The subject of canonical reference has been touched thousand times. But since some content writers are still making the same mistake over and over, I think it's beneficial to add one more. I hope to reach some who aren't aware of it. Content writing is not enough Writing content is not enough: you can have written the best blog post of the century; it's no good if nobody sees it. One has two ways to spread the word: Link to the post on social media Copy the post to another site The problem happens when copying the content. The problem of content duplication Search engines want to provide users with the most relevant content for their search. They need to order search results to provide more relevant results first. Duplicate content poses the problem of which content to display first. It's a minor issue when it's on the same domain: the search engine will decide, and that's all. The same happens across domains, but the consequences are worse. If another site decides to copy your content, how will the search engine decide which one to list first? My experience has shown me that the most domain wins. Importance depends on the exact search engine, but generally, sites with more audience are considered more important. important My previous bad crossposting experience I started my blog in April 2018. As with every young blood out there, the beginning was very tedious: I was overjoyed the first time I had 100 visits in a single day! Then, in June 2019, I was approached by DZone to become a "Most Valuable Blogger": DZone would publish all my posts. For me, it meant the world. People recognized the content I wrote as being "worthy" enough. Since there would be a link to the original article, I was also counting on getting a slight boost in audience. An awful headline, I know but it's true. I was curious how the Corona Virus had effected traffic for some of the large media publications in the UK and whilst taking a look at the top 10 news sites, I came across something interesting. Is the BBC using to grab more organic traffic or is it an SEO quick fix for something that has gone unaddressed for years? shady tactics Anyone who juggles clients or who works for a large company knows that there is always work to do. Much of a task schedule is a matter of prioritisation and triage. What's the most important thing, that needs to be done yesterday? Are the BBC using a trick to generate more organic visitors and if so, should the UK national broadcaster be operating in such a manner? So what are BBC News doing to grab hundreds of thousands of extra visitors per month? How the BBC is Duplicating Category Pages and Using Canonical Links

Canonical redirect may be confusing to the average WordPress user, yet they can have a big influence on search engine optimization. This article’s goal is to provide you with all of the necessary information concerning them. This article's main point might be summarized in one line. The primary purpose of canonical and old slug redirects is to avoid "duplicated content" issue which might hurt your SEO score. I have found this to be the most common mistake my clients make when optimizing their websites for search engines. However, the good news is that it is easily remediable, which is why I wanted to raise awareness about it. Can "duplicated content" harm your SEO? Simply said, if a single page can be reached through many URLs, Google will treat them as duplicates of the same page and will choose only one URL as the canonical one to be indexed. If this occurs on your website, Google will either pick the URL for you or consider both URLs to be equal, which might result in a substantially lower rank in search results. Everything Will Be OK It’s probably not surprising that people from Canonical have been in touch with me, and that the level of stress that people are experiencing is very high. I want to assure everyone there, . In fact, better than ok. everything will be ok If you don’t know me, I won’t bore you with my life story, but, I know what I am talking about. I left Canonical 1 year ago, after spending 8 years in Canonical putting everything I had into making Ubuntu succeed. It’s Not Personal If you are feeling bitter now because Canonical, or specifically Mark, seems to be cavalier or cold about the financial impact these decisions will have on you or family, let go of that bitterness. It’s a waste of energy, and also misplaced. I knew Mark as well as any person like me could know a person like him. I know first hand that he took his responsibilities to the financial well-being of others extremely seriously. This was true for every conversation that we had about people both inside and outside of Canonical. To my friends who are complaining that Canonical as a company is handling the situation badly, don’t take this personally. Of course they are handling it badly, it’s the first time they have ever had to do this! I hope that they don’t get better with practice. Also, remember Kiko’s Law: “nothing works the first time.” It might be hard to do, but you will sleep better if you cut them some slack. What I am trying to say about this is, don’t make your situation worse by ascribing thoughts and motivations to people who are just trying to do their best in a tough situation. That is just a mental tax that you are giving yourself. In fairness, we all knew that we were making big bets; some might even say, gambles. It had to end either with a big win, or a big loss. At least we had a lot of fun and the chance to write some great code along the way. It’s Fun Out Here! Here’s my main point, though: There are loads of great jobs doing interesting and important things. People will honor and respect the contributions you made to Canonical and Ubuntu. To My Friends at Canonical

A longer read about how Asimov’s Robopsychologist might be coming to life in AI as the Cognitive Architect. Last week at AI Engineer World Fair in San Francisco, engineers and technologists presented cutting-edge AI technology being developed. The conference was motivated by a think piece published by @swyx and @FanaHOVA, defining the role of the AI Engineer (AIE). This role sits at the intersection of product and technology, specializing in applying Large Language Models to software development. There was a common trend in some of the work presented: a need to overcome these models' more messy, probabilistic nature by making them more reliable and engineering-like. This is no surprise since AI Engineering focuses on applying these models to real-world problems. From building a question-answer engine like Perplexity to a tool for better note-taking like Granola, a certain level of determinism is needed to create products that can withstand real-world use. While at the conference, I also followed @hwchase17 on Sequoia's Training Data podcast, as he talked the notion of cognitive architectures. While this was part of a larger conversation about turning LLMs into reasoning agents, this notion of cognitive architecture pointed toward the idea that using LLMs is as much about human-to-machine cognition as it is about technology. Human-machine cognition means understanding human agency and translating it into instructions, considering the intricate steps we take when performing tasks (both conscious and subconscious), and translating them into machine code—that is, model language. Now, a small detour into science fiction: In Asimov's I, Robot, robopsychology is the field of understanding and troubleshooting the complex psychological and behavioral issues that arise as robots (read: AI) become more sophisticated and integrated into human society. Dr. Susan Calvin, a robopsychologist, navigates the dilemmas posed by the laws of robotics. Here, I see a parallel between Asimov's study of robotic psychology and the challenges of training AI models to do what we want them to do. We've built a technology we're still working to understand. @mustafasuleyman even suggests it isn't just a technology, but a new kind of digital species—what an idea! Given the challenges of engineering with language models and their incredible power, there might be a gap in applied AI waiting to be filled by Cognitive Architects—a role most likely already in existence in research labs at OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. Much like an architect works alongside a civil engineer to research how humans live, the Cognitive Architect may work with computer scientists to study human cognition and its relation to model cognition. From examining the boundaries of the model's probabilistic knowledge (latent space) to using the right keywords and canonical definitions to express instructions, to decomposing complex human tasks into the flows of actions, tools, and models, the Cognitive Architect might be part of the recipe to applying these models in ways that don't just tame it down to an engineering feature, but also harness their true nature: To predict where we're most likely to go next. The conference was motivated by a think piece published by @swyx and @FanaHOVA , defining the role of the AI Engineer (AIE). This role sits at the intersection of product and technology, specializing in applying Large Language Models to software development. @swyx @FanaHOVA There was a common trend in some of the work presented: a need to overcome these models' more messy, probabilistic nature by making them more reliable and engineering-like. This is no surprise since AI Engineering focuses on applying these models to real-world problems. From building a question-answer engine like Perplexity to a tool for better note-taking like Granola, a certain level of determinism is needed to create products that can withstand real-world use. While at the conference, I also followed @hwchase17 on Sequoia's Training Data podcast, as he talked the notion of cognitive architectures. While this was part of a larger conversation about turning LLMs into reasoning agents, this notion of cognitive architecture pointed toward the idea that using LLMs is as much about human-to-machine cognition as it is about technology. @hwchase17 Human-machine cognition means understanding human agency and translating it into instructions, considering the intricate steps we take when performing tasks (both conscious and subconscious), and translating them into machine code—that is, model language. Now, a small detour into science fiction: In Asimov's I, Robot, robopsychology is the field of understanding and troubleshooting the complex psychological and behavioral issues that arise as robots (read: AI) become more sophisticated and integrated into human society. Dr. Susan Calvin, a robopsychologist, navigates the dilemmas posed by the laws of robotics. Here, I see a parallel between Asimov's study of robotic psychology and the challenges of training AI models to do what we want them to do. We've built a technology we're still working to understand. @mustafasuleyman even suggests it isn't just a technology, but a new kind of digital species—what an idea! @mustafasuleyman Given the challenges of engineering with language models and their incredible power, there might be a gap in applied AI waiting to be filled by Cognitive Architects—a role most likely already in existence in research labs at OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. Much like an architect works alongside a civil engineer to research how humans live, the Cognitive Architect may work with computer scientists to study human cognition and its relation to model cognition. From examining the boundaries of the model's probabilistic knowledge (latent space) to using the right keywords and canonical definitions to express instructions, to decomposing complex human tasks into the flows of actions, tools, and models, the Cognitive Architect might be part of the recipe to applying these models in ways that don't just tame it down to an engineering feature, but also harness their true nature: To predict where we're most likely to go next.
