At HackerNoon, we believe transparency with the reader is the key to building trust between writer and reader. To give readers as much transparency as possible, we wanted to create quick and easy ways to tell the reader information they might want to know about a story before reading it. This could be something as simple as telling the reader if the story is a news piece or an opinion piece. On the other hand, there are more complicated things we might want to communicate to the reader, such as whether or not the writer has a vested interest in the companies they’re writing about, or if they used AI to write the piece. To accomplish these goals, we created Emoji Credibility Indicators! Now open-sourced on Figma Community & GitHub. Learn more about Emoji Credibility Indicators here. Designing Emoji Credibility Indicators Now, let’s dive into the process of designing Emoji Credibility Indicators. The initial design brief by David and our Editorial Team included 22 Emoji Credibility Indicators (related read, Every Emoji Credibility Indicator on HackerNoon Explained) divided into two categories: context/disclaimers and content types. In addition to their description, each credibility indicator was assigned an emoji for design inspiration. From here on in, it was on us (Me & Kien) to run wild with our imagination and bring these emoji indicators to life. Following HackerNoon’s design language, we chose the Pixel Art Style. After exploring several options for grid sizes, we opted for a 24px grid for pixelation since it retained the desired level of detail. As for the software of choice, I was a bit biased going for Adobe Illustrator since we get plenty of options when it comes to exporting to different file types + my familiarity with the grid tool (Adobe Photoshop, Aseprite, and Corel Draw are some good alternatives). Our pixel art design process consists of 5 steps, starting from basic shapes, drawing details, creating depth, adding strokes, and then merging shapes & exporting to different file types. Let’s take a deeper dive into these steps taking the Comedy/Satire emoji credibility indicator for example. Starting with Basic Shapes Whenever we do Pixel-Art/8-bit Designs, we start with a basic shape that resonates with the idea we have in mind. Being an ellipse, in the case of the Comedy/Satire emoji indicator (which was inspired by the ‘😂’ emoji). Drawing Details Then we head on to adding more details to the shape we just drew (like facial features in this case). Creating Depth: Highlights & Shadows To make it more realistic and less flat, we add highlights and shadows to the face. In this case, the light source was assumed to be up front and center which makes the shadows move to the edges and the highlights to the center. Pro Tip: Always try to use three shades of a color. One for the base, the lighter one for highlights, and the darker one for shadows. Adding Stroke To make it more defined, we added a stroke to wrap things up. Merging Shapes and Exporting To make them more usable, we merged the shapes and exported them as both PNGs and SVGs. Then, we repeated this whole process 21 more times and ended up with the Emoji Credibility Indicators we have on HackerNoon today. In the ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence, verifiable machine intelligence is quietly revolutionizing machine learning. This paradigm shift is not just a technological advancement; it represents a fundamental change in how we interact with and perceive the capabilities of machine learning models. At its core, verifiable machine intelligence is about establishing a new standard of reliability and trust in machine learning models. Traditionally, these models have been somewhat opaque, offering little insight into their inner workings or decision-making processes. How Verifiable Machine Intelligence works in practice — creating a Web3 Credit Score To return to the credit bureau glitch, if there were a community of data scientists and model-makers competing to create more accurate credit scoring models, any errors would be much more likely to have been spotted, and anyone competing for a share of revenue generated by those scores would have a very compelling reason to update the model with a more accurate version. Spectral got their start creating the MACRO Score, an on-chain credit score that looked at the transactions and contents of an Ethereum wallet to generate a score measuring that wallet’s likelihood of liquidation on an on-chain lending protocol. The Score was a success, with a capital efficiency simulation proving that their scores could help lower collateral requirements and interest rates for well-qualified borrowers, boosting profitability. They took the dataset they used to create the MACRO Score’s underlying ML model and are now using it as fodder for their first stream of inferences. They offered the data science community a significant bounty – $100,000 (with an additional 50K top-up) – and began a data science challenge, in addition to an 85 percent share of all revenue generated from the model after the bounties had been exhausted. After the initial bounties are paid out, anyone can add credit scores to their smart contract or application simply by incorporating the feed and paying for their use. Spectral is gradually offering new challenges, aiming to eventually have a library of ML inferences available. They will also offer a flexible format that makes integration into smart contracts or contributing a model simple despite the complex cryptography involved. They think that if they keep their heads down and keep doing good work, someone will take notice and good opportunities will land their way. But workplaces aren’t designed to lift people with good intentions and good skills. Working hard doesn’t necessarily translate into recognition and promotions. This mismatch between what employees expect and what they get is often the biggest root cause of disappointment, dissatisfaction, and frustration at work. But it doesn’t have to be this way. By incorporating simple habits and practices into their daily work, employees can do more impactful work that not only generates value for the organization but also gets them the attention they need. Employees who build credibility operate from an internal locus of control. They think about what they’re capable of doing instead of wasting time worrying about things outside their control. Stepping up and taking charge kicks off the solution region of their brain. They’re able to evaluate the situation from an objective point of view, consider different possibilities, and think creatively on the steps to take. Once people stop making excuses, stop blaming others, and take ownership of everything in their lives, they are compelled to take action to solve their problems. They are better leaders, better followers, more dependable and actively contributing team members, and more skilled in aggressively driving toward mission accomplishment. But they’re also humble—able to keep their egos from damaging relationships and adversely impacting the mission and the team. — Jocko Willink 7. Be a team player What is your intention when working with others? Do you think about your self-interests or do you think about adding value to others? When you think only about yourself, you make decisions that benefit you while ignoring how they may harm others. You act based on what you like and dislike without considering how your actions add value to the organization or its people. Credible employees don’t act solo. They’re team players. They work based on their team's needs or where their contribution will matter the most. Not trying to personally gain from every situation helps them keep a balanced perspective—they do work that matters to the organization while also contributing to their learning and growth. 8. Share knowledge If you’re an expert at something or knowledgeable in a specific field, you’ll have the capability to find solutions that others didn’t know existed. But having domain knowledge or expertise is not enough. What you do with that knowledge matters as much. Do you refuse to share knowledge with others or do you find opportunities to lift others up with it? You build credibility when your knowledge has an impact beyond projects and tasks. Helping others acquire your expertise even in small ways builds trust. They come to rely on you for guidance and advice. Lifting others up also has another advantage—they’re able to do your job which creates an opportunity for you to take on more challenging and complex tasks. 9. Be willing to change and adapt to the future needs Things change at a very fast pace in our work environments. When you stick to things you’ve always done before or choose a safe path, you may get the job done, but staying within your comfort zone also limits your growth. Ignoring future needs or not adapting to them makes your skills obsolete. You keep getting lower-level responsibilities that keep you busy but do not lead to growth. Employees who build credibility don’t lose sight of the future. They analyze what the future demands and constantly invest time in keeping up with it. Adopting a learning attitude helps them build new skills which keeps them prepared to tackle whatever comes their way. As the sermon drew to a close, I noticed the QR codes that were taped to the back of the chairs. The QR codes are used for attendees to learn more about the church and the programs they offer. You can learn about the church and its members and give to the church. All you need to do is scan the QR code. As a cyber security professional….and someone who is always paranoid, I never scan a QR code no matter where it is. I know it’s no way to live but seeing me scan a QR code is like hearing the pope say a curse word. An idea came to me as we bowed our heads in prayer. What if someone swapped out the church’s QR code with their own malicious QR code and stole credit card information? That is when I decided I was going to “Hack” the church…in theory anyway. “Father forgive me, for I have sinned.” Understanding QR Codes What are QR codes? A QR code (short for Quick Response code) is an array of black and white squares or pixels set in a grid that stores data for a machine to read. A smartphone or camera can quickly process the information contained in a QR code's specific arrangement of pixels, making it a convenient way to store and access data. Common uses in church settings (e.g., digital bulletins, online giving, event registration). Phishing Basics Phishing is a form of social engineering that involves communication via email, phone, or text requesting a user take action, such as navigating to a fake website. In both phishing and social engineering attacks, the collected information is used in order to gain unauthorized access to protected accounts or data. How QR Code Phishing Works QR code phishing works just like any other phishing attack, but QR codes are more convenient, and there isn’t usually a link to look at. They are also more versatile and can be implemented anywhere around the world. You can find them on your favorite TV shows, commercials, news stations, businesses, and churches. Why would church communities be an attractive target—trusting environment? There are often less tech-savvy individuals and a potential for high-value donations. There also isn’t any form of validation on the back of the pews that indicate the QR codes are the legitimate QR codes….Unless you scan one and find out for yourself. If this scenario was a plausible one, how would a cybercriminal achieve it? Have your communion juice and crackers, there will be a lot to confess later. Unholy Intention If a cybercriminal wanted to conduct a QR code phishing attack on a church, the first item they would need to do is reconnaissance and what the tactic would be. In this case, we will use a QR code phishing attack and attempt to steal credit card information. To be successful, they would need to research the church and what church members do when they give donations. For this attack, the cybercriminal will do the following to orchestrate the attack. Reconnaissance on how the church receives donations.
Clone the church website and the portion for giving.
Buy a domain that is similar to the church domain and host it on a VPS environment.
Write code to direct the payments to the cybercriminal.
Test.
Attend church, and place QR codes on the back of the pews.
Wait and capture the credit card information.
Buy enough grace to get out of HELL…. “Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here” After concluding the reconnaissance portion of the attack, the cybercriminal would locate the church’s website and clone it for the attack. This will assist in persuading the church members to proceed further after they scan the QR code at church. The idea is to keep the church members from suspecting that the website they are visiting is malicious. Cloning the actual website helps aid in the attack because we, as humans, seldom look at the URL portion. To begin the attack, we look to a tool known as the “Social Engineering Toolkit” or “SET.” The Social Engineer Toolkit (SET) is specifically designed to perform advanced attacks against the human element. SET was designed to be released with the https://www.social-engineer.org launch and has quickly become a standard tool in a penetration tester’s arsenal. SET was written by David Kennedy (ReL1K) and with a lot of help from the community, it has incorporated attacks never before seen in an exploitation toolset. The attacks built into the toolkit are designed to be targeted and focused attacks against a person or organization used during a penetration test. To clone a website using SET is easy. I then waited to see if any information was captured. This was made possible due to the fact that when you access the fake website I created, it operates on port 80 which is all clear text communications. After waiting just a few moments, I checked my computer to see if any requests had been sent. As I looked down, I could see that the requests that had been made with the credit card had been captured successfully. The attack worked with a fake QR code and cloned a fake website. From Sinner to Saint The attack was alarming to me, but that is because I am a cyber security professional and know how attacks work. To the average church member, being instructed by the pastor to scan the QR code if you wanted to give, they wouldn’t question it. That is where the issue with QR codes lies. The dream of homeownership is fading for many. A global housing crisis is making it a struggle for millions to find affordable places to live. The burden is heavy, with people across the world forced to spend a crippling amount of their income just for rent. In the United States alone, Barron's estimates a staggering 11 million people are spending over half their income to keep a roof over their heads. There is a reason why this is called a global housing crunch: UN Habitat estimates we need to build an incredible 96,000 new affordable homes every single day to house the 3 billion people who will need proper housing by 2030. Solving the global housing crisis also requires innovative solutions such as blockchain technology. In this interview, Adrian Gaffor, the CEO and founder of The Real Lifestyle Company(TRL)shared valuable insights into the role of blockchain technology in the search for a lasting solution to the global housing problem. Mr. Gaffor, can you briefly tell us about yourself and your route to web3? Sure! I Co-founded and currently hold an active role as the Board Member and Group Chief Executive Officer at Esports Business Network (EBN), one of the leading esports marketing groups in Asia. Our focus over the years was to develop the esports industry by bringing brands into the World of gaming and esports across multiple regions to enable brands and communities to thrive through our ecosystem. In the real sense, democratizing access to global housing markets simply means enabling people from all walks of life to participate in and benefit from real estate opportunities—regardless of their geographic or economic constraints. This largely involves lowering entry barriers through innovative financing models and leveraging technology such as blockchain to simplify and secure transactions, thus opening up the global real estate market to investors and homeowners who were previously sidelined or shut out by the status quo. How do you explain the accessibility and affordability of homeownership? Accessibility simply means removing traditional hurdles such as hefty down payments and strict mortgage requirements. We focus on affordability so that homeownership costs remain within the economic reach of people across various income levels. Research on news and social content aggregation has focused primarily on headline detection, timeline construction and clustering (Bouras and Tsogkas, 2012; Laban and Hearst, 2017), and event detection (Atefeh and Khreich, 2015; Kumaran and Allan, 2004). There exist user-oriented products in this space, such as Google News Stories [7], and Ground.news [8]. Some outlets, such as Propublica, aggregate their news stories into timelines [9]. Reading Interfaces and Sensemaking Recent work on reading interfaces has primarily focused on scientific literature, augmenting documents with information about cited papers (Lo et al., 2023; Kang et al., 2022), or augmenting references within the documents themselves (Head et al., 2021). For the News domain specifically, Laban and Hearst (2017) aggregates articles and extracts key quotes to construct a timeline for a given story. We are also aware of an abstract describing work to combine multiple article headlines and ledes into a single digestible form, though no follow-up is available (Glassman et al., 2020). Fact Verification and NLI Natural Language Inference is a task focused on classifying the relationship between a pair of sentences as either “neutral", “entailment", or “contradiction." Datasets such as SNLI (Bowman et al., 2015) and MNLI (Williams et al., 2017) have become major benchmarks for natural language processing research. Recent work has also considered document-level NLI (Koreeda and Manning, 2021; Chen et al., 2022), as well as cross-document reasoning based in NLI (Schuster et al., 2022), and scalable pairwise reasoning (Milbauer et al., 2023). There is also a growing body of work on NLP systems for fact verification and attribution. Fact Verification and NLI Natural Language Inference is a task focused on classifying the relationship between a pair of sentences as either “neutral", “entailment", or “contradiction." Datasets such as SNLI (Bowman et al., 2015) and MNLI (Williams et al., 2017) have become major benchmarks for natural language processing research. Recent work has also considered document-level NLI (Koreeda and Manning, 2021; Chen et al., 2022), as well as cross-document reasoning based in NLI (Schuster et al., 2022), and scalable pairwise reasoning (Milbauer et al., 2023). A. Appendix: Prompt for Claim Extraction Abstract Reading and understanding the stories in the news is increasingly difficult. Reporting on stories evolves rapidly, politicized news venues offer different perspectives (and sometimes different facts), and misinformation is rampant. However, Existing solutions merely aggregate an overwhelming amount of information from heterogenous sources, such as different news outlets, social media, and news bias rating agencies. We present NEWSSENSE, a novel sensemaking tool and reading interface designed to collect and integrate information from multiple news articles on a central topic. NEWSSENSE augments a central, grounding article of the user’s choice by linking it to related articles from different sources, providing inline highlights on how specific claims in the chosen article are either supported or contradicted by information from other articles. Using NEWSSENSE, users can seamlessly digest and cross-check multiple information sources without disturbing their natural reading flow. Our pilot study shows that NewsSense has the potential to help users identify key information, verify the credibility of news articles, and explore different perspectives. In the quest for knowledge, news readers today must contend with a rapidly evolving 24-hour news cycle, multiple news venues competing for attention and clicks, and the challenge of integrating fact-based reporting, opinion pieces, and social media commentary (Lazer et al., 2018; Benkler et al., 2018; Farkas and Schou, 2019). With news becoming increasingly politicized (Faris et al., 2017) readers also face the challenge of identifying and avoiding misinformation, disinformation, and hyperbolic “clickbait" as they try to remain informed about the world around them. Various solutions have been proposed to assist with users’ news reading. For example, media watchdog companies have created media bias charts to represent political leaning and credibility of news sources [1] [2]. However, these resources force users to rely on potentially untrustworthy third-party designations of media bias, which treat each news source as a whole, without digging into specific articles or topics. While novel automatic fact checking (Thorne et al., 2018) and fake news detection (Zhou and Zafarani, 2020; Chen et al., 2015) systems can provide verification per-article, these approaches typically rely on a preordained corpus of verified facts which cannot keep up with the always-evolving facts, and may not reflect user preferences or multilateral perspectives. Aggregating articles from heterogeneous sources seem a more promising direction for cross-checking new facts (without predetermined groundtruths) and collecting different perspectives, but existing attempts are still too coarse and overwhelming. For example, both Google News’ “Stories" [3] feature and Ground.news [4] collect articles about the same events but display them in the form of exhaustive lists – Users are still forced to read and compare each article on its own. We argue that instead of simply collecting and aggregating news articles, information and claims from multiple sources should be integrated in a way that allows users to identify fine-grained claim-level bias, spin, controversy, or evidence. We present NEWSSENSE, a novel framework for sensemaking within a cluster of documents, to address the three key problems of news reading – bias, factuality, and article overload – in a single streamlined interface. NEWSSENSE leverages existing modular NLP techniques to identify and link claims made across a cluster of news articles, such that these articles become references for each other. NEWSSENSE also displays the linking information using an interactive reading interface, which allows users to easily explore the cross-document connections without being overwhelmed. In pilot user studies, we see that the NEWSSENSE framework has the potential to help users identify key information, verify the credibility of news articles, and explore different perspectives. While NEWSSENSE is primarily implemented for news articles, our framework can be easily generalized to other assisted reading and cross-checking scenarios (e.g., compare multiple manuscripts in literature reviews). Appendix: Prompt for Claim Extraction 4 Pilot Study To gather feedback on the proposed NEWSSENSE interface and provide insights for the actual implementation, we conducted a pilot user study using a NewsReader mockup built with Figma [10]. This section describes the design and results of the study. 4.1 Study Design We aim to collect feedback on NEWSSENSE’s basic functionality, interface design, and content quality. The participants were assigned a task of reading a news article using NEWSSENSE and answering a set of questions. The questions focused on the content of the news, how and where the user located information, and their level of trust in the information. These questions aimed to assess the basic functionality of NEWSSENSE in helping readers understand news comprehensively, to motivate further development of the system. 4.2 Results Following the pilot user study with over 10 users, we identified several key findings. First, all users found NEWSSENSE to be useful in locating important information and verifying the credibility of news articles, aligning with our initial goal. The user-friendly interface of NEWSSENSE was wellreceived, though participants suggested enhancing interactivity to set it apart from other solutions. For instance, displaying real-time feedback like “NewsSense is analyzing the article" during loading. Regarding content quality, some users found NEWSSENSE limited and suggested increased labeling or categorization within articles. One user noted Two highlighted sentences per page are insufficient for in-depth analysis." User preferences varied for article summarization, with some wanting more key points and others preferring brevity. Contradicting previous feedback, one user preferred “Summarizing key points only, rather than selecting sentences with unclear relevance." Addressing this, NEWSSENSE could allow customization, letting users choose key point count and filter supporting/- contradicting data. 4.3 Study Takeaways We found that users liked how NewsSense highlighted important sentences from an article. We realized that the claims which are consistent across multiple articles (ie, those which are supported at least once) are likely to be the most important aspects to a given story. NEWSSENSE could inform readers when there are key claims from across the article cluster missing from the article they are reading. We also found that the bias labels for news venues could be overwhelming, and including them ran counter to our aim of reference-free verification; we eliminated these labels. Users also appreciated how highlighted sentences functioned as summaries. Consequently we enhance the visibility of text highlights and further emphasize the alignment or contradiction of specific source by making the External Evidence cards colored accordingly.
