How Bildr is combining tech’s biggest trends to create the future. For much of 2021, “no-code” and “creator economy” were the hot buzzwords of the venture world. Today, they’ve been supplanted by a new buzzword that’s taken the world by storm... “web3”. VC’s have raised multi-billion dollar funds. Bored Apes are the new status symbol. Jack Dorsey and Marc Andreessen are even feuding about the topic on Twitter! Beneath all this noise is a group of people who genuinely believe web3 is the future of the internet. But if you haven’t ventured into the rabbit hole, what exactly is it? How does web3 impact SaaS companies? And how might it intersect with no-code? I chatted with Mark Magnuson and Drew Thomas of , who are at the forefront of these trends. Bildr is a visual web development tool that lets you create web apps without writing code. Just last month, Bildr became one of the first no-code companies to incorporate web3 by launching a set of NFTs for their users. Mark and Drew shared their insight about starting Bildr, moving into web3, and the future of web3 + no-code. Bildr %20(1).png) Founding Bildr When spaces like no-code heat up, some entrepreneurs will rush to the market in hopes of quickly striking gold. Bildr, on the other hand, was started organically, long before the term “no-code” had entered the collective consciousness. In 2006, Mark Magnuson dropped out of college to start a consulting agency. Most agencies deliver custom code to their clients, but Mark and team took an alternative approach. Their agency used a homegrown no-code tool to deliver results. Whenever a client made a request their tool couldn’t support, they upgraded the tool. As they competed for larger contracts, they received more bespoke requests, leveling up the platform. Rather than hard-coding any of it, we would just level up the platform. We literally just did that for another decade. We got to a point where we’re selling multi-million dollar custom ERP suites and things like that. We would build them from the ground up without writing any code. Interestingly, Drew had a similar start to his career. While in college, Drew started a consulting agency as well. He too leveraged no-code tools to deliver client work. Although he wasn’t creating a platform, Drew was at the forefront of a major trend as one of the few no-code agencies in the country. Eventually, he decided to leverage his knowledge by creating - a resource for sharing and discovering no-code tools. No Code List gained in popularity, giving Drew a front-row seat to all the newest tools launching in the space. No Code List After fourteen years of evolving his in-house tool, Mark saw an opportunity. As platforms like Webflow started to take off, he recognized that his system could enable others to create web apps of their own. In 2020, Mark officially spun out Bildr and invested the time to productize the tool. Around that time, he began searching for a designer to lead the Bildr team. Mark came across Drew’s consulting practice and decided to reach out. Upon demoing Bildr for Drew, it was love at first sight. They casually demoed Bildr for me, and it was just a complete paradigm shift. What I saw [with Bildr], I didn’t see in any other no-code tools. It was the most versatile tool. That’s where it clicked for me. Competition in the space has intensified recently, but Bildr is separating itself from the pack. They’ve inspired a passionate community of early users thanks to the opinionless nature of the product. Unlike other no-code tools, Bildr is a layer on top of code. It has a steeper learning curve than most but practically no restrictions on what you can build. Their early adopter community, which is more technical than most, has played a big part in their initial entrance into web3. ‍ Defining Web3 Web3 has become such a buzzword that it’s taken on all kinds of different meanings. Before getting into Bildr’s approach to web3, I wanted to pin down precisely what it means. While they admitted web3 could be a bit nebulous, Mark and Drew’s definition of web3 was fundamentally about decentralized authentication. It’s a distinct way of authenticating with crypto wallets, transferring money without intermediaries, and leveraging decentralization. In web3, everyone has a wallet that can be generated through tools like or . This wallet is unique and can be used to store NFT’s, transfer money, or log in to services. From a technical standpoint, this is the crux of web3. The ramifications of decentralized authentication are still unknown, but Bildr sees it as potentially transformative. Coinbase Rainbow In a web3 world, relationships between companies and users are “trustless.” As a SaaS company, you don’t need to know anything about a user other than their wallet ID. As a user, you can single sign-on to services without an intermediary like Google or Facebook. In this way, you own your authentication. Mark compared this to a decentralized version of open-source dynamics. If you work on open source projects, people go and look at, your ranking, right? How much have you committed to these open source projects? You can get clout in your community for that. You can get hired because of that. You can actually make more money because of that. It’s the same kind of thing. ‍ Bildr Passes While it’s fascinating to imagine the future of web3, Mark and Drew aren’t just talking about it. In December, Bildr for their users. Unlike most NFT’s in the news, Bildr passes are focused squarely on utility. Holders of their Studio Pass receive lifelong access to the Bildr product in addition to other community benefits. launched NFT collections The Studio Passes also inspired a new relationship between Bildr and their customers. When purchasing the NFT, users can choose the artwork on the pass. This feature involves users in the creation of their token, leading many to share their purchases on social media. Mark and Drew say this has directly translated into the community as users feel more ownership of the platform. You get this sense of commitment to the thing you’re doing. It’s really interesting. You don’t get that with Stripe... the result is they want to share that thing because they took part in creating it. What’s also interesting about this model is that users theoretically have limited downside. Lifetime pass NFT’s are transferrable, so you can sell them on open markets. If owners of a Studio Pass decide to leave Bildr, they can recoup their money on a sale. There are risk factors, like the price of ETH, but fundamentally it’s a new approach to purchasing SaaS. From Bildr’s perspective, they see added upside as former customers bring in new ones on their way out. .png) All in all, Mark and Drew are treating this as an experiment, albeit one with major potential ramifications. Before the NFT passes, they wondered whether this was useful or even feasible. Having run this first experiment, the team unanimously agrees they should continue doing things like this. ‍ Web2.5 As optimistic about web3 as Mark and Drew are, they’re also realistic about the timeline. This is early days for web3 as primitives are still being built. Rather than an overnight shift, they envision a 10+ year evolution. I think people also should recognize that we’re not really moving there for a decade, at least. It’s like cloud. Are we all the way in the cloud yet? We’re still not there. It’s been 20 years, but legacy companies still have local servers, and there’s room for it. It’s going to be the same thing with web3. We’re in web 2.5. In “web2.5”, traditional SaaS companies will begin to layer web3 components onto their web2 products. Currently, there’s a bit of a chicken-or-egg problem with users and platforms not yet reaching the tipping point of adoption. As more users create crypto wallets, it makes more sense to incorporate decentralized auth into SaaS apps. ‍ Web3 and No-Code While powerful technology underpins the web3 movement, a specific culture also accompanies it. Mark and Drew described the unique ethos of web3 or, as they playfully described it, “the vibes.” They likened this culture to the early days of the internet, where everyone was experimenting and cheering each other on. I [can’t believe] I’m saying vibes out loud, but after you’re in it, you’re like... it is vibes. That’s actually what it is. It’s crazy like the early days of no-code Twitter. Everyone is super positive... it just engages you. You want to be a part of it. This intangible component is where web3 and no-code collide (🤝). Web3 and no-code both have a shared goal of broadening the world’s ability to do things. These movements both envision a society where more people are creators. People who are attracted to the frontier are naturally attracted to both. We’re seeing this play out in Discord groups and Twitter conversations repeatedly. A large chunk of people are like, “Hey, I was on cutting edge with no-code, now I’ll be on the bleeding edge with web3.” It’s a natural transition for a lot of that group. It makes total sense to me. Ironically, despite their overlapping interests, web3 today is not particularly no-code friendly. Drew, who’s been programming for nearly twenty years, still feels like a novice with smart contracts. Luckily, that’s where tools like Bildr can help bridge the gap. Mark and Drew believe it’s possible to build just about anything with Bildr - including web3.

FUTURE PROSPECTS The search for transiting planets around small stars has been motivated in large part by their potential for atmospheric characterization. Owing to the size and proximity of its host, K2-315b is thus one of the few known terrestrial exoplanets possibly amenable for atmospheric characterization in the next two decades. In order to quantify and contextualize its prospects for atmospheric study, we followed the same approach as for TRAPPIST-1 in Gillon et al. (2016) (see de Wit & Seager 2013), focusing here on all known terrestrial planets. We selected terrestrial planets as planets with a reported radius below 1.6 R⊕ in the NASA Exoplanet Archive[4] (Rogers 2015; Fulton et al. 2017). We thus derive the amplitude of the planets’ signals in transmission as: where Rp is the planetary radius, R∗ is the stellar radius, and heff is the effective atmospheric height, µ is the atmospheric mean molecular mass, T is the atmospheric temperature and g is the local gravity. We assume heff to cover seven atmospheric scale heights, µ the atmospheric mean molecular mass to be 20 amu, and the atmospheric temperature to be the equilibrium temperature for a Bond albedo of 0. For the planets with missing masses, we estimated g using the model of Chen & Kipping (2017). The signal amplitudes are reported in Figure 7 together with the SNR relative to TRAPPIST-1 b’s, calculated by scaling the signal amplitude with the hosts’ brightness in J band. We find that K2-315b fares closely to the outer planets of TRAPPIST-1 in terms of potential for atmospheric exploration with JWST— its warmer and thus larger atmosphere compensating for its larger star. In fact, its relative SNR for transmission spectroscopy is half those of TRAPPIST-1 f–h, meaning that assessing the presence of a µ ∼ 20 atmosphere around the planet would require of the order of 40 transits—four times the ∼10 transits required for a similar assessment for TRAPPIST-1 f–h (Lustig-Yaeger et al. 2019). K2-315b is thus at the very edge of JWST’s capability for atmospheric characterization, mostly due to its “large” host star. The derivation above allows us to rank planets in terms of relative potential for atmospheric characterization, assuming a similar atmospheric scenario. In practice, a significant difference in atmospheric mean molecular mass, surface pressure, and/or cloud/haze altitude will strongly affect the actual potential of a planet for characterization (Lustig-Yaeger et al. 2019). For example, in some cases clouds could render the characterization of the favorable TRAPPIST-1 e difficult even with the generation of instruments following the JWST (i.e., LUVOIR, Pidhorodetska et al. 2020). With an estimated radial velocity semi-amplitude of 1.3 m s−1 (assuming a mass comparable to that of Earth), the planet could be accessible for mass measurements using modern ultra-precise radial velocity instruments. Such possibilities and a ranking amongst the 10 best-suited Earth-sized planets for atmospheric study, EPIC 249631677 b will therefore play an important role in the upcoming era of comparative exoplanetology for terrestrial worlds. It will surely be a prime target for the generation of observatories to follow JWST and bring the field fully into this new era. This project makes use of publicly available K2 data. She could not certainly accuse her loving sister-in-law of cruelty; but she had to do that which was more galling: she had to accuse herself of imprudence against which her sister-in-law had warned her. Miss Bold had never encouraged Eleanor's acquaintance with Mr. Slope, and she had positively discouraged the friendship of the Stanhopes, as far as her usual gentle mode of speaking had permitted. Eleanor had only laughed at her, however, when she said that she disapproved of married women who lived apart from their husbands and suggested that Charlotte Stanhope never went to church. Now, however, Eleanor must either hold her tongue, which was quite impossible, or confess herself to have been utterly wrong, which was nearly equally so. So she staved off the evil day by more tears, and consoled herself by inducing little Johnny to rouse himself sufficiently to return her caresses. "He is a darling—as true as gold. What would mamma do without him? Mamma would lie down and die if she had not her own Johnny Bold to give her comfort." This and much more she said of the same kind, and for a time made no other answer to Mary's inquiries. This kind of consolation from the world's deceit is very common. Mothers obtain it from their children, and men from their dogs. Some men even do so from their walking-sticks, which is just as rational. How is it that we can take joy to ourselves in that we are not deceived by those who have not attained the art to deceive us? In a true man, if such can be found, or a true woman, much consolation may indeed be taken. In the caresses of her child, however, Eleanor did receive consolation, and may ill befall the man who would begrudge it to her. The evil day, however, was only postponed. She had to tell her disagreeable tale to Mary, and she had also to tell it to her father. Must it not, indeed, be told to the whole circle of her acquaintance before she could be made to stand all right with them? At the present moment there was no one to whom she could turn for comfort. She hated Mr. Slope; that was a matter of course; in that feeling she revelled. She hated and despised the Stanhopes; but that feeling distressed her greatly. She had, as it were, separated herself from her old friends to throw herself into the arms of this family; and then how had they intended to use her? She could hardly reconcile herself to her own father, who had believed ill of her. Mary Bold had turned Mentor. That she could have forgiven had the Mentor turned out to be in the wrong, but Mentors in the right are not to be pardoned. She could not but hate the archdeacon, and now she hated him worse than ever, for she must in some sort humble herself before him. She hated her sister, for she was part and parcel of the archdeacon. And she would have hated Mr. Arabin if she could. He had pretended to regard her, and yet before her face he had hung over that Italian woman as though there had been no beauty in the world but hers—no other woman worth a moment's attention. And Mr. Arabin would have to learn all this about Mr. Slope! She told herself that she hated him, and she knew that she was lying to herself as she did so. She had no consolation but her baby, and of that she made the most. Mary, though she could not surmise what it was that had so violently affected her sister-in-law, saw at once that her grief was too great to be kept under control and waited patiently till the child should be in his cradle. "You'll have some tea, Eleanor," she said. "Oh, I don't care," said she, though in fact she must have been very hungry, for she had eaten nothing at Ullathorne. Mary quietly made the tea, and buttered the bread, laid aside the cloak, and made things look comfortable. "He's fast asleep," said she; "you're very tired; let me take him up to bed." But Eleanor would not let her sister touch him. She looked wistfully at her baby's eyes, saw that they were lost in the deepest slumber, and then made a sort of couch for him on the sofa. She was determined that nothing should prevail upon her to let him out of her sight that night. "Come, Nelly," said Mary, "don't be cross with me. I at least have done nothing to offend you." "I an't cross," said Eleanor. "Are you angry then? Surely you can't be angry with me." "No, I an't angry—at least not with you." "If you are not, drink the tea I have made for you. I am sure you must want it." Eleanor did drink it, and allowed herself to be persuaded. She ate and drank, and as the inner woman was recruited she felt a little more charitable towards the world at large. At last she found words to begin her story, and before she went to bed she had made a clean breast of it and told everything—everything, that is, as to the lovers she had rejected; of Mr. Arabin she said not a word. "I know I was wrong," said she, speaking of the blow she had given to Mr. Slope; "but I didn't know what he might do, and I had to protect myself." "He richly deserved it," said Mary. "Deserved it!" said Eleanor, whose mind as regarded Mr. Slope was almost bloodthirsty. "Had I stabbed him with a dagger, he would have deserved it. But what will they say about it at Plumstead?" "I don't think I should tell them," said Mary. Eleanor began to think that she would not. There could have been no kinder comforter than Mary Bold. There was not the slightest dash of triumph about her when she heard of the Stanhope scheme, nor did she allude to her former opinion when Eleanor called her late friend Charlotte a base, designing woman. She re-echoed all the abuse that was heaped on Mr. Slope's head and never hinted that she had said as much before. "I told you so, I told you so!" is the croak of a true Job's comforter. But Mary, when she found her friend lying in her sorrow and scraping herself with potsherds, forbore to argue and to exult. Eleanor acknowledged the merit of the forbearance, and at length allowed herself to be tranquilised. On the next day she did not go out of the house. Barchester she thought would be crowded with Stanhopes and Slopes; perhaps also with Arabins and Grantlys. Indeed, there was hardly anyone among her friends whom she could have met without some cause of uneasiness. In the course of the afternoon she heard that the dean was dead, and she also heard that Mr. Quiverful had been finally appointed to the hospital. In the evening her father came to her, and then the story, or as much of it as she could bring herself to tell him, had to be repeated. He was not in truth much surprised at Mr. Slope's effrontery, but he was obliged to act as though he had been to save his daughter's feelings. He was, however, anything but skilful in his deceit, and she saw through it. "I see," said she, "that you think it only in the common course of things that Mr. Slope should have treated me in this way." She had said nothing to him about the embrace, nor yet of the way in which it had been met. "I do not think it at all strange," said he, "that anyone should admire my Eleanor." "It is strange to me," said she, "that any man should have so much audacity, without ever having received the slightest encouragement." To this Mr. Harding answered nothing. With the archdeacon it would have been the text for a rejoinder which would not have disgraced Bildad the Shuhite. "But you'll tell the archdeacon?" asked Mr. Harding. "Tell him what?" said she sharply. "Or Susan?" continued Mr. Harding. "You'll tell Susan; you'll let them know that they wronged you in supposing that this man's addresses would be agreeable to you." "They may find that out their own way," said she; "I shall not ever willingly mention Mr. Slope's name to either of them." "But I may." "I have no right to hinder you from doing anything that may be necessary to your own comfort, but pray do not do it for my sake. Dr. Grantly never thought well of me, and never will. I don't know now that I am even anxious that he should do so." And then they went to the affair of the hospital. "But is it true, Papa?" "What, my dear?" said he. "About the dean? Had I gone back to the hospital, I should have had endless contentions with the bishop, contentions with his chaplain, and contentions with the archdeacon. I am not up to this now; I am not able to meet such troubles; and therefore I am not ill-pleased to find myself left to the little church of St. Cuthbert's. I shall never starve," added he, laughing, "as long as you are here." "But will you come and live with me, Papa?" she said earnestly, taking him by both his hands. Mr. Harding, however, did not allow himself to be talked over into giving up his own and only little in the High Street. He promised to come and dine with his daughter, and stay with her, and visit her, and do everything but absolutely live with her. It did not suit the peculiar feelings of the man to tell his daughter that though she had rejected Mr. Slope, and been ready to reject Mr. Stanhope, some other more favoured suitor would probably soon appear, and that on the appearance of such a suitor the big front bedroom might perhaps be more frequently in requisition than at present. But doubtless such an idea crossed his mind, and added its weight to the other reasons which made him decide on still keeping the close, odious little room in High Street. pied à terre The evening passed over quietly and in comfort. Eleanor was always happier with her father than with anyone else. He had not, perhaps, any natural taste for baby-worship, but he was always ready to sacrifice himself, and therefore made an excellent third in a trio with his daughter and Mary Bold in singing the praises of the wonderful child. They were standing together over their music in the evening, the baby having again been put to bed upon the sofa, when the servant brought in a very small note in a beautiful pink envelope. It quite filled the room with perfume as it lay upon the small salver. Mary Bold and Mrs. Bold were both at the piano, and Mr. Harding was sitting close to them, with the violoncello between his legs, so that the elegancy of the epistle was visible to them all. "Please ma'am, Dr. Stanhope's coachman says he is to wait for an answer," said the servant. Eleanor got very red in the face as she took the note in her hand. She had never seen the writing before. Charlotte's epistles, to which she was well accustomed, were of a very different style and kind. She generally wrote on large note-paper; she twisted up her letters into the shape and sometimes into the size of cocked hats; she addressed them in a sprawling, manly hand, and not unusually added a blot or a smudge, as though such were her own peculiar sign-manual. The address of this note was written in a beautiful female hand, and the gummed wafer bore on it an impress of a gilt coronet. Though Eleanor had never seen such a one before, she guessed that it came from the signora. Such epistles were very numerously sent out from any house in which the signora might happen to be dwelling, but they were rarely addressed to ladies. When the coachman was told by the lady's maid to take the letter to Mrs. Bold, he openly expressed his opinion that there was some mistake about it. Whereupon the lady's maid boxed the coachman's ears. Had Mr. Slope seen in how meek a spirit the coachman took the rebuke, he might have learnt a useful lesson, both in philosophy and religion. The note was as follows. It may be taken as a faithful promise that no further letter whatever shall be transcribed at length in these pages. My dear Mrs. Bold, May I ask you, as a great favour, to call on me to-morrow. You can say what hour will best suit you, but quite early, if you can. I need hardly say that if I could call upon you, I should not take this liberty with you. I partly know what occurred the other day, and I promise you that you shall meet with no annoyance if you will come to me. My brother leaves us for London to-day; from thence he goes to Italy. It will probably occur to you that I should not thus intrude on you, unless I had that to say to you which may be of considerable moment. Last month, I encountered a tweet from Nigerian journalist Ganiu Oloruntade. He wrote: If you stopped reading this article and clicked this to find the tweet, you'd see my “Amen” response alongside a sad emoji. AI won't take my job in Jesus's name. link Despite being a journalist at a crucial time for Africa's tech ecosystem, I worry about my prospects. I worry for my colleagues, too. After all, we live in a lower-middle-income country rife with unemployment. Ironically, the media isn't helping matters. As the buzz grows, more outlets dedicate reporters to chronicle its remarkable yet scary journey. So, you see why I replied to Ganiu's tweet with an ? AI Amen When to the public, I witnessed first-hand its capabilities. I wasn't alone. On social media, Reddit groups, and even during casual conversations with friends, there was a reminder of AI being a powerful force. OpenAI released ChatGPT With AI's fast-rising popularity came concerns about its long-term impacts. Many feared their jobs would become obsolete. From the retail store worker to the high-earning software developer, the fear of unemployment is mutual. Last month, an email sent to staff by one of Europe's leading newspapers, Bild, caused great controversy. According to , Bild wrote that it would lay off workers across job verticals, including proofreaders, editorial directors, and secretaries. reports However, Bild eventually the issue. Contrary to earlier reports of AI taking over jobs in the company, the German company said the statement originally announced a “ ” clarified restructuring program for regional newspaper editions. Essentially, it planned to cut back on regional editions and offices, bringing the number to 12 and 10, respectively. Despite being a false alarm, it's hard to ignore the likelihood of it happening. But can AI truly replace journalists, the vanguards of truth? What the humans think For this story, I spoke with an extensive list of journalists to know what it would mean if AI-powered tools did supplant them. I share my opinion, too, but that's for later. While Ephraim Modise foresees an increased usage of , he strongly believes that they can't “ .” “ ,” Modise explains. AI tools exceed writers' input The analogy I like the most about the impact of AI in journalism is that of autopilot and a human pilot in a plane. No matter how good the former gets, it is very unlikely that we will see a passenger-carrying plane flying solely on autopilot with no pilot in the cockpit because that human element will always be a necessity Speaking of AI tools, a vast portfolio exists. For journalists, there's Otter, a note-taking app; QuillBot, a paraphrasing tool; and tons more. Kishalaya Kundu isn't averse to collaborating with such tools, provided they don't take his job. Unlike Modise, he believes AI is close to a comprehensive takeover of journalism.  If not this year, many in the next couple, he notes. Blending the opinions of Modise and Kundu, veteran journalist Charles Lee Matthews thinks highly of AI and calls it “ .” However, they disagree that AI can potentially do what journalists do. Interestingly,  he concludes by saying editors, not writers, should bother about AI writing tools. human-dependent self-edit AI-led revolution What I believe Seeking an escape from reality and later self-development, I read books at an early age. I discovered newspapers early, too, and that helped me decide on becoming a storyteller. I understand the passion that drives people to tell all kinds of stories, especially difficult ones. I'm grateful for AI tools like note-taking apps because they handle that, enabling me to pay adequate attention to my source during interactions. Although I could do that while scribbling their words, AI optimizes the interview experience. Like my colleagues, I don't think we're ready to be replaced. Honestly, I don't believe we can. While an may appeal to low-tier outlets looking to cut salary costs through layoffs, what happens when it commits an error? AI tools are incredible, but they're not invulnerable to mistakes. AI-driven news-writing tool In January this year, for using AI to write articles. I recall how terrified I was because the end seemed near. Shortly after, the platform discovered several errors in many of the AI-generated content. How happy I felt. Journalists will likely retain their jobs for the foreseeable future, though there may be adjustments. CNET made headlines Thoughts on working with AI tools full-time Last month, Google showcased Genesis, an AI tool it claimed can write news stories. The preview was exclusive to representatives from the Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal. According to , a media executive saw the tool as more of an assistant than a journalist. The Verge It's worth noting that Google doesn't think tools can replicate the human effort that goes into journalism. The tech giant sees them as helpers. When asked how open-minded they'd be using AI tools if directed by their employer, the journalists I spoke to liked the idea. “ ,” Modise said. As aforementioned, I look at these tools as autopilots and myself as the pilot in the writing process. They help me do repetitive tasks which don't require the human element, and I can focus on more human-centric tasks like doing interviews, chasing sources, etc. Recall that Kundu also had no issue with the idea so long he got to keep his job. From my end, working with AI tools isn't a terrible idea. As Matthews said, AI can free us from repetitive tasks so we can focus on making stories that echo creativity and truth.
