Doing game development on the side with your co-workers is a great way to build relationships outside of work while doing something that’s fun. It’s also a cool thing when you finish another milestone in your game and get to show it to others. Additionally, you can do game jams with people at work. These are usually timed competitions (the most popular being Ludum Dare, which is a 48-hour competition if you’re going solo or 72 if you have a team) where game makers are given a theme and must develop a game based on that theme in the allotted time. Because of the nature of game jams, they tend to be great ways to get together for a weekend with co-workers, create a game you’re all excited about, and have fun in the process. 10. It’s fun. The best part about game development is that it can be incredibly fun. There were also some other major perks, but I’ll get to those later in this article. Getting to work To get from an idea in my head to a physical pair of glasses, I had to go through three simple steps: Design new frames around my existing lenses Print, make changes, and reprint. Make final adjustments and assemble the frame. Designing I used a free (browser-based) CAD tool called to design the frames, but any other CAD software like Solidworks or Fusion 360 would also work just fine. OnShape I first found a reference model which I could use to model my frames after. Then, I took a top-view picture of my lenses and traced them out in OnShape. After I had the lenses down, I was free to make any frame so long as I could make the frames fit. I decided to go with a more casual look as a first-test, but really any frame design could have worked. I decided to reference an existing design from to save time. here Original CAD design on OnShape Printing To print the design, I ended up using a cheap FDM printer and made the frames in PLA material. Although PLA’s properties are not the best suited for this application, I decided to use it because it would be easier to make adjustments to it after printing. I used 100% infill to give it a bit more weight with a 0.1mm layer height. If you’re planning on printing your own frames and are willing to spend more money for higher quality, I suggest using SLA or SLS. If you look at my frames, you can see some nozzle lines (which are avoidable by using SLA or SLS, or a really well-tuned printer) Final Adjustments Once you have a printed frame, there are some adjustments to be made. You can see that the CAD model of the frames was entirely flat. However, most market frames are very slightly curved at the nose. So, I heated mine up using a hairdryer and bent them at the nosepiece. I also made some small errors when designing the lenses, making them too large to press-fit onto the frames. I once again used my hair drier to soften the plastic and fit the lenses on tightly. Finally, the arm pieces were printed flat as well. To give them a more natural shape (and to prevent the glasses from slipping off my face), I heated them up slightly and pressed them to my head to mold them. Results The final result was a pair of glasses that worked surprisingly well for common tasks. This design was so close to a regular pair that nobody noticed they were 3D printed until they looked closely. You can see some of the small irregularities close up There were some small annoyances like having too little tension in the arms of the glasses (to solve this, I used an M2 screw instead of filament and made sure to not tighten the screw too much.) I would say that these glasses are good enough to be a permanent solution (though you would need a well-tuned printer to get it close to the same quality as regular frames). Since I've designed it myself, I can have any configuration of glasses styles, colors, and designs. Improvements One improvement I would make would be to maintain the same alignment between the lenses and the eyes. I'm pretty sure the lenses are meant to be at a certain position relative to the eye, so this would need to be kept in mind when designing. Fortunately for me, the alignment was really close to the same as my old frames so I didn't have many problems with that. Conclusion This project was really simple but super fun and cheap to make. I never thought I would end up wearing something I've designed and made by myself. In my eyes, this was one small win for me against the eyewear industry. This was when, after 20 years in journalism, I decided to update my skills and be a different professional. Why is SEO important? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Making it short, it works to transform the content available online into something more interesting to read, and easier to be found on search engines. This way, companies don’t need journalists to write their stories and publish them in magazines or newspaper anymore. On the contrary, people now search for products and companies directly on google. And because of that, SEO became the new press office, and this is how companies reach their clients. When I understood that, I immediately started studying and specializing on it. And this is something important if you wish to work with SEO: you will have to study, test, evaluate and repeat your strategies a lot of times. Considering that there are millions of websites, blogs and people writing relevant and interesting content all the time around the world, SEO presents itself as an important strategy to help users find what companies and service providers are offering online. So, the main reason why SEO is so important nowadays, is that companies must optimize their websites so that their target audience finds them when making basic searches. The opportunities I had because of SEO When you acquire technical knowledge such as being an expert in , people start asking how it works, what must be done to have better results, and all sorts of inquiries like that. SEO And after some time, I realized I had a business there. At this moment, it was when my professional career started to change. Unfortunately, to structure a SEO business is not an easy task, after all people who hire SEO experts are looking for results (and usually they want it very fast). However, optimizing a website to be found in the search results require some important aspects. One of the main differences between being a journalist and an SEO expert is that in journalism I didn’t need to worry too much about the digital world. On the other hand, when working with SEO, the focus is completely for the digital world. Whether in journalism there are only people involved, in SEO the professionals must consider people plus all the robots and factors they use to rank the most interesting content on the search engines. Among these, it’s possible to name some: Key words Synonyms Searched terms Transition words Length of sentences And many other. How did I start working with SEO? Website optimization Because online competition is everyday higher for businesses, all of them must use SEO optimization for their websites. It’s usual that the website optimization starts from a good and clean organization of all pages, where the user can easily interact. However, there are many other more technical issues to be addressed. So it’s important to hire qualified professionals to make this optimization work and reach results. This is one of the biggest opportunities in the SEO world. Even though it can be very technical and require skills, it’s a real and constant need of all companies. 2. Constant and quality content production More than pay someone to write fifty 1000-word articles and publish it at once with no quality control, it’s essential to regularly add content to companies’ blog/website. As everything in SEO, there is no fixed rule for it. What companies must to is to set the pace they are able to follow in the long term. Be it once every two weeks, once a week or even two to three times a week. And even more important, is to guarantee that the content that is being produced is well written and follows some basic SEO requirements to result in good positions in search results. You may be thinking this is such an easy task. However, what I realized by working with SEO is that people have problems with that as well. There are some reasons: There is no one in the company dedicated to content production; The leaders don’t understand its importance and consider it a waste of time or money; People don’t understand the search engine requirements. Because of all that, it’s also a great opportunity to specialize and provide good quality services for businesses of all kinds. 3. Results analysis Last but not least, the great thing about digital marketing is that it’s possible to track and analyze everything. But besides looking at data and graphs, it’s necessary to learn how to read all of it and get insights to improve the actions for the next week or month. In order to improve the business with analysis that really say something, the correct questions have to be done. And this is where one of the biggest career developments in SEO happened for me. After all, the efforts need to be measured, and to be the person who does it is a very valuable thing. My career is completely changed, and it’s a good thing I believe that professional development is very important for everyone. After all, to achieve better results and work with different people is something that moves human beings. Even though the first step for career change is difficult, when it comes to my experience, I will always recommend it.
