Driving education and information at every step of the process for those who use their platform builds confidence and ultimately, platform loyalty. #3 Product Innovation - Recognizing the Need for Tailored Products Although there is now much wider recognition that crypto investors aren't all young, hoodie-wearing Silicon Valley males who mine Bitcoin from their basements, a lot of products out there still cater to this demographic and have limited the industry's appeal to a broader audience. To counter this, smart companies are focusing on products that address some of the key concerns associated with the crypto industry. This includes user-friendly wallets designed to make the digital world as accessible as traditional apps - with an emphasis on security alongside user-friendly features that do away with complexities such as seed phrases. In addition, a new breed of stablecoin marries the trustworthiness of traditional fiat assets with the benefits of blockchain (without the volatility). These stablecoins provide an easy ‘on-ramp’ to the world of crypto, facilitating instant, low-cost, global, and programmable payments and will become a catalyst for greater crypto adoption and the digitization of financial products and services. He could never, even a minute before, have conceived that any one could behave like that to him, Mitya Karamazov. What was worst of all, there was something humiliating in it, and on their side something “supercilious and scornful.” It was nothing to take off his coat, but he was asked to undress further, or rather not asked but “commanded,” he quite understood that. From pride and contempt he submitted without a word. Several peasants accompanied the lawyers and remained on the same side of the curtain. “To be ready if force is required,” thought Mitya, “and perhaps for some other reason, too.” “Well, must I take off my shirt, too?” he asked sharply, but Nikolay Parfenovitch did not answer. He was busily engaged with the prosecutor in examining the coat, the trousers, the waistcoat and the cap; and it was evident that they were both much interested in the scrutiny. “They make no bones about it,” thought Mitya, “they don’t keep up the most elementary politeness.” “I ask you for the second time—need I take off my shirt or not?” he said, still more sharply and irritably. “Don’t trouble yourself. We will tell you what to do,” Nikolay Parfenovitch said, and his voice was positively peremptory, or so it seemed to Mitya. Meantime a consultation was going on in undertones between the lawyers. There turned out to be on the coat, especially on the left side at the back, a huge patch of blood, dry, and still stiff. There were bloodstains on the trousers, too. Nikolay Parfenovitch, moreover, in the presence of the peasant witnesses, passed his fingers along the collar, the cuffs, and all the seams of the coat and trousers, obviously looking for something—money, of course. He didn’t even hide from Mitya his suspicion that he was capable of sewing money up in his clothes. “He treats me not as an officer but as a thief,” Mitya muttered to himself. They communicated their ideas to one another with amazing frankness. The secretary, for instance, who was also behind the curtain, fussing about and listening, called Nikolay Parfenovitch’s attention to the cap, which they were also fingering. “You remember Gridyenko, the copying‐clerk,” observed the secretary. “Last summer he received the wages of the whole office, and pretended to have lost the money when he was drunk. And where was it found? Why, in just such pipings in his cap. The hundred‐rouble notes were screwed up in little rolls and sewed in the piping.” Both the lawyers remembered Gridyenko’s case perfectly, and so laid aside Mitya’s cap, and decided that all his clothes must be more thoroughly examined later. “Excuse me,” cried Nikolay Parfenovitch, suddenly, noticing that the right cuff of Mitya’s shirt was turned in, and covered with blood, “excuse me, what’s that, blood?” “Yes,” Mitya jerked out. “That is, what blood? ... and why is the cuff turned in?” Mitya told him how he had got the sleeve stained with blood looking after Grigory, and had turned it inside when he was washing his hands at Perhotin’s. “You must take off your shirt, too. That’s very important as material evidence.” Mitya flushed red and flew into a rage. “What, am I to stay naked?” he shouted. “Don’t disturb yourself. We will arrange something. And meanwhile take off your socks.” “You’re not joking? Is that really necessary?” Mitya’s eyes flashed. “We are in no mood for joking,” answered Nikolay Parfenovitch sternly. “Well, if I must—” muttered Mitya, and sitting down on the bed, he took off his socks. He felt unbearably awkward. All were clothed, while he was naked, and strange to say, when he was undressed he felt somehow guilty in their presence, and was almost ready to believe himself that he was inferior to them, and that now they had a perfect right to despise him. “When all are undressed, one is somehow not ashamed, but when one’s the only one undressed and everybody is looking, it’s degrading,” he kept repeating to himself, again and again. “It’s like a dream, I’ve sometimes dreamed of being in such degrading positions.” It was a misery to him to take off his socks. They were very dirty, and so were his underclothes, and now every one could see it. And what was worse, he disliked his feet. All his life he had thought both his big toes hideous. He particularly loathed the coarse, flat, crooked nail on the right one, and now they would all see it. Feeling intolerably ashamed made him, at once and intentionally, rougher. He pulled off his shirt, himself. “Would you like to look anywhere else if you’re not ashamed to?” “No, there’s no need to, at present.” “Well, am I to stay naked like this?” he added savagely. “Yes, that can’t be helped for the time.... Kindly sit down here for a while. You can wrap yourself in a quilt from the bed, and I ... I’ll see to all this.” All the things were shown to the witnesses. The report of the search was drawn up, and at last Nikolay Parfenovitch went out, and the clothes were carried out after him. Ippolit Kirillovitch went out, too. Mitya was left alone with the peasants, who stood in silence, never taking their eyes off him. Mitya wrapped himself up in the quilt. He felt cold. His bare feet stuck out, and he couldn’t pull the quilt over so as to cover them. Nikolay Parfenovitch seemed to be gone a long time, “an insufferable time.” “He thinks of me as a puppy,” thought Mitya, gnashing his teeth. “That rotten prosecutor has gone, too, contemptuous no doubt, it disgusts him to see me naked!” Mitya imagined, however, that his clothes would be examined and returned to him. But what was his indignation when Nikolay Parfenovitch came back with quite different clothes, brought in behind him by a peasant. “Here are clothes for you,” he observed airily, seeming well satisfied with the success of his mission. “Mr. Kalganov has kindly provided these for this unusual emergency, as well as a clean shirt. Luckily he had them all in his trunk. You can keep your own socks and underclothes.” Mitya flew into a passion. “I won’t have other people’s clothes!” he shouted menacingly, “give me my own!” “It’s impossible!” “Give me my own. Damn Kalganov and his clothes, too!” It was a long time before they could persuade him. But they succeeded somehow in quieting him down. They impressed upon him that his clothes, being stained with blood, must be “included with the other material evidence,” and that they “had not even the right to let him have them now ... taking into consideration the possible outcome of the case.” Mitya at last understood this. He subsided into gloomy silence and hurriedly dressed himself. He merely observed, as he put them on, that the clothes were much better than his old ones, and that he disliked “gaining by the change.” The coat was, besides, “ridiculously tight. Am I to be dressed up like a fool ... for your amusement?” They urged upon him again that he was exaggerating, that Kalganov was only a little taller, so that only the trousers might be a little too long. But the coat turned out to be really tight in the shoulders. “Damn it all! I can hardly button it,” Mitya grumbled. “Be so good as to tell Mr. Kalganov from me that I didn’t ask for his clothes, and it’s not my doing that they’ve dressed me up like a clown.” “He understands that, and is sorry ... On his recovery, he clearly and emphatically stated, in reply to our questions, that when, on coming out to the steps, and hearing a noise in the garden, he made up his mind to go into it through the little gate which stood open, before he noticed you running, as you have told us already, in the dark from the open window where you saw your father, he, Grigory, glanced to the left, and, while noticing the open window, observed at the same time, much nearer to him, the door, standing wide open—that door which you have stated to have been shut the whole time you were in the garden. I will not conceal from you that Grigory himself confidently affirms and bears witness that you must have run from that door, though, of course, he did not see you do so with his own eyes, since he only noticed you first some distance away in the garden, running towards the fence.” Mitya had leapt up from his chair half‐way through this speech. “Nonsense!” he yelled, in a sudden frenzy, “it’s a barefaced lie. He couldn’t have seen the door open because it was shut. He’s lying!” “I consider it my duty to repeat that he is firm in his statement. He does not waver. He adheres to it. We’ve cross‐examined him several times.” “Precisely. I have cross‐examined him several times,” Nikolay Parfenovitch confirmed warmly. “It’s false, false! It’s either an attempt to slander me, or the hallucination of a madman,” Mitya still shouted. “He’s simply raving, from loss of blood, from the wound. He must have fancied it when he came to.... He’s raving.” “Yes, but he noticed the open door, not when he came to after his injuries, but before that, as soon as he went into the garden from the lodge.” “But it’s false, it’s false! It can’t be so! He’s slandering me from spite.... He couldn’t have seen it ... I didn’t come from the door,” gasped Mitya. The prosecutor turned to Nikolay Parfenovitch and said to him impressively: “Confront him with it.” “Do you recognize this object?” Nikolay Parfenovitch laid upon the table a large and thick official envelope, on which three seals still remained intact. The envelope was empty, and slit open at one end. Mitya stared at it with open eyes. “It ... it must be that envelope of my father’s, the envelope that contained the three thousand roubles ... and if there’s inscribed on it, allow me, ‘For my little chicken’ ... yes—three thousand!” he shouted, “do you see, three thousand, do you see?” “Of course, we see. But we didn’t find the money in it. It was empty, and lying on the floor by the bed, behind the screen.” For some seconds Mitya stood as though thunderstruck. “Gentlemen, it’s Smerdyakov!” he shouted suddenly, at the top of his voice. “It’s he who’s murdered him! He’s robbed him! No one else knew where the old man hid the envelope. It’s Smerdyakov, that’s clear, now!” “But you, too, knew of the envelope and that it was under the pillow.” “I never knew it. I’ve never seen it. This is the first time I’ve looked at it. I’d only heard of it from Smerdyakov.... He was the only one who knew where the old man kept it hidden, I didn’t know ...” Mitya was completely breathless. “But you told us yourself that the envelope was under your deceased father’s pillow. You especially stated that it was under the pillow, so you must have known it.” “We’ve got it written down,” confirmed Nikolay Parfenovitch. “Nonsense! It’s absurd! I’d no idea it was under the pillow. And perhaps it wasn’t under the pillow at all.... It was just a chance guess that it was under the pillow. What does Smerdyakov say? Have you asked him where it was? What does Smerdyakov say? that’s the chief point.... And I went out of my way to tell lies against myself.... I told you without thinking that it was under the pillow, and now you— Oh, you know how one says the wrong thing, without meaning it. No one knew but Smerdyakov, only Smerdyakov, and no one else.... He didn’t even tell me where it was! But it’s his doing, his doing; there’s no doubt about it, he murdered him, that’s as clear as daylight now,” Mitya exclaimed more and more frantically, repeating himself incoherently, and growing more and more exasperated and excited. “You must understand that, and arrest him at once.... He must have killed him while I was running away and while Grigory was unconscious, that’s clear now.... He gave the signal and father opened to him ... for no one but he knew the signal, and without the signal father would never have opened the door....” “But you’re again forgetting the circumstance,” the prosecutor observed, still speaking with the same restraint, though with a note of triumph, “that there was no need to give the signal if the door already stood open when you were there, while you were in the garden....” “The door, the door,” muttered Mitya, and he stared speechless at the prosecutor. He sank back helpless in his chair. All were silent. “Yes, the door!... It’s a nightmare! God is against me!” he exclaimed, staring before him in complete stupefaction. “Come, you see,” the prosecutor went on with dignity, “and you can judge for yourself, Dmitri Fyodorovitch. On the one hand we have the evidence of the open door from which you ran out, a fact which overwhelms you and us. On the other side your incomprehensible, persistent, and, so to speak, obdurate silence with regard to the source from which you obtained the money which was so suddenly seen in your hands, when only three hours earlier, on your own showing, you pledged your pistols for the sake of ten roubles! In view of all these facts, judge for yourself. What are we to believe, and what can we depend upon? The Prosecutor Catches Mitya

Frameworks are fantastic ready-made tools that offer a wealth of functionality for building applications. However, there is often a hidden drawback to using them. In this article, I'll explain why I had to stop relying on frameworks and start thinking like a problem solver instead. I have been a backend engineer using Python for four years and enjoy developing the unseen components of a system. It makes me feel like the character Elliot from Mr. Robot, which is quite amusing. During my early days as a backend engineer, I was quick to solve problems using Django. The framework had all the necessary tools to create a minimum viable product for a client, so there was no need for much thought. I’ll tell you what happened. I got so comfortable with using the framework, and the ORM (god, so seductive) that I did not bother myself to understand the SQL operations it abstracted for me. A day came, I was working as a contract backend engineer, and the tech lead asked me a couple of simple, really simple SQL questions like: What are “Joins” in SQL? Why do we need “indexes”? How do you “select” and “limit” a hundred records from a table using SQL? What is the difference between “inner joins” and “outer joins”? My heart sank. I could literally hear the voices in my head screaming “Oh, god. Oh, god. Oh, god. What do we do? What do we do now? Think, think, think, think!”. And after five minutes of an awkward long silence, he said to me: “Abram… You are an amazing young engineer, and I am blown by your early exposure and experience you have in the industry. But if you do not know the answers to the questions I just asked you, then, that’s a very big problem.” My so-called self-esteem and my knowing-it-all mindset got destroyed. I decided not to go ahead with building the project. I was depressed! And there’s where it hit me, just because you’ve successfully built and launched a backend system doesn’t mean it’s tightly secured, or that it adheres to principles that exist to govern the way you build systems. You need the know-how on how certain tools work underneath the hood. So, I did what anyone in my position would do, I began to study. I refused to take up any contract, full-time or part-time role that involved me building projects that would be used by “real people”. I was scared something would happen. After six months of studying, and late-night brainstorming, I was confident again. I now had the confidence to build even more robust and high-performant systems without worrying that I was doing something the wrong way. Whenever I am building an application with Django, I don’t say “I have designed the User and UserProfile models”, instead; I say, “I have designed the users and user_profiles table schemas”. The way I approach solving problems changed. I was no longer thinking in the “Django way” of doing things. I was thinking (literally) like a problem solver. Summary and Parting words At the end of the day, Django is just a tool for building software. So are Laravel, and NodeJS. You shouldn’t be obsessed with these technologies, someday they’re going to be obsolete. What happens then? Would you around complaining? Or be a problem solver that can quickly adapt to the forever-changing industry? bitch I once was asked to work on X feature with Vue.js and I gracefully accepted the challenge. In less than 20 hours, I had read six (6) articles about/on Vue.js, read through important concepts I ought to know on its official documentation, and delivered the feature the next day. Was I surprised I could pull off such a hat trick? No. Did I know I could do such a thing without no experience whatsoever? Why, yes. Of course! I am an engineer, and solving problems that would make my brains scream is something I love doing.

The Hidden Catch With Using Frameworks

Do Today What Others Won’t. When John Harley created in 2015, his motivation was to do things better. This concept is not new, and it is certainly prevalent in the business world, where entire industries have flourished on simple day-to-day improvements. Fishing Online However, Harley’s approach to his one-stop shop for all things fishing has encompassed this idea time and time again. His refusal to accept the satisfactory or even comfortable status quo has consistently yielded Fishing Online and its customers benefits that will only continue to grow. From its inception, through numerous growing pains, to being honored on the INC. 5000 list for the third year in a row in 2022, Harley has strived to make his company as efficient as possible. “Oh, the places you’ll go?” -Dr. Seuss Coming from a family with five other siblings, Harley was no stranger to facing challenges. Even as the family struggled to pay for his college education, he was able to earn his degree in computer science from the University of Pittsburgh. Although he always wanted to own his own business and be his own boss, his career as a software engineer provided him with a good life. Even as his brother launched a successful online business, Harley had yet to make the jump himself, instead helping his brother streamline his company on the side. It wasn’t until he went to a kayak fishing tournament that he visualized his path to entrepreneurship. He saw countless competitors with their kayaks and gear, often valued in the tens of thousands of dollars. He realized that this was a massive market, without a convenient, fully stocked, vendor with the data integrity customers demand when providing their credit card information. From here, Harley set out to build Fishing Online. For the first three and a half years, he had to keep working his day job to accumulate the capital he needed, where he had entire months with no days off. In his own words, “I thought I’d be a millionaire overnight. With my automation background, I’d just optimize everything, it would just run itself. This was not true.” Despite the hardships, and hitting low points, Harley’s final words of wisdom to me were “Stick with it. Keep pushing through the hard times, and eventually you’ll get there.” He sacrificed his own comfortable life to pursue his dream of owning a business because he knew there was a better way for avid fishermen to shop for all their needs. “Automation is driving the decline of banal and repetitive tasks.” -Amber Rudd Harley’s pursuit for improvements didn’t end once the company began. He continued to optimize his electronic footprint, both externally and internally. Originally, Harley used Bigcommerce for his platform, but they were overbearing and had several negative issues. After forcing him into a corner, he made the decision to switch to Shopify. This was a major risk, as this could’ve crippled his business for an unknown amount of time. However, Harley was willing to take the risk, as he knew there had to be a better way to operate, and he wasn’t willing to accept the current situation. With his programming background, he was able to get his company to go live on Shopify within three days and has been much happier with their service. In regard to catching the search algorithms, there was a rude awakening for Harley to develop the brand. He was unaware that the product descriptions were crucial to getting in front of customers as they searched the web. From his own experience, his brother told him that good descriptions are a necessity to being found organically. Harley had thousands of products that all needed new descriptions. Despite the task in front of him, he did not accept the state of things and invested the time to improve the search engine presence of Fishing Online. Inside his own walls, he first relied on C# to build his accounting software, with the hopes of crafting a system that would automatically manage the ordering process. He soon learned that Excel, with the right Macros could accomplish everything he needed, catapulting his efforts with a solid foundation he no longer had to construct. His custom-made spreadsheets incorporated all the different data that his employees tracked, including inventory, invoicing, and ordering materials. His automated bookkeeping system was able to instantly pull all the information he needed to issue purchase orders. He could now make orders as large as a quarter of a million dollars within minutes, with zero errors. Harley acknowledges that there is existing software that could mimic this capability, but his current system has been crafted and polished to specifically meet the needs of his company. From his service provider to his online sales pitches to his internal data management, Harley continuously pushed for a better way to do business. “A satisfied customer is the best business strategy of all.” -Michael LeBoeuf His dedication wasn’t limited to the virtual world. From limited warehousing to product selection and customer experience, Harley also looked to optimize his operations in the real world. By the time his original shop had grown to include a 10,000-square-foot warehouse, this space was already too small. Rather than slow his scaling, he worked to reduce or eliminate slow-moving products, while also negotiating with a third-party logistics firm. Luckily Harley’s business model was well established to keep his largest items moving, in this case, kayaks. They would sell out before even hitting a shelf. This enabled him to relegate using 3PL for smaller items, which is naturally their strong suit. The kayaks themselves were an excellent opportunity for him, despite their challenges, and often provided the coattails for accessory sales, increasing overall profits. As mentioned, he had to prioritize his inventory due to space, but he made sure to account for the secondary sales a loss leader could generate. One example is the Hawk Trough. As he said “We made no money on it. But we were the only vendor that offered it. Everyone who needed one came to us. Even though it wasn’t profitable, it got people to shop.” Harley’s understanding is that a better customer experience with limitless options, despite the detriments, would pay off in the end. Finding a better alternative for his customers and his business has certainly contributed to Fishing Online’s success. Be Proud, but Never Satisfied. Harley’s unwillingness to settle drove him to create a lucrative, niche business that caters to all the needs of its target clients. Over the course of creating and growing Fishing Online, had he simply accepted the status quo at any of its crucial milestones, the company might not exist, let alone thrive the way it has. From his personal goals that drove him to leave his comfortable programming job to developing a superb, automated process for inventory and order management, to optimizing his real-world footprint and product selection, Harley has always kept his eye out for better and more rewarding opportunities, regardless of the hardships required to seize them. He stated that his next goal is to surpass his personal best on the INC. 5000 list of 260, which he achieved in 2019. I have no doubt he will accomplish this, as his success over the years has never made him complacent or scared of hard work and change.

How to Make Inc's Fastest Growing Companies by Catching the Big Fish

I've always thought that it takes a special kind of person to be a salesperson. Of course, anyone can do it – but not everyone can do it well. It takes drive, confidence, and most importantly, the courage to innovate and take risks. Especially if you're trying to catch a whale. Ryan Staley is someone I had the pleasure of interviewing this time last year, and I'm excited to be sharing his story with you all in today's newsletter. It's inspiring to hear from people who step out of their industry's cookie-cutter mold in order to achieve big things. As CEO of his own company, , Ryan helps execs and CEOs land big-figure sales in short 3-month sprints – an incredible achievement in any market. But how did he get there? What's his alluring secret to catching a whale and landing big enterprise clients? Whale Boss Starting Out As A Small Fry Ryan's career in sales started out like anyone else's. He was working all hours, and becoming incredibly frustrated with the process. “When I was a rep, I closed zero deals in the first eight months there – which is really, really hard. And I finally figured it out and found my way... [but] I got sick of working 60 hours a week to make 100% of my quota.” I can completely understand this frustration. It's a tough industry to break into, and the hours are definitely not for everyone. Most salespeople make 40 percent of their salary in commission, but for some, it's closer to the 50-50 mark (or even higher). No wonder Ryan was dissatisfied, stressed, and longing for another way to do things. “When I saw another guy who was flying on private jets work nine months of the year and only 30 hours a week, I really dissected what this guy was doing. I had to figure this out.” The Whale-Centric Approach After realizing that this other salesman was earning a whole lot more than him by working a whole lot less, Ryan decided to crack the code. “I reverse-engineered it. Out of the 180% of quota he hit every year, roughly about 130% of it came from two deals. He's basically got two customers, and then he's just adding on some other components.” Ryan thought back to all the companies he'd worked for, and a pattern began to emerge; every single company had one or two people who took on the whales, while the rest of the sales team fought over the smaller fish. “Every single sales company I worked at had the same kind of model; it was a trend, it was a pattern. So I started to really focus on that.” Fishing With New Bait Soon enough, Ryan's company got onboard with his way of thinking and asked him to create their enterprise team – the salespeople who would go after the whales – totally from scratch. “We had no playbook. We had no marketing department. I didn't even have a team. So I looked at the experience I had prior; I started deconstructing all the big deals that our company had, and the patterns and verticals and exact situations that they did.” I was floored just thinking about the amount of work this would have taken – and to have to do it on your own? Talk about growth. “I started to see patterns in terms of how people bought what they did, and how they acquired different customers. And so I modeled all those success factors, and then packaged it into a process that I developed from scratch on how to sell enterprise deals.” All of this work led to incredible success for the company he worked for at the time. He'd cracked the code, alright. Ryan's Turning Point The new system Ryan developed seemed to go from strength to strength; it was boosting their business to new heights in a matter of a few years. “We leveled up each year. So for example, our monthly recurring revenue for the bigger deals might be $20,000 a month in year one. The next year, we leveled it up and started getting $70,000 month deals, then it was $150,000 month deals, then it was $300,000, then it was $600,000." This new business unit resulted in growth from zero to $30 million annual recurring revenue, $30 million in capital revenue, over thirty $500,000 plus contracts, and a $20 million contract. And he did it all with exactly four salespeople and no lead generation whatsoever. “We specifically focused on continually expanding and multiplying our biggest customers. And that's how we were able to be resourceful and get those results.” With his newfound and continually re-affirmed strategy, Ryan was busting to share what he'd learned with other salespeople. Why weren't more people aware of this? He began designing a course to teach other sales professionals how to land big deals – but not everyone was happy about it, and his company let him go. Stepping Out Solo To Ryan's credit, he hardly skipped a beat. “I kept saying to myself, ‘Ryan, this is going to be a hell of a comeback story. There's gonna be a hell of a redemption story. I started talking to my network, and people said, ‘What you did, I want you to do that for my company.’ And so I started to focus on it – and the more I focused on it, the more it started to grow.” Ryan began teaching other companies how to focus on scaling their big clients, and from there, his business snowballed. Whale Boss is now a thriving company that benefits from Ryan's smorgasbord of valuable experience and frameworks. “Essentially, I coach CEOs on how to implement those systems that got results for me in a resource constrained environment where they don't have tons of venture capital.” In our interview, Ryan was awesome enough to share a snapshot of the three-step framework he uses to help clients land big deals. Let's take a look. 1. Replicate and Double According to Ryan, the first step is to look at the biggest clients you currently have. Work on turning them into bigger clients through upselling, cross-selling, and expanding the services you offer them. “Number one is this: what are your top five clients? And how do we replicate and expand them every single year? If you have five customers that are paying you $20,000 a month, how do we make that 10 customers next year each paying you $30,000 a month? The numbers add up really, really quick.” See, it's not all about finding someone new who will pay you more than the others. Look at what you're already doing well and expand on it by offering more to your current clients – but do it in steps, not leaps and bounds. “If someone's paying you 20k a month, you can double it to 50k a year. Where people go wrong is trying to go from 20k a month to $200,000 a month, when the customers don't have the references or the infrastructure to support that.” 2. Create Continual Value Once you've worked your clients into whales, it's time to think about generating as much value as possible. “The next one is a secondary sales process, which means expanding existing customers in terms of average dollar value, lifetime value, or whatever acronym you're using.” Ryan explained that this second step is where too many companies get it wrong. “What happens is companies will spend six months, eight months, nine months, sometimes even a year getting a customer. They get the customer, and then they don't talk to them. They don't have a process to create continual value.” You've got to be intentional about prolonging and expanding the value you're gaining from each customer – and you can do that by focusing on all of their business problems, not just the one they told you about when they signed up. “Let's face it: whenever you get one problem solved, there's usually five new problems that occur as a result of that.” 3. Use A Referral System And finally, once you've maximized the value you're getting from each individual customer, it's time to start thinking about finding new enterprise clients. How? By using your current clients as a referral system. Ryan explained that most companies are missing out on a huge opportunity by not implementing a referral system. “You build up all this capital with your customers, but you don't systemize on them spreading their word and accelerating the word of all the work that you've done to them to make them happy." Seems like a waste, right? That's why we should be taking inspiration from companies like Dropbox, who used a simple incentive-based referral system to go from 100k users to 4 million users in 18 months. “People feel the need to reciprocate if you give them something of value, specifically on the spot," Ryan explained. "When you go to a diner and your waiter or waitress comes with the bill, the ones that give you something first get a 17% increase in tips. If they make it custom or specific to you, those people get a 30% bump in their tips.” What does that mean for you? Well, if you incentivize referrals using a simple system, you'll be attracting whales left and right. Don't just rely on individual referrals – make it a part of your structure and operations. Wrap-Up And there you have it – Ryan's incredible story of branching out into new territory and making a big splash. Beyond canaries When building systems, you want a canary that behaves like your customer, one that allows you to quickly detect issues as soon as your service(s) chokes. If you are vending an API, then your canary should exercise the different URIs. If you are testing the front end, then your canary can be programmed to mimic a customer using a browser using libraries such as selenium. The canaries are a great place to start if you are just launching a service. But there's a lot more work required to create an operationally robust service. You'll want to inject failures into your system. Also, you need a crystal clear understanding of how your system should behave when its dependencies fail. There are a number of metrics that are considered during the development & release of any software product. One such metric is the ‘user-experience’ which is centered on the ease with which your customers can use your product. You may have developed a product that solves a problem at scale, but if your customers experience difficulties in using it, they may start looking out for other options. Website or web applications that offer better web design, page load speed, usability (ease of use), memory requirements, and more. Today, I will show you how you can measure page load time with Selenium for . Before doing that, we ought to understand the relevance of page load time for a website or a web app. automated browser testing Why Focus On Measuring Page Load Time? More than 40 percent of the website visitors may leave if the loading time is more than 3 seconds. This is why your software development, design, and product development team should focus on improving the performance of your web product. Don’t believe me? In simple terms, measuring page-load time (also referred to as Page Speed) is the amount of time it takes for the content/page to appear on the screen. Lower the page-load time, better is the usability factor of the product, better is your conversion rate. Metrics To Consider For Measuring Page Load Time Different pages on the same website/web-app can have different load times, depending on the design being used for the development of the pages. Developers might have used either of the techniques to reduce the page load time. a. File compression techniques for image optimization. b. Browser caching. c. Reduced number of redirects. d. Reduced usage of non-blocking JavaScript. e. Images of variable sizes depending on the device being used by the      customer That is from the developers’ end, but how would you go about testing the website by measuring the page load time of every page? There could be hundreds of webpages on your website. Not to forget, you would have to perform browser compatibility testing to realize the page load time of every page on your website across hundreds of browsers and browser versions. There is a possibility that your web page load time will differ if accessed from different browsers (including browser versions). It would also depend on the platform (desktop, tablet, mobile, etc.) and the geographical location from where your website/web-app is being accessed. You can’t go about testing every combination(web page + browser + browser version + operating system) manually. This is where comes to the rescue by empowering you to perform automated cross browser testing of your web pages. You can perform automation testing for measuring page load time with Selenium. Before we do that, it is important to have a look at the Navigation Timing. Selenium grid Using Navigation Timing To Measure Page Load Speed So, how do you measure page load speed? Navigation Timing is a popular JavaScript API which can be used for accurately measuring the performance on the web. Though there are other libraries available, Navigation Timing is more reliable & accurate. The Navigation Timing API is available in most of the popular web browsers namely Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc. Though there is the number of interfaces available for Navigation Timing, most of the details related to page load time can be accessed using the properties of the window.performance object. The window.performance returns more accurate results since the API makes use of HRT (High-Resolution Time) to calculate the necessary timings related to a web page. The important properties of the window.performance object are navigation – Details about how the user navigated to the web page. timing – Information about the navigation & page load events. Other interfaces that are available as a part of the Navigation Timing API are PerformanceNavigationTiming, PerformanceTiming, PerformanceNavigation. Performance data is pushed from the client side to server side with the help of an XHR(XMLHttpRequest). Using the Navigation Timing API, you can keep a tab on every request. Time is taken for loading the new page, the time is taken for unloading the previous page, time encountered for looking up the domain name, window. onload total time, response start time, etc. are some of the properties that can be accessed via the window.performance property. Below is an image representing the elements of PerformanceTiming interface. The timing property returns important performance information about the current page/document e.g. details about navigationStart, connectStart, connectEnd, domainLookupStart, domainLookupEnd, and more. The figure below shows the order of performance of navigation.timing events. Each performance.timing attribute shows the time of the navigation event i.e. when the previous page was unloaded? when the latest page was requested? when the Document Object Model (DOM) began loading the page? and more. The timing is in milliseconds which is calculated since midnight of January 1, 1970 (UTC). Open the console and key in window.performance.timing in the console window. As seen from the output window, window.performance returns the performance object which also contains the timing property. LambdaTest Automation Testing To Measure Page Load Time With Selenium You can make use of Selenium to measure the performance of a web page over a period of time. Below is the output once the above code is executed, the output shows the time spent in the front-end & back-end activities of the web-page. Example 2 – Using WebDriverWait Interface For Element Search On A web-page We have a look at another example where we load a web-page and search for the presence of an element (div-id) in the page. We search for the div-id for timeout duration of 5 seconds. Once the page is loaded, div-id (in our case: owl-example) is searched for 5 seconds, after which an exception is raised if the owl-example div-id is not present on the web-page.
