What if we could calculate the maximum path possible of every given triangle … with just one step? our only chance is to reduce the number of step Let’s take a triangle and reason about it. This is the triangle from the sample given by the problem, for which we already know that the maximum path is 23 (the one in red), or 3 + 7 +4 + 9. This is our first hint: This means that we could track the growing value of each path while we go down the triangle and choose the maximum at the end. Omri: Thank you so much for being on the show. To give content to our audience, can you talk about your role in Azul? : I already have 15 years of experience in the airline industry. I studied economics and got my master's in econometrics and quantitative methods. That led me to the curiosity of exploring new science and technologies. I have been working in Azul for more than 10 years already, switching roles between revenue and planning, and now I’m in charge of both departments which helps us a lot in synchronizing and taking the best out of both worlds while managing two big teams. Andre Omri: The aviation industry is going through major innovations right now, especially with AI. For a traditional industry like airlines, what are some of the greatest challenges that it’s currently facing? : I think many of the systems processes we use are still dated back from the 90s, and we have been trying to push those boundaries a little bit further as we explore new technologies, new ways of doing things, and experimenting with new processes. I think the industry, as a whole, is also evolving in terms of technology. We have been seeing many gains not only in the revenue planning field but also in our operations. We have recently been awarded with the number 1 in OTP in world rank, and that’s also due to new technologies, new ways, and new approaches to old problems. The airline industry is evolving a lot, but there’s a huge legacy and heirloom we have to adapt to why we make those changes and move on to new things. Andre Omri: How can the adoption of new AI technologies improve the airline industry as a whole, and how did it help Azul? : It helped us primarily in expanding our approach to the revenue problem. I think every airline in the world has a system to manage their revenue and inventories in an algorithmic, old-fashioned way. The reason we wanted to explore and try new technologies is to learn something different and to learn how these problems could be tackled differently. I think the biggest thing here was not the new kind of management and science being done behind the scenes, but all the learning that we got from this process, like how we can see things from a different angle, including more variables and perspectives in the data and how that leads us to better decisions. With Fetcherr, for example, we used more variables than the traditional RM system uses, and we are always trying to push new variables into the context of optimization so we can learn new stuff. Of course, many of them are trial and error, and that’s part of the learning process and what actually impacts demand, bookings, and revenue. Being able to adapt to new circumstances is in our DNA from the very beginning, and it’s not different when we approach the revenue optimization problem as well. Andre Omri: How data-driven are you today compared to how you were 6 or 7 years ago? : I wouldn’t say that the traditional systems aren’t data-driven, because they ingest thousands of data and they know all the major trends, but I think the big leap here is the current models that are in use is that they are statistically correct, but they cannot have a deep understanding of what’s going on and all the association between different data points and variables. I think that’s where the big gain is, is once we put more context in our analysis, and once we can link more dots among different variables, I think that’s where the real value is. Andre But the traditional systems got the whole industry to where they are and it has been evolving as well, but we thought a different approach would be adequate right now as we’re looking into expanding our ways of doing analysis – I always mention that because I think it’s really the core and create new understanding on the data that we currently have. All airlines have massive amounts of data, and just like our brains, we don’t use 100% of what we have. As the former President and Chief Strategy Officer of Aimia Inc. and Global Co-Head of Aviation – Corporate & Investment Banking at Deutsche Bank, he has advised clients in the aviation, travel technology, and transportation infrastructure sectors across the globe. Today, Omri and Nathaniel talk about the changing dynamics of the aviation industry, the impact of new competition, the evolution of business models, and the transformative power of innovative technologies within the airline sector. Omri: Hi Nathaniel, thank you for being on the show. Can you share a little bit about your background and how you got into this position that you’re currently at? Nathaniel: Of course. So, I spent 18 years as an investment banker. The last 11 were at Deutsche Bank where I was the global co-head of aviation, corporate, and investment banking focused on M&A and equity transactions with airlines, aircraft, and lessors but then built out a coverage area of all adjacencies, from loyalty companies and catering companies, to online travel agencies – everything other than the airline as well. At various times, I was based in London, in New York, but mostly based on planes where going to three continents in one week would be typical. And in most years, I would spend more nights on red-eye than in hotels. Omri: A lot of people in the aviation industry would say or . Can you discuss several specific business models that you’ve seen working for the companies that consult you with in the past, in recent years? you’re the strategy expert you’re the business model expert Nathaniel: I speak specifically of airlines. There are clearly cost-focused legacy carriers and they’re able to extract a revenue premium, and then low-cost carriers that are totally cost-focused and stimulate demand by having lower prices. From an airline perspective, they’re both models that are looking for profitability but go about it in different ways. One looking for a revenue premium, and one looking to stimulate by having the lowest costs in a market to get more travelers as opposed to getting more from each traveler. https://youtu.be/z4nZKAiML3Y?embedable=true Omri: In your experience, what are some of the common mistakes that those airlines are making in terms of business models and pricing costs? Nathaniel: It’s interesting. In the past, airlines have had to focus disproportionately on costs and trying to get efficiencies out of those costs, from those cost items, because they haven’t had good tools to extract revenue. Its revenue management and pricing within the airline space have been a bit of a dark art, and only now are tools catching up with the needs of the sector. And I think that’s a function of, frankly, COVID acting as a reset. So what was historically kind of sacred cows and things that you couldn’t change now are very much being open to being revisited, and technology is helping to facilitate that. Omri: Like in other industries, like the finance industry, we saw how algo trading has been able to take place and really amplify and optimize the way this industry operates. You talked about a reset. Do you think now’s the time to insert algo trading into the aviation industry and finally go all in on it? Nathaniel: Much like pre-algo trading, there were greater inefficiencies between trading. There were greater spreads between prices and that enabled middlemen. Now, that’s going to change. There’s a move away from that within airlines and travel more broadly. And that’s a function, frankly, of the fact that airlines are the hero brands within the travel space. If you think about an OTA, it’s an online travel agency, and has to build a brand to generate traffic or it has to be the lowest price. The move is that passengers are now booking 50+ percent directly with the airline. But as that moves from 50 towards 100, the airline gets pricing power, the consumer gets a lower price, and unfortunately, OTA business models may be disrupted. Omri: What are the most promising investment opportunities in the aviation industry? Nathaniel: There’s a lot, but I think one has to recognize that startups within the space typically underestimate how difficult it is to break into airlines, given some of their legacies and rightly resistance to change. So, this is a space that is clearly very tech-dependent, but innovation lags, and startups can often be very innovative but haven’t fully built out their tech stack. It’s not an airline’s bulletproof standard that it needs to be. And I think that’s where often the challenges for startups really start and then kind of compound over time. Also published here

Tech Is Shaping the Airlines Business: Here's How

(NFA, DYOR) Composed of four elements, and , a SWOT analysis framework provides excellent insight for evaluating the state of a project’s well-being through the lens of a birds-eye view. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats It can help formulate decisions on what areas require more attention, set performance goals, and organize a foundational understanding of where a project is headed. Rarely (if ever) used in crypto, it is time to apply this timeless method of evaluation to the digital asset space. Today, ( ) the ultra-scalable, interoperable, EVM-compatible, layer zero blockchain network will get a SWOT. Avalanche AVAX , 💪Strengths (Internal) (Helpful) Subnet System Interoperability was, is, and will be a fundamentally important aspect of technological innovation. Avalanche utilizes an interchain architecture using subnets. Subnets are individual blockchains launched for their own purposes, by their own communities. The ability to deploy chain on-demand is attractive to new entrants to the marketplace with its modularity and flexibility around dictating the operational specification (finality, transaction throughput, consensus model, etc.). By abstracting away the immense infrastructural necessitations for building blockchains from scratch, Avalanche becomes capable of attracting enormous amounts of economic value. When adding customization to the interoperability and tieing it together with security and scalability, Avalanche seems like a perfect solution for many startups. Triple-Stack Architecture Avalanche is actually a single system that is composed of three different underlying blockchains. The project initially set out to solve the single biggest technological problem in the industry called the "Blockchain Trilemma". To do this, they developed an architecture that splits the computational logic into three distinct components with each form of logic getting its own dedicated blockchain; X-chain, C-chain, and P-chain. The X Chain stands for exchange chain and is explicitly designed to handle trade-related functionality. C-Chain stands for contract chain and is designed to deal with decentralized applications. P-chain is the platform chain that deals with the coordination and management of nodes and subnets. Growth in crypto-stablecoin (Btc.b) Bitcoin being the reserve asset of the industry, nearly all advanced protocols are always building up their treasuries or actively pursuing the injection of BTC into its on-chain ecosystem via wrapped assets. Avalanche is among the few leading projects that have been able to attract Bitcoin into its ecology via the BTC.B protocol (Bridged Bitcoin). Despite the presence of tumultuous macro market conditions, the amount of BTC.B reserves has actually been growing. Interest of this type shows strong levels of confidence in the security of the technology. Business Development is Excellent The core team of Avalanche is not just technically gifted, they are keenly aware of foundational socio-economic principles underlying successful implementation and express this through their devotion to Business Development. Avalanche Consensus Another technical element that makes Avalanche stand out is its own distributed consensus mechanism called Snowman. The genius of its design is found in how neatly it extrapolated the most desirable properties for distributed systems by combining the highly secure, decentralized, leaderless Nakamoto consensus with a novel stake-based DAG (directed acyclic graph) consensus transaction model. Most notable about its consensus model's security is the claim that it is resilient against the strongest network attack that even Bitcoin cannot protect against, the 51% attack. Considering such lofty security guarantees are coupled with its throughput of 6,500 tps and sub-second blocktime, the technology is almost too good to be true… But it works! Thorough Documentation So many projects, especially from the newer generations, lack providing the intellectual infrastructure of well-made documentation. Few projects go the extra mile to cement their thought leadership in this domain; Avalanche is the absolute hallmark of excellence when it comes to this. They have a breadth of organized, orderly, easily accessible, documentation (in the form of blogs, whitepapers, developer guides, and other resources) that succinctly describes every individual element of their thinking. When comparing documentation repositories of the top 100 projects on CoinMarketCap, AVAX easily belongs in the top 5. 😞 Weaknesses (Internal) (Harmful) Loose AVAX Tokenomics Despite the brilliant architecture, Avalanche's ecosystem is not hard tied to the token. Being able to capture the delta of value from different networks for their individual and cross-chain needs seems like an obvious win. However, the current tokenomic design does not require subnets to pay for their activities in AVAX; they actually allow subnets to specify which token they want to use (and many opt for their own). Low Circulating AVAX Supply Being a tier-one project, it is interesting to find two shortcomings that are related to the token of the project. One thing about AVAX that stands out is its low circulating supply. Marked at ~48% as of this writing, the circulating supply of AVAX is the lowest among the top 40. This could be due to imperfections in the accounting methodologies, but in any case, having a sub-50% circulating supply (especially for a project that is ~3 years old) does result in potentially undesirable price suppression and excessive volatility. 🧐 Opportunities (External) (Helpful) Major Protocol Integrations Many of the industries leading projects including, UniSwap, OpenSea, LayerZero, Balancer, Tokeny, UnoFarm, and The Graph, among others, have expressed support for the Avalanche ecosystem. Considering that AVAX is already home to a few tier-one protocols (AAVE and TraderJoe) the influx of interest from other prominent protocols will lead to a positive feedback loop for on-chain TVL with interchain, interasset composability. Attracting a new generation of GameFI Defi Kingdoms is considered to be one of (if not the) most successful blockchain-based games thus far. Their experimentations have led to results so positive that some of the most powerful gaming entities becoming attracted to launching their own subnets for their gaming communities. Team SoloMid (TSM), one of the gaming industry's more recognizable esports organizations will be launching their Blitz Subnet and using AVAX as their gas token. GREE, a Japanese gaming and media conglomerate has joined the ecosystem. LOCO, an Indian Streaming platform has signed on and also agreed to deploy its own dedicated subnet. In addition to all of the incoming participants, Avalanche has been putting in substantial efforts in hosting metaverse gaming events by attending/sponsoring gaming expos. Partnerships with Dominant Web 2 Giants Amazon Web Services (AWS) partnership program to promote the adoption of blockchain technology and one-click AVAX node deployment. Tencent Cloud partnership for providing Avalanche Subnets to institutions, enterprises, and governments. Relationships with Web 2 technology companies of this caliber hint at broader adoption and potential for building new partnerships with greater ease moving forward. 😳 Threats (External) (Harmful) On-Chain Metrics are stale Key data points that leading base layer blockchain projects use to distinguish themselves and establish prominence such as the amount of active verified smart contracts, active developer count, active addresses, and transaction volume are surprisingly laggy and have not had the same rate of change in the positive direction as other networks of similar level. Takeaway: Avalanche is a technological powerhouse. The level of innovation happening at the base layer protocol and the unique angle that the project has taken, positions it to outgrow many of its potential competitors. While the lackluster tokenomics and on-chain metrics may present themselves as unfavorable, once they are addressed, nothing is stopping AVAX from setting industry-breaking records. I rarely regard documentation as a metric for gauging a project's health, (this should just be a given), but in my opinion, Avalanche strikes the perfect balance of informational provision. Conclusion: This SWOT most likely has been skewed by my bias. I do hold some AVAX and believe in the project. Fundamentally, Avalanche might just be the only solution on the market that might be able to solve the blockchain trilemma; if this happens, then the project will be inducted into the technological hall of fame and leave its mark on the industry for eternity. SWOT Analysis: Avalanche (AVAX)

In the seat beside him, which Captain Hobart should be occupying, there now squirmed an alien warrior who apparently was uncomfortable in the chair-like depression so different from the low stools he was accustomed to. Soriki was still in the second passenger place, but he, too, shared that with another of the men from the city who rested across bony knees a strange weapon rather like a Terran rifle. No, the spacemen were not prisoners. According to the official statement they were allies. But, Raf wondered, as against his will he followed the globe in a northeastern course, how long would that fiction last if they refused to fall in with any suggestions the aliens might make? He did not doubt that there was on board the globe some surprise which could shoot the flitter out of the air, if, for example, he adjusted the controls before him and bore west toward the mountains and the safety of the space ship. Either of the aliens he now transported could bring him under control by using those weapons, which might do anything from boiling a man in some unknown ray to smothering him in gas. He had not seen the arms in action, and he did not want to. Yet Hobart and Lablet did not, as far as he could tell, share his suspicions. Lablet was eager to see the mysterious storehouse, and the captain was either moved by the same desire or else had long since deduced the folly of trying to make a break for it Thus they were now heading seaward with the captain and Lablet sharing quarters with the leaders of the expedition on board the globe, and Raf and the com-tech, with companions—or guards—bringing up the rear. The aliens had even insisted on stripping the flitter of much of its Terran equipment before they left the city, pointing out that the cleared storage space would be filled with salvage when they made the return voyage. The globe had been trailing along the coastline, and now it angled out to glide over a long finger of cape, rocky and waterworn, which pointed at almost a right angle into the sea. This dwindled into a reef of rock, like the nail on a finger. The sea ahead was no unbroken expanse. Instead there was a series of islands, some merely tops of reefs over which the waves broke, others more substantial, rising well above the threatening water, and one or two showing the green of vegetation. The chain of islets extended so far out that when the flitter passed over the last one the main continent was out of sight. Now only water stretched beneath them. The globe skidded on as if its pilot had given it an extra burst of power, and Raf accelerated in turn, having no desire to lose his guide. But they were not to make the ocean-wide trip in one jump. At midday he saw again a break in the smooth carpet of waves, another island, or perhaps the southern tip of a northern continent for the land swept in that direction as far as he could see. The globe spiraled down to make a neat landing on a flat plateau, and Raf prepared to join it. When the undercarriage of the flitter jarred lightly on the rock, he saw signs that this was a man-or alien-fashioned place which must have had much use in the dim past when his new companions ruled all their native world. The rock had been smoothed off to a flat surface, and at its perimeter were several small domed buildings. Yet, as there had been in the countryside and in the city, except at its very heart, there was an aura of desertion at the site. Both his alien passengers jumped out of the flitter, as if only too pleased at their release from the Terran flyer. For the first time Raf was shaken out of his own preoccupation with his dislike for the aliens to wonder if they could be moved by a similar distaste for Terrans. Lablet might be interested in that as a scientific problem—the pilot only knew how he felt and that was not comfortable. Soriki got out and walked across the rock, stretching. But for a long moment Raf remained where he was, behind the controls of the flyer. He was as cramped and tired of travel as the com-tech, perhaps even more so since the responsibility of the flight had been his. And had they landed in open country he would have liked to have thrown himself down on the ground, taking off his helmet and unhooking his tunic collar to let the fresh wind blow through his hair and across his skin. Perhaps that would take away the arid dust of centuries, which, to his mind, had grimed him since their hours in the city. But here was no open country, only a landing space which reminded him too much of the roof of the building in the metropolis. A half-dozen of the breastplated warriors filed out of the globe and went to the nearest dome, returning with heavy boxes. Fuel—supplies—Raf shrugged off the problem. The pilot was secretly relieved when Captain Hobart dropped out of the hatch in the globe and made his way over to the flitter. "Everything running smoothly?" he asked with a glance at the two aliens who were Raf's passengers. "Yes, sir. Any idea how much farther—?" Raf questioned. Hobart shrugged. "Until we work out basic language difficulties," he muttered, "who knows anything? There is at least one more of these way stations. They don't run on atomics, need some kind of fuel, and they have to have new supplies every so often. Their head man can't understand why it isn't necessary for us to do the same." "Has he suggested that his techneers want a look at our motors, sir?" Hobart unbent a little. It was as if in that question he had read something which pleased him. "So far we've managed not to understand that. And if anyone tries it on his own, refer him to me—understand?" "Yes, sir!" Some of the relief in Raf's tone came through, and he saw that the captain was watching him narrowly. "You don't like these people, Kurbi?" The pilot replied with the truth. "I don't feel easy with them, sir. Not that they've shown any unfriendliness. Maybe it's because they're alien—" He had said the wrong thing and knew it immediately. "That sounds like prejudice, Kurbi!" Hobart's voice carried the snap of a reprimand. "Yes, sir," Raf said woodenly. That had done it as far as the captain was concerned. The fierce racial and economical prejudices which had been the keystones of the structure of Pax had left their shadow on Terra's thinking. Nowadays a man would better be condemned for murder than for prejudice against another—it was the unforgivable crime. And in that unconsidered answer Raf had rendered unreliable in the eyes of authority any future report on the aliens which he might be forced to make. Silently cursing his lack of judgment, Raf made a careful check of the flyer, which might not be necessary but going through the motions of doing his duty gave him some relief. Once the idea struck him of claiming some trouble that would take them back to the spacer for repairs. But Hobart was too good a mechanic himself not to see through that. They covered the second stage of their flight by evening, this time putting down on an island where, by some ancient and titanic feat of labor, the top had been sheared off a central mountain to make a base. A ring of reefs cut off the land from the action of the waves. At once a party of aliens left the main company and made their way down the mountain to prowl along the shore. They made a discovery of sorts, for Raf saw them ring in some object they had pulled up on the sand. What it was and what meaning it had for them they did not try to explain to the Terrans. The party spent the night there, the four spacemen wrapped in their sleeping rolls by the flitter, the aliens in their globe ship. The Terrans did not miss the fact that the others had unobtrusively posted guards at the only two places where the mountain could be climbed. And each of those guards cradled in the crook of his arm one of the rifle weapons. They were aroused shortly after dawn. As far as Raf could see the island was barren of life, or else any creature native to it kept prudently out of the way while the flyers were there. They took off, the globe rising like a balloon into the morning sky, the flitter waiting until it was air-borne before scaling after it. The mountainous island where they had based was the sea sentinel of an archipelago, which they saw spread out below them as if someone had flung a handful of pebbles into a shallow pool. Most of the islands were merely rocky crags. But there were two which showed the green of small open fields, and Raf thought he caught a glimpse of a dome house on the last. They were now over a region thick with islands, the first collection giving way to a second and then a third. Raf, expecting no sudden move on the part of the globe he trailed, was startled when the alien ship made a downward swoop. At the same time the warrior seated beside him tugged at the sleeve of his tunic and jabbed a finger toward the ground, clearly an order to follow. Raf cut speed and cautiously lost altitude, determined that he was not going to be rushed into any move for which he did not know the reason. The globe was hovering over a small island set a little apart from the others. A moment later Soriki's excited voice drew Raf's attention from his controls to what was going on below. "There's, people down there! Look at them run!" They were too far away to be sure of the nature of the brown-gray things so close to the color of the sea-washed rock that they could only be detected when they moved. But it was evident that they were alive, and as Raf brought the flitter closer, he was also certain that they ran on their two hind feet instead of on an animal's four pads. From the under part of the globe ship licked a tongue of fire. With the force of a whiplash it coursed across the rock and in its passing embrace, the creatures below writhed and withered to charred heaps. They had no chance under that methodical blasting. The alien beside Raf signaled again for a drop. He patted the weapon that he held and motioned for Raf to release the covering of the windshield. But the pilot shook his head firmly. This might be war. The aliens could have a very good reason for their deadly attack on the creatures surprised below. But he wanted no part of it, nor did he want to get any closer to the scene of slaughter. And he made an emphatic gesture that the windshield could not be opened while the flitter was air-borne. But as he did so they glided down, and he caught a single good look at what was going on on the rock—a look which remained to haunt his dreams for long years to come. For now he saw clearly the creatures who ran fruitlessly for safety. Some reached the edge of the cliff and leaped to what was an easier death in the sea. But too many others could not make it and died in flaming agony. And they were not all of one size! Children! There was no mistaking the infant in its mother's arms, the two small ones who fled hand in hand until one stumbled and the burning lash caught them both as the other strove to pull the fallen to its feet. Raf gagged. He triggered the controls and soared up and away, fighting the heaving in his middle, shaking off with one savage jerk the insistent pawing hand of the alien who wanted to join in the fun. "Did you see that?" he demanded of Soriki. For once the com-tech sounded subdued. "Yes," he replied shortly. "Those were children," Raf hammered home the point. "Young ones anyway," the com-tech conceded. "Maybe they aren't people. They had fur all over them—" Raf grinned mirthlessly. Should he now accuse Soriki of prejudice? What did it matter if a thinking creature was clothed in a space suit, silken bandages, or natural fur—it was still a thinking creature. And he was sure that those had been intelligent creatures he had just seen blasted without a chance to fight back. If these were the enemy the aliens feared, he could understand the vicious cruelty of the attack which had killed the man he had been shown back in the city. Fire against primitive spears was not equal, and when the spears got their chance they must make up for much to balance the scales of justice. He did not even wonder why his emotions were so wholeheartedly enlisted upon the side of the furred people. Nor did he try to analyze his feelings. He was only sure that more than ever he wanted to be free of the aliens and out of this whole venture. The warrior sharing his seat was sulking now, twisting about to look back at the island as Raf circled in ever-widening glides to get away from the site and yet not lose track of the globe when it would have finished its dirty business and take once more to the air. But the alien ship was in no hurry to leave. "They are making sure," Soriki reported. "Giving the whole island a fire bath. I wonder what that stuff is—" "I'd just as soon not know," Raf returned from between set teeth. "If that is one of their pieces of precious knowledge, we're as well off without it—" he stopped short. Perhaps he had said too much. But Terra had been racked by the torrid horror of atomic war, until all his kind had been so revolted that it was bred into them not to meddle again with such weapons. And war by fire aroused in them that old horror. Surely Soriki must feel it too, and when the com-tech did not comment, Raf was sure of that. He hoped that the slaughter had made some impression on the captain and on Lablet into the bargain. But when, as if sated with killing, the globe rose again from its position over the island, moving almost sluggishly into the fresh sky, he had to follow it on. More islands were below, and he feared that each one might show some sign of life and tempt the killers to a second hunting. Luckily that did not happen. The chains of islands became a cape as they had on the coast of the western continent. And now the globe swung to the south, trail ing the shore line. Forests made green splotches with bluish overtones running from the sea cliffs back to carpet the land. So far no signs of civilization were to be seen. This land was as untouched as that where the spacer had landed. Then they saw the bay, stretching out wide arms to engulf the sea. It could have harbored a whole fleet. And marching down to its waters were broad levels of buildings, a giant's staircase leading from sea to cliff tops. "They had it here—!" Raf saw what Soriki meant by that outburst. Destruction had struck. He had seen the atomic ruins of his own world, those which were free enough from radiation to explore. But he had never seen anything like these chilling scars. In long strips the very stone which provided foundation for the tiered city had been churned and boiled, had run in rivulets of lava down to the sea, enclosing narrow tongues of still untouched structures. The fire whip the globe had used, magnified to some infinitely greater extent—? It could be. The alien at his side pressed tightly against the windshield gazing down at the ruins. And now he mouthed a gabble of words which was echoed by his fellow sitting with Soriki. Their excitement must mean that this was their goal. Raf slacked speed, waiting for the globe to point a way to a landing. But to his surprise the alien ship shot forward inland. The long day was almost over as they came to a second city with a river knotting a ribbon through its middle. Here were no traces of the fury which had laded the seaport with havoc. This collection of buildings seemed whole and perfect. There was, oddly enough, no landing strip within the city. The globe coasted over the rough oval and came down in open fields to the west. It was a maneuver which Raf copied, though he first dropped a flare as a precaution and brought the flier down in its red glare, with the warrior expressing shrill disapproval. "I don't think they like fireworks," Soriki remarked. Raf snorted. "So they don't like fireworks! Well, I don't like crack-ups, and I'm the pilot!" But he didn't believe that the com-tech was really protesting. Soriki had been very quiet since they had witnessed the attack on the island. "Grim-looking place," was his second comment as they touched ground. Since Raf privately had held that opinion of all the alien settlements he had so far seen, he agreed. Their two alien passengers were out of the flitter as soon as he opened the bubble shield. And as they stood by the Terran flyer, they held their weapons ready, facing out into the dusk as if they half expected trouble. After the earlier episode that day, Raf did not wonder at their preparedness. Terror begets terror, and ruthlessness arouses retaliation in kind. "Kurbi! Soriki!" Hobart's voice sounded out of the shadows. "Stay where you are for the present." Soriki settled deeper in his seat. "He doesn't have to tell me to brake jets," he muttered. "I like it here—" Raf did not need to echo that. He had a strong surmise that had he been tempted to roam away from the flitter the move would not have been encouraged by the alien guardsmen. If this was their treasure city, they would not welcome any independent investigation by strangers. When the captain joined them, he was accompanied by the officer who had first shown Raf the globe. And the warrior was either disturbed or angry, for he was talking in a steady stream and his hands were whirling in explanatory gestures. "They didn't like that flare," Hobart remarked. But there was no reproof in his words. As a spacer pilot he knew that Raf had only done what duty demanded. "We're to remain here—for the night." "Where's Lablet?" Soriki wanted to know. "He's staying with Yussoz, the alien commander. He thinks he has the language problem about solved." "Good enough." Soriki pulled out his bed roll. "We're out of touch with the ship—" There was a second of silence, unduly prolonged it seemed to Raf. Then Hobart spoke: "We couldn't expect to keep in call forever. The best com has its range. When did you lose contact?" "Just before these wrapped-up heroes played with fire back there. I gave the boys all I knew up until then. They know we were headed west, and they had us beamed as long as they could." So it wasn't too bad, thought Raf. But he didn't like it, even with that mitigating factor. To all purposes the four Terrans were now surrounded by some twenty times their number, in an unknown country, out of all communication with the rest of their kind. It could add up to disaster. Although Ethereum has firmly established itself as the leading blockchain platform capable of running smart contracts, it isn’t without its defects. It has solved some of its problems, such as enormous energy consumption by switching to a proof-of-stake consensus protocol. However, scaling issues continue to exist. Ethereum has a low transaction throughput (approximately 15 transactions per second), slow transaction finality (around 1 minute), and at times high gas fees when the network is under strain. Avalanche is an independent blockchain platform designed to overcome some of the barriers to scalability mentioned above. In this article, we will explore what Avalanche is and its benefits compared to other blockchain platforms. We will also create an ERC-20 smart contract on Avalanche from scratch using Infura. What Is Avalanche? According to its website, Avalanche is the fastest smart contracts platform in the blockchain industry, as measured by time-to-finality. Unlike Ethereum or Bitcoin, Avalanche consists of several chains, each performing a specific task. The Avalanche network's three most important chains are the C-Chain, the X-Chain, and the P-Chain. The C-Chain is an EVM-compatible blockchain capable of running smart contracts. The X-Chain is responsible for token transactions. And finally, the P-Chain maintains consensus among subnets, arguably the most critical component of Avalanche. Through , Avalanche allows anyone to spin up their own instance of a blockchain within the ecosystem. Additionally, users can customize these blockchains to suit their own needs. These custom blockchains can use different consensus protocols (proof-of-work or proof-of-stake) and offer over 4,500 transactions per second without putting any additional strain on the rest of the network. Each one is a sovereign network that defines its own rules. subnets Subnets are one of the most unique features Avalanche offers. Not only can anyone build their own custom blockchain network as a subnet, each one is completely interoperable with the rest of the Avalanche network. This makes subnets a powerful tool for creating custom solutions, while still being part of a broader network. Benefits of Using Avalanche Through the usage of subnets and novel consensus protocols, Avalanche can provide the following benefits: Since there is no upper cap on the number of subnets that can be created, and subnets operate fairly independently, Avalanche can offer extraordinarily high tps rates. Theoretically Infinite Transactions Per Second Avalanche has the lowest time-to-finality in the industry, with transaction confirmation in under two seconds. Low Transaction Finality Avalanche uses proof-of-stake to secure its network, which makes it extremely energy efficient. It also allows validators without access to high-end GPUs to participate. Energy Efficient Over thousands of validators secure Avalanche. And unlike Ethereum or Bitcoin, a small number of pools do not control the vast majority of the network. Extremely Decentralized Creating an ERC-20 Token with Avalanche As mentioned earlier, the Avalanche C-Chain is entirely EVM-compatible. This means it's simple to port projects from Ethereum and other EVM-based chains onto Avalanche. It also means that the mature tools for Ethereum development like devnet, Truffle, and top API suite, Infura work natively to develop on Avalanche. In this section of the article, we will create an ERC-20 contract that implements a cryptocurrency on Avalanche. We will do so using Solidity, Infura, Truffle, and the Truffle Dashboard. Step 1: Install the MetaMask Extension Install the for your browser in case you haven’t already, and follow the instructions put forward by Metamask to create your wallet. MetaMask extension Step 2: Add Avalanche and Fuji Testnet to MetaMask By default, MetaMask comes configured with only the Ethereum mainnet and Goerli testnet. In order to add the Avalanche C-Chain, and the Fuji testnet, follow the instructions in . this document Step 3: Get AVAX from a Faucet Head over to the on the Avalanche website and request a free test AVAX for your wallet. Securitize Launches Tokenized Fund on Avalanche, Unblocking Broader Access to Alternative Investment

Scaling Through Subnets Subnets, or subnetworks, by definition, are networks inside of a network that help a network scale. In the blockchain sense, the concept of subnets is similar in that they’re almost special blockchains that operate within a blockchain ecosystem. Subnets spawned from the issue of blockchain scalability. For example, there are two ways to scale a blockchain without sacrificing decentralization — vertical scaling (fast transaction processing) and horizontal scaling (replicating the number of blockchains you have and processing them in parallel). However, depending on the blockchain, there are limitations to scaling vertically. Therefore, many chains such as Ethereum view horizontal scaling through sharding as a solution. For example, to break up the chain into smaller chains that replicate the entire Ethereum state. As a way to do scaling in its own right, the Avalanche blockchain created subnets, which allow developers to launch their own blockchains, instead of forcing all transactions to take place on a single shared state. This creates more block space and computation to meet demand. Interestingly, and not widely reported on, Avalanche was not the first layer 1 to use subnets. In fact, the Internet Computer was the earliest major blockchain to implement subnets into its architecture. So how are Avalanche’s subnets different from the Internet Computer’s? And who has the ‘best’ subnets for developers to use? An In-Depth Look Into Avalanche Subnets Avalanche is an EVM-compatible blockchain that has three chains in its primary network — the Contract Chain (C-Chain), Platform Chain (P-Chain), and Exchange Chain (X-Chain). The C-Chain is smart contracts, the P-Chain is for coordinating validators, subnets, and the Snowman consensus protocol, and the X-Chain is for trading and transacting digital assets. Because of limited block space and demand for Avalanche, the C-Chain became congested, therefore, the P-Chain’s use of subnets is a solution to the scalability problem. For Avalanche, subnets are a type of Blockchain-as-a-Service function that projects, businesses, and individuals can use to run their blockchain-based applications, whether they be games like DeFi Kingdom or Crabada, or enterprise-specific applications. Subnets have an advantage in that they’re a sovereign network that defines its own rules regarding membership and even tokens and tokenomics. For example, you can spin up an application and create a token, and not be required to use AVAX or USDC. Another benefit is that they allow the network to scale up easily while enabling lower latency, higher TPS, and lower transaction costs — thus, making it an attractive option for developers. However, Avalanche subnets have a few downsides such as interoperability with other subnets, validator costs, back-end centralization, bootstrapping, decentralization, and security. How Does The Internet Computer Employ Subnets? A subnet is a special kind of blockchain within the Internet Computer network that can seamlessly integrate with other blockchains to increase capacity. This is their main purpose i.e., to increase the scalability and capacity of the network (similar to a network effect). For example, the more subnets there are, the more activity the network is seeing. Therefore, when there are more subnets being created, it means the network is strong. There are currently live on the Internet Computer. 35 subnets Subnet Tech-stack Each subnet is a blockchain that consists of some number of decentralized, independently owned, and controlled machines (nodes) that run the software components of the Internet Computer blockchain protocol. However, subnets don’t just magically appear, in fact, the Network Nervous System (the governance mechanism) combines nodes from the independent data centers to create subnets, which are then used to host canister smart contracts. Each subnet runs its own blockchain, and canisters run on-chain in such a way that they can transparently call canisters on other subnets/chains. In summary, the Internet Computer uses subnets to allow the network to scale indefinitely. This is because the problem with traditional blockchains (and individual subnets) is that they’re limited by the computing power of a single node machine because every node has to run everything that happens on the blockchain to participate in the consensus algorithm (think AVAX validators). Therefore, running multiple independent subnets in parallel allows the Internet Computer to break through this single-machine barrier. Main Takeaways For The Advantages Of Internet Computer Subnets Subnets allow canisters to run on-chain with complete scalability, security, and speed, all while maintaining decentralization. Internet Computer subnets are safer because the canister data is replicated by the number of nodes. Thus if a node goes down, another node can still run the computations and keep the subnet alive. For example, we said above that there are 35 subnets, therefore the canister is replicated 35 times. So if a node goes down on one subnet, it will not impact the consensus, and the data will not be lost. Without subnets, there are no canisters, and thus no smart contract functionality on the Internet Computer. Therefore, subnets are a vastly underrated part of the Internet Computer tech stack that cannot be forgotten. Internet Computer subnets, because of this smart contract functionality, give it a huge advantage over Avalanche subnets. For example, canisters in one subnet can send transactions to other subnets, which means they can communicate with each other and do smart contract computations. The Avalanche network’s subnets cannot do this.

When investing in a mutual fund, the user’s objective should be to outperform the market, but with an index fund, user should aim to achieve market performance. Index funds have lower management expenses (sometimes known as "expense ratios") than mutual funds since they do not need daily human administration. Fee savings from choosing an index fund versus a mutual fund may add significant long-term savings and increased returns. Crypto-based Index funds are a novel method for DeFi investors to gain exposure to the basket of tokens on Avalanche and can be a game changer as it allows professional investors to gain exposure to the larger DeFi market. Why are Index Instruments critical for the Avalanche DeFi ecosystem? Since an index is a collection of assets, it reduces risk without reducing potential reward and provides a diverse pool of underlying investments. If we gave you 10 million dollars to invest in something today, what would you invest in and why? I would invest most of the money in the army of Ukraine. Russia attacked us on February 24. I would like to give the other part of the money to mothers and children who suffered from the war. I have heard many terrible and tragic stories; I would like to at least somehow drown out the pain that mothers feel. Also, I would sponsor the education of some creative people. I want peace and I want the world to know that in Ukraine are a lot of creative designers. 9. What advice would you give to someone just starting in this field? Write a plan for the future article, and find useful links. Start writing, even if you don't think it will work. It may seem difficult, but you can come back to it in a week after you create a draft and refine it. Ava Labs has launched a contest calling for written developer tutorials to Subnets. The goal is to expand our library of resources available to projects that want to launch Subnets. We want to make the short process even easier for developers. After the contest, we plan to add 5 to 10 tutorials written by you, our contest participants, to the . official Avalanche docs Anyone can submit to our Subnet Tutorial Contest. The contest begins today, June 6, and ends on August 2. All submissions that follow the official rules (below) will be considered to win some of the $32K prize pool. All selected tutorials will win $1,000. Every tutorial that goes through revision processes and completes Avalanche’s feedback rounds will win additional incentives as outlined on the contest terms & conditions at the bottom of this page. Following the successful but expensive launch and sales of digital land plots of Yuga Labs’ metaverse, Ava Labs submitted a proposal suggesting that Avalanche is the ideal blockchain ecosystem for the highly anticipated Otherside metaverse. The proposal highlighted Avalanche’s high transaction speed and low fees as some of the benefits of launching Otherside on Avalanche. Though the proposal in itself is not the problem, it is the way Ava Labs went about it that raises suspicions about its true intentions. In light of some of the back and forth involving the sponsor, supporters, and critics of this proposal, there are reasons to believe that the ApeCoin community may be under parasite attack. How it all started The launch and mint sales of Otherside land NFTs in April reminded us of what we already know: congestion and exorbitant fees are recurring issues of the Ethereum blockchain, at least for the time being. With around spent as fees to mint Otherside’s NFTs, it became clear that Yuga Labs (the core development team of the Bored Ape Yacht Club’s ecosystem) had to identify and implement ways of limiting the impact of Ethereum’s frailties on future expansion projects. This is particularly true for the highly anticipated launch of Otherside. $180 million worth of ETH In response to the tumultuous sales of Otherside’s digital lands, Yuga Labs that perhaps it was time for ApeCoin to ditch the Ethereum landscape and “migrate to its own chain in order to properly scale.” The company further encouraged the ApeCoin DAO, the decentralized autonomous organization made up of ApeCoin holders who propose and vote on the future development of the APE ecosystem, to consider this possibility. proposed Understandably, this statement sparked lots of conversation centered around the future of the ApeCoin ecosystem, with the latest being the brazen attempt by Ava Labs to sway ApeCoin DAO to opt for a blockchain solution powered by Avalanche. Most of the commentators that Yuga Labs had intentionally opted for an inefficient launch and mint sale model in order to put the spotlight on Ethereum’s flaws and convince stakeholders of the need to create a dedicated blockchain for ApeCoin. believed What did Ava Labs propose? In the proposal idea on May 24, 2022, Ava Labs argued that the launch of Otherside on Avalanche promises “future community growth through rapid transaction processing, higher throughput, greater ability to scale, and lower gas fees.” The whole idea centers around Avalanche’s ability to power dedicated blockchains called subnets that can provide a smooth transactional experience driven by a native currency of the app's choosing. In the case of the ApeCoin subnet, fees will be low compared to Ethereum’s current rates, and they will be paid in APE tokens, thereby creating one more utility for holders. published What is wrong with Ava Labs’ proposal? The core bone of contention centers around the manner in which the proposal has been pitched to ApeCoin DAO and the unfolding events resulting from it. First and foremost, Ava Labs’ proposal focuses on the launch of Otherside on Avalanche, a topic that does not fall under the purview of ApeCoin DAO, being that Otherside is the sole product of Yuga Labs. This important fact was made known by some commentators on the governance forum discussion on Avalanche’s proposal. “For clarity, ApeCoin DAO is not responsible for nor represents anything related to Otherside, as that is a Yuga Labs property,” one commentator, adding that it is up to Yuga Labs to use ApeCoin on Otherside. stated It is also worth noting that Ava Labs executives while speaking with Andrew Hayward of , revealed that the company was yet to communicate directly with Yuga Labs about its proposal. Therefore, it is a bit odd that the company's first course of action was to approach ApeCoin DAO rather than Yuga Labs, which had more control over the future of Otherside. Decrypt Another talking point raised by ApeCoin DAO members was that the proposed migration to Avalanche would rob users of the composability, security, and liquidity that Ethereum provides. It also did not help that Ava Labs did not mention anywhere in the proposal that staking AVAX is one of the requirements for creating a subnet and becoming a validator. In particular, all validators are required to stake 2,000 AVA. There was also skepticism concerning the decentralization, or the lack thereof, of the Avalanche ecosystem. More specifically, the network’s bridge is controlled by 4 wardens (validators), a design decision that could potentially expose the network to risks associated with centralization. “They (Avalanche supporters) blame polygon for their multi-sig (and while I agree with this), they forget to mention that their own bridge is controlled by only 4 validators/companies (which, if asked by a court, will freeze all the bridged funds),” one commentator. said As for most of these critics, they would prefer to stick with Ethereum even though they wouldn't mind exploring the possibilities of adopting a layer 2 Ethereum solution. The parasite attack As stated earlier, it was the way Ava Labs went about pitching its proposal that is disturbing. There was no real reason for the company to go all out to submit a proposal idea on ApeCoin’s community forum when it had not yet consulted or communicated with Yuga Labs. This entire fiasco also conveniently aligns with Yuga Labs’ perceived attempt to convince everyone that Ethereum is not the ideal blockchain network for the ApeCoin ecosystem. Secondly, the Ava team initially did not attempt to reply to community members’ questions or quell their fears. Instead, Ava Labs thought it wise to grant interviews in which some of its team members suggested that they had received positive feedback from ApeCoin’s community. One of the ApeCoin DAO members commented that they have already started to benefit from parasitizing on the community, "even before voting." He revealed that the Avalanche team is actively pitching crypto media using their name and getting promotional publications for their brand. He said "Check one of the articles that they got, it’s from it looks more like sponsored content than a piece of regular news. I can’t say intentionally or not, but it seems like the author did not even bother himself to check the community's opinions for the proposal, giving full voice to the Avalanche team." He also said that "the Avalanche team members (Head of Strategy Phillip Liu and Head of Gaming Ed Chang) are misleading the reporter saying that “they’ve seen positive feedback from the Bored Ape community”. Andrew Hayward for Decrypt 2 “Right now the Avalanche team is trying to infiltrate our community in order to use us as a source of profit, and I believe they will damage us until the project is exhausted and destroyed. This is a parasite attack,” a concerned member of the discussion forum.  It was only after concerns such as this were raised that Phillip Liu, Ava Labs Head of Strategy, decided to join the conversation. said More alarming is that who had never contributed to other discussions other than the Avalanche proposal. One of the that noted this discrepancy reads: a majority of members supporting the proposals were new forum users comments “I think it’s worth calling out at this point that currently, all but one vote for this proposal came from accounts who have been in this forum for less than a day. 34/35 accounts were created in the last 24 hours. Presumably, the majority of traffic, votes and subsequent commentary on this topic are being led by a group of AVAX shills whose only interest is in bag pumping. Hard no on this one, and as a community, we should be VERY skeptical of the motivations behind this post, the commenters, or the votes that come to it.” Although Ava Labs’ proposal idea has already amassed 40 votes and is awaiting the next stage of deliberation, there is little chance, however, that it will come to fruition since there is an existing proposal campaigning that ApeCoin stays on Ethereum. The proposal, Keep ApeCoin within the Ethereum ecosystem, was published by a community member on May 4 following Yuga Labs’s recommendation to move to a dedicated layer blockchain. The proposal reads: titled “Yuga Labs stated in a tweet 6 that they believed ApeCoin needed to move to its own chain in order to scale. We the ApeCoin DAO believe that, at least for the time being, ApeCoin should remain within the Ethereum ecosystem, and not migrate elsewhere to an L1 chain or sidechain not secured by Ethereum.” Some community members have asked others to vote for and support this proposal so that Ava Labs will not succeed in pressuring the ApeCoin ecosystem to opt for Avalanche.
