Also, consider outsourcing or making some roles part-time in design, coding, marketing, legal and accounting services. When it comes to employee perks, think twice. Some startups cross off these benefits, but this isn’t right. Most companies don’t send their teams to exotic islands, and having some bananas in the office is nice and won’t cost you much. In December 2022, the team saw they couldn’t cover their burn using available funds and cash collections. They had made changes to the product in mid-2022 but needed time to see how it would affect sales and revenue. At that point, the startup was running out of money. For the months ahead, the team planned cost-cutting combined with growth activities, intended to help the company approach zero burn. The startup suspended new R&D initiatives to focus on growing and selling its existing product. It also gave up the office, some subscriptions, and laid off part of the sales, marketing, development, and customer support specialists. However, the team reduction was minimal to allow the company to keep growing. The same logic applied to marketing budgets. Costs were capped so that growing revenues would cause a gradual decrease in burn. Also, the startup received convertible loans (CLAs) from investors and business angels and later obtained a credit line to cover cash gaps during the initial period of plan implementation. By actively securing annual deals with clients paid upfront, the startup achieved a positive cash flow while keeping an optimal net burn. In less than a year, by December 2023, its monthly revenue grew by 75%. Сommunicate Cost-Cutting Smoothly The CEO shouldn’t just come and say to cut budgets and let half of the team go. C-level executives must consult with team leads and create a plan together — don’t just “inform” people. Define why you should cut costs, how much, which costs, and then communicate it with the team. Explain the reasons for downsizing to everyone, and say that the business isn’t closing but needs to be optimized. Setting priorities for this period and choosing a North Star metric can be helpful. Startups exist as long as they have money in the bank — it seems so simple, but founders often overlook this aspect being busy building their company. Meanwhile, empty coffers are the top reason why startups fail. According to CBInsights, 38% of startups shut down because they run out of cash or fail to attract new funding. 38% 38% It's a common scenario when startups spend a lot and are short on cash while expecting additional funding from investors. But this may not happen, and the company will close. Counting on existing funds and lowering the burn rate, instead, can prolong your runway. And this is the right thing to do: Given the market situation, a low burn is a good sign for investors to support a company. The principle is “earn more, spend less” (thanks, cap!). But what costs should companies cut? And how can they do it wisely? Drop Nice-to-Have Things Startups should trim non-vital expenses that have emerged over the past 1-2 years . Software subscriptions and office rent can eat up a big chunk of a startup’s budget — review what they cost you. 1-2 years List all services your team uses, and give up those not essential for daily operations, or downgrade them to cheaper or free plans. These could include CRMs, tools for project management or communication. Cloud storage costs can also add up quickly, so check them too . Did you say Bananas?

At , we’ve spent the past year working with a new long-range wireless called , designed specifically for the Internet of Things. Beep technology LoRa LoRa is different because, though it operates on unlicensed spectrum like Wi-Fi, it works at very long range. That means you can very easily deploy wireless sensors across an entire corporate campus, or track assets on a large site, with a single access point. So instead of just covering one home, an access point can cover several miles. It also supports multiple access-points or towers, meaning cellular-like networks, for the Internet of Things. You probably don’t believe me when I say of range. You shouldn’t yet. Every year a new wireless technology comes along claiming insane range that doesn’t pan out in the real world. Manufacturers tout ranges based on line-of-sight deployments with no interference. That’s all fine and good, but irrelevant for most real-world deployments. miles (By the way, we know of a LoRa deployment achieving line-of-sight, with a very tall tower in rural California. But really, who cares?) 100 miles We’ve been testing our system here in San Francisco, which is probably the toughest place to build a wireless network in the US, due to interference (lots of other radios) and topology (lots of hills). But our sensors still get several miles of range. We’d like to share some more granular data on network quality, that’s coming later. To start, here’s a map tracing out a route I took on my scooter, testing out the range of our sensors and a single tower on the roof of our office. This certainly not a scientific, and it’s not representative of high-quality coverage. But we found it to be an interesting snapshot and thought we’d share. If you’re testing LoRa radios, we hope you’ll do the same. (We’ll even have hardware you can use for testing soon.) First, here’s a quick look at the trip. It may not make a lot of sense until I talk it through, so please read on. Okay, let‘s break this down. Here’s the “tower.” It’s our LoRa gateway — the equivalent of a cell tower. It has a 6dB-gain antenna, and this one’s solar powered, just for fun. It’s on the roof of our 2-story office. Both of the buildings next to us are taller than ours, so it’s not a great location, but it’s not bad. Consider it a B+ site. “Tower” on the top of Beep Networks HQ, 21st and Mission Here’s where it is on the map. Now, the test setup. I put this sensor in my backpack, with its big whip antenna (~3 dB gain) hanging out the side. Inside the blue box is a LoRa radio operating at 27 dBm (500 mW). That’s quite a bit higher power than a standard off-the-shelf LoRa radio — we boost the signal with a power amplifier. (It’s still within FCC limits, just a bit more complex design. Maximizing range is part of what we do here at Beep.) The sensor is set to send its location about every 10 seconds. It only transmits once, so if a packet is lost, it doesn’t show up on the map (in a standard setup you would retransmit several times if you don’t receive acknowledgement, but we turned that off). LoRaWAN The line that connects the dots shows the order in which they were received, but it doesn’t show the actual path traveled. If you see a lot of dots right next to each other, that suggests that most packets are getting through. If you see gaps with no dots, no packets got through in that area. So every circle on the map is a point where the sensor got a GPS fix and transmitted its location back to our tower. This is not a complete picture of network coverage. It’s a very forgiving test, really. For coverage testing we look at error rate (% of packets that were not received + packets that were received with errors / total number of packets transmitted). You’ll always lose some packets, which is okay, wi-fi works the same way. You just need a high enough percentage of them to get through to consider an area covered by your network. It’s better to consider this a test of range, not of coverage. But I digress. Okay, on to: . We used to walk, but that’s not fast enough. Biking those hills is exhausting. Enter, the perfect range-testing transport vehicle: the Buddy 125 scooter. Transportation I rode this scooter West around Twin Peaks, then North to the Marina, and back. Then out around Giants Stadium in South of Market. Then South around Bernal Heights, to test all our local hills. If you’re not , we have a lot of hills. We’re in a relatively flat spot, the Mission neighborhood, but less than a mile in any direction there are hills. familiar with San Francisco Source: . Mike Ernst The results were interesting. Here’s that map again, with the data points. First, let’s look at the extreme end of the city. That’s the Marina Green, at the northern edge of San Francisco. I hung out there for a few minutes and the quality of the wireless connection was terrible, most packets transmitted by the tracker were lost. But a few of them got through. What’s surprising here is that any packets got through at all. Seriously, that’s in the way. There’s no way that signal got through the earth, it must have bounced off… something. 3.7 miles away and there’s a 250-foot hill Even more amazing, look at the point marked on the map. Now, to be clear, I was cruising around Forest Hill for like 10 minutes, and only one packet got through. But it shouldn’t have. That’s on the other side of Twin Peaks, which is basically a small mountain in the middle of San Francisco, about 1,000 feet high. WTF Consider these links a fluke. You certainly couldn’t count on them. But — wow. It’s interesting to see the extremes. On the other hand, at the location marked “Climbing Pacific Heights,” I was riding up the South slope of Pacific Heights. That’s not line-of-sight to our tower, but it’s not too far off. You can see there were lots of dots even though I was cruising pretty fast, so the link quality there wasn’t bad. Getting up on a hill makes a big difference. Let’s look at one more interesting location: SoMa. This is 2.7 miles away from our tower. It’s pretty flat along the route, but there are plenty of tall (5–10 story) buildings in the way. As I was cruising down Bryant Street towards the water, the link was pretty good. Bryant is a large open road, and while it’s nothing like line-of-sight, there’s plenty of open space for radio signals to bounce around. As soon as I got to the water and turned the corner, I lost the connection (notice, no dots along Embarcadero, except where it intersects another large road). The implication is that the signal doesn’t do a good job passing buildings, but it does just fine bouncing them, when there’s a nice broad street. So, on a grid-based city, you might have a few miles of range down the but far less on the . Or something like that. through around avenues streets Once again, network coverage is a function of the topology and layout of the city as much as the radio’s spec sheet. This is a local game. Are you expecting to cash out in November 2025 and buy some Lambos? If so, you need to trade the market. When you trade, you’re trying to make money from changes in the prices of cryptos. You don’t want crypto. You want to sell it for more of your government’s money. Buying is simply the cost of doing business. This means you will identify entries, exits, stop-losses, and take-profit targets. You may follow the news, read roadmaps and whitepapers, or research key events that make for good buying or selling opportunities. You keep as little money in the market as necessary and wait for momentum to shift. Then, after the market has gone up a little bit, you buy. After the market has gone down a little bit, you sell. While an investor will aim to get ahead of the market, you will wait for the market to act and then ride the momentum whichever way it goes. You don't worry as much about what happens today or how much cash you can get out of the market. You want to make sure that you are in a position to take care of yourself for as long as you need to. When you invest, you find projects that will likely grow and succeed, then buy their tokens, stake those tokens for passive income, delegate them for rewards, or deposit them into liquidity pools for a portion of fees and perhaps incentives from using them. When you do this, it’s like earning dividends or interest and recycling the profits back into the market to compound month after month, like a snowball. You can also leverage your tokens in other ways, for example, to buy land or items in a metaverse, participate in play-to-earn games, mint NFTs, become a validator, run a node, and participate in the communities that grow around the tokens. Both make money in different ways You can do well with either approach, but you need to pick one. What drives success in one approach will drive failure in the other. For example, as an investor, you will lock up your tokens for weeks or months for passive rewards and income. Free crypto! That’s terrible if you’re a trader. It defeats the whole point! You don’t want to keep the tokens. You want to sell them as soon as possible! On the other hand, when you lock up your tokens, you have to accept all the volatility that comes your way. You have to sit through big upswings and downswings. Some altcoins will go up or down 50% in a week, sometimes in a day. When you need to sell, it may not be on your terms. As a trader, you will buy after prices go up and sell after prices drop. That may fly in the face of the adage, “buy low, sell high,” but that is not a trading strategy. When you trade, you may buy high to sell higher or sell low and then short the market. As one trader put it, you play for the middle of the field, not the red zone. This makes no sense for an investor. The whole point is to build a position before the market turns so that you can capture limitless upside. Traders can't expose their capital like that. They need to wait until there's less upside because they need clarity about the market's direction. In other words, you can't trade and invest with the same money. Pick one. Options abound Some people split their portfolios into a separate trading account and investment account. Others take an investor’s approach but try to time their entries and exits. Imagine discovering an investment that goes up 50% on average each year with occasional big drops that you can buy for even further gains. Would you buy it?
