What’s better for a crypto investor’s ROI: building a portfolio alone or making decisions after a group discussion? The latest study by BDC Consulting finds that analyzing projects in-depth as a group can be a powerful way to reduce portfolio risks and maximize gains. An Innovative Gamified Approach to Investment Decisions Although crypto influencers constantly advise their followers to do their own research, many investors rely on advice given on YouTube and Twitter. Having to make investment decisions on one’s own can be overwhelming and even scary. However, the real question is whether one can be more profitable by selecting investment opportunities solo or after listening to the opinion of others. This question was addressed by BDC Consulting in their . new gamified study, Crypto-minded The experts used an innovative research tool called gamified focus groups. Each of the 22 investors (divided into four groups) was given 200 game tokens and descriptions of 10 crypto projects – real ones, but without the names. There were 40 different descriptions in 5 categories: Blockchain, Exchange, DeFi, Gaming, and Meme. The participants were asked to allocate the tokens in two portfolios: 100 tokens in a personal portfolio of 1 to 3 projects and 100 tokens in a common ‘investment fund’, to be formed after a group discussion. The researchers then calculated the ROI that each of the portfolios would have yielded to see if individual or group investment was more profitable. 49% vs 18% ROI: the effect of a group discussion The study's key insight is that group decision-making does impact profitability – and that investors recognize it as a highly valuable tool. The individual investment round yielded an average ROI of 18%. The discussion investment round led to a markedly higher ROI of 38% for the group portfolio. The increase in profitability was the highest for those who changed their original allocation choice after the discussion. They ‘earned’ 49% on their investment, while those who stuck to the original decisions ‘made’ only 18%. The participants acknowledged that the group discussion allowed them to explore some aspects of the projects they had initially neglected and reduce investment risks. The focus groups used two main algorithms to allocate the funds: Reliability first: 50% went to a reliable exchange or blockchain infrastructure project; 25-40% to a riskier but very promising DeFi or GameFi project; and the remaining 10-25% to a high-risk meme/gaming/NFT project. Growth first: up to 40% went to a viral meme or GameFi project, with the rest distributed evenly between reliable DeFi, exchange, and infrastructure projects. The 5 top project categories for 2022 and selection criteria Which types of projects are most attractive to investors in 2022? In the BDC Consulting study, the focus group participants named five: blockchain (L1 and L2) exchanges, memecoins, GameFi, DeFi. During the group round, BDC Consulting also identified the main factors that influence investors’ decisions: The team: ‘A good team is 50% of success’ Transparency about the development process Active development: ‘Community support, strong personalities, development according to the roadmap, emotional background surrounding the project’ Understanding the mechanics of the project Innovation By contrast, some features of a project make it unattractive to investors: Lack of an efficient way to solve the target user’s problem Anonymity and lack of transparency on behalf of the team Lack of well-known partnerships Similarity to other projects, lack of uniqueness The study shows that engaging investors in community discussions is a powerful persuasion technique that projects shouldn’t neglect. Finding the most relevant narrative for each investor – be it team transparency, partnerships, or something else – can be more effective than focusing on the ROI alone.

How to Increase Your Portfolio Returns by up to 30% By Making Investment Decisions as a Community

An important metric for the success of any startup with a token is free float. But can it be increased, for example, to $8 million from scratch just by building a vibrant community for English, Spanish, Turkish, and Chinese-speaking users? This case from BDC Consulting explores that possibility. Call To successfully solve the business problem (growth of free float), the project needed to create a community of users and maintain long-term activity so that they become brand advocates. The main difficulty: a ban on token advertising on behalf of the project. How we dealt with it . This is a trust factor for product users, investors, and media. For example, some tier-1 publications and major bloggers do not accept publications about a project if the community has less than ten thousand subscribers. The community is the core of any crypto project Therefore, we decided to create unofficial communities on behalf of enthusiasts who are interested in the token. Users were attracted through bloggers, and after filling out the form, the community manager conducted personal interviews. Despite the difficult path, we gathered the most active community of all local ones. In just 12 days, the increase in FF amounted to 1.3 million tokens. Intermediate results: More than 10 thousand subscribers in target geo. Free float over $2 million. x4 growth in the value of the token. Step 2: Develop Communities The community cannot exist without ambassadors who ardently defend the project, answer the questions of newcomers themselves, and share their experiences. Thanks to them: Up-to-date content is available. New subscribers make a faster decision to purchase a project token. After six months of the communities’ existence, we conducted in-depth interviews with the participants, which allowed us to change the strategy: The content plan was redesigned by 70%, in which the main user doubts were covered, and the project was covered from different angles. Changed the mechanics of contests. Began to hold AMA sessions. We launched outreach advertising so that users would contact the project outside the community more often. Issued publications in the media. We translated some materials into local languages. What should be done to maintain activity in communities: Feedback analytics to adjust the content plan. Conclusions and insights Premeditated activity within the community is key to its creation and development. Content plans for new and existing audiences should be different. The community manager should be an enthusiast who finds information about the project in the public domain. Creating a new local community gives a sharp increase in token metrics, and then the dynamics decrease. If the project’s goal is to increase token purchases, then the community should have a constant influx of new audiences. Because the current one has already put the token in its portfolio and can expand it, but only slightly. At a recent all-star round table, brought together Holochain executive director Mary Camacho, Chair DigiByte co-founder Hans Koning, Zelwyn Ecosystem CEO Nikolai Shkilev, Bits.Media creative director Alexandra Demidova, Sergei Simanovskiy from #CitizenCosmos, Crypto Corner host O.J. The experts discussed the future of the metaverse, GameFi, Web 3.0, and what’s in store for Bitcoin in 2022 – and while they often disagreed, the discussion brought out many valuable insights. Cryptovo YouTube channel 2022 will be the year of ‘baby steps’ for the metaverse The metaverse remains one of the biggest tech trends, though the round table participants expressed very different views over its meaning and short-term prospects. For O.J. Jordan, it’s an interactive virtual reality experience, and blockchain technology is what VR needs to finally take off. He predicted that the metaverse market could reach $800 billion by 2024, up over 10x from today’s $70bn. But for Mary Carracho, the metaverse space needs more time to figure itself out. While it will be very interesting to watch NFTs move across virtual spaces, many other technologies (besides blockchain) make up the metaverse. Evolving regulations will have an effect, too. Because of this complex interplay, 2022 will be mostly about ‘baby steps’ interspersed with ‘aha!’ moments as more brands realize that it’s worth entering this industry. To this, Hans Koning added that for many people, the best way to participate in the trend could be just owning assets, such as virtual land, without being personally active in the metaverse. He named Decentraland and OpenSea as projects with great potential, as well as MetaBrands, with which he works as an advisor. The GameFi audience to be split Moving on to GameFi – a narrative closely related to the metaverse – Alexandra Demidova said that she’s getting an enormous number of marketing requests from crypto gaming projects, but they all look the same. With several strong games already in the market, it’s unrealistic to expect a new Axie Infinity to emerge in the coming months. Looking into the future of GameFi, Mary Carracho expects a clear separation of the two audiences: those who play to make money and those who enjoy the games for their own sake, and for whom the financial aspect could actually be a disincentive. According to Paul Moukhine, big game development studios still haven’t grasped the essence of GameFi as gamified DeFi. If studios realize that it’s all about the economy, their entry can make big waves in the space. Are music NFTs the next big thing? Sergei Simanovsky brought up an interesting point: nobody, even industry veterans like himself, could have expected that NFTs would be the thing to drive blockchain adoption – and yet, that’s what happened. O.J. Jordan called the historical $69-million sale of Beeple’s collage at Christie’s an event that ‘shook the world’ – and predicted that music would be the next NFT frontier. Non-fungible tokens offer the direct ownership and royalty opportunities that artists have always needed. With NFTs, musicians can finally take back control over their earnings. At the same time, the experts noted that the NFT market is still in the speculative bubble stage - similar to the ICO hype of 2017-18 when many people ended by selling at a loss. A similar thing could happen with NFTs, though this doesn’t negate their transformative role. Web 3.0 and regulation Many think that a new, distributed web will replace the centralized internet we’re used to. But Mary Carracho stressed that until decentralized technology becomes as easy to use as centralized services, it will remain no more than a ‘playground’ for people who understand how to make money off it. Web 3.0 is all about privacy and the desire to own one’s data that stems from a deep-rooted mistrust in society. The desire for a self-sovereign identity will be the key issue in 2022, though the transition to a true Web 3.0 will be drawn-out because of the natural inertia of people and businesses. The evolution of blockchain regulation will be paramount for Web 3.0 – but here, the experts don’t expect any drastic moves in 2022. Regulatory ambiguity is likely to continue, with ‘semantic’ battles over the definition of utility tokens, for example. Interestingly, Hans Koning believes that the US regulators’ indecisive position creates a real risk that the States will miss out on the enormous opportunity and be leapfrogged by other, more crypto-friendly countries. We have to be ready for tighter restrictions across the board, though. Regulators dislike cryptocurrencies because of their excess volatility – but they also dislike stablecoins. Up to 80 countries are now looking into CBDCs (central bank digital currencies), and China is already rolling out the ‘digital yuan.’ Countries that launch CBDCs could move to ban or restrict crypto. Finally, the participants gave their Bitcoin predictions. O.J. Jordan said that $120k could be the peak for this cycle and that it can come in 2022. Nikolai Shkilev, too, hopes to see BTC at $100k. Ultimately, as Hans Kerner pointed out, there will always be someone calling for $20k and someone expecting $1 million, and the truth will almost certainly be somewhere in between. Blockchain Experts Share Predictions for the Metaverse, GameFi, and Web 3.0

Platforms like CoinMarketCap, Gemini, and Robinhood have reported a sharp increase in the percentage of female users, but little is known about , and the . These questions were answered for the first time in a of over 400 women from 28 countries that BDC Consulting conducted. what draws women to crypto how they pick assets, barriers they face survey 36.7% of women enter the crypto space thanks to a friend or colleague. The differences in investment decision-making between males and females have been the subject of many studies. For example, a showed that women are far more prone to take the advice of their spouse or parents before investing, while a revealed that men tend to be overconfident, relying on their own investment analysis skills. Is it the same for crypto? 2011 paper by Gaur Arti et al. 2001 work by Barber and Odean It seems so – at least when it comes to the initial introduction to crypto assets. 36.7% of the polled women said that someone from their immediate surroundings (a friend, a colleague, or a contact on social media) initially told them about crypto and advised them to try it. As a participant from Greece put it, “I was introduced to cryptocurrencies by accident through Facebook. A friend said, “Do you want me to send you a coin?” He went on and explained what sort of coin. And I said, “Well, this must be the future, and I don’t want to be left behind!” said that it was the constant talk of crypto in the media that pushed them to enter the space, while named ads as the main factor. Interestingly, only of women said that their own research of various investment vehicles led them to crypto. 17.7% 9.5% 15% These results hold an interesting opportunity for blockchain marketers. To attract a female audience, platforms should consider using women’s personal networks, perhaps even creating special female-centric communities in social media. Freedom as the best feature of cryptocurrencies When talking about the advantages of crypto, projects often stress its more technical aspects, such as decentralization, banking the unbanked, cheap cross-border transfers, censorship resistance, and so forth. However, the women polled by BDC Consulting stressed a more general trait of crypto: freedom in its many forms. For instance, they pointed out the ability to dispose of one’s finances, the feeling of financial freedom, independence from the employer and the joint family budget, entrepreneurship opportunities, etc. Once again, these insights can be valuable for marketing: platforms should explain to the potential female users and investors how their product can render them freer. The authors of the study stress that it’s important to focus on specific aspects, such as having full control of one’s finances, rather than on the abstract concept of freedom. Women are quite rational when picking assets Contrary to the common stereotype of women as irrational, most female crypto investors make decisions based on fundamentals, such as use case, market cap, team, and backing by funds. Only 25.9% said that frequent news mentions (‘hype’) are important, and just 16.3% named promotion by well-known personalities as a factor. For marketers, this means the importance of stressing a project’s objective strengths rather than getting it shilled by influencers. Projects should aim for more inclusive messaging The survey also included questions on the issues faced by women when investing in or trading crypto, as well as on the barriers they face when entering the industry. The answers hinted that it’s not some inherent complexity of blockchain products that is the problem, but rather how they are packaged and the fact that the communication style in the crypto community is heavily male-centered. Among the issues pointed out by the respondents: Website and ad-designs picture men, which sends a message that the products aren’t aimed at female users; here is an example from the Trust Wallet site: Excessive use of slang and technical lingo without any attempt to explain its meaning (HODL, nodes, rekt, bearwhales, etc.); In Telegram groups, women often feel uncomfortable due to flirty comments, being called ‘baby’, receiving inappropriate stickers, etc.; Offline crypto events are dominated by men (both speakers and guests); Women often don’t dispose of sufficient funds that they can independently invest (for example, because they have a joint account with their partner and have to justify their expenditures). If crypto platforms wish to attract a massive female audience, they should focus on creating clear tutorials without too much technical lingo, collaborating with female influencers, organizing communities and events for women, and making promotional materials and messaging more inclusive. Financial Freedom Attracts Women to Crypto

BDC Consulting held on Polkastarter in the past 6 months and found that buying tokens at an IDO and selling them an hour later on Uniswap can yield over 2,000% in profits, while selling after a few weeks can increase the ROI to 2,700%. However, the long-term survival of the IDO model is under question. analyzed 39 IDO projects Crypto fundraising, reinvented (yet again) The crypto industry is incredibly inventive when it comes to fundraising. Almost every year, the community gets excited about a new investment model, builds a massive hype around it, ends up disillusioned, and moves on to the next idea. We’ve gone through ICO, STO, IEO – and now it’s the turn of IDO, or Initial DEX Offering. IDOs are intended as a decentralized and transparent alternative to IEOs, which were and often . Whereas before investors followed IEO announcements on major launchpads like Huobi Prime and Okex Jumpsmart, now it’s all about Polkastarter, Uniswap, BSCPad, and Duckstarter. accused of price manipulations resulted in huge losses for investors Crypto startups like IDOs because they are far cheaper than an IEO: you still need to supply initial liquidity to the DEX, but there is no exchange fee to pay and no due diligence. You can even run an IDO on several DEXes if you like – something that’s not possible with centralized exchanges. However, a fundraising model is solid only if it yields real returns for investors – as opposed to quick gains for speculators or scammers. BDC Consulting conducted research to understand how much one can really earn on an IDO, if it’s really so important to get in at the very start, and when one should sell the tokens to maximize returns. Polkastarter accounts for 26% of the recent IDOs, with IDO prices up to 50 times lower than listing prices DEX is built on Polkadot and has emerged as one of the largest IDO launchpads. It owes its popularity to its low swapping fees and cross-chain token pools, which allow users to trade tokens issued on different blockchains. Out of the 54 recent IDOs listed on (some of them in the ICO category, but on IDO launchpads), 14 (26%) were held on Polkastarter, as opposed to 6 each on Duckstarter and Balancer, 5 on Poolz, 3 on BSCpad, and 2 on Ignition. For each of them, the team confronted the IDO price, listing price, all-time-high, and the price as of March 30. have looked into 39 projects CoinList To understand the returns on an IDO, it’s worth saying a few words on how Polkastart IDOs work: 1) Every IDO pool has a maximum allocation, so the amount of funds that can be raised is capped – for example, $500k; 2) There is a limit on how many tokens each participant can buy, such as $300 or $500 worth of ETH; 3) Users have to be whitelisted and pass a KYC by submitting a copy of their ID and a selfie; 4) The number of whitelisted addresses usually exceeds the number of IDO allocations, so tokens are secured on a first come, first served basis (or sometimes using a lottery mechanics); 5) The IDO is scheduled for a specific time, such as 4:00 PM UTC, and lasts one hour and a half, though the pool usually sells out faster. The IDO price is fixed. 6) After an hour after the start of the IDO or once the pool is sold out (i.e. the fundraising cap is reached), the token is listed on Uniswap and/or Binance Smart Chain. The listing price can be many times higher than the IDO price. In the BDC Consulting study, the project with the largest divergence (51 times) was TosDis, offered for $1.25 at the IDO and listed at $115.52. 7) Once the IDO ends, the buyers can claim their tokens and sell them on Uniswap if they wish. Study findings: IDOs on Polkastarter yield x23 – and the trendline is rising Average listing returns for IDO investors: +2,347%. Across the 39 projects under study, buying tokens at the IDO price and selling them on Uniswap immediately after listing would have earned an investor over x23. However, this number is purely indicative, because in some cases there is a 20-30 minute gap between the listing and the moment when IDO investors can claim their tokens. To this you should add the 5-10 minutes required for the claim to be processed on the Ethereum blockchain. Private investors (if there are any) can claim the tokens earlier, giving them an advantage. As a result, the price at which an IDO participant can sell their tokens on Uniswap can be quite different from the listing price. Highest ROI at listing: 9,191% (Polkamon). The project with the highest listing-to-IDO price ratio was Polkamon, whose $32.52 listing price was 92.91 times higher than its $0.35 IDO price. Thus, the users who participated in the IDO and sold their PMON on Uniswap immediately earned an ROI of 9.191%. Lowest ROI at listing: 67% (eMoney Public). The +67% ROI of eMoney Public looks modest compared to the thousands of percentage points yielded by other IDOs, but it is still much higher than the ROI of investing in Bitcoin or Ethereum over the same period. However, this fact points only to the level of hype surrounding IDOs rather than to specific merits of IDO tokens. Average returns as of March 30: 2,761%. As it turned out, holding tokens for a few weeks can yield more than selling them immediately as they are listed on Uniswap. IDO investors with ‘strong hands’ made an average of x27 on their contribution. Not all investors were that lucky, however: some projects experience massive price declines after the listing. For instance, FIRE dropped from $10.28 to just $0.554, while DAOVentures dropped from $5.88 to $1.59. Highest IDO ROI as of March 30: 11,060% (SuperFarm). Those who bought SuperFarm tokens at the IDO on Feb 23 and held on to them until March 30 earned a whooping 11,060% on their investment as the token appreciated from $0.025 to $2.79. It’s interesting to note that the ROI on IDO tokens has been rising. This could indicate that investing in IDOs will remain profitable in the coming months : Image: BDC Consulting Joining after the listing yields 65 times less profits than participating in IDOs In a stark contrast with IDO investors, those who bought tokens on Uniswap once they were listed earned an average of 36%, or 65 times less than those who joined the IDO. Granted, 36% in a couple of months is still a great result, but this average value hides vast differences between the winners and the losers. The project that enjoyed the highest price increase between listing and March 30 was Ethernity (+704%), while the worst performer among the 39 projects in the study was DAOventures with -73%. Decentralized doesn’t mean fair: the 3 issues plaguing IDOs IDOs are not magic money machines – nothing in crypto is. For every investor who makes x23 on Polkastarter, there are many who end up in the red. It’s crucial to realize that the IDO model is fraught with problems, the three most serious ones being the following: Extreme volatility. In an IEO, the price is fixed for the duration of the offering and only starts to fluctuate after the listing, which happens some days after. But in an IDO, a token is listed on Uniswap as soon as the original pool sells out. From this point on, the price swings every time a trade is made, because the AMM algorithm adjusts it depending on the supply in the liquidity pool. Thus, the project team loses control over the price minutes after the IDO begins. Front-running. As there is no order book and no matching engine, traders can get their transaction processed faster by setting higher gas fees. It works, but it drives up the average gas fee in the network, negatively affecting the rest of Ethereum users. In this sense, you could say that IDOs are wasteful – real gas-guzzlers, like cars in the 60’s. An even more cunning scheme is using bots to buy lots of tokens at the very start of an IDO, while they are cheap, then spam the blockchain to prevent other users from buying them until the price rises – at which point the bot offloads the tokens. Rug pull scams. Running IDO scams is scaringly easy, because users often forget to double-check that liquidity is locked. Scammers list tokens that mimic a highly-anticipated project, wait until swapping gets going and the price rises, then . withdraw all the liquidity from the pool that in early 2021, IDOs easily outperformed Bitcoin, Ethereum, and even BNB in terms of ROI. However, this fact points only to the level of hype surrounding IDOs rather than to any specific merits of IDO tokens. The study by BDC Consulting revealed The conclusion that emerged from the study is that one should try to get whitelisted and join the IDO and then sell the tokens right after listing. While the average return on the tokens held for a few weeks after the listing is higher (+2,761% vs +2,347%), there is a risk that the price will drop. Of course, this investment strategy can be damaging to the projects themselves, because it favors speculation, not long-term investment. Yield farming is one way to encourage IDO buyers to hold tokens in the long term, but it’s unsustainable, as . As users sell their rewards, the market gets flooded with tokens, and the price eventually drops. Vitalik Buterin himself pointed out If the IDO model is to succeed in the long term, project founders should either discourage token dumping by setting listing prices closer to the IDO price, or look for more sustainable ways to retain investors. Polkastarter IDOs: Crypto Fundraising, Reinvented (yet again) 

2020 is proving to be the year of stablecoins. From $5.3 billion in January, the overall market capitalization of the stablecoin market beyond $13 billion as investors rushed to protect their capital from the effects of the global economic crisis. But why are some stablecoins growing much faster than the overall market? skyrocketed 1) DAI - the fuel for yield farming Market cap: +239% since July 1 (currently $432m) Best investment vehicles: complex yield farming with COMP and BAL (up to 20% APR) The key reason for the surge in the supply of DAI is yield farming – the latest craze to take over the DeFi industry. Yield farming (or liquidity mining) means earning rewards for adding liquidity to a DeFi protocol. Farmers come up with ever more convoluted schemes, locking up one asset to get a loan in another, lock that up on a different platform to obtain a third type of asset etc. For instance, one can add ETH to Compound to get DAI and mine Maker's COMP tokens, then deposit the DAI in a liquidity pool on Balancer to also farm BAL. Or you could even trade your DAI for USDC, deposit that as collateral on Compound to generate more DAI and farm even more COMP. In the past couple of months, two major DeFi projects released their farmable tokens: COMP (Compound) and BAL (Balancer). Instead of Cadiz, she had to content herself with Cromer. To that place her aunt Shaw and the Lennoxes were bound. They had all along wished her to accompany them, and, consequently, with their characters, they made but lazy efforts to forward her own separate wish. Perhaps Cromer was, in one sense of the expression, the best for her. She needed bodily strengthening and bracing as well as rest. Among other hopes that had vanished, was the hope, the trust she had had, that Mr. Bell would have given Mr. Thornton the simple facts of the family circumstances which had preceded the unfortunate accident that led to Leonards’ death. Whatever opinion—however changed it might be from what Mr. Thornton had once entertained, she had wished it to be based upon a true understanding of what she had done, and why she had done it. It would have been a pleasure to her: would have given her rest on a point on which she should now all her life be restless, unless she could resolve not to think upon it. It was now so long after the time of these occurrences, that there was no possible way of explaining them save the one which she had lost by Mr. Bell’s death. She might just submit, like many another, to be misunderstood; but, though reasoning herself into the belief that in this hers was no uncommon lot, her heart did not ache the less with longing that some time—years and years hence—before he died at any rate, he might know how much she had been tempted. She thought that she did not want to hear that all was explained to him, if only she could be sure that he would know. But this wish was vain, like so many others; and when she had schooled herself into this conviction, she turned with all her heart and strength to the life that lay immediately before her, and resolved to strive and make the best of that. She used to sit long hours upon the beach, gazing intently on the waves as they chafed with perpetual motion against the pebbly shore,—or she looked out upon the more distant heave, and sparkle against the sky, and heard, without being conscious of hearing, the eternal psalm, which went up continually. She was soothed without knowing how or why. Listlessly she sat there, on the ground, her hands clasped round her knees, while her aunt Shaw did small shoppings, and Edith and Captain Lennox rode far and wide on shore and inland. The nurses, sauntering on with their charges, would pass and repass her, and wonder in whispers what she could find to look at so long, day after day. And when the family gathered at dinner-time, Margaret was so silent and absorbed that Edith voted her moped, and hailed a proposal of her husband’s with great satisfaction, that Mr. Henry Lennox should be asked to take Cromer for a week, on his return from Scotland in October. But all this time for thought enabled Margaret to put events in their right places, as to origin and significance, both as regarded her past life and her future. Those hours by the seaside were not lost, as any one might have seen who had had the perception to read, or the care to understand, the look that Margaret’s face was gradually acquiring. Mr. Henry Lennox was excessively struck by the change. “The sea has done Miss Hale an immense deal of good, I should fancy,” said he, when she first left the room after his arrival in their family circle. “She looks ten years younger than she did in Harley Street.” “That’s the bonnet I got her!” said Edith, triumphantly. “I knew it would suit her the moment I saw it.” “I beg your pardon,” said Mr. Lennox, in the half-contemptuous, half-indulgent tone he generally used to Edith. “But I believe I know the difference between the charms of a dress and the charms of a woman. No mere bonnet would have made Miss Hale’s eyes so lustrous and yet so soft, or her lips so ripe and red—and her face altogether so full of peace and light.—She is like, and yet more,”—he dropped his voice,—“like the Margaret Hale of Helstone.” From this time the clever and ambitious man bent all his powers to gaining Margaret. He loved her sweet beauty. He saw the latent sweep of her mind, which could easily (he thought) be led to embrace all the objects on which he had set his heart. He looked upon her fortune only as a part of the complete and superb character of herself and her position; yet he was fully aware of the rise which it would immediately enable him, the poor barrister, to take. Eventually he would earn such success, and such honours, as would enable him to pay her back, with interest, that first advance in wealth which he should owe to her. He had been to Milton on business connected with her property, on his return from Scotland; and with the quick eye of a skilled lawyer, ready ever to take in and weigh contingencies, he had seen that much additional value was yearly accruing to the lands and tenements which she owned in that prosperous and increasing town. He was glad to find that the present relationship between Margaret and himself, of client and legal adviser, was gradually superseding the recollection of that unlucky, mismanaged day at Helstone. He had thus unusual opportunities of intimate intercourse with her, besides those that arose from the connection between the families. Margaret was only too willing to listen as long as he talked of Milton, though he had seen none of the people whom she more especially knew. It had been the tone with her aunt and cousin to speak of Milton with dislike and contempt; just such feelings as Margaret was ashamed to remember she had expressed and felt on first going to live there. But Mr. Lennox almost exceeded Margaret in his appreciation of the character of Milton and its inhabitants. Their energy, their power, their indomitable courage in struggling and fighting; their lurid vividness of existence, captivated and arrested his attention. When they returned to town, Margaret fulfilled one of her sea-side resolves, and took her life into her own hands. Before they went to Cromer, she had been as docile to her aunt’s laws as if she were still the scared little stranger who cried herself to sleep that first night in the Harley Street nursery. But she had learnt, in those solemn hours of thought, that she herself must one day answer for her own life, and what she had done with it; and she tried to settle that most difficult problem for woman, how much was to be utterly merged in obedience to authority, and how much might be set apart for freedom in working. Mrs. Shaw was as good-tempered as could be; and Edith had inherited this charming domestic quality; Margaret herself had probably the worst temper of the three, for her quick perceptions and over-lively imagination made her hasty, and her early isolation from sympathy had made her proud: but she had an indescribable childlike sweetness of heart, which made her manners, even in her rarely wilful moods, irresistible of old; and now, chastened even by what the world called her good fortune, she charmed her reluctant aunt into acquiescence with her will. So Margaret gained the acknowledgment of her right to follow her own ideas of duty. “Only don’t be strong-minded,” pleaded Edith. “Mamma wants you to have a footman of your own; and I’m sure you’re very welcome, for they’re great plagues. Only to please me, darling, don’t go and have a strong mind; it’s the only thing I ask. Footman or no footman, don’t be strong-minded.” “Don’t be afraid, Edith. I’ll faint on your hands at the servants’ dinner-time, the very first opportunity; and then, what with Sholto playing with the fire, and the baby crying, you’ll begin to wish for a strong-minded woman, equal to any emergency.” “And you’ll not grow too good to joke and be merry?” “Not I. I shall be merrier than I have ever been, now I have got my own way.” “And you’ll not go a figure, but let me buy your dresses for you?” “Indeed I mean to buy them for myself. You shall come with me if you like; but no one can please me but myself.” “Oh! I was afraid you’d dress in brown and dust-colour, not to show the dirt you’ll pick up in all those places. I’m glad you’re going to keep one or two vanities, just by way of specimens of the old Adam.” “I am going to be just the same, Edith, if you and my aunt could but fancy so. Only as I have neither husband nor child to give me natural duties, I must make myself some, in addition to ordering my gowns.” In the family conclave, which was made up of Edith, her mother, and her husband, it was decided that perhaps all these plans of hers would only secure her the more for Henry Lennox. They kept her out of the way of other friends who might have been eligible sons or brothers; and it was also agreed that she never seemed to take much pleasure in the society of any one but Henry, out of their own family. The other admirers, attracted by her appearance or the reputation of her fortune, were swept away, by her unconscious smiling disdain, into the paths frequented by other beauties less fastidious, or other heiresses with a larger amount of gold. Henry and she grew slowly into closer intimacy; but neither he nor she were people to brook the slightest notice of their proceedings.
