From Compass to Positioning Systems: Evolution of Location Tracking Location tracking has become such an ubiquitous term that it’s nearly impossible to imagine our lives without it. Outdoor navigation using GPS is an integral part of our daily lives. One study claims that GPS Tracking Device Market would be worth $2.89 bn by 2023. Almost every app you use on your smartphone utilizes GPS to fetch location specific info/feed. GPS finds its extensive use in finding routes, distance, mode of conveyance etc. As useful as it is for outdoor tracking, it fails to work in indoors. That necessitates the need of which guides you in searching objects in a confined space. indoor positioning systems Now, let’s go back in time and get to know how the location tracking technologies have reached its current status. History of Compass History of Compass The 1st hint of a compass trades back to China during 221–206 B.C. But, an event in 1983 changed the course of the future by making GPS public. When a Korean passenger jet deviated form its original route and mistakenly entered into a Soviet prohibited area, it was shot down by Soviet SU-15. This triggered president Ronald Regan to make GPS public, considering that GPS could’ve prevented such mishap. Thus, GPS became public with an accuracy restricted to a radius of 100 meters. This was done in order to ensure that the best data was accessible to only the U.S military. Fortunately, in the year 2000, President Bill Clinton made the standard GPS available to the public. And the rest, as they say, is history. Every location-aware app of your smartphone owes to that day. Rise of Indoor Positioning Indoor Positioning As we progress, we are no longer restricted to getting lost in outdoors, indoor wayfinding or object finding too has become a major challenge. Shopping Malls, Airports, Warehouses are such confined areas where we often find ourselves stuck at some point in time, for not being able to find our desired shop or counter etc. You must’ve even tried to use GPS. But that’s where GPS takes the back seat. Here come indoor positioning technologies to your rescue. Microwave is easily impacted by obstacles like walls, roofs etc., so, GPS is not suitable for indoor positioning. Thus, if you wish to have a continuously unfettered navigation system, an integration of indoor and GPS would work for the best. A recent report from the research firm MarketsandMarkets estimates the indoor location market — which includes indoor navigation as well as indoor data tracking (such as how long someone spends in a specific store in the mall) — will be worth $41 billion by 2022. Future of Indoor Positioning Future of Indoor Positioning is finding huge popularity across various industries like manufacturing transportation, logistics, healthcare, retail etc. In every sector, both navigational and tracking features are utilized. Indoor positioning A number of radio technologies are currently available which can help in creating a full-fledged indoor positioning system. Probably the day is not very far, when you would miss the process of finding your ways out or searching any stuff inside your own houses. Very soon we would probably find ourselves having more time then we could ever spend. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Just like how we now talk about ‘the time we had to remember every route, ask for directions, sometimes roam around for hours before reaching the intended destinations?’, we would be talking about ‘the time we had to remember where we kept our stuffs, search for our forgotten stuffs for hours?’ The usage of the terms ‘lost/searching’ would become rare. But, just like every technology, there are two facets to it. There’s already a lot of on-going debate on Google maps knowing about your whereabouts better than you yourself can remember. Cameras in shopping malls, airports are already doing more than enough to make us feel watched. So, how would we take it if we are told that this ‘watching’ would get serious as our visibility would get beyond cameras. Probably the only place you can move freely is within your own homes. Have you ever felt the adrenaline rush of checking your bank account, unsure if the numbers will spell adventure or setback? That's the daily gamble for us digital nomads, making not just about numbers but about navigating life. budget planning I tried different budgeting/financial planning apps and created “one more tool.” The Challenge of a Nomadic Wallet Picture this: You're in Phuket, rent’s due, a baby's needs, and a new currency exchange rate to wrap your head around. It’s not just about tracking expenses; it’s about predicting life in different currencies. Traditional money management advice falls flat when your lifestyle is as dynamic as the places you explore. It’s worth mentioning that personal budgeting is different for everyone, depending on so many factors, so I can’t imagine a one-fits-all solution is possible. This article is mostly about my own experience in setting up the budget. I genuinely believe that some people struggle with the same issues as I did, where existing solutions do half the work at most. It takes months to years to properly prepare it, learn your habits, do educated estimates, and stick to the plan. Even so, emergencies happen, and you’d better be ready. When you’re a nomad (or traveler, or entrepreneur, or you’re just starting your path in financial planning) - you always deal with extreme uncertainty. There always are things you couldn’t think of a week ago; there are always things that will happen in a few weeks or months you are not ready for. That’s where many people overspend, underestimate, and fall into money stress. The problem As a nomad and expat with a family, I had to deal with numerous problems I was unprepared for with “traditional” money planning approaches. The variety of living costs - from rent to groceries, medical expenses, visas, taxes, etc. are different every time. I always have at least three active currencies in mind - the local one, my homeland currency, and the payroll currency - it’s tricky to track everything in one place. But the main problem is the question: “Do I have enough money till the next payroll?”. It’s easier to answer if your budget is relatively constant - you learn it, and you’re more or less confident with estimates. But when you need to know when to buy tickets, when your rent deposit will be returned, payroll changes, etc. - it is easy to miss that little thing and get into the big problem: But payroll is on the 5 and 25 of the month (for example) Estimates show a positive monthly balance You have considerable expenses between 5 and 25 (flight and rent, for example) You’re broke for a week because of that There are lots of variations of this case, but the general idea is the same: Can I spend X now always to have enough cash Should I transfer Y from one account to another (it may take days) And so on. Should I take N from the fund and return after Z days? Surprisingly, there are not many solutions for this case, and none help to answer all of them. The Misfit of Existing Tools After diving into , my comfort zone, I quickly hit a wall—the nomad's wall. No premade spreadsheet was ready for the financial gymnastics of managing rent in dinars, groceries in rubles, and savings in dollars. Excel Existing solutions and what’s missing Here, I’ll list a few options I’ve discovered. To be clear on what I’m looking for - I want to find two main features: Daily balance in the calendar Multi-currency support Excel/Google Sheets Of course, the first thing most people refer to when it comes to budgeting is Excel. There are countless templates, presets, and macroses to help with this. Actually, “Excel on steroids” tools like AirTable, Notion, and others also go here. It’s hard to underestimate the power of those tables - you can customize them in whatever way you like, write your macroses, and craft The System. There is nothing wrong with this approach in general - it helped thousands of people to keep track of their money. But when it comes to the case above, it lacks several essential things that are very hard to handle, and even if we can do it, it becomes a Frankenstein. Plus, if we want to simplify logging expenses - it’ll require even more effort. Regarding daily balance and multi-currency - you’d better be an Excel wizard to implement something like this on your own. In conclusion, it works for some, but it is not the best choice for us here. Expense tracking apps They’re following in our queue. Most offer neat UI, allowing you to visualize spending habits, set goals, and adjust plans, and are suitable for those who don’t want to bother with Excel. Often, those are mobile-only, which is excellent for quick logging but struggle to show things that may be important. Some offer multi-currency support (some with great auto-conversions to show all of them in Euros, like ZenMoney) and other cool features; others (DollarBird and Calendar Budget) - show daily balance, but only in one currency. After a few days of searching and several months of testing, I’ve realized that, for example, Calendar Budget is a great tool - it shows daily balances that support multiple currencies (but when you look at the total balance of several accounts with different currencies it just sum up numbers, so if you have 100 Thai Bath, 100 dollars and 100 Argentinian pesos, you’ll see you have 300 in total). Plus, it looks pretty outdated, so I still don’t have all my questions resolved. So, I’ve started building my own thing. Crafting My Solution First, I’ve decided to do the - to test the idea, find some use cases, etc. Two evenings later, I realized things were getting quite complex; the target was still not reached, and the solution wouldn’t work anyway. prototype in AirTable Okay, let’s write some code. Frustration became an innovation. I coded a prototype, envisioning a dashboard that understands the ebb and flow of a traveler's life. Here’s a sneak peek: ￼ Notice the highlighted cell? That's the danger zone indicator, telling me when my finances are walking a tightrope. This screenshot is a bit later version, but here is the solution in a nutshell - we can log transactions in different currencies, see the balance for each currency, and, in this case - see that the cell below is highlighted if the balance is negative (which was the most important feature to me) Later, I added an option to display the balance summed across accounts in a single currency and lots of other things. For example, I’ve simplified reconciliation - pull the natural balance for each account and keep planning. But one of the most significant improvements I didn’t see previously - is a ChatGPT input from the single-line message in Messenger. I use Telegram, so this - is how it looks now: It auto-detects the amount, account, date, category, and type of transaction. It’s WIP yet, so it's not 100% accurate, but still. It’s only a fraction of the features this product has at the moment, and even more are coming, but this allowed me to switch from all other apps and finally see the accurate picture of my budget and see in advance if there are potential risks so that I can handle them timely. Resilient people are aware of situations, their emotional reactions, and the behavior of those around them. As a result, resilient people can work through hard times, learn from them, and grow stronger and more capable of overcoming hard things in the future. However, it always seems quite mysterious to me how one can cultivate resilience. According to ,  resilience goes hand-in-hand with self-compassion. Psychology Today "Self-compassion involves wanting health and well-being for oneself and leads to proactive behavior to better one's situation rather than passivity. And self-compassion doesn't mean that I think my problems are more important than yours. It just means I think my problems are also important and worthy of attention." If resilience goes hand-in-hand with self-compassion, how can one foster self-compassion? A published study on explains the relationship between physical activities and self-compassion. Springer.com The study concludes that “the relationship between physical activities and self-compassion was significant while investigating the effect of non-mind-and-body interventions and constructing a mechanism of physical activities and self-compassion can be done as future implications.” I am a living example of how physical activities can help cultivate self-compassion and resilience. I have been a marathon and ultra-marathon runner since 2012. But, looking back on the days before 2012, I was living a pretty plain life. After obtaining a master's degree from NYU in 2007, I had a 9-to-5 job on Wall Street; no hobbies, and no ambitions. I had worked for the same company and received an okay salary for seven years. It was all fine. Something hit me on that marathon day that I NEEDED a change in my life. In Nov 2011, I started running because I was inspired by runners in the 2011 NYC marathon while cheering for the race. Something hit me on that marathon day that I NEEDED a change in my life. You can watch . Before Nov 2011, I rarely engaged in physical activities, let alone running. I was never a fan of running. the TEDx Talk about my journey to qualifying for the Boston marathon Truth be told, I once passed out during a running assessment in high school. The whole school knew about it, and I felt deeply humiliated and embarrassed. Running brought back that traumatic experience. After the 2011 NYC marathon, I started running for 5 minutes daily because that was all I could do then. After that, I slowly built up to marathon-level fitness and completed a 60 km race in Nov 2012. It is interesting to note that the change in my career came in 2013 when I realized I had stopped learning and growing for nearly five years. So, I went on studying and passing all the certificates from Google. I interviewed with over 30 agencies. They turned me down because I speak with an accent and had no prior experience. Finally, one agency took a chance on me. The rest is history. Working at an early-stage startup requires mental strength, optimism, and resilience. By 2016, I had completed six marathons, one 60 km race, one 50-mile race on Appalachian Trail, and one 100 km race. 2016 was critical for me because it was the first time I had a startup job in the United States. I remember I felt like throwing up every day for about a month after starting and told my friends that I was about to quit. But, magically, I persevered, worked for two years, and grew the company to 20x before I left. All I could think of was the running and physical activities I did built resilience in me and carried me through all the stress and anxiety at work. My personal and career growth has been excelling since then. Running is great, but it's not fulfilling to me anymore. So I want to engage in different and more challenging sport - triathlon, which means I have to face my fear, another trauma from childhood - swimming in deep water. As a kid, I learned to swim by going to the pool daily and observing others. The swimming pool had a shallow side and a deep (8 feet) side. I had always been on the shallow side. When I finally picked up swimming, a kid challenged me to swim across the entire pool. Out of self-esteem and ego, I agreed to it without assessing my strength, skill, and risk. At halfway, I was already exhausted, but I could not stop because the pool was so deep. I almost drowned but did not want to get laughed at afterward, so I persisted. Magically, I did swim across the other side, but I had no strength at all to get out, so the guard pulled me out of the pool. That traumatic feeling never leaves me. Even nowadays, I still need to withhold some level of control not to panic when I am swimming in the middle of a deep pool. With the triathlon event that I am about to partake in Oct 2022, I have to swim in the ocean for 1.2 miles. Therefore, I need to learn how to navigate wind and current in the open water and keep calm while swimming. It's scary, but I am ready to conquer more challenging and hard things. In my leadership role at my current startup, I have a lot of responsibilities to grow the company at an exponential pace while being a role model at the workplace to help the team cultivate resilience. I admitted to the team that the triathlon event scares the shit out of me, and I am showing the team how I break down a daunting task into smaller pieces and tackle them one by one. Eventually, I will achieve my goal.

I will be discussing how self-compassion can benefit the hacker. I think self-compassion is an idea that --while it is not revolutionary-- is revolutionary.  It is the idea that you would do better to be kinder to yourself, treating yourself like a friend, instead of with self-criticism. And hackers and techies alike will benefit from learning about self-compassion because it can make not only their lives better, but can also improve the lives of others around them. What are some of the varying perspectives on this subject that you’re aware of? [Example: if some people are pro, why are they pro? If some people are against, why are they against?] Some people think that treating yourself with compassion might make them weak or foolish, when, in fact, it makes people stronger emotionally.  People who practice self-compassion are more resilient and able to manage their feelings. I think the biggest thing people miss is shrugging off ideas like this without trying them. If you practice self-compassion, you might feel differently about it.  I tried self-compassion practices for 1 week and felt better about my internal monologue. So many people struggle with negative self-talk and criticism.  Self-censorship prevents many people from fulfilling their goals and dreams.  Self-compassion practices can allow someone to feel more free from critical thoughts and be more creative. What is your favourite quote or paragraph from this article? Why? I like the example that Neff gives about personally benefitting from compassionate self-talk during the youtube video. Based on her vulnerability in the video, I felt persuaded to try self-compassion meditations and practices.  It helped me to know she personally benefitted from self-compassion and it seemed to work for her. Was there a part of the article that you didn’t necessarily think about before, what was it? I did not think about how easy it would be to change my internal thoughts by being nicer to myself. Self-compassion practices made me think about this more.  It made my life better this week and could help other people. Is there anything else about this you’d like us to know? [Trends, future, concerns, hopes… etc.] Generally, loving kindness meditations are done to support others in the world.  It is possible to extend this loving-kindness meditation to yourself through compassionate self-talk. Self-compassion may make the hurtful, critical thoughts of many hackers decrease. Today however, I’d like to write about a holistic topic — compassion. I’ve noticed founders and employees who work for crypto companies, especially wallets and exchanges, speaking down on people who have lost their crypto in a phishing scam. I won’t link to them as I otherwise respect how they run their businesses. Most people don’t read instructions. I would like to remind everyone that we are all human. We all make mistakes. There isn’t a single person in the crypto world or beyond, who hasn’t made a silly mistake at some point in their career. And we all have more mistakes ahead of us. The trick is trying not to make the same mistake twice. It doesn’t matter how often you tweet advice about anti-phishing techniques and tools to your techie followers. The vast majority of people buying and selling crypto don’t read your tweets and they most certainly don’t read your reddit posts. Well, some of them do. But you get my point. By blasting people and making fun of them for making “stupid mistakes”, you only make yourself look mean and horrible. Even if it’s not your company’s fault, there’s no need to tell people that it’s their own fault for not following your instructions. It’s possible to show compassion without accepting responsibility for their actions — however “stupid” they were. Most people don’t read instructions. By demonstrating more compassion, everyone benefits. You will feel better for it, the people who lost their crypto will feel less stupid and ashamed and everyone witnessing on the sidelines, will respect you a lot more for how you deal with such situations. Cybersecurity and in particular, phishing, is growing exponentially and will be a VERY serious problem in 2018 — much worse than traditional email phishing. In the security world we have a saying — “it’s easier to attack than it is to defend”. We are all open to attack. All of us are a target in the crypto community, so let’s show each other more support moving forward. Without the “stupid crypto enthusiasts” none of us would be working in this field. So let’s be thankful to them and each other.
