higher impact and carry much higher “social validation” than those I fail to do. The “always on” generation What’s the rush I get out of making sure I have enough shampoo in the morning? Eh. Not worth it. I’d rather just go a couple of days without conditioner rather than switch up my evening schedule to swing by a Duane Reade, then cart around a heavy bag with me all night long. Is this lazy? Is this selfish? Is it living in the clouds? Maybe. But here’s the thing: In addition to being a byproduct of the “always on” generation, we’re also dead-set on the, “isn’t there an app for that?” philosophy. In the midst of my short 31 years, I’ve seen dozens of examples where things that *used* to be a pain now have automated, seamless solutions. Such as: How you get groceries (I used to have to go to the store) How you get phone calls (I used to have to wait at home for the phone to ring) How you get information (I used to have to use a dictionary or encyclopedia) How you get food delivered (I used to have to keep takeout menus and call) How you watch movies at home (I used to have to go to Blockbuster) How you watch TV (I used to have to remember what time a show was on TV) How you keep in touch with friends (I used to have penpals and send physical letters) This list goes on and on and on. And yes, while my parents experienced all of these same changes, they weren’t taking place during their formative years of growing up. I’m no psychologist or behavioralist, but I have to imagine something important happens when a Google search engine interface first appears in your late middle school years and suddenly makes the way you do all of your coursework in college that much easier. also Our parents matured in a time before cell phones and personal computers. Kids born today are born not knowing anything else. But my generated matured with the Internet. And you wonder why all expect “transformation” and “disruption” out of all of the other services and stale processes we see around us. It makes perfect sense to me; we’ve seen it happen dozens of times before. We know it’s only a matter of time for everything to be optimized, automated, done at scale. My “reward” for completing any of the tasks on my first list is so much smaller compared to the “reward” I get on my second list. So I’ll prioritize list #2 every time. Here’s something I actually thought recently: “Wow, all of my friends are having babies. It just feels like…so much work to put into raising one human. At the very least, if I’m going to have a baby, I’d at least want to have twins so I can get a two-for-one out of the amount of effort I put into it.” You know your cultural and generational mindset has overstepped when you start questioning the value or impact of doing the one thing all humans are designed to do: reproduce. I’m not saying it’s healthy. I’m not saying it’s good. All I’m saying is — it’s not burnout. We’re just children of the Internet age. Bring on the dopamine. The fact that airlines function at all is incredible for those who know how they work. Airlines are hubs of communication in a way, as they are involved with maintenance, security, reservation details, baggage, flight delays, passenger logistics, and cancellations. They track baggage, travel arrangements, as well as passenger loyalty points. Distributors and tourist agencies, for instance, need to track airline details, too, and if information goes afoul, travelers and airlines can lose hundreds to millions of dollars, at best. At worst, cracks in data protection can lead to a disaster. Luckily, blockchain technology (with its transparent ledger and smart contracts) shows potential in helping each of these different layers of communication know exactly what’s going on moment to moment. It can collaboratively update important information, keep airline and passenger data secure, contract ticket conditions for smooth flow, and refund money if any of the conditions are broken. The Problems Airlines have several problems, foremost of which is that there is no single source of truth about flight data, and the data that does exist is not easily accessible by all parties. This is known as the “flight data problem.” While there are many cases of airlines and airports collaborating to share flight data, this data still resides in separate silos. The result is that when there are flight delays, passenger apps, airport flight information display systems, airline websites, their telephone reservation systems and agents give contradictory information. This may result in a loss to the airline’s reputation, the loss of time and money for that airline, travellers, and stakeholders, and it can result in costly litigations. USA Today, for instance, the database website masFlight.com and highlighted that cancelled flights cost airlines, stranded passengers, and corporate companies millions of dollars. cited The existence of fractured, centralized information also leads to other problems, like websites shutting down or becoming hacked, airlines unable to track their maintenance needs, and the struggle to track passengers and baggage. That’s where the blockchain comes in with its developing technology that’s slanted to help airlines improve customer experience and safety. Blockchain solutions: For the airline With 3.8 billion air travelers in 2016, as well as air travel projected to double over the next 19 years, the airline industry has its work cut out for them. They need to provide maximum security and safety, show responsiveness and care, display efficacy, and communicate with their stakeholders and travelers in a timely manner. according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), And it’s with the following areas where the blockchain is about to take off: Ticketing — Most airlines provide the option of e-tickets in order to smooth over the passenger’s flight. E-tickets are, in essence, the customer’s travel details that are stored in and retrieved from a massive database. Even when tracking passengers on a single flight, each airline has to, at the bare minimum, keep track of when a passenger has checked in for their flights, when their tickets are scanned as they board, and where their bags are in reference to their final destination. Airlines do not want another PR disaster like where a man was forcefully dragged from an overbooked United flight in Chicago. Once the decentralized ledger achieves the same data speed as centralized websites, the blockchain can use its unique qualities of transparency and collaborativeness to prevent overbooking and revenue loss. United’s Dr. Dao incident, Cancelled or delayed flights — Airlines have to notify passengers of scheduled changes at least 14 days before they occur, otherwise passengers receive compensation or a refund. Recently, for flight delays. Understandably, the airlines were none too pleased, but , aside from which flight data resides in different silos (folders, categories, different IT processes or systems) so travelers tend to receive contradictory information. In time, the blockchain could present this single point of truth, with stakeholders providing up-to-date and verified information that saves airlines both money and stress. India proposed higher compensation they are not always able to know or prevent changes in time Maintenance — In 2017, the blockchain as a digital ledger shared by airlines, MRO teams, and OEMs to record flight events, operation conditions, and scheduled aircraft maintenance checks. In May 2018, the digital security company and found that only six scored a perfect ranking. Most airlines, including Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines, achieved an average rating. Data protection in today’s insecure world cannot be understated. Blockchain technology with its high resilience to hacking can provide a far less risky method of storing and sharing information through the use of authorized access requirements. Blockchain technology short-circuits some of these fees by bringing other players into the field and eliminating third-party intervention. Cost Since data resides on different silos, passengers tend to get conflicting information on their flights. The ledger, however, works through smart contracts where not only do different organizations share control of the data, but they also implement an approved and shared set of business rules through smart contracts. This gives the data credibility, since it makes errors far less likely to occur. Blockchain Services for Airlines The three blockchain platforms for airlines are , and . Further Network, Fizzy Winding Tree Further Network Further Network is launching a decentralized billing, settlement, and payment (BSP) model for safer and more convenient traveling, as well as other options to meet all travel needs. It achieves these developments through its smart contracts (called Smart Travel Records [STR]) and its digital currency, Aton. Further’s innovations help airline industries improve their services, visibility, and profitability. Airline are barely able to function, let alone innovate, with their 2.5%-5% profit margins. Further accomplishes this by removing third parties and by accomplishing uninterrupted, real-time P2P communication. Further offers airlines and travelers the following: 1. The decentralized billing, settlement, payment (BSP) process: Further Network helps airlines reduce operational costs (by eliminating third parties), so airlines can focus on customer-centric experiences, consequently increasing their profits. 2. Passenger wallet with biometric ID: Further gives users an Individual Customer Wallet for managing their travel assets and Aton transactions. Also adds the biometric identification to their wallets to help improve the “customer’s journey” by reducing the multiple ID data points into a single point that is under control of the traveler. 3. P2P Travel Product Distribution: Since the International Air Transport Association (IATA) serves as a liaison between airlines and travel agencies, non-IATA airlines lack visibility. Further’s blockchain not only helps such airlines promote themselves, but they also help these companies transmit their inventory over the distributed ledger. 4. Fizzy’s smart contracts are connected to global air traffic databases, so passenger compensation is automatic. Customers do not need to file claims and the smart contract minimizes discrepancies between the insurance company and customers. For now, payouts are issued in fiat currencies, although AXA aims to eventually use Ether. Fizzy, too, only covers US transatlantic flights and Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. By the end of 2018, it plans to cover the rest of the world. Winding Tree Winding Tree uses the Ethereum network as a decentralized travel platform that minimizes transaction costs between suppliers and end users, including hotels. Winding Tree levels the field by allowing travelers unmediated interactions with all distributors, not just those who monopolize the industry, so that travelers can get the lowest costs. Since the blockchain is transparent, participants can also follow what’s going on. The platform uses an ERC20 token, Lif. Other benefits include the following: Suppliers distribute inventory directly to points of sale, skipping costly intermediaries and bottlenecks. Sellers access inventory from all suppliers from a single platform with no markup fees and no barriers to entry. Travelers use Lif to directly pay for travel needs. The result? Air travel and airline operations becomes cheaper, smoother, and more reliable for all parties and the airline industry becomes more democratic. , are three of many airlines that use Winding Tree. Air New Zealand Swiss Air, and Lufthansa Conclusion Blockchain technology for the airline industry is a perfect match. Multiple actors depend on timely, coherent, consistent, and thoroughly accurate data for not only making and implementing plans but also for sharing traveler and operation information, among other aspects. At the moment, airlines have a problem with communication discrepancy resulting in impaired airline reputation, costly litigations, and the loss of time and money for the airline, travellers, and stakeholders. The blockchain technology can help solve this problem with its transparent, distributed ledger that is both permanent and secure.
