My name is Angelina Tsuboi and I am a 17-year-old programmer and aerospace cybersecurity researcher currently interning for NASA. I develop a wide range of cybersecurity tools to protect aerospace systems such as satellites, drones, avionics, and pretty much anything that is in the sky. I enjoy mechatronics, coding, flying drones and planes, and astronomy, and plan to become a mechatronics engineer and an analog astronaut in the future. Interesting! What was your latest Hackernoon Top story about? My HackerNoon Top Story was a . Ever since I got into aerospace cybersecurity, one thing I always wanted to hack was the DJI Mini 2 I had laying around at home. So I decided to employ my reverse engineering skills to decipher the DJI communication protocol using a wide variety of methodologies such as bit-precise reasoning and packet dissection. research article and guide I wrote about the reverse engineering process behind DJI drones using a popular network analyzer tool called Wireshark Do you usually write on similar topics? If not, what do you usually write about? Yes, I do! I recently started an aerospace cybersecurity series where I write specifically about vulnerable aerospace systems and how they could be protected from bad actors. I usually also develop a program in conjunction with the research that I conduct to contribute to the community as much as I can. Some of my recent articles go in-depth into (open-source intelligence) and ! satellite OSINT drones Great! What is your usual writing routine like (if you have one?) I really enjoy writing because it is a meditative and almost cathartic method for me to distill and organize all the different ideas and thoughts in my brain in a way where I can educate others about topics I am deeply passionate about. I prefer an organized writing process, so I usually bring my making a brainstorming dump of ideas for topics to write about and then choose the best one. Once the idea is settled, I make a brief outline and then begin filling in the details there from the research I conducted and the relevant knowledge about the topic at hand. I do want to acknowledge that everyone’s thought processes work differently, so what may be really beneficial for me might not be constructive for other writers. Philosophically, I think the process of writing is a great means to self-discovery and aspiring writers should do what works best for them and their own style. Being a writer in tech can be a challenge. It’s not often our main role, but an addition to another one. What is the biggest challenge you have when it comes to writing? The age-old saying of “Keep it Simple Stupid“ has been a rather challenging framework for me to adhere to during my writing process. As a technical writer and STEM nerd myself, I often have to catch myself from going off on long technical tangents in my writing and using too much technical jargon. In the end, I constantly remind myself that whatever technical piece I write should keep the best interest of the reader at heart. Although that does mean cutting down on some nerdiness, it really helps in the end because it prevents the diction of the writing from being pretentious and enhances the readability of the article which all boosts the reader’s retention rate. What is the next thing you hope to achieve in your career? As of now, I am going to keep developing cybersecurity tools that focus on a wide range of aerospace systems. Some of the current projects I am working on include the file security of telescopes, vulnerabilities related to space-based APIs / web security for space organizations, and reverse engineering the CAN protocol for avionics. In conjunction with development, I am also currently interning for NASA conducting research on meteorites. I also want to pursue a career in mechatronics engineering and analog astronautics which focuses on simulating space environments on Earth. In order to develop my credibility for analog astronautics, I am working on getting certified in skydiving, scuba diving, and piloting planes all before I turn 19 years old. Wow, that’s admirable. Now, something more casual: What is your guilty pleasure of choice? Video games, energy drinks, and really long walks ;) Do you have a non-tech-related hobby? If yes, what is it? Running, gardening, astronomy, and molecular gastronomy. Anything action-packed and keeps my mental health in check, especially in the world of tech, is also totally up my alley. What can the Hacker Noon community expect to read from you next? Lots and lots of aerospace cybersecurity content! Over the past few months, I have become enamored by the field because it is such a creative intersection between two of my disparate passions: aerospace and cybersecurity. I am going to keep developing aerospace cybersecurity research and programs for a variety of aerospace and aeronautical systems and will publish it here in HackerNoon for the broader community to see! Materials such as chromium, cadmium, mercury and lead can leach into the soil contaminating the air and waterways. EPA estimates there are about 60 million tons of e-waste per year globally. This means they repair their issues, and I believe they even changed the battery, so it is like a completely new one. I was highly motivated to start my own company after I got laid off from my role of Creative Director of a startup stationary design boutique. One day, they just closed their doors and I had to figure things out. Freelancing seemed to make the most sense as I had been doing it part-time consistently for 5 years. The fact that I had built up a small client base without purposefully trying to seemed like a good validation for me, so I gave it a try. I designed a logo and built a website. The first website wasn’t perfect (not even close) but it did look pretty good. I started getting more leads which I was able to turn into sales steadily. I was only 25 at the time, but I was very comfortable talking with new clients as I had been a manager pretty much since I was 20. Clients would tell me that they were impressed with the way I carried myself and that I came off as a manager, not just a freelancer. I started to realize that this was a rare quality and tried to leverage my people skills whenever possible. If I could start over, knowing what I know now, I would network more. I could have been more fearless of other people’s opinions. What did your startup look like? RJS 1.0 was literally me and my iMac in my home office designing logos and collateral for events and small businesses I was freelancing for. I would share my work on Facebook, Twitter, and Blogger (old school) and making the most of every opportunity. It wasn’t as common to run your own business back then or even market yourself on social, so It took about a year for people to think of hiring or recommending me for work. I was persistent and consistent in building and sharing about my company and eventually more referrals and work started coming in. As the days passed, our branding momentum grew which also led to new projects. (These days taught me the power of branding) I also started acquiring contract work with various agencies. One of them, , a design boutique on the Upper West Side, where I created luxury stationery for fashion designers and brands. Handling brands were right up my alley as I had prepped packaging for names like Calvin Klein, Starwars, Rugrats, Halo, and fragrances for stars like Celine Dion in the prepress days. It’s interesting how one skill and work experience leads into another. Dempsey & Carroll How have you grown your company? Over the years, we tried all traditional forms of marketing from cold calls and emails to social media marketing and direct mailers. Each effort brought in new sales. Some worked more than others. But we learned that our content-first strategy was the key to our success. Our focus was always on showing the quality of our services and we tried to position proven results accordingly. We understood that most new customers didn’t want to just give us a try and gamble with their marketing dollars. Just like anything else, they wanted to see recommendations and good reviews before they tried us out. So we used that knowledge to our advantage. Tip: It will boost sales for any company with the same core values. What are your goals for the future? Our next goals are to be named on the Inc. or Forbes’ lists, speak at or do a and release some training courses to teach best practices of design and branding. The talks and awards are a bit tricky as they are typically awarded to larger agencies, but the studio’s good reputation (as well as my own) has been growing steadily, so I believe some of our upcoming projects will get the exposure we need for more opportunities like this to come our way. If you had to start over, what would you do differently? If I could start over, knowing what I know now, I would network more. I could have been more fearless of other people’s opinions. I thought they would look down on a 25-year-old running a startup who is trying to break into the industry. But surprisingly enough, the more I talked to new people, the more I realized that so many were supportive. Some even cheering me on since I was young. I would also have explored joining competitions to win money, pitching to investors, or searching out a mentor. Entrepreneurship is a big conversation these days so there are many juried competitions where you can win funding or grants for your business. is a state-wide business competition one in New Jersey and of course, there is ! As we see show by show, the right investors can change the path of a company. I didn’t understand this for my startup days, but hopefully, young founders will read this interview and watch these shows so they ponder these options. Even teenagers can start something and build a business if they are dedicated. One last reflection is finding a mentor. Having a mentor or coach in your career can feed your life experiences through their stories and advice. You don’t have to take all of the time to learn it on your own; you learn through them. Also as trust is built in the relationship, you can turn to them for advice in cross-road-situations so they can offer feedback in those critical moments of business and development. Two years after I founded my studio, I started collaborating with musicians and other artists on self-promotion projects and exhibiting my artwork. Many of the collaborations pulled in new work from the collaborators on the other side. I guess they could see my process first hand and they liked the end result. Art Exhibitions also opened a lot of doors for me as it and allowed me artistic license to create as I saw fit, rather then a client calling more of the shots. This in turn also led to new design work. Some new work came in purely because they were impressed that my art was touring across the US, London and Canada and I was hosting solo exhibits with big brands like Starbucks and Panera Bread Co. These two small beginnings really taught me that sometimes opportunities are just waiting for us to be passionate enough about our business to find them. What’s your advice for entrepreneurs who are just starting out? For those just starting their journey, I would say: Find out who your favorite thought leader is and read (or listen) to their books- The right ones resonate. Attend seminars, meetups, and networking events- face to face is more important than ever. Find a mentor or coach- they have a wealth of knowledge and your impact will grow in less time and effort with their insight. Always be humble. S I feel a sense of loss that I just can’t shake. The Sharing Economy has become an icon and an emblem for a business model rather than a movement. The phrase has taken on a meaning that has everyone questioning the actual altruism of technology-enabled sharing, especially when money is exchanged. omething died. Originally, — bewildered that so many misunderstood the direction and foundation necessary to make sharing sustainable. I balked at the critics What I neglected to account for is that the foundation of the Sharing Economy is backed by the wealthy, who seek to become even wealthier, thus creating a greater economic divide. One can argue that startups generate new wealth as well as returns for investors, but that’s only a sliver of the pie. Like many technocrats, Paul Graham is vocal in his belief that . This is fundamentally false — innovation would be even sexier to entrepreneurs if the majority were thriving. After all, a . economic inequality is central to the motivation of entrepreneurs and growth of new companies healthy middle class is good for business In his inaugural speech, President Obama never spoke truer words,“The nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous.” All of us need to see this — including the economically advantaged. Let’s be clear: wealth is not wrong. Money is not bad. Hard work should pay off. And we can do better than this. Are we really proud that Uber doesn’t own cars, employs zero drivers and is worth a $100 billion? Or that Airbnb has a valuation of $25 billion, without owning a single piece of real estate? It takes only a short step back to realize that these companies are absorbing the value of assets and time that other people are exchanging with each other! Leading platforms such as Airbnb and Uber are heavily venture backed, profit maximizing entities. The rich get richer on the backs of the less fortunate who are using all that they’ve worked hard for in the form of their possessions and time, such as their homes, cars, and expertise. The technology of these platforms is not expensive to build. Meanwhile, these companies have skyrocketing valuations ( exceeding even the growth trajectory of Facebook ) because they are absorbing value from the people actually creating and providing the value. And let’s not leave Facebook out of the equation. The valuation of Facebook is based on the content, networks, and personal data individuals infuse into the platform. Individuals don’t own their own social network or their data — Facebook does. And while that might seem insignificant, perhaps Jaron Lanier, author of “Who Owns the Future” gives us something to think about, “Our personal data is not unlike labor — you don’t lose by giving it away, but if you don’t get anything back you’re not receiving what you deserve. Information, he points out, is inherently valuable. .” When billions of people hand data over to just a few companies, the effect is a giant wealth transfer from the many to the few There is a way to more equally distribute wealth and transfer value. We can easily build technology to account for, assign, and distribute value as it’s created. Value distribution is coming — it’s just a matter of time. What does this have to do with the Sharing Economy? Everything. Let’s take step back to look at where the Sharing Economy has been as well as where the movement might take a sharp turn toward real sharing. The stages of the sharing economy Connection > P2P + VC > Gig > On-demand > Autonomous Can value sharing built into business? Let’s take a look at the recent past and impending future, along with the stages the Sharing Economy to see where things are as well as where they might go next. **Human connection, community, and lifestyle reign**The boom of the Sharing Economy represented trusting strangers again — a new way to interact and transact, through different forms of value and exchange opening our hearts, borders, possessions, and attitudes to make extra money, save the mortgage, afford a nicer car, have more time for art, meet new friends, or go on a vacation. All of this pointed at to the deeper context — we have enough — we can share! **Peer-to-peer economy grows through venture capital**As soon as entrepreneurs and investors caught wind of the raw potential of the Sharing Economy, capital poured into marketplaces for everything, including some obscure examples like . At this point, and became a household term. During this time, many platforms that provided social value without obvious revenue models , Grubwithus, and Loosecubes. Meanwhile, . peer-to-peer restrooms the Sharing Economy crossed the chasm ceased to exist, including Neighborgoods Couchsurfing went from filing as a non-profit to becoming a venture-backed company With the cost savings of 1099'd independent contractors — the gig economy became an efficiency model for underutilized time and resources — a way to generate economic growth with little capital, investment, or overhead. The Sharing Economy became an inexpensive way to employ low wage workers full-time, while skirting traditional employment laws, honing in on the un/underemployed. Marketplaces for cleaning, deliveries of every type, and all kinds of unimaginable services popped up. And they were all touting the revolutionary “Sharing Economy” as their moniker. Gig economy goes full force **On-demand everything eats the Sharing Economy**_This is where we are today._Ridesharing is spreading like wildfire across cities all over the world. . By subtle, but brute force, the Sharing Economy becomes conflated with “on-demand” — the idea that we should be able to summon whatever we want or need, right when we need it. With good reason, the press incessantly attacks the Sharing Economy. There is the infamous, “ ,” which explores the ways the movement contradicts itself. And then there is the question of what is the Sharing Economy? Are , , and GrubHub really part of the Sharing Economy? Today, every type of online marketplace is claiming stake, further diluting the meaning. summarizes WSJ technology columnist, Christopher Mims. Uber continues to play the media Case Against Sharing Amazon Netflix ”The only thing these companies have in common is that they are all marketplaces, though they differ widely in the amount of control they give their buyers and sellers,” **On-demand becomes autonomous** Peer-to-peer connections will become less important. We’ll have drones, self-driving vehicles, and the IoT (Internet of Things) ruling the economy — basically, robot world. People will lose their jobs unless they are already skilled and educated or can easily adapt to the quickly changing tides. This is the era when we’ll seriously contemplate reform like universal income since there will be ever decreasing needs for manual labor. This is what’s next. What’s next? Business goes through a predictable cycle: idealism, adoption, and integration — then repeats. The Sharing Economy is no different. We simply haven’t integrated sharing yet. While the Sharing Economy seems to have lost much of its original meaning, we now have a social movement that is full force, breaking down the social constructs of ownership and exchange. Today, people are thinking more about the value they already have — slowly creating a new consciousness around abundance. Our minds are starting to map the possibilities of an economy that shares the responsibility and value with its participants. That’s big! Venture capitalist, Fred Wilson recently wrote, “As more and more businesses leverage the power of networks to create economic value, there is a question of whether the network participants should share in the value they help create.” The lessons of the Sharing Economy are not lost, but they do need to be reborn into the fabric of business — we have to see that we have enough to share incentives, to give a voice to the many instead of the few, and to work toward sustainable jobs that nurture all of us. With autonomous technology on the horizon, we need to create structures for sharing value that are inclusive of all, but we must start now. Somewhere where famous galleries from around the globe can show off their collections to people who would otherwise never have an opportunity to see them. Here's a bit about our project and why we think it's such an excellent expression of what the metaverse can be. ArtMeta A Fully-Realized Digital World To create a metaverse fit to house fine art, we thought it was important to design an environment that evoked many of the art styles that would appear within it. So, we've decided to create a metaverse based on an imaginary city on an island all its own. The city itself is the brainchild of painter Jonathan Delachaux, and executed with the help of Romain Donnot — a DI specialist, and digital/visual effects artist. Its creation has been an 11-year process, during which Delachaux worked with a geologist, biologist, volcanologist, and astrologist, to ensure that all details, elements, and configuration of the island are congruent with nature. Its design is a photorealistic blend of styles drawn from world-famous art exhibitions around the world. Moving through it, you'll feel as though you're attending the Venice Biennale, Art Basel, Soho, and Documenta, all in a single place. And the city is open to all visitors. There are no locked doors, pop-up events around every corner, and indoor and outdoor exhibits everywhere you look. But this is far more than just a metaverse. It's a comprehensive platform designed to give artists and galleries the tools they need to participate in the thriving NFT market. And through those tools, we aim to unite the world of fine art with the crypto world, creating a viable digital economy to support them in perpetuity.
