So, what’s one thing that the iOS platform, the Java programming language, and the .NET all offer developers? SDKs, of course. So, this practice of offering a developer toolkit has been around for a while given that each platform in question has its own technologies, processes, and nuances to keep in mind. Clearly, no two platforms are the same, so building applications for such platforms wouldn’t be either. Speaking of which, there are a number of Web3 SDKs available for developers too, even if the technologies involving blockchain development are a long way from being considered mature. But before we broach this topic, let’s get down to basics and learn all that we can about SDKs. SDKs Explained Otherwise known as software development kits, these toolboxes have been built from scratch for developers who wish to build applications for said platform. For the most part, an SDK will contain a compiler, debugger, and necessary APIs but there are other components that might be included namely: libraries, dev-related documentation, IDEs or code editors, testing tools, and necessary code samples that can help budding developers understand the coding tasks necessary to build proper applications. So, instead of building applications from scratch, developers, with a well-designed SDK, can speed up their development process and add much more functionality to their applications than would be possible otherwise. Speaking of which, let’s address how potentially beneficial it is for organizations to build and offer SDKs to developers next. 3 Benefits of SDKs Just because a developer can write all the code for an application, that doesn’t mean that this is necessary. There are a number of standard tasks that are considered repetitive and boring but can be avoided if developers used the right SDK for the job. Moreover, with the added capabilities that SDKs offer, one can really take their application to the next level. At first glance, these look like important benefits associated with using an SDK. Here are 3 other benefits of using SDKs in development: Rapid Integration & Deployment With most capabilities and code available in the SDK, developers do not have much work apart from integrating the right functionality and making the right modifications for the results that are right for their project. Error-checking capabilities offered by SDKs can help maintain app stability. Without a doubt, an SDK contributes to error-free rapid integration and deployment as a result. Time and Cost Efficiency If developers can do away with repetitive tasks while being able to add new features, thanks to pre-built features that come with SDKs, a good amount of time and money can be saved. Developers can focus more on fine-tuning the application rather than testing and refactoring the code. On the whole, the faster the application is built, the sooner it can be released for use by the public and which makes a positive impact on ROI. Control & Customization SDKs give developers adequate control and customization over what they’re building. Especially when it comes to staying in control of elements in the application that interact with other programs. Gelato Network Gelato is currently the largest decentralized protocol used by projects such as MakerDAO, Optimism or Yearn Finance to automate their smart contract executions across all (EVM) compatible blockchains. It was founded in 2019 by the developer duo and . Ethereum Virtual Machine Hilmar Orth Luis Schliesske Gelato aims to accelerate the adoption of web3 by providing DeFi, NFT and gaming applications with reliable and decentralized backend services which enable them to operate their web3 apps without a single point of failure. Gelato supports all major EVM blockchains, including Ethereum, Polygon, Fantom, Arbitrum, BNB Chain, Optimism and many more. A smart contract platform that operates on a blockchain compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) can facilitate exchanges on the Ethereum network. EVM compatible platforms allow developers to create decentralized applications (dApps) that are similar to those that run on Ethereum. Evolution Of Cross-Chain Applications Before we discuss the impact that autonomous, cross-chain dApps could have, we must understand how decentralized applications (dApps) have evolved so far. The first generation of decentralized applications was powered by Ethereum and had no cross-chain capabilities. These dApps could only be used by native users of the chain and were limited in functionality. Soon, the idea of multi-chains developed, and other blockchains, like Polygon, Avalanche, BNB chain etc., emerged by from Ethereum. Forking refers to a decision to branch off and generate a new blockchain with features or updates unavailable on the previous chain. This move enabled developers to redeploy their smart contracts on a different network, enjoying advantages like scalability or cheaper costs while remaining compatible with the previous ecosystem. Still, the protocols on other chains had very little communication, dissimilar interfaces and were not always managed by the same team. forking With the rise of , this situation eventually improved, and now we have multi-chain networks which can communicate with their instances on other chains. This works by triggering cross-chain messaging, which bridges to the other chain and performs the requested transaction. blockchain bridges Cross-chain messaging protocols utilize smart contracts to allow information to flow freely between blockchains that are otherwise isolated within the confines of their networks, making them similar to oracle networks as they both feed data across various chains. Multichain networks are an impressive development, but users still have to initiate the process and deal with the usual time delay that occurs. Hilmar believes that the next stage in the evolution of dApps  is the establishment of autonomous cross-chain applications. Autonomous cross-chain dApps  are revolutionary because users will no longer need to initiate the cross-messaging between chains. Instead, the smart contracts will automatically connect to the other chains when required. The two components required for this seamless setup are a cross-chain messaging protocol and an automating network like Gelato. With these two combined, smart contracts can be deployed autonomously across multiple chains. Abracadabra protocol is a practical example of an autonomous cross-chain dApp. Abracadabra Protocol is a DeFi lending platform that allows users to convert interest-bearing cryptocurrencies into its pegged stable coin, $MIM. The protocol’s native governance token is SPELL and is used for staking purposes and earning sSPELL, which grants voting rights and other returns on the platform. Abracadabra Abracadabra Money is blockchain-agnostic and has launched lending markets on networks such as Ethereum, Arbitrum, Fantom, etc. The protocol utilises the Gelato network to manage the payment systems of SPELL across these networks. How? Three times a week, Gelato takes a snapshot of how much SPELL is distributed on each chain, aggregates the amounts, and then sends this information back to Ethereum using a cross-messaging layer. Then on Ethereum, a transaction is called that triggers the distribution. Gelato automatically distributes the correct amount and bridges MIM to each chain. These actions do not require any interaction from developers. Many cross-messaging protocols can be used in this process, such as , and . By utilising Gelato Network for each contract automation, Abracadabra increases its speed and is protected against human errors making the protocol more secure and trustless. Layer Zero Connext Multichain The Future Of Multi-Chain Dapps Abracadabra isn’t the only protocol working with Gelato. In fact, Hilmar believes that more  dApps will be moving towards the autonomous cross chain model in the near future. Many DeFi platforms like Pancake Swap, Alpaca Finance and Curve are already using automation to reduce the operational costs of managing several chains. Gelato helps handle varying tasks from NFT lending periods to limit orders and yield rewards distribution. The frequency of these activities can be adjusted. Despite the many advantages of this system, it becomes very complex from a transaction payment perspective for protocols which are deployed on many chains to pay services like Gelato. That is why, Gelato has recently launched its novel payment system, which enables projects to pay for all costs associated with either the computation or the transactions fees on Gelato with a single balance on a single chain. . This means that protocols can pay for transactions on Ethereum with a USDC balance on Polygon, creating what Gelato refers to as “network abstraction”. 1Balance In Summary… It has taken years of evolution to enjoy the capabilities that we currently do on decentralised applications. By upgrading to autonomous cross-chain dApps , we would be able to unleash a whole new range of incredible functionalities. DApps will be deployed and operated on multiple chains simultaneously, sharing data, messages, and operating logic. In the future, users won’t need to know which chains they are on. For instance, they could auction an NFT on Optimism and let users on Avalanche participate with $AVAX. With such seamless interoperability, web2 users would easily migrate to web3 applications, leading to even more development in the ecosystem. As more blockchains are being created with a multitude of decentralized applications (dApps) being built and used on each one of them, the conversation around the need for an interoperable future has never been more important. There have been many discussions about the opportunities that a “multi-chain future” will bring. But how useful would it really be to have multiple ecosystems operating in silos? This is where cross-chain communication and bridges come in. Blockchain oracles are vital in enabling cross-chain communication and the interoperability of smart contracts across different blockchain environments, as they are responsible for ensuring that data from one chain is available on another chain in an accurate, secure and timely fashion. Interoperability ensures that users are able to interact with dApps on different platforms and transfer funds across blockchains with greater ease while enjoying reduced fees. For example, Alice has a Polygon wallet and wants to pay her friend, Ben, who only has a Bitcoin wallet. Both wallets will not be compatible with each other unless there is a bridge connecting them. Some examples of cross-chain bridges include , and . Wormhole Relay pNetwork Modular blockchains: Unlike monolithic blockchains like Bitcoin, that require all nodes and validators to execute the same transactions, modular blockchains separate the main functions of a blockchain into different layers. These layers are – the consensus layer, data availability layer and the execution layer. These layers are independent of each other and help to ensure the continued scalability of the network as more users and applications enter the ecosystem. This goes into more detail about how modular blockchains can improve network scalability. post EVM Compatible Blockchains Ethereum Virtual Machine or EVM compatibility refers to smart contracts that can be easily migrated from Ethereum to other EVM compatible blockchains, and vice versa. Some examples of EVM compatible blockchains include Binance Smart Chain, Polygon and Avalanche. Soulbound NFTs Soulbound non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are essentially non-transferable tokens. This means that these tokens can never be sold or transferred from one wallet to another. Due to this characteristic, soulbound NFTs can be used as permanent digital identities for Web3 participants. Another exciting use case would be for reputation. In a decentralized world, it can be difficult to know for sure if an individual or project can be trusted. They are made up of software development kits (SDKs), and communication protocols that support the operation of the blockchain. It is the foundation upon which layer 1 blockchains are built. Examples of L0s include and . Cosmos Polkadot Layer 1s (L1s) refer to the core protocol or set of rules that govern the operation of a blockchain network.
