Whether you are already working as a product manager, thinking about a job in product management, or just work with product managers, one thing is certain: you will probably hear a different definition of what a product manager is and does from each person you ask. There is a lot of confusion about what a product manager does on a day-to-day basis. Is the product manager the “ ” (which is a broad and misunderstood definition), the person who manages the product (a much narrower view of product management), or both? Significant differences exist between the responsibilities of a product manager and the way they do business in a large enterprise, and what a product manager needs to do when working in a start-up setting. After experiencing working in both environments along side dozens of product managers for more than 10 years, I thought perhaps we should stop trying to create a standard definition of the product manager’s role and instead spell out the various roles a product manager must often play in a dynamic environment. The following items are compiled from notes I’ve take over my time both working as a product manager and interacting with other product managers. Who is the product manager and what do they do? Perhaps we should stop making the definition of the product manager and write down the roles that this person should undertake in the company step by step. The following items are composed of notes on paper, notebooks, and computers I took after long thoughts. They . They know the problems of existing customers and try to identify the problems of prospective customers. know the customer They are very capable of . When presenting the product, they focus less on specific features and functionality and instead tell a story about how their product meets the needs of customers and helps them be successful. They understand how to tailor their story to make it easy for different types of customers to relate. telling stories They . As part of this process, they again use stories and do not emphasize on the technical features of the product. keep in touch with the media They , figuring out which people will invest the necessary time and resources, will actively use the product, and will provide thoughtful and valuable feedback. find the first beta customers They able to engage with happy customers who have been using the product and get them to . agree to spend time providing information and feedback for use in a case study They , write the text, create the story, publish it on the web site and also find other channels for distributing the study. prepare the case study They create the (step-by-step marketing). They train potential customers who leave their e-mail addresses according to the prescribed criteria. rules of drip marketing They have . basic web page preparation skills They determine the price or the price range of the product, and while doing that, they also research how similar products are priced. They follow them through all kinds of channels (social media, web, blog). They do not create financial, technological and administrative excuses. They first focus on their product. They use their time efficiently. They deal with events, not people. They know their opponents They focus not only on the product itself, but on the income and the customer as well. How many technical features the product has is of secondary importance. They utilize qualitative and quantitative values ​​to improve the product. They know how to evolve the product using numbers, instincts and feedbacks. They make their own reports on time and share them with both top and side units. They ensure that the product development process is transparent throughout the entire organization. They are open to communicating with their teammates even when the ideas from the team seem to be pointless. They do not care how valid the suggestions are, but it’s important to keep them flowing. After writing all these items, we can easily make the following conclusion: The product manager is never the person who gets the ideas from inside and outside the company and selects the best among them and then gives the job to the development team and makes sure it gets done. On the contrary, the product manager is the person that has countless abilities like rapid development, team play, customer recognition, increasing the sales, user experience enhancement. In order to accomplish this, a product manager must be a person who can listen, decide, make clear communication, and overcome his or her ego. In short, a good product manager always wins. However, while the correlation seems as direct and obvious as it can possibly be, the matter is much more complex and multi-layered. The thing is that the CSAT survey is usually offered immediately following an interaction, and most customers rate your service by this most recent experience. You may get the highest rating with the customer being more than happy with how your service agent helped them – but what if the customer contacted the service to return a product, in the first place? Not exactly what you expected, right? This leads us to a conclusion that while CSAT is a valuable tool for monitoring the efficiency of your customer service and, to a lesser extent, the quality of your product, you should not focus on CSAT only if you want to increase retention. Customer satisfaction, although an important indicator, still is not the only factor that influences retention. What is customer retention? Now, customer retention is something different. Remember, it is how customers act towards you and your service and how often they return to you. You retain your customers when they renew their subscription, make regular purchases, upgrade to a premium version. The form may be different but the essence is the same – they come back. When they don’t, it’s called “churn”, and an upward churn trend should make you really worried. It is much easier – and cheaper! – to keep your existing customers than attract new ones, this is why businesses are so concerned about customer retention and loyalty. Both retention and churn deal with clear numbers, therefore, they are easily measurable. Being, in fact, two sides of the same coin, these two metrics are based on the number of customers at the beginning and end of a period. The calculation of retention uses the number of acquired customers, while the calculation of churn – the number of lost customers. Monitoring your customer retention over time, you can see whether you are losing customers or retaining them and getting new ones. Do customer satisfaction and customer retention correlate? Mostly, they do, but in reality, there may be cases when customer satisfaction and retention show distinctly opposite behavior. Dissatisfied customers may remain with you while satisfied customers may go. Unfortunately, that happens, especially now when the market has become really crowded and highly competitive. Depending on your type of business, the industry in which you operate, your target groups, price policies, service organization, the reasons for such behavior may be different but we may still find some common points. Why satisfied customers may want to take their money elsewhere? Customers may be OK with your product but wanting something better – more advanced, modern, technologically sophisticated. Think of the SaaS industry – there are hundreds of apps that provide similar services but some may be slightly more feature-rich than others.Your competitors may offer a lower price. With nearly the same product or service quality, even a small price difference can tip the scales. The difference may be even not in the price as such but in slightly better conditions – a longer subscription period, more flexible cancellation conditions, a longer list of included options.Customers may experience certain changes in their personal situation that affects their lifestyle – a salary cut, a move to another place, a large but necessary loan, even a new baby. They need to make sacrifices and your service may be one of them. Sad but true.Your customers may get simply bored and start seeking new experiences. When you gather customer retention and satisfaction statistics over some time you will see some definite trends that show the direction in which you need to develop. Analyze the data you obtain from customer metrics and try to find answers to some of the key questions: Is there a distinct segment of customers that is growing or shrinking? Millennials or Generation Z? Office workers or freelancers? B2B or B2C sector companies? This knowledge will allow you, on the one hand, to target your marketing campaigns better and, on the other hand, to improve your product to cater to the groups that need attention.Calculate your customer value over time. Tasks are central to people’s lives and more support is needed for complex tasks in search settings. Some limited support for these tasks already exists in search engines, but copilots will expand the task frontier to make more tasks actionable and address the “last mile” in search interaction: task completion [58]. Moving forward, search providers should invest in “better together” experiences that utilize copilots plus traditional search, make these joint experiences more seamless for searchers, and add more support for their use in practice, e.g., help people to quickly understand copilot capabilities and potential and/or recommend the best modality for the current task or task stage. This includes experiences where both modalities are offered separately and can be selected by searchers and those where there is unification and the selection happens automatically based on the query and the conversation context. The foundation models that power copilots have other search-related applications, e.g., for generating and applying intent taxonomies [43] or for evaluation [19]. We must retain a continued focus on human-AI cooperation, where searchers stay in control while the degree of system support increases as needed [44], and on AI safety. Searchers need to be able to trust copilots in general but also be able to verify their answers with minimal effort. Overall, the future is bright for IR, and AI research in general, with the advent of generative AI and the copilots that build upon it. Copilots will help augment and empower searchers in their information seeking journeys.
