What inspired your transition from being a partner at Big Four to becoming a co-founder at Silverbird? I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Being a partner in a Big Four firm is a lot like being an entrepreneur. You have to figure out what your clients need, do business development, build teams, and, in the end, it's all on you to make a profit. Your choices define your success. Silverbird became one of those big choices – our vision to assist cross-border small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could be a game-changer, potentially reaching unicorn status. It's a sizable market often ignored by larger banks that typically concentrate on consumers and big corporations. Beyond its business potential, this idea also has a strong element of making a positive impact on the world. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often face extra compliance hurdles, leading to the unfortunate rejection of many legitimate SMEs by larger banks. The cost of comprehensive compliance checks has hindered their growth. However, we've developed an innovative approach, utilizing global datasets and cutting-edge ML and AI technologies, to reliably verify these small businesses at a lower cost. How has your previous career background contributed to your role as a co-founder at Silverbird? What unique perspectives do you bring from there? During my consulting career, I was enjoying the opportunity to work with banks and various financial firms. On the functional side, I was working a lot with data and technology. I implemented data-driven customer profiling, unified datasets across multiple IT platform to enhance business analytics, built compliance engines, processing large volume of data and documents about counterparties to meet regulatory requirements, etc. Starting a cross-border payments business, with its huge potential, was something very interesting to me. Moreover, my extensive client interactions provided me with a deep understanding of what works and what doesn't work. This knowledge extends beyond just the technological aspects; it encompasses working effectively with customers, managing large sales and operations teams, creating well-balanced organizations, motivating people, understanding investor expectations, and various other facets of business strategy. This wealth of experience has proven invaluable when embarking on entrepreneurial ventures — it has helped avoid many mistakes and grow faster. With your extensive background as a startup co-founder, could you share the most significant challenges you've faced and how did you overcome them? In any organization, your team is your most valuable asset. In a startup, where you have a small team initially, each team member has a much larger impact than in corporations with thousands of people. So, you really need to invest a lot of time to try and find the right contributor who would also fit into your team culturally. As your startup grows and you bring in junior team members, you also have to invest a significant amount of time in training and developing their skills. At Silverbird, where innovative compliance technologies are at the center of what we do, I was lucky enough to attract top-caliber senior talent and build a team comprising over 20 AML professionals and enthusiasts who not only align with our vision but also consistently contribute to enhancing our data sources and refining our KYC/AML tools. Another significant challenge for a startup is the constraint of limited budgets, especially when you have a lot to accomplish. To succeed, it's crucial to maintain laser focus on initiatives that yield rapid results. In our case, we concentrated on three to four key initiatives: identifying the right payment rails, establishing robust compliance processes, and forming sales and customer excellence teams. With these foundations, we began serving clients just nine months after our launch despite operating in a regulated space that required approval by authorities. As we started onboarding new customers daily, we gained real-time feedback that guided our next priorities. Early revenue generation also garnered recognition from investors, and within three years, our valuation approached $70 million. THE THOUGHTS OF YOUTH The sunshine of a day in early spring, honey pale and honey sweet, was showering over the red brick buildings of Queenslea College and the grounds about them, throwing through the bare, budding maples and elms, delicate, evasive etchings of gold and brown on the paths, and coaxing into life the daffodils that were peering greenly and perkily up under the windows of the co-eds’ dressing-room. A young April wind, as fresh and sweet as if it had been blowing over the fields of memory instead of through dingy streets, was purring in the tree-tops and whipping the loose tendrils of the ivy network which covered the front of the main building. It was a wind that sang of many things, but what it sang to each listener was only what was in that listener’s heart. To the college students who had just been capped and diplomad by “Old Charlie,” the grave president of Queenslea, in the presence of an admiring throng of parents and sisters, sweethearts and friends, it sang, perchance, of glad hope and shining success and high achievement. It sang of the dreams of youth that may never be quite fulfilled, but are well worth the dreaming for all that. God help the man who has never known such dreams—who, as he leaves his alma mater, is not already rich in aerial castles, the proprietor of many a spacious estate in Spain. He has missed his birthright. The crowd streamed out of the entrance hall and scattered over the campus, fraying off into the many streets beyond. Eric Marshall and David Baker walked away together. The former had graduated in Arts that day at the head of his class; the latter had come to see the graduation, nearly bursting with pride in Eric’s success. Between these two was an old and tried and enduring friendship, although David was ten years older than Eric, as the mere tale of years goes, and a hundred years older in knowledge of the struggles and difficulties of life which age a man far more quickly and effectually than the passing of time. Physically the two men bore no resemblance to one another, although they were second cousins. Eric Marshall, tall, broad-shouldered, sinewy, walking with a free, easy stride, which was somehow suggestive of reserve strength and power, was one of those men regarding whom less-favoured mortals are tempted seriously to wonder why all the gifts of fortune should be showered on one individual. He was not only clever and good to look upon, but he possessed that indefinable charm of personality which is quite independent of physical beauty or mental ability. He had steady, grayish-blue eyes, dark chestnut hair with a glint of gold in its waves when the sunlight struck it, and a chin that gave the world assurance of a chin. He was a rich man’s son, with a clean young manhood behind him and splendid prospects before him. He was considered a practical sort of fellow, utterly guiltless of romantic dreams and visions of any sort. “I am afraid Eric Marshall will never do one quixotic thing,” said a Queenslea professor, who had a habit of uttering rather mysterious epigrams, “but if he ever does it will supply the one thing lacking in him.” David Baker was a short, stocky fellow with an ugly, irregular, charming face; his eyes were brown and keen and secretive; his mouth had a comical twist which became sarcastic, or teasing, or winning, as he willed. His voice was generally as soft and musical as a woman’s; but some few who had seen David Baker righteously angry and heard the tones which then issued from his lips were in no hurry to have the experience repeated. He was a doctor—a specialist in troubles of the throat and voice—and he was beginning to have a national reputation. He was on the staff of the Queenslea Medical College and it was whispered that before long he would be called to fill an important vacancy at McGill. He had won his way to success through difficulties and drawbacks which would have daunted most men. In the year Eric was born David Baker was an errand boy in the big department store of Marshall & Company. Thirteen years later he graduated with high honors from Queenslea Medical College. Mr. Marshall had given him all the help which David’s sturdy pride could be induced to accept, and now he insisted on sending the young man abroad for a post-graduate course in London and Germany. David Baker had eventually repaid every cent Mr. Marshall had expended on him; but he never ceased to cherish a passionate gratitude to the kind and generous man; and he loved that man’s son with a love surpassing that of brothers. He had followed Eric’s college course with keen, watchful interest. It was his wish that Eric should take up the study of law or medicine now that he was through Arts; and he was greatly disappointed that Eric should have finally made up his mind to go into business with his father. “It’s a clean waste of your talents,” he grumbled, as they walked home from the college. “You’d win fame and distinction in law—that glib tongue of yours was meant for a lawyer and it is sheer flying in the face of Providence to devote it to commercial uses—a flat crossing of the purposes of destiny. Where is your ambition, man?” “In the right place,” answered Eric, with his ready laugh. “It is not your kind, perhaps, but there is room and need for all kinds in this lusty young country of ours. Yes, I am going into the business. In the first place, it has been father’s cherished desire ever since I was born, and it would hurt him pretty badly if I backed out now. He wished me to take an Arts course because he believed that every man should have as liberal an education as he can afford to get, but now that I have had it he wants me in the firm.” “He wouldn’t oppose you if he thought you really wanted to go in for something else.” “Not he. But I don’t really want to—that’s the point, David, man. You hate a business life so much yourself that you can’t get it into your blessed noddle that another man might like it. There are many lawyers in the world—too many, perhaps—but there are never too many good honest men of business, ready to do clean big things for the betterment of humanity and the upbuilding of their country, to plan great enterprises and carry them through with brain and courage, to manage and control, to aim high and strike one’s aim. There, I’m waxing eloquent, so I’d better stop. But ambition, man! Why, I’m full of it—it’s bubbling in every pore of me. I mean to make the department store of Marshall & Company famous from ocean to ocean. Father started in life as a poor boy from a Nova Scotian farm. He has built up a business that has a provincial reputation. I mean to carry it on. In five years it shall have a maritime reputation, in ten, a Canadian. I want to make the firm of Marshall & Company stand for something big in the commercial interests of Canada. Isn’t that as honourable an ambition as trying to make black seem white in a court of law, or discovering some new disease with a harrowing name to torment poor creatures who might otherwise die peacefully in blissful ignorance of what ailed them?” “When you begin to make poor jokes it is time to stop arguing with you,” said David, with a shrug of his fat shoulders. “Go your own gait and dree your own weird. I’d as soon expect success in trying to storm the citadel single-handed as in trying to turn you from any course about which you had once made up your mind. Whew, this street takes it out of a fellow! What could have possessed our ancestors to run a town up the side of a hill? I’m not so slim and active as I was on MY graduation day ten years ago. By the way, what a lot of co-eds were in your class—twenty, if I counted right. When I graduated there were only two ladies in our class and they were the pioneers of their sex at Queenslea. They were well past their first youth, very grim and angular and serious; and they could never have been on speaking terms with a mirror in their best days. But mark you, they were excellent females—oh, very excellent. Times have changed with a vengeance, judging from the line-up of co-eds to-day. There was one girl there who can’t be a day over eighteen—and she looked as if she were made out of gold and roseleaves and dewdrops.” “The oracle speaks in poetry,” laughed Eric. “That was Florence Percival, who led the class in mathematics, as I’m a living man. By many she is considered the beauty of her class. I can’t say that such is my opinion. I don’t greatly care for that blonde, babyish style of loveliness—I prefer Agnes Campion. Did you notice her—the tall, dark girl with the ropes of hair and a sort of crimson, velvety bloom on her face, who took honours in philosophy?” “I DID notice her,” said David emphatically, darting a keen side glance at his friend. “I noticed her most particularly and critically—for someone whispered her name behind me and coupled it with the exceedingly interesting information that Miss Campion was supposed to be the future Mrs. Eric Marshall. Whereupon I stared at her with all my eyes.” “There is no truth in that report,” said Eric in a tone of annoyance. “Agnes and I are the best of friends and nothing more. I like and admire her more than any woman I know; but if the future Mrs. Eric Marshall exists in the flesh I haven’t met her yet. I haven’t even started out to look for her—and don’t intend to for some years to come. I have something else to think of,” he concluded, in a tone of contempt, for which anyone might have known he would be punished sometime if Cupid were not deaf as well as blind. “You’ll meet the lady of the future some day,” said David dryly. “And in spite of your scorn I venture to predict that if fate doesn’t bring her before long you’ll very soon start out to look for her. A word of advice, oh, son of your mother. When you go courting take your common sense with you.” “Do you think I shall be likely to leave it behind?” asked Eric amusedly. “Well, I mistrust you,” said David, sagely wagging his head. “The Lowland Scotch part of you is all right, but there’s a Celtic streak in you, from that little Highland grandmother of yours, and when a man has that there’s never any knowing where it will break out, or what dance it will lead him, especially when it comes to this love-making business. You are just as likely as not to lose your head over some little fool or shrew for the sake of her outward favour and make yourself miserable for life. When you pick you a wife please remember that I shall reserve the right to pass a candid opinion on her.” “Pass all the opinions you like, but it is MY opinion, and mine only, which will matter in the long run,” retorted Eric. “Confound you, yes, you stubborn offshoot of a stubborn breed,” growled David, looking at him affectionately. “I know that, and that is why I’ll never feel at ease about you until I see you married to the right sort of a girl. She’s not hard to find. Nine out of ten girls in this country of ours are fit for kings’ palaces. But the tenth always has to be reckoned with.” “You are as bad as Clever Alice in the fairy tale who worried over the future of her unborn children,” protested Eric. “Clever Alice has been very unjustly laughed at,” said David gravely. “We doctors know that. Perhaps she overdid the worrying business a little, but she was perfectly right in principle. If people worried a little more about their unborn children—at least, to the extent of providing a proper heritage, physically, mentally, and morally, for them—and then stopped worrying about them after they ARE born, this world would be a very much pleasanter place to live in, and the human race would make more progress in a generation than it has done in recorded history.” “Oh, if you are going to mount your dearly beloved hobby of heredity I am not going to argue with you, David, man. But as for the matter of urging me to hasten and marry me a wife, why don’t you”—It was on Eric’s lips to say, “Why don’t you get married to a girl of the right sort yourself and set me a good example?” But he checked himself. He knew that there was an old sorrow in David Baker’s life which was not to be unduly jarred by the jests even of privileged friendship. He changed his question to, “Why don’t you leave this on the knees of the gods where it properly belongs? I thought you were a firm believer in predestination, David.” “Well, so I am, to a certain extent,” said David cautiously. “I believe, as an excellent old aunt of mine used to say, that what is to be will be and what isn’t to be happens sometimes. And it is precisely such unchancy happenings that make the scheme of things go wrong. I dare say you think me an old fogy, Eric; but I know something more of the world than you do, and I believe, with Tennyson’s Arthur, that ‘there’s no more subtle master under heaven than is the maiden passion for a maid.’ I want to see you safely anchored to the love of some good woman as soon as may be, that’s all. I’m rather sorry Miss Campion isn’t your lady of the future. I liked her looks, that I did. She is good and strong and true—and has the eyes of a woman who could love in a way that would be worth while. Moreover, she’s well-born, well-bred, and well-educated—three very indispensable things when it comes to choosing a woman to fill your mother’s place, friend of mine!” “I agree with you,” said Eric carelessly. “I could not marry any woman who did not fulfill those conditions. But, as I have said, I am not in love with Agnes Campion—and it wouldn’t be of any use if I were. She is as good as engaged to Larry West. You remember West?” “That thin, leggy fellow you chummed with so much your first two years in Queenslea? Yes, what has become of him?” “He had to drop out after his second year for financial reasons. He is working his own way through college, you know. For the past two years he has been teaching school in some out-of-the-way place over in Prince Edward Island. He isn’t any too well, poor fellow—never was very strong and has studied remorselessly. I haven’t heard from him since February. He said then that he was afraid he wasn’t going to be able to stick it out till the end of the school year. I hope Larry won’t break down. He is a fine fellow and worthy even of Agnes Campion. Well, here we are. Coming in, David?” “Not this afternoon—haven’t got time. I must mosey up to the North End to see a man who has got a lovely throat. Nobody can find out what is the matter. For a time at least they positively succeeded in converting the Sea Lady into a credible human invalid, in spite of the galaxy of witnesses to the lady’s landing and in spite of the severe internal dissensions that presently broke out. In spite, moreover, of the fact that one of the maids—they found out which only long after—told the whole story under vows to her very superior young man who told it next Sunday to a rising journalist who was sitting about on the Leas maturing a descriptive article. The rising journalist was incredulous. But he went about enquiring. In the end he thought it good enough to go upon. He found in several quarters a vague but sufficient rumour of a something; for the maid’s young man was a conversationalist when he had anything to say. [72] Finally the rising journalist went and sounded the people on the two chief Folkestone papers and found the thing had just got to them. They were inclined to pretend they hadn’t heard of it, after the fashion of local papers when confronted by the abnormal, but the atmosphere of enterprise that surrounded the rising journalist woke them up. He perceived he had done so and that he had no time to lose. So while they engaged in inventing representatives to enquire, he went off and telephoned to the Daily Gunfire and the New Paper. When they answered he was positive and earnest. He staked his reputation—the reputation of a rising journalist! [73] “I swear there’s something up,” he said. “Get in first—that’s all.” He had some reputation, I say—and he had staked it. The Daily Gunfire was sceptical but precise, and the New Paper sprang a headline “A Mermaid at last!” You might well have thought the thing was out after that, but it wasn’t. There are things one doesn’t believe even if they are printed in a halfpenny paper. To find the reporters hammering at their doors, so to speak, and fended off only for a time by a proposal that they should call again; to see their incredible secret glaringly in print, did indeed for a moment seem a hopeless exposure to both the Buntings and the Sea Lady. Already they could see the story spreading, could imagine the imminent rush of intimate enquiries, the tripod strides of a multitude of cameras, the crowds watching the windows, the horrors of a great publicity. All the Buntings and Mabel were aghast, simply aghast. Adeline was not so much aghast as excessively annoyed at this imminent and, so far as she was concerned, absolutely irrelevant publicity. “They will never dare—” she said, and “Consider how it affects Harry!” and at the earliest opportunity she retired to her own room. The others, with a certain disregard of her offence, sat around the Sea Lady’s couch—she had scarcely touched her breakfast—and canvassed the coming terror. [74] “They will put our photographs in the papers,” said the elder Miss Bunting. “Well, they won’t put mine in,” said her sister. “It’s horrid. He heard of the Buntings’ shrinking terror of publicity as soon as he arrived, a perfect clamour—an almost exultant clamour indeed, of shrinking terror, and he caught the Sea Lady’s eye and took his line there and then. [76] “It’s not an occasion for sticking at trifles, Mrs. Bunting,” he said. “But I think we can save the situation all the same. You’re too hopeless. We must put our foot down at once; that’s all. Let see these reporter fellows and write to the London dailies. I think I can take a line that will settle them.” me “Eh?” said Fred. “I can take a line that will stop it, trust me.” “What, altogether?” “Altogether.” “How?” said Fred and Mrs. Bunting. “You’re not going to bribe them!” “Bribe!” said Mr. Bunting. “We’re not in France. You can’t bribe a British paper.” (A sort of subdued cheer went around from the assembled Buntings.) [77] “You leave it to me,” said Melville, in his element. And with earnestly expressed but not very confident wishes for his success, they did. He managed the thing admirably. “What’s this about a mermaid?” he demanded of the local journalists when they returned. They travelled together for company, being, so to speak, emergency journalists, compositors in their milder moments, and unaccustomed to these higher aspects of journalism. “What’s this about a mermaid?” repeated my cousin, while they waived precedence dumbly one to another. “I believe some one’s been letting you in,” said my cousin Melville. “Just imagine!—a mermaid!” “That’s what we thought,” said the younger of the two emergency journalists. “We knew it was some sort of hoax, you know. Only the New Paper giving it a headline——” [78] “I’m amazed even Banghurst—” said my cousin Melville. “It’s in the Daily Gunfire as well,” said the older of the two emergency journalists. “What’s one more or less of these ha’penny fever rags?” cried my cousin with a ringing scorn. “Surely you’re not going to take your Folkestone news from mere London papers.” “But how did the story come about?” began the older emergency journalist. “That’s not my affair.” The younger emergency journalist had an inspiration. He produced a note book from his breast pocket. “Perhaps, sir, you wouldn’t mind suggesting to us something we might say——” My cousin Melville complied. [79] II The rising young journalist who had first got wind of the business—who must not for a moment be confused with the two emergency journalists heretofore described—came to Banghurst next night in a state of strange exultation. “I’ve been through with it and I’ve seen her,” he panted. “I waited about outside and saw her taken into the carriage. I’ve talked to one of the maids—I got into the house under pretence of being a telephone man to see their telephone—I spotted the wire—and it’s a fact. A positive fact—she’s a mermaid with a tail—a proper mermaid’s tail. I’ve got here——” He displayed sheets. “Whaddyer talking about?” said Banghurst from his littered desk, eyeing the sheets with apprehensive animosity. [80] “The mermaid—there really a mermaid. At Folkestone.” is Banghurst turned away from him and pawed at his pen tray. “Whad if there is!” he said after a pause. “But it’s proved. That note you printed——” “That note I printed was a mistake if there’s anything of that sort going, young man.” Banghurst remained an obstinate expansion of back. “How?” “We don’t deal in mermaids here.” “But you’re not going to let it drop?” “I am.” “But there she is!” “Let her be.” He turned on the rising young journalist, and his massive face was unusually massive and his voice fine and full and fruity. “Do you think we’re going to make our public believe anything simply because it’s true? They know perfectly well what they are going to believe and what they aren’t going to believe, and they aren’t going to believe anything about mermaids—you bet your hat. I don’t care if the whole damned beach was littered with mermaids—not the whole damned beach! We’ve got our reputation to keep up. See?… Look here!—you don’t learn journalism as I hoped you’d do. It was you what brought in all that stuff about a discovery in chemistry——” [81] “It’s true.” “Ugh!” “I had it from a Fellow of the Royal Society——” “Stuff that the public won’t believe aren’t facts.” “I don’t care if you had it from—anybody. Stuff that the public won’t believe aren’t facts. Being true only makes ’em worse. They buy our paper to swallow it and it’s got to go down easy. When I printed you that note and headline I thought you was up to a lark. I thought you was on to a mixed bathing scandal or something of that sort—with juice in it. The sort of thing that understand. You know when you went down to Folkestone you were going to describe what Salisbury and all the rest of them wear upon the Leas. And start a discussion on the acclimatisation of the café. And all that. And then you get on to this (unprintable epithet) nonsense!” [82] all “But Lord Salisbury—he doesn’t go to Folkestone.” Banghurst shrugged his shoulders over a hopeless case. “What the deuce,” he said, addressing his inkpot in plaintive tones, “does matter?” that The young man reflected. He addressed Banghurst’s back after a pause. His voice had flattened a little. “I might go over this and do it up as a lark perhaps. Make it a comic dialogue sketch with a man who really believed in it—or something like that. It’s a beastly lot of copy to get slumped, you know.” [83] “Nohow,” said Banghurst. “Not in any shape. No! Why! They’d think it clever. They’d think you was making game of them. They hate things they think are clever!” The young man made as if to reply, but Banghurst’s back expressed quite clearly that the interview was at an end. “Nohow,” repeated Banghurst just when it seemed he had finished altogether. “I may take it to the Gunfire then?” Banghurst suggested an alternative. “Very well,” said the young man, heated, “the Gunfire it is.” But in that he was reckoning without the editor of the Gunfire. [84] III It must have been quite soon after that, that I myself heard the first mention of the mermaid, little recking that at last it would fall to me to write her history. I was on one of my rare visits to London, and Micklethwaite was giving me lunch at the Penwiper Club, certainly one of the best dozen literary clubs in London. I noted the rising young journalist at a table near the door, lunching alone. All about him tables were vacant, though the other parts of the room were crowded. He sat with his face towards the door, and he kept looking up whenever any one came in, as if he expected some one who never came. Once distinctly I saw him beckon to a man, but the man did not respond. “Look here, Micklethwaite,” I said, “why is everybody avoiding that man over there? I noticed just now in the smoking-room that he seemed to be trying to get into conversation with some one and that a kind of taboo——” [85] Micklethwaite stared over his fork. “Ra-ther,” he said. “But what’s he done?” “He’s a fool,” said Micklethwaite with his mouth full, evidently annoyed. “Ugh,” he said as soon as he was free to do so. I waited a little while. “What’s he done?” I ventured. Micklethwaite did not answer for a moment and crammed things into his mouth vindictively, bread and all sorts of things. Then leaning towards me in a confidential manner he made indignant noises which I could not clearly distinguish as words. “Oh!” I said, when he had done. “Yes,” said Micklethwaite. He swallowed and then poured himself wine—splashing the tablecloth. [86] “He had for an hour very nearly the other day.” me “Yes?” I said. “Silly fool,” said Micklethwaite. I was afraid it was all over, but luckily he gave me an opening again after gulping down his wine. “He leads you on to argue,” he said. “That——?” “That he can’t prove it.” “Yes?” “And then he shows you he can. Just showing off how damned ingenious he is.” I was a little confused. “Prove what?” I asked. “Haven’t I been telling you?” said Micklethwaite, growing very red. “About this confounded mermaid of his at Folkestone.” [87] “He says there is one?” “Yes, he does,” said Micklethwaite, going purple and staring at me very hard. He seemed to ask mutely whether I of all people proposed to turn on him and back up this infamous scoundrel. I thought for a moment he would have apoplexy, but happily he remembered his duty as my host. So he turned very suddenly on a meditative waiter for not removing our plates. “Had any golf lately?” I said to Micklethwaite, when the plates and the remains of the waiter had gone away. Golf always does Micklethwaite good except when he is actually playing. Then, I am told— If I were Mrs. Bunting I should break off and raise my eyebrows and both hands at this point, to indicate how golf acts on Micklethwaite when he is playing. I turned my mind to feigning an interest in golf—a game that in truth I despise and hate as I despise and hate nothing else in this world. Imagine a great fat creature like Micklethwaite, a creature who ought to wear a turban and a long black robe to hide his grossness, whacking a little white ball for miles and miles with a perfect surgery of instruments, whacking it either with a babyish solemnity or a childish rage as luck may have decided, whacking away while his country goes to the devil, and incidentally training an innocent-eyed little boy to swear and be a tip-hunting loafer. That’s golf! However, I controlled my all too facile sneer and talked of golf and the relative merits of golf links as I might talk to a child about buns or distract a puppy with the whisper of “rats,” and when at last I could look at the rising young journalist again our lunch had come to an end. [88] I saw that he was talking with a greater air of freedom than it is usual to display to club waiters, to the man who held his coat. The man looked incredulous but respectful, and was answering shortly but politely. [89] When we went out this little conversation was still going on. The waiter was holding the rising young journalist’s soft felt hat and the rising young journalist was fumbling in his coat pocket with a thick mass of papers. “It’s tremendous. I’ve got most of it here,” he was saying as we went by. “I don’t know if you’d care——” “I get very little time for reading, sir,” the waiter was replying. The Pequod Meets The Rose-Bud. “In vain it was to rake for Ambergriese in the paunch of this Leviathan, insufferable fetor denying not inquiry.” Sir T. Browne, V.E. It was a week or two after the last whaling scene recounted, and when we were slowly sailing over a sleepy, vapory, mid-day sea, that the many noses on the Pequod’s deck proved more vigilant discoverers than the three pairs of eyes aloft. A peculiar and not very pleasant smell was smelt in the sea. “I will bet something now,” said Stubb, “that somewhere hereabouts are some of those drugged whales we tickled the other day. I thought they would keel up before long.” Presently, the vapors in advance slid aside; and there in the distance lay a ship, whose furled sails betokened that some sort of whale must be alongside. As we glided nearer, the stranger showed French colours from his peak; and by the eddying cloud of vulture sea-fowl that circled, and hovered, and swooped around him, it was plain that the whale alongside must be what the fishermen call a blasted whale, that is, a whale that has died unmolested on the sea, and so floated an unappropriated corpse. It may well be conceived, what an unsavory odor such a mass must exhale; worse than an Assyrian city in the plague, when the living are incompetent to bury the departed. So intolerable indeed is it regarded by some, that no cupidity could persuade them to moor alongside of it. Yet are there those who will still do it; notwithstanding the fact that the oil obtained from such subjects is of a very inferior quality, and by no means of the nature of attar-of-rose. Coming still nearer with the expiring breeze, we saw that the Frenchman had a second whale alongside; and this second whale seemed even more of a nosegay than the first. In truth, it turned out to be one of those problematical whales that seem to dry up and die with a sort of prodigious dyspepsia, or indigestion; leaving their defunct bodies almost entirely bankrupt of anything like oil. Nevertheless, in the proper place we shall see that no knowing fisherman will ever turn up his nose at such a whale as this, however much he may shun blasted whales in general. The Pequod had now swept so nigh to the stranger, that Stubb vowed he recognised his cutting spade-pole entangled in the lines that were knotted round the tail of one of these whales. “There’s a pretty fellow, now,” he banteringly laughed, standing in the ship’s bows, “there’s a jackal for ye! I well know that these Crappoes of Frenchmen are but poor devils in the fishery; sometimes lowering their boats for breakers, mistaking them for Sperm Whale spouts; yes, and sometimes sailing from their port with their hold full of boxes of tallow candles, and cases of snuffers, foreseeing that all the oil they will get won’t be enough to dip the Captain’s wick into; aye, we all know these things; but look ye, here’s a Crappo that is content with our leavings, the drugged whale there, I mean; aye, and is content too with scraping the dry bones of that other precious fish he has there. Poor devil! I say, pass round a hat, some one, and let’s make him a present of a little oil for dear charity’s sake. For what oil he’ll get from that drugged whale there, wouldn’t be fit to burn in a jail; no, not in a condemned cell. And as for the other whale, why, I’ll agree to get more oil by chopping up and trying out these three masts of ours, than he’ll get from that bundle of bones; though, now that I think of it, it may contain something worth a good deal more than oil; yes, ambergris. I wonder now if our old man has thought of that. It’s worth trying. Yes, I’m for it;” and so saying he started for the quarter-deck. By this time the faint air had become a complete calm; so that whether or no, the Pequod was now fairly entrapped in the smell, with no hope of escaping except by its breezing up again. Issuing from the cabin, Stubb now called his boat’s crew, and pulled off for the stranger. Drawing across her bow, he perceived that in accordance with the fanciful French taste, the upper part of her stem-piece was carved in the likeness of a huge drooping stalk, was painted green, and for thorns had copper spikes projecting from it here and there; the whole terminating in a symmetrical folded bulb of a bright red colour. Upon her head boards, in large gilt letters, he read “Bouton de Rose,”—Rose-button, or Rose-bud; and this was the romantic name of this aromatic ship. Though Stubb did not understand the Bouton part of the inscription, yet the word rose, and the bulbous figure-head put together, sufficiently explained the whole to him. “A wooden rose-bud, eh?” he cried with his hand to his nose, “that will do very well; but how like all creation it smells!” Now in order to hold direct communication with the people on deck, he had to pull round the bows to the starboard side, and thus come close to the blasted whale; and so talk over it. Arrived then at this spot, with one hand still to his nose, he bawled—“Bouton-de-Rose, ahoy! are there any of you Bouton-de-Roses that speak English?” “Yes,” rejoined a Guernsey-man from the bulwarks, who turned out to be the chief-mate. “Well, then, my Bouton-de-Rose-bud, have you seen the White Whale?” “What whale?” “The White Whale—a Sperm Whale—Moby Dick, have ye seen him? “Never heard of such a whale. Cachalot Blanche! White Whale—no.” “Very good, then; good bye now, and I’ll call again in a minute.” Then rapidly pulling back towards the Pequod, and seeing Ahab leaning over the quarter-deck rail awaiting his report, he moulded his two hands into a trumpet and shouted—“No, Sir! No!” Upon which Ahab retired, and Stubb returned to the Frenchman. He now perceived that the Guernsey-man, who had just got into the chains, and was using a cutting-spade, had slung his nose in a sort of bag. “What’s the matter with your nose, there?” said Stubb. “Broke it?” “I wish it was broken, or that I didn’t have any nose at all!” answered the Guernsey-man, who did not seem to relish the job he was at very much. “But what are you holding yours for?” “Oh, nothing! It’s a wax nose; I have to hold it on. Fine day, ain’t it? Air rather gardenny, I should say; throw us a bunch of posies, will ye, Bouton-de-Rose?” “What in the devil’s name do you want here?” roared the Guernseyman, flying into a sudden passion. “Oh! keep cool—cool? yes, that’s the word! why don’t you pack those whales in ice while you’re working at ’em? But joking aside, though; do you know, Rose-bud, that it’s all nonsense trying to get any oil out of such whales? As for that dried up one, there, he hasn’t a gill in his whole carcase.” “I know that well enough; but, d’ye see, the Captain here won’t believe it; this is his first voyage; he was a Cologne manufacturer before. But come aboard, and mayhap he’ll believe you, if he won’t me; and so I’ll get out of this dirty scrape.” “Anything to oblige ye, my sweet and pleasant fellow,” rejoined Stubb, and with that he soon mounted to the deck. There a queer scene presented itself. The sailors, in tasselled caps of red worsted, were getting the heavy tackles in readiness for the whales. But they worked rather slow and talked very fast, and seemed in anything but a good humor. All their noses upwardly projected from their faces like so many jib-booms. Now and then pairs of them would drop their work, and run up to the mast-head to get some fresh air. Some thinking they would catch the plague, dipped oakum in coal-tar, and at intervals held it to their nostrils. Others having broken the stems of their pipes almost short off at the bowl, were vigorously puffing tobacco-smoke, so that it constantly filled their olfactories. Stubb was struck by a shower of outcries and anathemas proceeding from the Captain’s round-house abaft; and looking in that direction saw a fiery face thrust from behind the door, which was held ajar from within. This was the tormented surgeon, who, after in vain remonstrating against the proceedings of the day, had betaken himself to the Captain’s round-house (cabinet he called it) to avoid the pest; but still, could not help yelling out his entreaties and indignations at times. Marking all this, Stubb argued well for his scheme, and turning to the Guernsey-man had a little chat with him, during which the stranger mate expressed his detestation of his Captain as a conceited ignoramus, who had brought them all into so unsavory and unprofitable a pickle. Sounding him carefully, Stubb further perceived that the Guernsey-man had not the slightest suspicion concerning the ambergris. He therefore held his peace on that head, but otherwise was quite frank and confidential with him, so that the two quickly concocted a little plan for both circumventing and satirizing the Captain, without his at all dreaming of distrusting their sincerity. According to this little plan of theirs, the Guernsey-man, under cover of an interpreter’s office, was to tell the Captain what he pleased, but as coming from Stubb; and as for Stubb, he was to utter any nonsense that should come uppermost in him during the interview. By this time their destined victim appeared from his cabin. He was a small and dark, but rather delicate looking man for a sea-captain, with large whiskers and moustache, however; and wore a red cotton velvet vest with watch-seals at his side. To this gentleman, Stubb was now politely introduced by the Guernsey-man, who at once ostentatiously put on the aspect of interpreting between them. “What shall I say to him first?” said he. “Why,” said Stubb, eyeing the velvet vest and the watch and seals, “you may as well begin by telling him that he looks a sort of babyish to me, though I don’t pretend to be a judge.” “He says, Monsieur,” said the Guernsey-man, in French, turning to his captain, “that only yesterday his ship spoke a vessel, whose captain and chief-mate, with six sailors, had all died of a fever caught from a blasted whale they had brought alongside.” Upon this the captain started, and eagerly desired to know more. “What now?” said the Guernsey-man to Stubb. “Why, since he takes it so easy, tell him that now I have eyed him carefully, I’m quite certain that he’s no more fit to command a whale-ship than a St. Jago monkey. In fact, tell him from me he’s a baboon.” “He vows and declares, Monsieur, that the other whale, the dried one, is far more deadly than the blasted one; in fine, Monsieur, he conjures us, as we value our lives, to cut loose from these fish.” Instantly the captain ran forward, and in a loud voice commanded his crew to desist from hoisting the cutting-tackles, and at once cast loose the cables and chains confining the whales to the ship. “What now?” said the Guernsey-man, when the Captain had returned to them. “Why, let me see; yes, you may as well tell him now that—that—in fact, tell him I’ve diddled him, and (aside to himself) perhaps somebody else.” “He says, Monsieur, that he’s very happy to have been of any service to us.” Hearing this, the captain vowed that they were the grateful parties (meaning himself and mate) and concluded by inviting Stubb down into his cabin to drink a bottle of Bordeaux. “He wants you to take a glass of wine with him,” said the interpreter. “Thank him heartily; but tell him it’s against my principles to drink with the man I’ve diddled. In fact, tell him I must go.” “He says, Monsieur, that his principles won’t admit of his drinking; but that if Monsieur wants to live another day to drink, then Monsieur had best drop all four boats, and pull the ship away from these whales, for it’s so calm they won’t drift.” By this time Stubb was over the side, and getting into his boat, hailed the Guernsey-man to this effect,—that having a long tow-line in his boat, he would do what he could to help them, by pulling out the lighter whale of the two from the ship’s side. While the Frenchman’s boats, then, were engaged in towing the ship one way, Stubb benevolently towed away at his whale the other way, ostentatiously slacking out a most unusually long tow-line. Presently a breeze sprang up; Stubb feigned to cast off from the whale; hoisting his boats, the Frenchman soon increased his distance, while the Pequod slid in between him and Stubb’s whale. Whereupon Stubb quickly pulled to the floating body, and hailing the Pequod to give notice of his intentions, at once proceeded to reap the fruit of his unrighteous cunning. Seizing his sharp boat-spade, he commenced an excavation in the body, a little behind the side fin. You would almost have thought he was digging a cellar there in the sea; and when at length his spade struck against the gaunt ribs, it was like turning up old Roman tiles and pottery buried in fat English loam. His boat’s crew were all in high excitement, eagerly helping their chief, and looking as anxious as gold-hunters. And all the time numberless fowls were diving, and ducking, and screaming, and yelling, and fighting around them. Stubb was beginning to look disappointed, especially as the horrible nosegay increased, when suddenly from out the very heart of this plague, there stole a faint stream of perfume, which flowed through the tide of bad smells without being absorbed by it, as one river will flow into and then along with another, without at all blending with it for a time. “I have it, I have it,” cried Stubb, with delight, striking something in the subterranean regions, “a purse! a purse!” Dropping his spade, he thrust both hands in, and drew out handfuls of something that looked like ripe Windsor soap, or rich mottled old cheese; very unctuous and savory withal. You might easily dent it with your thumb; it is of a hue between yellow and ash colour. And this, good friends, is ambergris, worth a gold guinea an ounce to any druggist. Some six handfuls were obtained; but more was unavoidably lost in the sea, and still more, perhaps, might have been secured were it not for impatient Ahab’s loud command to Stubb to desist, and come on board, else the ship would bid them good bye. It’s hard to believe that Street Fighter V is celebrating its fifth anniversary this week (February 22nd). recently revealed that the upcoming Season 5 Winter Update for Street Fighter V will bring new fighters and features to the game, including the fan-favorite Dan Hibiki. Capcom Other new features set for the game’s Season 5 update include a new V-Shift mechanic, a free stage, and another new fighter named Eleven. Dan Hibiki is back in the Street Fighter series with his classic movies, such as the fireball Gadoken and the Koryuken uppercut. His new move for Street Fighter V is the “Danretsuken,” which is a multi-hit punching move that sends his opponent flying through the air, and the EX version offers players an option for an even bigger combo. Rose is also back with her Soul Spark, which she can now use in the air. One of her new techniques for her moveset is an anti-air move called the Soul Bind, where she can throw her scarf into the air to bring her opponents back to the ground. Her V-SKill I technique is the Soul Fortune, which enables Rose to use tarot cards that will offer various benefits to her or have negative effects on her enemies. The Soul Satellite returns as Rose’s V-Skill II in the game. Also new for Season 5 is the V-Shift, which will be part of a free in-game update this month. This is part of the V-System and is designed to help players get out of sticky situations. With the cast of one bar of the V-Gauge, players can pull off a fully invincible backdash that will slow down time for a brief period, so players can plan out their next move to counterattack. If timed accurately, the V-shift will allow players to regain half of their used V-Gauge bar. A free bonus character for the winter update is a brand-new character named Eleven. Eleven will be available as a free bonus character for players who purchase a Season 5 pass. Eleven is a prototype for Twelve from Street Fighter III, and he has the ability to shape-shift into other characters. He was created by Gill’s secret organization. If players are still new to Street Fighter V, they can check out a Free Trial version that’s running until February 22. Instead it starts reminding you that your friend’s birthday was last week and you never sent a card, and when did cards get so expensive anyway, and oh yeah, at the last party you went to David did that cool card trick — how did he do that? Sometimes, you just need the brain chatter to STOP so you can get to the calm and quiet needed to enjoy your life. The good news is that you have a secret magic tool to achieve peace which costs less than a dollar. It is wooden and yellow. Has a handy pink eraser. And frequently comes with a №2 stamped on the side. Here are 9 ways a can quickly and easily silence brain chatter: humble pencil Press pause on the pings. Your brain knows when it has committed to a task that remains unfinished. In fact, it will ping you endlessly with reminders. After all, part of the brain’s job is to keep track of things until they get done. Taking the time to let your brain spill those unfinished tasks onto a piece of paper in list format, gives it the confidence that the task will be completed. With relief, it releases the worrisome reminders. Just by having a list, you assure your brain “I’ve got this.” David Allen, author of , frames it as closing open loops. And while Allen has a great system to increase , if you are really overwhelmed with brain chatter, the best place to start is by creating a simple to-do list. Besides, there is a unique kind of high in crossing things off once you’ve done them. Getting Things Done productivity Use loose leaf notebook paper for your brain, like you use tissue for your nose. Sometimes, our brain chatter is so congested that we can’t even get to a list. We need to blow that congestion out. In her book, , Henriette Anne Klauser, shares: “I encourage a form of getting ideas out which I call Rapidwriting. It means to write fast without stopping to consider, to edit, to rearrange, or critique. Use Rapidwriting when you cover the page, ploughing through objections, mowing down the inner voice that criticizes your every word. Write whatever is on your mind. Tell the truth. It’s okay to burn up your Rapidwriting pages ranting and raving.” Write it Down, Make it Happen The important thing about Rapidwriting is that you cannot use a filter. Normally, when we write things down, we pause to think and compose in our head. Skip that step. Go straight from brain to paper. Think of it like Kleenex. You can throw the pages out afterward. If your brain feels like a popcorn popper, mimic that pattern on paper. When our brains are in popcorn-mode, it can be difficult to find the clarity. An action-plan eludes us. Spilling ideas popcorn-style onto paper, then drawing connections between related items is called Mindmapping. This form of planning is especially helpful when your brain is overwhelmed with ideas. Drawing lines between related ideas creates structure — and frequently creates flashes of insight. There are many Mindmapping programs that allow you to do this digitally, but using a pencil and paper can be more effective in silencing the brain — even if the finished product doesn’t look as neat. Find your zen, with Zentangles Zentangle is a method of drawing structured, repetitive patterns in a free-flow from your hand to the page. The drawing bypasses your usual planning functions, so you can enjoy the process without worrying about the result. Sometimes our chatter is a function of not being sure exactly what we want. Our thoughts become loops trying to solve our lives like a problem, rather than filled with the enjoyment of living them. Inspired by an exercise in Henriette Anne Klauser’s, , I began writing letters to my new job at a time when I was at a plateau. I purchased a composition notebook and wrote entries like a diary. “Dear new job, I am so excited that I get to spend so much of every day writing.” And, “Dear new job, I’m so grateful for how many opportunities I get to speak to groups.” Write it Down, Make it Happen The fun part is that writing these letters helped me get very clear on what I wanted — which prompted me to make inspired choices with my time. Funny thing about this process, I didn’t wind up with a new job. What happened was that my current job began to look like what I most wanted it to be. Leverage a schoolroom punishment to convince your brain to run on a more positive track. Did a teacher ever punish you by making you write 100 sentences? It was the worst, right? And chances are, those words were burned into your psyche. You remember exactly what you wrote. Despite the negative connotations most of us have around writing sentences, the practice can be used to create positive, new, chatter-free tracks for our brains to run on. The repetitive, kinesthetic task of writing sentences can be leveraged to help us reprogram our subconscious mind. Choose an affirmation, a goal, a belief you want to reinforce, or a piece of scripture, then pick up that pencil and start writing. You will find that not only does your brain begin to calm down, but that whatever you are writing becomes part of your natural thought patterns. Replaying an awkward interaction? Rewrite the script for a better outcome. Sometimes the chatter in our heads is just us rehashing dialogue. We are either saying what we wish we had said, or revising what we did say, over…and over…and over. The next time that happens, get it out of your head and onto paper. And don’t constrain yourself to what the other person actually said. Rewrite the script in exactly the way you wish it had happened. Your brain will stop the replay because you’ve captured it in print — even if you did take creative license by giving it a Hollywood ending. Want a long-term solution to brain chatter? Proactively drain it before it even starts. One of the best long-term practices to retrain a chatter-filled brain is Julia Cameron’s daily practice of “Morning Pages.” In her book, Cameron writes: “In order to retrieve your creativity, you need to find it. I ask you to do this by an apparently pointless process I call the morning pages…the morning pages are three pages of longhand writing, strictly stream-of-consciousness: ‘Oh, god, another morning. I have NOTHING to say. I need to wash the curtains. Did I get my laundry yesterday? Blah, blah, blah…’ They might also, more ingloriously be called brain drain, since this is one of their main functions.”  Cameron asserts that there is no wrong way to do the morning pages. It’s a simple process of writing–longhand–whatever comes to mind. Cameron says, “although occasionally colorful, the morning pages are often negative, frequently fragmented, often self-pitying, repetitive, stilted or babyish, angry or bland–even silly sounding.” Over time, the practice of morning pages retrains the brain to hang out in its quiet state, because you start to see the chatter for what it is. Just chatter. The Artist’s Way Imagine yourself with a peaceful brain. The worst part of brain chatter is that it makes us tired. It’s like having a roommate who stands right next to us all the time talking in incomplete sentences who never — ever — shuts up. 9 Ways a Humble Pencil Can Silence Brain Chatter

If you’ve been following the crypto long enough you’ve probably heard of one or two smart contract attacks, attacks which have resulted in the theft of cryptoassets worth tens of millions of dollars. The most notable attack remains the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO), one of crypto’s most highly anticipated projects of all time and a poster-child of the revolutionary capabilities of smart contracts. While most have heard of these attacks, few truly understand what went wrong, how it went wrong, and how to avoid making the same mistake twice. Smart contracts are dynamic, complex, and incredibly powerful. While their potential is unimaginable, its unlikely they’ll become attack-proof overnight. That said, it’s imperative for the future of crypto that we all learn from prior mistakes and grow together. Although the DAO is a thing of the past, it remains a great example of susceptible smart contract attacks that developers, investors, and community members should familiarize themselves with. Check Out My Tutorial Attack #1: Reentrancy A reentrancy attack occurs when the attacker drains funds from the target by recursively calling the target’s withdraw function_,_ as was the case with the DAO. When the contract fails to update its state (a user’s balance) prior to sending funds, the attacker can continuously call the withdraw function to drain the contract’s funds. Anytime the attacker receives Ether, the attacker’s contract automatically calls its fallback function, , which is written to call the withdraw function yet again. At this point the attack has entered a recursive loop and the contract’s funds start to siphon off to the attacker. Because the target contract gets stuck calling the attacker’s fallback function, the contract is never able to update the attacker’s balance. The target contract is tricked into thinking nothing is wrong... To be clear, function () a fallback functions is a contract’s function that is automatically executed whenever the contract receives Ether and zero data. The Attack The attacker donates ether to the target contract The target contract updates the attacker’s balance for the donated Ether The attacker requests the funds back Funds are sent back The attacker’s fallback function is triggered and calls for a subsequent withdrawal The smart contract’s logic to update the attacker’s balance has yet to be executed, thus the withdraw is successfully called again Funds are sent to the attacker Steps 5–7 repeat Once the attack is over, the attacker sends funds from their contract to their personal address The recursive loop of a reentrancy attack Unfortunately there is no way to stop the attack once it has started. The first being when a contract’s state is updated AFTER funds have been sent and not BEFORE. By failing to update the contract state prior to sending funds, the function can be interrupted mid-computation and the contract will be tricked into thinking the funds haven’t actually been sent yet. The second vulnerability is when the contract incorrectly uses to send funds, as opposed to or . A is an unsigned integer of 256 bits (unsigned, as in only positive integers). The Ethereum Virtual Machine was designed to use 256 bits as its word size, or the number of bits processed by a computer’s CPU in one go. Because EVM is limited to 256 bits in size, the assigned number range is 0 to 4,294,967,295 (2²⁵⁶). If we go over this range, the figure is reset to the bottom of the range (2²⁵⁶ + 1 = 0). If we go under this range, the figure is reset to the top end of the range (0–1= 2²⁵⁶). uint256 uint256 Underflow takes place when we subtract a number greater than zero from zero, resulting in a newly assigned integer of 2²⁵⁶. Now, if an attacker’s balance experiences underflow, the balance would be updated such that all funds could be stolen. We can add a parameter check in our code to act as a last line of defense. Attack #3: Cross-Function Race Condition Last but not least, the Cross-Function Race Condition Attack. As discussed in in our Reentrancy attack, the DAO contract failed to correctly update the contract state and allowed for funds to be stolen. Part of the issue with the DAO and external calls in general is the potential for a Cross-Function Race Condition to occur. While all transactions in Ethereum run serially (one after another), external calls (a call to another contract or address) can become a recipe for disaster if not properly managed. In a perfect world, they’re avoided entirely. A cross-function race condition occurs when two functions are called and share the same state. The contract is tricked into thinking that two contract states exist, when in reality there is only one contract state that can exists. We can’t have X = 3 and X = 4 at the same time… true Let’s clarify this concept with an example. The Attack & The Code **contract crossFunctionRace{ mapping (address => uint) private userBalances;**

Likewise, the reward function also uses the withdraw function for sending the one-time reward and is thus untrusted as well. Just as important, the contract executes all internal work first. Like our reentrancy attack example, grants the user credit for his/her one time reward before allowing for withdraw to prevent a cross-function race condition from occurring. function untrustedGetReward() In a perfect world, smart contracts do not need to rely on making external calls. The reality is that external calls in many cases are next to impossible to work around. For that reason, using a mutex to “lock” some state and granting only the owner the ability to change the state can help avoid a costly disaster. Although mutexes are incredibly effective, they can get tricky when used for multiple contracts. If you use mutexes to protect against race conditions, you will need to carefully ensure that there are no other ways for a lock to be claimed and never released. If going the mutex way, make sure you’ve thoroughly understand the potential dangers when writing contracts with them (deadlocks, livelocks, etc.). **contract mutexExample{ mapping (address => uint) private balances;

Although blockchain and smart contract technology continues to evolve day by day, the stakes remain high. Attackers have not let up on looking for the right opportunity to pounce on poorly designed contracts and run away with the goods. Smart Contract Attacks [Part 1] - 3 Attacks We Should All Learn From The DAO
