HackerNoon Reporter: Please tell us briefly about your  background. I’m a serial entrepreneur, and previously the Regional Director at momondo and CMO of the Swedish electric car company Uniti. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Cogo gathers all shared electric scooters, bikes, cars, and mopeds from 190 different mobility operators in 500 cities worldwide. We want to help the transition from private car ownership to shared electric vehicles to improve the cities we live in. What is the origin story? I saw the increased popularity of shared mobility, and specifically for electric scooters in 2018. Back then I was involved in another mobility startup in Sweden called Uniti (electric car), and I saw this new industry growing in front of my eyes and I felt that I was missing out. I really wanted to be part of this transition and help reduce our dependency on private gasoline cars. I thought long and hard to figure out how I could bring value into this space, another scooter operator wouldn't change the world as there were literally already hundreds of them. I realised that I had over 10 different apps to move around in Copenhagen and Malmö, and for me as a user it was a very complex and annoying experience. It dawned on me that no one had solved this problem yet, and this is where I could really have an impact, so I started working on it! Luckily my co-founder Bibi heard about the idea through mutual friends so we started talking and launched the company together last year. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? Everybody is so passionate about the fundamental problem that we’re trying to solve and the team has a relevant background from building momondo, from foundation to internationalisation and a finally $550 million acquisition by Booking Holdings. Just like we transformed the airline industry we’ve now set out to do the same in the shared mobility space. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? Probably work on another business idea, and hopefully do some more kitesurfing. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? User growth and user stickiness (our retention rate). We’re building Cogo to help our users, and we’re monitoring closely how new features are being received. Many of the features that we’re currently working on come from our users. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? We have the best operator coverage in the Nordics, were finalists as ‘newcomer of the year’ at Nordic Startups awards 2020 (and nominated again this year) and we have received a lot of great press coverage in Sweden, Denmark and even internationally. What’s most exciting is that Cogo has already been used in over 100 countries without any paid marketing! What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? Celebrities like Drew Barrymore seem to have a different train of thought to Magic Johnson; in fact, during the pandemic and started up a new venture. Drew Barrymore grew her lifestyle brand Startup Founders are Leading the Way through Rocky Waters I don't know about you, but as optimistic of a person I am, I'd dare say, we'll be moving into 'post-pandemic' anytime soon. Start(up) I co-founded with three other guys. It was an amazing experience. We were wildly successful in our first year with tens of millions of dollars in gross revenue, a scalable and stable platform, and a relatively small staff. GearLaunch Money poured in the door and we had an awful time finding quality talent in the competitive San Francisco market. We were hiring Java developers and we’d bring people in with 20 years of Java experience that couldn’t do simple programming. It was mind boggling. We struggled to come up with a process for hiring. This culminated with our first bad hire who only lasted a few months. We threw what we knew about hiring out the door and started over. While we were not able to fix the talent shortage nor solve all of our issues, we were able to build a process that accurately evaluates candidates. This saved a lot of pain, time and expense. Standing out Many career pages and job requests only talk about how cool a company is or define requirements that do not fit the job description. Written by HR or managers, there is a disconnect between what they say they are looking for and the actual position. We play games at company outings We have Hackathons We have great benefits We hire smart people It feels like that awkward moment when grandpa tries to give life advice to the kids and everyone just thinks he’s crazy… While those bullet points are worthy and expected, as a developer I’m more interested in companies that speak my language. They talk about what I will be working on and what the environment is like. This is not a recommendation, use what works for you. The point is that the right tool is important. Greenhouse Workable Recruiters have a tendency to refer people who match buzzwords. Career listing sites sell search engine functionality, so this tool is the obvious choice. This is actually a sub-optimal way to find the right people. Job seekers realized creating a resume with all the same buzzwords in the job posting gets them filtered to the top. As non-techies, might not understand the differences between skill sets or the opinionated nature of software engineers. We spend a lot of time evaluating and learning dozens of technologies. This encourages strong biases towards how we enjoy our time coding. recruiters technology A JavaScript engineer may be an expert in . Chances are they won’t be as excited to work for a company using because these approach similar problems from two different perspectives. Who’s hiring You will come in and pair program with one of the co-founders for 1–2 hours. You will be tasked with writing code as if it is your first day of work with us. We use IDEA, Guice, JAX-RS, Jackson, JUnit, Project Lombok. Many people didn’t know or research the technologies we mentioned. Occasionally, they would come prepared. This sounds like our screening process was too lenient, but it was a good indicator of a self-starter. Interview As soon as someone arrived, we show them around the office, offer food/drink and then sit down at a station. pair programming This is two monitors in mirrored mode, two keyboards, two trackpads. All connected to a single computer. Both people can type at the same time, increasing the interactivity. The supportive pair is there to help with any questions. GearLaunch processes a lot of credit cards and our interest is around this functionality. Consider your own business needs. Write stories and implement a project with tests. Begin with a simple feature and keep increasing complexity. Strip out the implementation details and use that as your basis. Implement an API to process a credit card transaction. Only accept cards that end in an odd number. The network is flaky, prevent duplicate charges on retries. The expectation is to code similar to the first day on the job. Implement RESTful endpoints using common data structures_,_ methodologies and database transactions. ( idempotency ) No coding on a wall, solving brain teasers or regurgitating algorithms. While these techniques work for a lot of companies, we felt it is more beneficial to use a real world simulation. Pair programming helps reduce typical interview stress because someone is helping. Hiring remotely? Use a shared editor to do live video chat coding. Evaluation is good. Asking for help is expected, because that is what you want from your co-workers. Knowing how to ask the right questions is great. Searching StackOverflow is desirable. Some struggle with transactions or idempotency and others get it right away. Writing tests first Just a few suggestions, pick what works for your company. Train people on how to host an interview. Strive for consistency with few bottlenecks. By the end of the session, we were able to make a quantitative decision. Encourage near misses to come back for another interview. People have a bad day or they improve over time. End(down) We were proud of the fact that almost everyone left feeling like it was one of their better interview experiences, regardless of success. The community is small, hiring is hard and we don’t want people talking sh*t. Go out for lunch. We spend 8+ hours a day with co-workers, sometimes more than our own families! If you don’t want to hang out for an hour in a social situation, would you want to spend time, under stress, in the workplace? Use an open mind, challenge yourself and your co-workers to think outside the box instead of just doing what everyone else is doing. Recently, I needed to encapsulate some of my utility code into a standalone NPM package. It had been a couple of years since I last worked on something similar, and I quickly realized that some things had changed. I encountered a few pitfalls along the way, which inspired me to write this article as a reference and guide. The Focus & Requirements This article focuses on optimizing the developer experience when using your library code as an NPM dependency. The implied tech stack includes: A host web app powered by React, bootstrapped using react-scripts
A library that also utilizes React
TypeScript for both the host app and the library The key requirements for seamless library integration, ensuring the best developer experience, are: The library should be consumable by a TypeScript-based host app
It should be possible to include the library locally via file:/path/to/the/library
The library should also be installable via a GitHub link
TypeScript compiler’s watch mode must function for the library I won’t be diving deep into TypeScript setup in this article. If you need assistance with that, feel free to refer to the tsconfig.json configurations in my repositories for both the host app and the library. Let’s get started! TypeScript Setup Let’s assume we have "outDir": "./dist" in our tsconfig.json. In this case, we need to add the following lines to our package.json: "main": "./dist/index.js",

    "my-lib": "file:../my-lib", However, after running the host app with npm start, you might encounter the dreaded Invalid hook call error: The 3rd point suggests that we might have more than one copy of React in the same app, which is exactly what's happening here — both the host app and the library have React installed. This can be easily resolved by moving React to the peerDependencies section of the library’s package.json: "peerDependencies": {
    "react": "^18.3.1" This informs the package manager that the library depends on React, which could potentially conflict with the host app’s dependencies. As a result, only a single copy of React should be included in the final bundle. NPM handles this by deduplicating the dependencies. Let’s verify whether the React package has been deduplicated using npm ls react: my-app@0.1.0 /Users/user/dev/my-app

If we run the host app again we are still going to see the same Invalid hook call error. The reason is that our library has been installed locally and the NPM handles local packages via symlinks, which are not deduped. There are several ways to solve this problem, one of which is npm-dedupe utility. However, I prefer not to use this approach, as it traverses the entire dependency tree and modifies it in multiple steps. This process can be quite heavy and time-consuming. Another, better way, is to tweak the webpack.config.js: resolve: {
