In the venture capital world, things are not easy nowadays. According to , dealmaking activity continues at meager levels–$73 billion compared to over $105 billion last year–accentuating the declining trend that has asphyxiated the market in recent months. Pitchbook The report highlights one important reason behind this extended downturn–the lack of exits, which means that venture capital funds are still not receiving the returns they expect. Hence, this affects how much additional capital they are willing to deploy. This means that, for startups that are actively looking to fundraise, the prospects of succeeding can be dismal. Due to the tough situation in the market, many startups nowadays need to start looking for funds via cold outreach, since they have exhausted their immediate circle and contacts and couldn’t raise the money they were looking for. However, it doesn’t need to be that hard. Recently, we were helping a cleantech project find investors. We exhausted our current investors database, and decided to start with our cold outreach strategy. Surprisingly or not, we received an overwhelmingly positive number of responses from investors that we didn’t know before. Even if the market is bearish, there are still investors who are willing to look at new projects, and who have the budget to fund promising initiatives. The lesson from this is that the possibility of securing funds through cold outreach is latent, it just needs to be addressed strategically. However, if you want to reach out to investors you don’t know, we still suggest trying to get intros to the investor, as it is still the shortest way before going “cold.” 1. First, do the groundwork Many founders make the mistake of sending unsolicited proposals to investors without considering their sectors of interest. Cold outreach has a higher rate of failure when it is not targeted, which means that we need to carefully select our audience. If we have a cleantech proposal, then, we need to segment our search accordingly. Once we’ve identified who our prospective investors are, we need to effectively communicate with them. This means that our initial email should address them by name and acknowledge them. With so much automated spam content out there, this increases the odds that our email will stand out. Our initial email should be brief and concise. Ideally, it should not ask for investment outright, but rather, seek advice and talk about the company’s fundraising plans. Start talking about the investor and not about yourself. Share what you’ve learned about their background, and why you are writing to them (‘Since you invest in cleantech, we thought it might be interesting for you to look at…’). Consider including key questions like: Would you like to stay in touch when we raise funds? What do you think about our product? The irony here is that if the investor is interested, they might offer money right away. But if they don’t, you already have a lead for future rounds. By understanding what a particular investor is interested in, you will know when the time is right to approach them again. 2. Find your first investor If investors perceive you as a company that has unsuccessfully sought out investments for two years, your chances of raising capital automatically dwindle. Conversely, if you already have investors on board, this shifts their psychological state of mind in your favor, as it triggers their fear of missing out and reinforces the idea that your startup is worth investing in. Therefore, dedicate your energies to finding that initial investor that can tip the scales in your favor. Until you find such an investor (unless you are completely sure that you are ready and have very high chances to find one very soon) start by asking for advice rather than money, as mentioned above. Then, you can tell additional investors, “We already have investors committed, you have a month to decide.” This approach can help you to secure the funds that you need within your timeframe. 3. Choose VIP individuals People like to feel seen and acknowledged, and investors are no exception. Therefore, carefully curate a list of investors that you would like to approach, and design a tailored strategy to connect with them. This can be done by writing individual letters and referencing articles the potential investor has written, some of their posts on social media, or other publicly available information that resonates with you as a founder and your company’s mission. To ensure that you maximize your possibilities of success with your chosen list, remember to identify those investors who have already invested in your industry. You can leverage platforms like Crunchbase to explore this. Once you have between 10 and 20 specific investors, here’s an initial letter you can send: “Hello, Robert, I read your article. I see you conduct a lot of research in this area. Therefore, I’m interested in what you think about our product, and I’d like to share more about our startup with you. Your feedback and advice would be very valuable.” This approach opens up the door for further rapport to be developed. 4. Look for mentorship Many investors were founders once, so they have gone through what you are going through right now. This is why many of them love to mentor new entrepreneurs, and they are willing to spend a few hours talking to them about their projects. Capitalize on this. If you connect with an investor with whom you envision a potentially productive relationship in the long term, ask them if they would like to be your mentor. From our experience, 65% of the investors we talked to responded positively to these requests. In this regard, it is important to take a non-transactional approach. If you connect with a potential investor only when you need to raise funds, and neglect the relationship otherwise, they are most likely to feel used and shut down the opportunity of investing in the future. Mentoring keeps the connection alive, and it can seamlessly lead to the investor offering money for the company. 5. Don’t ask for too much Remember that the more money an investor puts into your venture, the higher the return expectations will be. Therefore, be mindful of this when valuing your startup. It is considerably better to ask for a smaller ticket per investor, but have a lot of people interested in those tickets. This way, you can say that you are oversubscribed, which will highly boost your image among the investor community, and create the perception that you are in high demand. Additional tips Once you start reaching out to potential investors, you can expect a response rate of around 10%. Therefore, if your metrics are lower, consider whether you are segmenting your audience adequately. For example, if only 2% of prospects respond, you might be reaching out to the wrong people, or your message may not be structured adequately. Revise both. Many founders often ask about how many emails they should send. My response would be to send as many as you can handle, but keep in mind that you need to respond within a working day. This will show that you’re serious about what you’re doing. If an investor does not respond, feel free to send a follow-up. Personally, I send up to five follow-ups. In the fifth one, I am very brief, and usually only says: “Final follow-up.” This can trigger them to respond, and if I still don’t hear back, I move on. Final thoughts Even in the current market where VC is at a lower level than it used to be, cold outreach works. Since we started doing it, we have connected with over 500 investors who are interested in talking to startups that are referred to by us. This success has been possible because we have followed the steps outlined above. By targeting investors by industry and stage, and studying their profiles before reaching out, we have highly increased our response rate. Therefore, don’t be afraid. People are investing, and there is capital available. It all depends on who and how you ask.

The added benefit of using decentralized technology is that every share would be executed as a smart contract on the Layer 2 solution. By creating a tokenized system it would allow greater decentralized control over the operation and avoid potential IPO under traditional structures should this be the consensus. There would be future opportunities to tokenize each share and create decentralized autonomous organizations per land asset acquired. The overall approach creates a positive feedback cycle where planetary conservation generates returns via natural capital assets appreciating in value as the land restores and institutional and retail investors are rewarded whilst enabling the work to pay for itself over time by aligning incentives through carbon sequestration and sustainable business. He bought an island in Seychelles in 1962 and for 50 years spent the remainder of his life along with his own ‘Man Friday’ to re-introduce the island’s natural flora and fauna that had been destroyed through tourism and trade. The type of thoughtful conservation, regeneration, and rewilding of wildlife and the natural environment was achieved by a singular, committed vision to achieve and deliver a vision like Brendon’s but on a scale that can have not only a massive positive impact on the planet but on people, using technology. Big tech and industry events are designed to help innovators meet their potential clients, partners, and investors. With the right approach, these opportunities can help founders achieve their goals in fundraising, sales, and marketing. However, participating in these events can be a heavy burden on an early-stage startup’s budget, so it’s crucially important to invest in them wisely. Quite often industry events can be quite a hit and miss: while some of the most popular events may not result in closed deals, an accidental encounter in a cafeteria at a small niche conference can help bring in a million-dollar lead. Nevertheless, some practical steps can be taken to maximise the effect of a startup’s presence without spending excessive budgets on exhibiting. As Head of Communications in our Netherlands-based HealthTech startup MediXSpace, I have been in charge of overseeing our presence at several big industry events picked by the founders. Throughout this journey, we’ve learned from some of our mistakes the hard way, but also made a handful of useful discoveries that helped us compensate for the losses. Having spent over $80K on exhibiting and speaking at a variety of regional and global events for innovators, we have accumulated some advice on improving the ratio between the money spent and the results achieved. Tip 1. Put Together Your Event Calendar There are hundreds (if not thousands!) of events out there that could be beneficial to your startup. Choosing the ones that are really worth your time and effort may be a challenge, so here are a few ways to narrow down your list and prioritise it – prepare your Excel sheet (or other planning software of your choice) and do the following: ✅ Start with a generic Google search to get some idea of the must-attend events: look up the biggest tech and startups events of the year, and don’t forget industry-specific events (HealthTech, CleanTech, Cyber Security, etc). Once you’re done looking through tech events, research non-tech events that are still related to your field. For example, if you develop a HealthTech solution, consider researching medical events and see if there are opportunities to exhibit with a tech product. ✅ Explore Eventbrite and similar platforms: sometimes you can find some interesting events that are not always featured in popular ratings. What you will most likely find there is some niche startup pitching and networking events – those are small gems that can help you make valuable connections for much less money (sometimes even for free!) ✅ Record these events in your spreadsheet including the most important details such as dates, locations, participation fees, and attending audience ✅ Mark the ones that look most interesting to you (e.g. if there’s the largest exposure to your target clients) ✅ Mark the ones that are happening in your region and therefore might be the easiest to attend In our case, we allocated most of our budgets to the two biggest events in HealthTech and cancer care (HiMSS 2022 and ASCO 2022) and the largest global startup conference – Web Summit. We also took advantage of a few smaller startup pitching events and healthtech conferences as individual attendees. Remember that no free event is actually 100% free: it always requires your time at the least. So invest it wisely. Tip 2. Learn From Other Startups’ Experience Before signing up for any events, you can always look up what other fellow innovators have written about them. Big startup conferences such as Web Summit or Slush often get reviewed by tech enthusiasts who have given it a go. Certainly, it’s always important that these experiences can be very unique to their authors, so it’s best to read a few reports and compare before drawing any conclusions. Such research also helps get a better idea of what the events are like and learn a few strategies to maximise the practical results of your presence. In our case, we found whole Twitter threads with tips on making connections, preparing and even dressing for the events! Don’t forget to check if the event outcomes covered in such reviews match your goals. If you are looking for industry clients, an event targeted at startup fundraising may not quite be worth your time – however brilliant it may seem from the feedback. Look for specific points addressing the general attendance, the audience and its geography, and other factors that matter to your agenda. Tip 3. Look For Startup-Friendly Packages While startup events may naturally be expected to offer discounted exhibitor packages for early-stage startups, it’s not always obvious that bigger industry events may be offering such options, too. Investing in a full-scale booth at a trade show can cost a fortune (think $10.000+ for the booth space only, and at least just as much for furnishing it!), but quite often these shows have a special startup area with kiosks offered at a much more budget-friendly price ($5000+ for a fully furnished option). If you only need a small desk and a screen for showcasing your technology to potential clients, there’s really no need to splash the cash on a fancy booth – spare these budgets on more events and marketing activities. Moreover, if you are specifically looking for investors, and you know the event is likely to be attended by a few, there’s a much higher chance to encounter them in a startup area than anywhere else. If you are looking to partner up with big companies in your sector or even get acquired, it’s also easier to be spotted in a designated area where they will be specifically looking for young innovations. We made a huge mistake by trying to come across as a mature digital technology provider at HiMSS and going for a proper 10x20 booth: the total budget for our participation in the event – including the logistics – exceeded $65K, with over $35K spent on the booth and its refurbishment only. We could have spent approximately ⅓ of that budget on a startup park package and still gained relevant, startup-oriented leads. Tip 4. Think If You Really Need to Exhibit Sometimes you don’t need a booth at all. As long as you’re at the event actively making connections and engaging in dialogues, your presentation of your startup may be even more effective than a whole booth with tired team members with a smile glued to their faces. There are many big tech events that can be 100% free to attend (like London Tech Week or Arab Health in Dubai) – so why not make use of them without any organisational commitment? This strategy will serve you well if you are really good at networking, or you’ve got someone who is onboard. You will have to walk around and initiate the dialogue with people. A lot of people. But the good news is – conversations are free. Tip 5. Apply Early This is just a friendly reminder that the quicker you decide on your participation in the selected events, the more likely you are to benefit from the early bird rates. Not just for exhibiting, but for the housing and transportation as well – and these expenses tend to be the heftiest. Subscribe to your favourite event pages months in advance, so you don’t receive any newsletters with discount codes and sales kickoff news. Tip 6. Look For Side Events Experienced tech enthusiasts often say that the most important deals are sealed in the bars and cafes around the convention centres rather than at the events themselves. Believe it or not, what’s true is that every big conference has multiple networking activities going on alongside. These events offer a great opportunity to connect with the right people in a more informal environment – particularly those that can only be accessed by invitation. Here are some ways to find them: ✅ Once again, browse through Eventbrite to see if there is anything related happening during the days of the conference ✅ Do the same with Facebook (search by the conference name and see what comes up) ✅ Ask other fellow entrepreneurs that are also going ✅ Be sociable and friendly at the conference and keep your schedule flexible – you might get invited to closed parties for selected guests (e.g. top executives and investors) if you are genuinely interesting and nice to people around! Bonus point: if you haven’t found any specific events, observe the locations around and see where everybody’s hanging out. Join the crowd and enjoy networking for free as much as you like. Tip 7. Prepare and Refresh Your Pitching & Marketing Kit When you connect with valuable leads at the event, it’s always best to reach out immediately before they forget who you are. Be prepared to fire your pitch deck into their mailbox a few hours after you’ve met – so you’d want to make sure it’s on point! A brief checklist to have at hand for efficient networking purposes: ✅ A short blurb about your startup (a paragraph describing what your company does) ✅ A short description of each of your products ✅ An up-to-date pitch deck (for investors) ✅ A detailed product presentation (for clients) And remember: send your follow-up emails fast. You might even consider having a couple of generic email drafts to edit and send out quickly as needed. Tip 8.  Establish Connections in Advance It’s true that at some events you might be able to catch the keynote speakers after their sessions. But the more prestigious the conference, the higher the profile of the speaker, the more likely you will be competing with many more guests. Instead, start building your relationship with the key contacts you need far ahead of the event. Add them on LinkedIn and/or Twitter and engage with their posts. Make sure you post relevant industry content with your thoughts and insights on your page, so you build your reputation in their eyes as someone genuinely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject rather than yet another wannabe entrepreneur trying to solve irrelevant problems with an irrelevant product (and they indeed do get a lot of inquiries from such characters!). The same goes for investors: the worst thing you can do is stalk them near the investor lounge to talk about your startup. A bit of neutral friendly interaction on professional social media intruding into their inbox and private space will make them much more open to further dialogue. Such measures will help you get in touch with the desired contacts and fill your calendar with useful meetings long before you hit the exhibition floor, making your commitment to visit the event already worth it. before Tip 9. Explore Around Onsite (Including Your Competition) Staying clung to your booth in a naive hope that you’ll have visitors flocking to see your solutions is highly unproductive. Ideally, you should have a colleague accompany you, and take turns in staying at your location and walking around to explore other booths and interacting with guests. Research the list of exhibitors in advance and make a list of those whom you want to visit: those might be your potential clients, partners, and… Competitors. Industry events are a great way to get first-hand knowledge of your competitors’ solutions and even see a demo – so take advantage of it! Tip 10. Engage In Conversations and Provoke them Don’t be afraid to talk to people in every environment. Initiate small talk in cafeteria queues, come and talk to people at their booths, ask strangers about their companies (which are usually typed on their badges) – all these people are here to make connections, just as you are. You never know where your next conversation will take you! If initiating contacts is not quite your thing (introverts can surely relate!), there are a couple of tricks to provoke them: for example, you can wear branded merchandise that can cause people’s curiosity – with unusual design (e.g. glowing LED backpacks with your logo), catchy slogans or something as simple as “Ask me about… [insert the problem you are solving or just your product’s name]”. Another way is to engage in different activities like prize draws, games, round tables and so on – wherever you see a crowd doing something, join in and use your chance to meet new people.

Many things that we do on this planet eventually generate the greenhouse gases that constitute the growing carbon footprint that can no longer be ignored. As governments are actively seeking ways to introduce effective measures against the threatening pace of climate change, the investors’ interest in the cleantech sector increases. The rise of green tech has inspired many entrepreneurs and scientists to step forward with innovative solutions that have the potential of reversing the damage that humanity has made to Planet Earth. As the goal of reaching “Net Zero” by 2050 still remains miraculous, technology seems to be our main hope for positive change. What Can Be Done to Reduce Carbon Footprint? ✅ Develop green air travel technologies Aviation accounts for up to 2-3% of carbon dioxide emissions. It’s much less than the amount coming from electricity or agriculture, yet these figures are much more significant than they may seem: thanks to the pandemic, the overall amount of emissions in 2020 dropped by a few hundred million tons. As since then we’ve got back to full-scale traveling, it’s pointless to hope for a reduction in air travel in the near future – so the only way to deal with it is to make it more sustainable. It’s highly unlikely that we will have access to zero-emissions air travel in the near future, but the foundation for developing such options has been set. In the future, we are likely to see more aviation companies switching to sustainable biofuel, an increasingly growing number of eclectic jets, and possibly hydrogen-powered planes. Startups to watch: Sylphaero France Country: 2020 Founding year: The company focuses on facilitating the adoption of alternative engines in aviation by developing electric batteries, propulsion systems, solar cells, and the actual engines that efficiently convert electricity into heat. What they do: Tessomo Technologies Ireland Country: 2018 Founding year: While biofuel may seem like a great alternative to traditional fossil fuels, its production may easily result in an uncompensated amount of CO2 – thus completely neutralizing the positive effect of its adoption. To fight this problem, Tessomo Technologies have introduced a solution for transforming recycled waste into liquid fuel. What they do: ZeroAvia : Britain / USA Country 2017 Founding year: This startup has already raised $140 for developing alternative flying technologies based on renewable hydrogen-powered aviation. Finally, how do we make the electric vehicle manufacturing process less harmful? These tech ventures might offer us some answers. Hylico trucks are due to be released in 2023 with a promise to run on hydrogen produced via biomass thermolysis – a process of transforming waste from the wood industry into organic charcoal fertilizer. What they do: Nowos Netherlands Country: 2019 Founding year: Nowos helps cut the need for battery manufacturing by bringing new energy to the existing batteries. The startup specializes in repairing, refurbishing, and recycling lithium batteries in order to make the electric vehicle industry more sustainable. What they do: VinFast Vietnam Country: 2017 Founding year: The company focuses on manufacturing all-electric sport-utility vehicles with a special subscription scheme for battery maintenance. The consumers signing up for the subscription are eligible for free battery maintenance and replacement as its capacity drops over time. What they do: ✅ Reduce animal product consumption Meat production is by far one of the most environmentally harmful industries. It’s one of the major causes of deforestation, loss of biodiversity, excessive water usage – and greenhouse gas emissions. Animals – particularly cows and sheep – create enormous amounts of methane as they digest food and produce manure. Overall, the meat and dairy industry is responsible for about 14,5% of global greenhouse emissions. While simply lowering the consumption of meat is already a significant step towards more sustainable agricultural practices, what would make a real difference at this point is a synergy of different technologies offering animal product alternatives. Software Lets Us Make Less GPU, But Use More Understanding how the things that we buy and use affect our environment is not a simple exercise. Unless you're foraging for food and making tools by hand, everything you consume has a complex environmental impact that's probably larger than you think. For example, that little piece of sashimi you're eating in SOHO might have been caught thousands of miles out in the Pacific and brought back to Japan (the boat burning fuel both ways), flown on an airplane (burning fuel), and delivered to the restaurant in a truck (burning fuel). Everyone involved - fisherman, airline crew, truck driver, chef, wait staff - had to get to and from work. And if you're eating an apex predator like a tuna, there's an additional set of downstream ecosystem impacts. Computer chips are no different. In fact, manufacturing at such a staggering level of microscopic precision comes with a surprisingly large investment of energy and other resources, plus other ecological impacts. And beyond fabrication, chips must be distributed, installed, and ultimately powered inside computers - all activities that impact the environment. As the juggernauts of the Metaverse, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Gaming push forward, GPU acceleration will become even more critical and widespread - with corresponding environmental pressures mounting. If we can figure out a way to raise utilization to, say, 90%, we would be able to do with the GPUs we have, do the same amount of computing with 1/6 the number of GPUs, or some balance on a spectrum in between. WorkManager is ubiquitous in modern android development. We use it to run any background work which should not be bound to the application process lifecycle. It was first introduced in May 2018 and replaced several scheduling frameworks. The library unifies it all with a concise and simple API. You no longer have to orchestrate JobScheduler, GcmNetworkManager, Evernote AndroidJob, and so on. In fact, this new API is saving us quite a lot of maintenance work, but is it perfect? There are a few rough areas we’ll explore in this article. Dependency injection It’s hard to imagine a modern production-grade android application without dependency injection. In our example, we’ll use Dagger2, but the principle will remain the same for any DI framework. Consider that you have a job that runs every hour.
