To spare you time reading, this post is for online buyers and sellers interested in a new emerging form of escrow - blockchain escrow. Because of somewhat nerdy descriptions and use of blockchain buzzwords, better if you already know what the blockchain is and how it works 😉 Still, if interested feel free to check even if you are an absolute beginner. A Brief Intro to Escrow Service Before we dive into the world of blockchain escrow, let's first review how a centralized, a.i. traditional, escrow is used. Later on, this helps us see the differences and similarities that centralized and , also known as blockchain escrow, may have. decentralized escrow So, if you have been long enough on this planet, you already know that an escrow service is often used for "something big that's worth a lot of money". Something like a Beverly Hills mansion, a supercar, a yacht, or the original Rolex Oyster that your grandpa used to wear (who knows?). In other words, you do not hand over the car keys or the family Rolex to another person. There's paperwork to be done before any purchase or sale occurs. There in the contract you and the buyer signs you outline the rules of the purchase agreement that the escrow makes sure are followed. Then, as the buyer sends the payment to the escrow bank account and it receives it, you send the keys/watch to the buyer. Once the quality is examined by the buyer, the escrow is instructed to release payment to your account. A blockchain escrow is similar in a way it also safeguards the payment while the deal is done, and then, sends it to your account. The key takeaway is that in the blockchain escrow multiple nodes must approve the transaction before it happens. That's where the "decentralized" part of it comes from. Not a single node is deemed more authoritative than the other, and all operations (later on about the types) are double-checked by the "peer nodes". But, does any blockchain can be used as an escrow? Not really. For a blockchain escrow service developers have to first , able to store both rules for how and when the deal is complete, and the money to be paid in the end. Now, as you are slowly piecing together what a blockchain escrow is, it's time to see how it works. How Does a Blockchain Escrow Work? At this point, you start wondering, how the blockchain and smart contracts come together as a blockchain escrow, right? In what way do they communicate and how connected they are? Well, once created and sent to the blockchain smart contracts actually live on it. So, every action that is requested by the escrow user (to receive or release the money, for example) must be approved by multiple network nodes. Such a verification process adds an additional layer of security to ensure that the contract is following its rules and no fraud is attempted. This may be the key reason why a blockchain escrow is a safer alternative to a traditional escrow service. The way a user, a smart contract, and a blockchain communicate is through code, and more specifically, smart contract calls and pre-determined functions. With that in mind, here's how it goes. A user makes a call to a contract, a.i. calls a specific function to execute. Blockchain nodes receive and confirm this operation. The function executes and brings the user expected results. Yet, the average user who may not be familiar with code may find building and integrating smart contracts with the blockchain difficult. On top of writing a smart contract code, you need a UI to make contract calls and a gateway connecting you to a specific blockchain network where requested transactions are confirmed. So, if you are a regular P2P marketplace user and not a full-blown developer, you need a blockchain escrow app or platform. It connects you to a smart contract and a blockchain network to request and confirm specific transactions without writing a line of code. I may have passed the technical test and the culture fit (let’s just assume that) but I admittedly performed badly at the whiteboard coding interviews. When I need to implement one that I didn’t use for a while, I just start researching. How much do these tests tell about a candidate anyway? even said: Someone In real life, you would rarely just whip up an off-the-cuff algorithm from memory in the middle of a coding session. You are almost always going to use an existing library, which has its own test suite, and has survived the scrutiny of other developers. The only world where you would actually need to be able to recall an algorithm would be a post-apocalyptic one, where the hard drives of all the computers connected to the internet were fried, and all copies of foundational academic papers and computer science textbooks had been reduced to ashes. My opinion tend to match the one of the aforementioned author although I like to believe that such a skill (being good at whiteboard interviews) is about having a set of very good to have other skills, soft and hard. Let’s sum up what this algorithm does: We check for each city in the cities array, we rotate the name and we match every combination with the accumulator value. If we find something we add the new city to the array containing the matches (with ) otherwise we just a new array containing our new city. Array.splice push Et voila’: All together now! . Get the Gist here but this is what came to my mind that day.(It’s complexity is quadratic while you may want to solve it with an algorithm that takes linear time O(n)). This solution is not the best one My actual whiteboard interview I started from the solution. I said, ok, I’m gonna need a reduce method. I immediately approached the board to write actual code without really knowing the plan. I did have an idea of the solution, pretty much the one I wrote in the previous chapter, but I didn’t it, I didn’t really it consistently to my poor interviewers. So I got lost in the code, I lost the the train of my thoughts several times, I also stumbled on syntax errors, in a mix of poor written pseudocode and actual code. There was no way to turn the tide at this point. A performance like this can make a lot of damage to the outcome of the interviews, especially if you let this affect the rest of the process on your side. articulate explain What should I do now Practice, practice, practice. Get a whiteboard, pick a problem and talk out-loud to the air and write, do that a lot. Practice the whiteboard interview, learn the routine. Your routine, any routine. Learn it like a song on the guitar, a card trick or whatever dangerous stunt with your skate. You need to prepare a speech, it’s like a presentation. It’s like a presentation with variables. A variable is the problem. I’ll go like this: I’ll spend some time analysing the requirements (1 min) I’ll formulate questions if necessary and get answers (3 min). I’ll pause and think of a direction to take (few min, don’t be afraid to stay silent for a while). I will propose initial solutions and get feedback from the interviewers (5 min). I will pause again and choose a solution (2 min). I will write pseudocode (5 min) I will test my pseudocode (5 min) I’ll finish by transforming the pseudocode into actual code. (until necessary) In around 30 min I will have solved the problem in a enjoyable and ordinated way.
