Blockchains, by default, are isolated from each other. Sergey Gorbunov Apr 5, 2022, 12:34 PM Drone Warfare The simplest way to think about it is of a distributed database and compute environment with strong security properties. Anyone can read and write transactions or data to it. A decentralized set of node operators executes the transactions and ensures they cannot be erased or repeated [i.e. when you send funds to a merchant, you want to make sure the funds are sent only once]. The "blockchain protocol" ensures these properties. It also can tolerate malicious nodes [up to a certain threshold] and cannot be simply turned off as anyone can participate in the consensus and continue performing the verification functions. So it's a reliable compute and storage environment that can be used to exchange and compute information jointly. We're collaborating with a few and plan to expand our collaborations. Staking is based on standard rules in PoS systems. Users can stake their tokens with validators who participate in the consensus. The users earn the corresponding rewards for helping to secure the network [minus the commission fees taken by the validators]. Keplr, Cosmostation, and Ledger are already supported. We might develop a wallet, but for now, we're working with a lot of already amazing wallets to integrate. Axelar token will be cross-chain from day 1. Meaning you can move it around and participate in different DeFi or staking opportunities across many blockchains. So whether the distribution happens in erc-20 or native format, will not affect what you can do with the token. erc-20s have wider usability in the early days of the network as they're easier to integrate with dapps. But our goal is to have the native support as wide as possible, it just takes a bit longer in practice. The liberation? Autonomy. The purest and most radical following and implementation of this principle in the history of mankind is arguably the . From the mining of the first 50 , to the EVM, to Parachains and Danksharding, every step in this space of maximum decentralization is underlined by the moral imperative that increasing the autonomy of individuals is desirable. Web3 space BTC However, as important as it is to achieve autonomy from all claims to power, the question remains about what we should do with this Autonomy. In our desire to create a better world, is autonomy the value we should try to maximize? If the only aim of spelling out freedom is to create as much space as possible for undisturbed self-expression, then this freedom is threatened to remain empty, dead, and meaningless. Although, as the absence of obstacles and undesired influences, a purely negative conception of freedom is not enough to give our lives meaning and orientation. Therefore, autonomy must not be misunderstood as an end in itself. Instead, we must understand it as the foundation and enabling condition for resonant world relations. I would like to argue that the pure value of autonomy requires a supplement to unfold its utopian potential: social freedom. Autonomy Uncontested The value of autonomy enjoys an almost unchallenged status in our society. In all political spectrums ("My body, my choice" / "Taxes are theft" / "Better dead than red"), in culture (glorification of world traveling influencers, the explosion of interest into self-improvement, the rise of non-traditional relationships, etc. ), art (tropes about oppression/emancipation), everywhere the unquestioned virtue of autonomy shines through. This development has reached its climax in the decentralized space. Here, autonomy is not just one value among many but the central ethical guiding principle from which everything else is derived. The vision of a world where individuals can interact directly with each other without intermediaries or higher authorities is the utopian core of the web3 landscape. Indeed, the decentralized space has an emancipatory potential that can not be underestimated. Many of our institutions are, in the best case, unsuitable for the problems of the 21st century and, in the worst case, rotten to the core. By creating structures that enable individuals to govern their data, finances, identities, and contracts themselves, decentralized technologies have the potential to shift power away from gatekeepers to society. But what is autonomy? Autonomy, negative and social freedom The term autonomy is derived from the ancient Greek "autonomía," which means something like "self-legislation" or "self-determination." Autonomy is often understood as the ability to emancipate oneself from external influences and constraints. Proudhons quote and my examples reference that understanding of autonomy. This notion of autonomy thus shows a great affinity to the concept of negative liberty, as prominently defined by Isaiah Berlin and is famously represented by Thomas Hobbes's quote "A free man is he that in those things which by his strength and wit he is able to do is not hindered to do what he hath the will to do" Negative liberty denotes a state of absence of external obstacles and limitations. It realizes itself in a protected space of individual decision and action freedom to be exposed to as few interventions as possible. It is precisely this ideal that many advocates of decentralized systems also invoke: The substitution of hierarchical structures by autonomous actors is supposed to enable more negative freedom by removing boundaries and obstacles. The gold standard of a decentralized system is its robustness to censorship and, therefore its ability to maintain boundaries and degree of freedom against external forces. However, is the protection and expansion of negative freedom sufficient to enable people to lead a truly self-determined and fulfilled life? The philosopher Axel Honneth has convincingly argued that this is not the case. For him, individual freedom only becomes possible where it can relate to an "objective reality", i.e. to given social conditions and institutions. True self-determination, therefore, always presupposes a social context in which the individual can realize his or her life plans. Honneth calls the form of freedom that arises from this "social freedom", which he derived from Hegel. According to Honneth, it is not enough for a free individual to be devoid of obstacles. Instead, it necessitates a state in which individuals support each other in realizing their respective goals, enabling each other to lead a self-determined life. That is all quite abstract, so Let's visualize the difference between the two concepts of freedom in the following picture: Imagine you are in front of a river that you want to cross. The river looks quite dangerous; you could be swept across or drown in a whirlpool. Hobbes is sitting next to you on a stone and tells you that you have every freedom to cross this river. After all, there are no dangerous animals in the water. (There are also no border guards with machine guns, and no wall has been erected). However, you are completely on your own. It's just your subjective experience, and you can't hope to make it, should you try. However, it could also be that a tree has accidentally fallen, and you can get across quite easily. For Hobbes, though, it makes no difference to your freedom whether you live in a world in which this tree has fallen or not. At that moment, Hegel arrives with a good wine in his hand and a wheelbarrow full of planks and nails. He offers to build a bridge together because he wants to cross it himself. For Hegel, only now have you gained your freedom, because in reality, the conditions have been created through which you can hope to actually cross the river. Before, it was pure chance whether this hope could be rationally justified. It was only through Hegel that you actively received the support from your environment that can give you rational hope of reaching your goal (the other shore). This applies to societies. It is, as supporters of Hegel's idea would argue in societies without social freedom pure chance whether you grow up in circumstances that enable you to achieve your goals and in which everyone can hope to achieve their goals. In societies with social freedom, however, this hope is justified because the objectives of the other subjects are such that they enable and complement the achievement of one's own goals and complement them. Social freedom thus has a cooperative core: it is based on the insight that the freedom of the individual is dependent on the freedom of others. Only in a community in which people grant and support each other in the development of self-determination can the individual also experience himself as genuinely free. The values of the decentralized space have to be ultimately also committed to such an understanding of social freedom, even if this is not always explicitly reflected. Behind the efforts to create decentralized, self-organized structures has to be the vision of a world in which individuals can freely associate to collectively shape their living conditions with each other for the better. Even the much-cited "trustless trust" and allegedly increase of freedom that blockchain technologies are supposed to enable is ultimately grounded in the individual’s faculty to understand the system. It makes a huge difference if 99,9999& of crypto projects are scams, or if it’s only 80, 70, or 60. However, the fixation on code-based incentive and coordination mechanisms threatens to lose sight of this fact. You could easily imagine a future in which every aspect of societal organization is managed by smart contracts, but in which more people are scammed; more people lack connections and meaning and fewer people can make sense of this world. Conclusion The vision of autonomy that inspires so many in the blockchain space is a noble and important one. Establishing robust individual freedoms and consent is crucial to human flourishing. But to unlock the full transformative potential of decentralized technologies, we must pair the pursuit of autonomy with the cultivation of social freedom. This means aspiring not just for freedom from interference but also to enable the creation of resonance - meaningful, mutually empowering relationships - at both the individual and the institutional level. It means recognizing that our identities are not atomic, but fundamentally intersubjective - our agency is enhanced, not undermined, by positive embeddedness in the social fabric. And it means harnessing the power of decentralized coordination not just to maximize individual gain, but to create emergent realities that are greater than the sum of their parts. By synthesizing the principles of individual sovereignty and collective intelligence, the marriage of autonomy and resonance paves the way for a future that brings out the best in both individuals and the whole. A future where people are free to author their own lives, while also synergizing with others to make the pie massively bigger for everyone. Getting there won't be easy, requiring technical and cultural innovation. But if we can pull it off, the prize is immense - nothing short of the difference between a failed species and a thriving galactic civilization. So let us not settle for autonomy alone but strive for resonant autonomy—the foundation for a world alive with connection, meaning, and potentially infinite upside. We have the rare privilege of living at a time when our actions can shape the entire trajectory of the future. The blockchain renaissance has already expanded our sense of what's possible. INTRODUCTION The artificial intelligence (AI) tool known as ChatGPT is many things: a revolutionary technology with the potential to augment human capabilities, fostering our own productivity and efficiency;[1] an accelerator for scientific and medical breakthroughs;[2] a mechanism for making existing technologies accessible to more people;[3] an aid to help the visually impaired navigate the world;[4] a creative tool that can write sonnets, limericks, and haikus;[5] and a computational engine that reasonable estimates posit may add trillions of dollars of growth across the global economy.[6] Contrary to the allegations in the Complaint, however, ChatGPT is not in any way a substitute for a subscription to The New York Times. In the real world, people do not use ChatGPT or any other OpenAI product for that purpose. Nor could they. In the ordinary course, one cannot use ChatGPT to serve up Times articles at will. The Times has sought to paint a different picture. Its lawsuit alleges that OpenAI has imperiled the very enterprise of journalism, illustrating the point with 100 examples in which some version of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model supposedly generated several paragraphs of Times content as outputs in response to user prompts. See Dkt. 1-68 (Exhibit J). The allegations in the Times’s Complaint do not meet its famously rigorous journalistic standards.[7] The truth, which will come out in the course of this case, is that the Times paid someone to hack OpenAI’s products. It took them tens of thousands of attempts to generate the highly anomalous results that make up Exhibit J to the Complaint. They were able to do so only by targeting and exploiting a bug (which OpenAI has committed to addressing) by using deceptive prompts that blatantly violate OpenAI’s terms of use.[8] And even then, they had to feed the tool portions of the very articles they sought to elicit verbatim passages of, virtually all of which already appear on multiple public websites. Normal people do not use OpenAI’s products in this way.[9] Journalism has undergone many changes in the digital age, and may well undergo more with the advent of AI. OpenAI has established important partnerships with many leaders in the news industry—from large enterprises like the Associated Press and Axel Springer to the dozens of smaller and local outlets associated with the American Journalism Project—to creatively explore and implement AI solutions that assist investigative reporting, create enhanced reader experiences, and improve business operations. The Times’s suggestion that the contrived attacks of its hired gun show that the Fourth Estate is somehow imperiled by this technology is pure fiction. So too is its implication that the public en masse might mimic its agent’s aberrant activity. There is a genuinely important issue at the heart of this lawsuit—critical not just to OpenAI, but also to countless start-ups and other companies innovating in this space—that is being litigated both here and in over a dozen other cases around the country (including in this Court): whether it is fair use under copyright law to use publicly accessible content to train generative AI models to learn about language, grammar, and syntax, and to understand the facts that constitute humans’ collective knowledge. OpenAI and the other defendants in these lawsuits will ultimately prevail because no one—not even the New York Times—gets to monopolize facts[10] or the rules of language.[11] For good reason, there is a long history of precedent holding that it is perfectly lawful to use copyrighted content as part of a technological process that (as here) results in the creation of new, different, and innovative products.[12] Established copyright doctrine will dictate that the Times cannot prevent AI models from acquiring knowledge about facts, any more than another news organization can prevent the Times itself from re-reporting stories it had no role in investigating.[13] As Justice Brandeis explained more than 100 years ago: “The general rule of law is, that the noblest of human productions—knowledge, truths ascertained, conceptions, and ideas—become, after voluntary communication to others, free as the air to common use.”[14] All of that said, even assuming (counterfactually) the truth of what the lawsuit alleges, several of the theories in the Complaint are not viable, even as pleaded. This Motion asks the Court to trim those at the outset to focus the litigation on the core issues that really matter. In short: The direct copyright infringement claim asserts liability in part from conduct that is timebarred because it occurred more than three years ago. The contributory infringement claim would ascribe liability to OpenAI based on generalized knowledge of third-party infringement, rather than actual knowledge of specific infringements, which the law requires. The claim for violations of 17 U.S.C. § 1202 (the “DMCA”) fails for the reasons embraced by every other court to consider indistinguishable claims against generative AI models: the DMCA simply does not address the conduct to which the Times seeks to ascribe liability. And the claim for state common law misappropriation is preempted by the federal Copyright Act. The decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem continues to expand across multiple blockchains, offering new opportunities but also introducing major challenges. One key issue is that of fragmented liquidity - assets and trading activity spread thinly across disconnected platforms. Another threat comes from weaknesses in cross-chain interoperability - bridges that promise to connect blockchains but with security flaws that leave funds at risk. To discuss these problems and potential solutions, I spoke with Boris Povar, a co-founder, and CEO of the project. Eywa Povar brings a strong technical background to tackle these complex topics. With a degree in mathematics and programming, he has worked in crypto since 2017 after a successful career running an IT outsourcing firm. As a portfolio investor and fund manager in the DeFi space, he has direct experience grappling with risks around fragmented capital and insecure bridges. Since 2020, he has focused his efforts on developing a novel architecture for trusted and efficient cross-chain communication. Povar provides insight into the scale and consequences of fragmented liquidity and flaws in today's bridges. The interview sheds light on the roadblocks hindering DeFi's progress as well as innovative solutions in development. Povar lends both technical expertise and real-world perspective to outline a vision for the next stage in DeFi evolution. What are the problems of fragmented liquidity and insecure cross-chain communication? The problem of fragmented liquidity can be formulated as follows: Liquidity located in one blockchain is isolated and not utilized in other blockchains simultaneously. Protocols addressing this issue enable your funds to operate across multiple blockchains/protocols concurrently. For instance, Liquid Staking protocols enable participation in the Ether consensus, earning income, while still utilizing funds in DeFi. Blast operates on a similar principle, where funds in their blockchain function within major DeFi protocols in Ethereum, generating income. However, examining this problem from the perspective of bridges reveals inefficiencies. Traditional lock-mint-burn-unlock bridges are ineffective with liquidity, as they connect assets and blockchains in pairs, requiring liquidity to be added to each link. Liquidity locked in such bridges remains dormant and is utilized ineffectively; L2 bridges serve as examples. Meanwhile, the TVL of bridges is rapidly growing and has reached the total TVL of DEXes (approximately $17 billion), necessitating more efficient utilization. Thus, it can be argued that bridges exacerbate the problem of liquidity fragmentation. The issue of insecure cross-chain communication is exemplified by the Multichain protocol. Projects like Curve and Fantom relied on it for cross-chain communications and liquidity transfer. However, Multichain malfunctioned at one point, resulting in losses for these projects. Their infrastructure was entirely dependent on Multichain, and finding and integrating alternative options took considerable time. Multichain, like many cross-chain protocols, had centralized elements, making its operation heavily reliant on teams. This scenario underscores the risks associated with relying on any single bridge as critical ecosystem infrastructure, which may lead to unforeseen "black swan" events. How big of an issue are these problems currently in DeFi and crypto overall? What are the consequences? High slippages in cross-chain swaps and complex UI/UX pose challenges for the majority of users. Projects are compelled to divide their liquidity across blockchains, incurring high maintenance costs. Furthermore, most bridges exhibit centralized traits. To date, bridge hacks have resulted in losses exceeding $2 billion. At EYWA, we endeavor to consolidate the liquidity of major blockchains, enhancing efficiency without compromising security and decentralization. What initially motivated you to tackle the problems of fragmented liquidity and insecure cross-chain bridges in the crypto industry? I've been actively addressing my own challenges. With involvement in asset management and DeFi capital placement since 2020, and in the industry since 2017, I possess an in-depth understanding of the problems and risks associated with cross-chain fund transfers. Drawing on my technical background, I've meticulously analyzed bridge hacks, resulting in the loss of over $2 billion. Consequently, I grasp what's necessary to ensure the security of cross-chain communications. Moreover, I recognize the imperative of holding liquidity long-term for bridge efficiency. I'm well aware of the inefficiencies in DeFi liquidity utilization, contributing to the dominance of CEXes over DEXes. The first wave of cross-chain bridges, while experimental, merely offered a pricier service without enhancing security or decentralization. I often phrase it as: "It’s still the same CEX, just in a new package." Hence, since late 2020, I've been dedicated to developing a genuinely decentralized cross-chain protocol capable of rivaling CEXes without compromising decentralization and security for development speed and convenience. How exactly does aggregated bridge and consensus architecture provide security for transfers? Most cross-chain bridges currently employ their own messaging protocols, which often fall short in terms of decentralization and entail various risks associated with teams, regulations, and management. It's fair to say that virtually all bridges on the market require trust, leaving the entire ecosystem vulnerable to potential "black swan" events. In response to these challenges, the Eywa team, in collaboration with the Curve team, is developing a trustless bridge that relies on a consensus of the most reliable messaging protocols available. We leverage Axelar, L0, Wormhole, Chainlink CCIP, and other messaging protocols to create a highly secure solution for messaging, custody, and liquidity transfer. By combining Eywa Token Bridge smart contracts with data validation consensus, we establish an Eywa Consensus Bridge that ensures security independently of any team and enables users to retain control over bridge liquidity. When transmitting information, it will be sent in parallel to several messaging protocols based on the user's choice, allowing users to specify preferred bridges and required quorums. The bridge's smart contract in the destination network aggregates transmission results and compares them until a quorum is reached. Users can customize the level of security needed, determining the number of checks. If any protocol returns incorrect data, the transmission will be halted. Imagine initiating a cross-chain transfer of a substantial sum. Initially, your funds are secured in the bridge's smart contract. Subsequently, a cross-chain transaction is initiated, transmitted, and verified concurrently by multiple data transfer protocols. In the destination network, a specialized smart contract receives and compares responses. If consistent information is received from all protocols, the final transaction executes your transfer. However, if any bridge is compromised, resulting in mismatched data, the transaction will be aborted, allowing you to reclaim your funds in the source network. The probability of all transfer protocols being compromised simultaneously approaches zero. How does utilizing Curve’s existing deep liquidity pools enable low-slippage cross-chain trading on CrossCurve? The more liquidity available, the lower the slippages, which is an evident concept. However, to elucidate how utilizes Curve pools, I must delve into its architecture. As mentioned earlier, the issue with bridge liquidity fragmentation lies in the fact that locked liquidity within bridges remains inactive in DeFi. CrossCurve To address this, we utilize Curve's LP tokens as the foundational liquidity. Leveraging Curve's ability to exchange LP tokens within the pool as standard tokens, we generate s-tokens - synthetic collateralized derivatives - by consolidating them on one public blockchain, known as Hubchain (currently Fantom). Subsequently, we establish stable liquidity pools on Curve by connecting s-tokens of similar nature. These pools offer minimal slippage. A typical exchange transaction traverses three blockchains, involving an imbalance operation to add liquidity to the Curve pool in the source network, followed by minting the corresponding s-token to the Hubchain, where it is exchanged for an s-token backed by the Curve LP token from the destination network. The s-token is then burned, releasing the LP token in the destination network, and the final step involves an imbalance withdrawal of liquidity from the Curve pool, transferring it to the user's wallet - adding liquidity, exchanging, and removing liquidity. The greater the liquidity in the pools we utilize, the lower the losses incurred. Additionally, this architecture enables more efficient capital utilization as the liquidity from all blockchains is consolidated in one location simultaneously, rather than in pairs. Consequently, CrossCurve requires substantially less liquidity compared to its competitors to achieve low slippage. What are the main benefits to projects and developers of listing their tokens on CrossCurve? Web3 projects can list their tokens on any chain against crvUSD/Stables/WBTC/WETH/Curve LPs and trade them simultaneously across all chains for any asset. They can also receive yield provided by Eywa, Curve, and Convex on provided liquidity, attracting new users from different blockchains. Fast scaling for the utility of your token in other networks, while also reducing the costs associated with maintaining cross-chain liquidity by keeping a single pool. How does CrossCurve simplify the user experience for cross-chain DeFi operations? We utilize cross-chain ZAP transactions, condensing a large number of transactions for the user. For instance, a typical exchange involves a series of transactions across three blockchains, yet the user only needs to initiate one transaction. How will the CrossCurve yield flywheel attract liquidity providers and projects to the platform? Since all CrossCurve pools are native Curve pools, we have access to various tools for managing incentives. These include direct incentives, veCRV bribes, Convex rewards, and other vote aggregators like StakeDAO, Lobby, and Yearn. Additionally, we can create our own votemarket, accumulate Curve and Convex votes, and participate in CRV Wars. Our plan involves using bonding mechanisms to attract the protocol’s own liquidity to the main pools. The first phase of our flywheel launch will focus on direct incentives for pools, veCRV bribes, and attracting our own liquidity through bonding. Subsequently, we will introduce a DAO and our own vote market. The issuance of the EYWA token will be exclusively available to long-term holders and members of the CrossCurve DAO, thereby strengthening the token's value. Where do you see the main competition in cross-chain DEX space, and how is CrossCurve positioned against them? My primary competitors include projects such as Stargate, Squid, Synapse, and Hashflow. We position ourselves as a solution primarily catering to liquidity providers and DeFi power users who necessitate seamless movement of substantial liquidity across blockchains. Do you intend to partner up with other major players, DAOs and bridges? If yes, in what capacity? To construct the Consensus Bridge, we are collaborating with Curve and will engage with prominent players in the cross-chain market — L0, Wormhole, Axelar, and Chainlink — as integrators of their solutions. For liquidity building, we have partnered with Curve and other entities within the Curve ecosystem, including Convex, StakeDAO, Yearn, and Lobby, to incentivize their users. We are also collaborating with yield aggregators like Beefy. We are currently in negotiations to integrate all new blockchains that Curve will support. Among those on the list are Mantle, Linea, Scroll, zksync, BNB Chain, and others. Additionally, we plan to identify a new Hubchain, a strategic partner blockchain. We are all speculators. Every instant we exist in this universe is filled with uncertainty. In our attempt to wade through an unpredictable existence, our brain constantly constructs a probabilistic map of our environment. Our actions are based not on facts but on perceived probabilities across various outcomes. A simple example that applies to my existence is the risk of triggering an avalanche while skiing. The most enjoyable powder runs in the backcountry are located on pitches 35° to 40°. This is also the perfect gradient for an avalanche. Before dropping in, my guide assesses the probability of an avalanche, given the observed snow and weather conditions. My guide also relies on recent observations of other guides who have skied in the same area. If the risk is too high, we don’t ski. A more quotidian example is whether to take the elevator or the stairs. The former is faster than the latter. However, elevators are mechanical devices that sometimes fail, and failure could lead to severe injury or death. You assess the expected value (probability * outcome), whether you are conscious of it or not, of the time and effort saved by taking the elevator up 30 floors, given your belief about the chance of injury or death, vs. walking up stairs which is a less risky mode of travel but takes far longer and is more tiring. You are gambling with your life every second of every day. It’s not a bad thing; it just is the essence of humanity’s inability to perfectly forecast the future. And what an awful existence that would be if we knew precisely how the future would play out. I prefer our imperfection. The story you tell yourself about certain actions informs your perception of their risk. I will call this the narrative. For social beings like humans, the narrative is primarily created through the “wisdom” of the crowd. For better or worse, the most powerful stories are the ones in which everyone believes. The narrative is also created by objective facts. The facts, in most cases, are discrete events that point to the riskiness of certain behaviors. It is a fact that avalanches are more prevalent on a 40° pitch. It is a fact that people have been injured or killed while riding an elevator. Common chatter and objective facts combine to create the narrative. While facts are great, it is challenging as an individual human to know the exact number of fatalities on an elevator over the total number of rides ever taken. It is also challenging to know the number of skiers who died in avalanches on a 40° pitch over the total number of runs taken on a similar slope. In the absence of our ability to ascertain the exact actuarial data, we rely on others. It goes something like this. Avalanches: I know avalanches in this type of aspect are more prevalent. But my guide, who has extensive experience and training on how to determine which slopes are avalanche-prone, believes this particular line is safe. Safe doesn’t mean there won’t be an avalanche; safe implies the probability of an avalanche is low enough to be acceptable. Therefore, due to my trust in his training system, which evolved from the experience of thousands of mountaineering guides over time, I will follow him down this slope. Elevators: I know that riding the elevator is more dangerous than taking the stairs. But everyone else is taking the elevator. If everyone else is taking the elevator, then it must be safe. Everyone can’t be wrong all at the same time. Additionally, there are building codes that were created using the experience of trained engineers, and this elevator is certified as safe. Therefore, trusting the expertise of engineers I will never meet and the crowd's wisdom, I feel safe riding the elevator. The way we assign probabilities doesn’t hinge on the facts or the technology but on our perception of the facts and how good the technology is. These perceptions are based on what other humans, who we assume know more than us due to their training and experience, say are the facts or say is good technology. Crypto: To tie this into crypto, consider the following. Suppose a new project claims to solve a problem using novel technology. The problem they claim to solve is well-known, and the tokens of other projects attempting to solve this problem are highly valued. You believe the project’s engineers are smart and talented enough to solve this problem. You believe this because other engineers who have launched successful crypto projects are advising them. You are also confident in the team because they have graduated from well-regarded tech-focused universities and have prior work experience at successful tech companies. Because the narrative is strong (story + tech), you invest. But digging deeper into your thought process, what is more important: the story or the tech? The Story. The story is more important than the tech. Your perceived probability of success is based on what other people say about the problem and what other people say about the team's technical competence. In very few cases do you have the ability to evaluate the tech at a fundamental level solely. That’s why you trust others you believe are better informed than yourself to signal whether the tech is highly likely to solve the problem. While your tech skills are usually inadequate to properly evaluate the project, you can easily understand whether a story is good or not. A good story is one that more and more people tell each other. Of course it’s great if the story is spoken about in a positive manner. For example, “All retail traders are going to switch from CEXs to DEXs in this cycle.” But even if the story is spoken about negatively: “There is no way that retail traders are going to leave CEXs for DEXs.”, the story of the migration of trading volume from CEX to DEX is still being spread. I don’t care if people believe the story; I just want them to tell a positive or negative variant of it. Because you make more money being long than short, optimism will win over pessimism during the cycle. It’s just how the human brain is wired. What Is My Job? While my official title is Chief Investment Officer at Maelstrom, I should alter it to Chief Story Officer. I tell stories. The better and more concise the story, the faster it will spread. The greater the story's virality, the more tokens adjacent to that story will appreciate in value. The tech does not matter! The financial professionals at Maelstrom all graduated with finance degrees from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. I didn’t plan it that way; it just happened. While we understand the potential applications of cryptographic and blockchain technology, we are not cryptographers, distributed network specialists, or have deep technical computer science knowledge. When we do deals, we outsource tech due diligence to others with those skills. The others might be the lead VC  firm or qualified angels in a pre-sale token round. Some might be the project’s highly respected technical advisors. In the absence of these types of validators, we might get comfortable with the tech because the founders have launched successful projects, and by successful, I mean applications that were used by many crypto projects in the past. Our job is to ascertain which project has the best probability of success given the story vertical. Success depends on a macro and micro-story spreading wide and far. You make the most money on a token attached to a story to go from being perceived as “never” to “maybe” happening. I would rather invest in a token with a perceived probability of success of 0.01% that has a story in the growth phase of virality than a token with a perceived probability of success of 50% but has a story that has reached the common knowledge phase. If the probability of success rises from 0.01% to just 1% because the story quickly infects the minds of many, I 100x my money. But the only way to 100x my money with a token that has a perceived probability of success at 50% is that the actual results, in whatever format is relevant to that project, are so amazing that growth comes from observed results rather than a rising perception of future success. The macro story speaks to an observed trend and how this project will capitalize on it. It’s a story more than a trend because we are taking a small movement and extrapolating its impact much further into an uncertain future. Macro Story: “Retail derivatives trading volume is shifting from CEXs to DEXs.” BitPerp is building a perpetual (perp) swap DEX. BitPerp’s token will pump because its macro story is currently not well known but has the viral potential to infect many minds. The micro story speaks to why this particular project will be the best in class out of all those competing within a particular macro story. Micro Story: “BitPerp is advised by Arthur Hayes, who helped invent the perpetual swap.” When others hear that Arthur is involved, they assume the project will get some kick-ass advice to help them best all other competing projects. This blog is usually about macro stories. Most of the time, I’m telling stories about thieving central bankers and politicians who are destroying the value of time and human labor by printing fiat money. I’m telling the story of how Bitcoin and the crypto ecosystem are an antidote to this organized theft of human dignity. But given I run a trading book, I also tell micro-stories about trends within crypto and how my chosen coins and tokens will rise in price as more people believe and hear about the story in question. I don’t write in-depth micro-stories that often about specific tokens outside of Bitcoin and Ethereum. But, it’s bull market time bitches. I laid the foundation of the significant forces that will drive crypto usage and adoption; it’s time to shill my bags. Results Do results, and by that, I mean growth in trading volume, total value locked, number of unique wallets, etc., even matter? Yes, they matter, but their importance to the price of a token differs depending on what part of the hype life cycle in which you are investing. When investing in a story/trend you believe will go from “never” to “maybe” happening, the importance of a project’s traction is low. The market doesn’t expect much because the market believes this token is attached to a trend that is unlikely to grow in the future. Therefore, even mediocre results are trumped as groundbreaking because the expectations are so low. When investing in a story/trend you believe will go from “maybe” to “definitely” happening, the importance of a project’s traction is high. The market’s expectations are high because they believe in a bright future. What would be considered mind-blowing results in the previous phase are considered mediocre in this phase. Amazing results are not enough; in this phase, a project must be genuinely revolutionary in order to meet expectations. Shitcoin Story Time The point of this essay and thought exercise is to provide readers with a view into the conceptual framework that guides Maelstrom. Over the coming months, most of the essays I write will focus on specific tokens we hold and their macro and micro-stories. These tokens have launched or have upcoming public launches, and thus, I’m trying to spread the story wide and far. I do not care if you buy or sell any tokens spoken about. I care that I present such a provocative story and supporting arguments that you discuss it in a positive or negative manner with others. I know I have succeeded when I read the following on social media:\ “Did you read Arthur’s latest essay? Man, that guy is a fucking dumbass. There is no way that Pendle will be the biggest derivatives trading platform in crypto, surpassing Binance. I don’t even know what an interest rate swap is, nor do any other degens in crypto.” Or “Did you read Arthur’s latest essay? Fuck me, none of us own enough of Ethena. Tether is going down, and Ethena is definitely going to be the top USD-pegged stablecoin.” Below is a rough idea of the macro and micro-stories I intend to tell over the coming months. Retail derivatives trading volume will shift from CEXs to DEXs. Projects in question: dYdX, GMX, and possibly another challenger The launch of ETH staking will spark a surge in interest rate swap trading volumes across DeFi Project in question: Pendle There is a way to use tens of billions of dollars worth of low market cap shitcoins to power DEX quanto derivatives trading volumes. Project in question: Krav DEX on-chain liquidity will be provided by middleware that disintermediates the current crop of market making firms. Project in question: Elixir As DEXs become the primary venue for price discovery, on-chain oracles that provide prices for settlement and liquidation will surge in importance. Project in question: Flare Why Tether and any stablecoin uses a TradFi bank for custody of fiat will face pressure and we can create fiat pegged stablecoins without relying on TradFi. Project in question: Ethena How to solve cross-chain bridging of assets without building a bridge. Project in question: Axelar Harvest Right now, the energy and attention is on the astonishing amount of Bitcoin the US-listed spot ETFs are accumulating. This, along with a global fiat debasement orgy, will drive Bitcoin to unfathomable heights in fiat currency terms. And the upcoming US-listed Ether ETF will drive Ether prices higher as well. I’ve got my Bitcoin and Ether. I might buy a bit more, but by and large my focus is shifting to shitcoins. Are there tokens that I can purchase that will outperform Bitcoin and, secondarily, Ether? This is Maelstrom’s hurdle rate. We accomplish this by becoming as knowledgeable as possible about certain projects and telling amazing stories.

Crypto bros, rejoice! 2024 might as well be renamed the year of the crypto now that the US Securities and Exchange Commission has opened the floodgates into crypto investment with the approval of a spot bitcoin exchange traded fund, causing the world's most popular cryptocurrency to hit the highest it has ever been since April 2022. Well, it looks like and are getting into trouble for profiteering off of other peoples' work by building AI products using content available on the internet. The big one, in case you missed it, was this the New York Times filed against Microsoft and OpenAI for allegedly copying and using millions of its works to build generative artificial intelligence tools that rely on so-called large-language models. The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement on Wednesday. The move by one of the most prominent newspapers is the latest in several cases against Generative AI companies for training their models on the data acquired without the owner's permission. Training an AI model is a difficult and complex process. Read this to learn more about it. AI article The New York Times to be the "first major American media organization to sue the companies over copyright issues associated with its written works." claimed The lawsuit, filed by the New York Times in Federal District Court in Manhattan, contends that millions of articles published by The New York Times were used to train automated chatbots that now compete with the news outlet as a source of reliable information. The lawsuit filed by the New York Times does not include any amount written in it, as the newspaper claimed. It also added that the defendants - OpenAI and Microsoft - should be held responsible for "billions of dollars of statutory damages and actual damages." Statutory damages mean the minimum amount the law decides, which the person or company accused would have to pay if proven guilty. The New York Times seeks money for "unlawful copying and use of The Times’s uniquely valuable works." In the lawsuit, The New York Times also demands the companies to destroy the chatbot models and training data that uses copyrighted material from The NY Times. In the lawsuit, American Newspaper also claims that it approached Microsoft and OpenAI in April to raise concerns about the use of intellectual property and copyrighted material. The lawsuit claimed that The New York Times wanted to be involved in a commercial agreement for the generative AI products. It also added that the talks did not come to a conclusion. An OpenAI spokeswoman, Lindsey Held, said in a statement that the company had been “moving forward constructively” in conversations with The Times and that it was “surprised and disappointed” by the lawsuit. “We respect the rights of content creators and owners and are committed to working with them to ensure they benefit from A.I. technology and new revenue models,” Ms. Held said. “We’re hopeful that we will find a mutually beneficial way to work together, as we are doing with many other publishers.” declined to comment on the case. Microsoft This year, OpenAI proved to be one of the most successful companies as its generative AI products like ChatGPT helped it to attract billions of dollars of investments, including from Microsoft. The New York Times accused OpenAI of using a variety of online texts, newspaper articles, poems, and even screenplays to train chatbots. OpenAI is now valued by investors at more than $80 billion. Microsoft has committed $13 billion to OpenAI and has incorporated the company’s technology into its Bing search engine. The lawsuit accused OpenAI of using the content from The New York Times without paying the company. “Defendants seek to free-ride on The Times’s massive investment in its journalism,” the complaint says, accusing OpenAI and Microsoft of “using The Times’s content without payment to create products that substitute for The Times and steal audiences away from it.” This year, there has been a rise in concerns about AI taking over jobs in creative fields because of its ability to mimic natural language and generate well-written responses to almost every prompt. Microsoft has previously acknowledged potential copyright concerns over its A.I. products. In September, the company announced that if customers using its were hit with copyright complaints, it would indemnify them and cover the associated legal costs. A.I. tools The lawsuit also declared ChatGPT and other AI tools as potential competitors in news publishing and as a source of the latest news. The newspaper expresses concern that readers will be satisfied with a response from a chatbot and decline to visit The Times’s website, thus reducing web traffic that can be translated into advertising and subscription revenue. The complaint cites several examples when a chatbot provided users with near-verbatim excerpts from Times articles that would otherwise require a paid subscription to view. It asserts that OpenAI and Microsoft placed particular emphasis on the use of Times journalism in training their A.I. programs because of the perceived reliability and accuracy of the material. Several media organizations have struck a deal with OpenAI which allows the tech company to license the news article for the training of its AI models. Some prominent media organizations are The Associated Press and Axel Springer, the owner of Politico and Business Insider. The lawsuit shows the example of how Bing generates texts that are owned by The Times but do not link to the page from which the text is taken. The outcome of the lawsuit is very significant as it can result in a law that can properly regulate this everchanging technology. Copyrighted materials or any original materials are the result of the hard work of one or more people. Their work should respected, and if it is used for training purposes, the owners should be paid well. This case also brings up the fact that training an AI model is way harder than anyone can think. You do not only need to have a technical field but knowledge in various others like law and language for this purpose. In conclusion, awareness should be spread among the public about this major problem. Legislators should work on formulating bills that encourage fair play in this new and awesome field, and authorities should create new methods to implement them. Also published here
