ANTENNA DESIGN AND TRAINING DATA GENERATION A. Antenna Design For GEO missions, efficient antenna design is crucial due to substantial free space losses and stringent constraints on permissible losses. To address these challenges, we have developed an open-ended waveguide antenna as the unit cell antenna for this scenario, as explained in [8]. This antenna design offers significantly lower losses than alternative solutions like patch antennas or dielectric-based antennas. The antenna consists of three main components: the open-ended waveguide itself, the groove polarizer responsible for circular polarization, and the rectangular-to-circular transition for connecting to the distribution network. Simulation results, confirm that the antenna meets the requirements. It radiates within the required frequency band, emitting Left-Hand Circular Polarized (LHCP) waves with minimal cross-polarization. This is evident from the S11 parameter, below -10 dB, and the axial ratio measuring less than 3 dB within the intended frequency range [8] We consider the coverage area over the Earth’s surface to determine the number of elements required for the array antenna. In the context of Very High Throughput satellite missions, where small areas need to be covered to avoid channel link saturation, we set a minimum beam diameter of 260 km or a coverage area Ac = 53093 km2 when the satellite is at nadir. It’s worth noting that the coverage area can be adjusted based on specific beam requirements We then calculate the 3 dB antenna beamwidth θ−3dB required to illuminate this area. Using geometric relations and the satellite’s location, we estimate θ−3dB, which in this case is found to be 0.41◦ . However, this number of elements is impractical regarding space, cost, and power requirements, as each element requires an RF chain. To address this, subarrays are introduced. The number of subarray elements is determined to avoid grating lobes intersecting the antenna’s Field of View (FoV) over the Earth’s surface resulting in an element spacing of d = 3.5λ0. With this spacing, subarrays of 4×4 elements are employed, resulting in 36×36 RF chains B. Training Data Generation The approach chosen in this study is array thinning, which consists of selectively activating and deactivating elements to form the desired antenna beam, as illustrated in Figure 1. Array thinning allows precise control of the beamwidth, uniform power distribution among the elements in multi-beam scenarios and orientation of the radiation pattern in the desired direction by progressive phase shifting. To create the training data for this antenna array, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) was employed. The goal of the GA was to find the optimal set of active antenna elements while respecting specific constraints, such as beamwidth, SLL and EIRP. The GA optimization process iteratively refines the antenna element configurations, starting from an initial configuration and continuing until convergence or until a predefined maximum iteration limit is reached. It considers several performance parameters simultaneously, such as beamwidth, SLL and EIRP, making it particularly suitable for optimizing complex antenna systems such as the distributed reflector antenna. The resulting training dataset consists of 174,203 samples, each representing different antenna element configurations that meet the defined constraints. This dataset serves as a reference for evaluating antenna performance and training machine learning models in the later sections of this paper. The main purpose of this database is to establish correlations between beamforming array weights and critical system parameters, including beamwidth, SLL, and EIRP. This is a revelation of how regenerative medicine, which you might have thought belonged to the fictitious world of Sci-fi, could be the savior of many lives like hers now and in the future. I’m talking about “3D Bioprinting”. The Back Story The number of humans with failing organs on the waiting list for organ transplants is overwhelming for the medical field. Organdonor.gov states that in the U.S. alone, over 103 thousand men, women, and children are on the national transplant waiting list. Every 10 minutes, one person is added to the list and 17 people die each day waiting for an organ transplant. In 2023, out of 88,551 awaiting kidney donors, only about 24% received transplants. That is in the U.S. alone, we can only try to imagine what the numbers could be in other parts of the world.. Or can we even imagine the reality in third-world countries with no structured organ donation system? Dr. Jennifer Lewis, a professor at Harvard University's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, in an interview with CNN, has an insight into the problem. In her statement, she mentioned that on a yearly average, there are only around 6,000 living donors open to offering their organs and about 8,000 deceased donors who could each provide approximately 3.5 organs. Dead donors are people who die from catastrophic health events or accidents, making some of their organs salvageable before they completely stop living. However, because of such events, their organs may not be of high quality for a donation or they may not even be on the organ donor list or it may be hard to find a good match. For living donors, there is a scare as to what their life is worth, if it is the right choice to make if they are willing to let go and embrace the possible complications that may arise from donating their organs and the surgery involved - especially if the patient is not related to them. There is a two-step delirium that raises the most fear for a patient clinging onto the last thread of hope. First, finding a donor match, then hoping the patient's body doesn't reject the donated organ. And from all the premises stated above, this is a tough call. A wait list could just as well be a death row. What if it could be different? What if organs could be printed from biodata, materials, and cells of a patient instead of waiting for months to years to find a donor that would match? What if regenerative medicine is the solution staring into our eyes? A handful of medical conditions would meet their end if this could happen. Ordering a newly generated body part from the cells of the patient to replace the old one could easily be more effective and faster than organ donations. This brings us to the 3D organ bioprinting. What is 3D Bioprinting? The idea of 3D bioprinting is like that of conventional 3D printing. However, it is premised on the use of organ regenerative actions which involve the manufacturing and development of organs, tissues, and body parts such as the liver, skin, heart, eyes, bones, etc. While conventional 3D printers use computer files to extrude and create objects with complex structures, 3D bioprinters make use of bioinks containing living viable cells, biomaterials, and biomolecules to create bioartificial organs of a human. This works by assembling layer-by-layer multiple cell types, biomaterials and molecules, and other growth factors that would be a replica of the natural prototypes. In this case, it is beyond just mere perception that creating a new component for a body by using its cells is much more reliable than taking a component with a completely different cell structure from another body to replace a component in a body. This way, a patient, on-demand, can have personalized replacement body parts with a very low possibility of their body rejecting the new parts. This technology is driven by the need to find the accurate organ and tissue types that would be a match for patients who need organ replacement and is opening new avenues for future organ transplantation programs. How Does 3D Bioprinting Work? For bioprinting, every procedure starts with the biological cells of the person involved and applies the concepts of biomimetics and biomimicry. This simply means using a patient's cells to grow the needed organ. Biotechicians choose cells based on their physiology and functions. They consider the cells’ differentiation and proliferation by paying attention to features such as the cell type, size, and shape These different types of cells are rendered into a printable bioink, which involves mixing them up in materials like alginate or gelatin; before they are loaded into a nozzle. To continue, each cell is placed, layer by layer, in precise locations to form a cellular attachment and build a complex tissue that would develop the organ. For the cell's culture to grow, it is transferred to a scaffold where blood vessels are integrated into the tissue and the setup is connected to a pump that would deliver the right amount of oxygen and nutrients to keep it alive. With time, the tissue will begin to develop on its own, forming an organ that will increase both in maturity and function. This is a phase of 3D tissue engineering and although this is dramatically simplified, the process requires more technicalities only applicable to experts in the biotech field and could evolve with time. From the looks of things, 3D bioprinting is already here for good. Cases of 3D Bioprinting It is no longer a myth or a fictional idea; this regenerative medicine technology has become a reality. In this decade, research institutes, researchers, and doctors have dedicated time and resources, working actively on experimenting with organ bioprinting—some are already recording success. The Problems and Ethical Considerations Surrounding the Creation of Bioprinted Body Parts and Organs As much as this concept looks like a lifesaver for many hopeless medical cases in the world today, there are still some problems this could pose. The bioprinting of organs is based on individual medical care rather than a basic universal treatment plan like that of organ donation. There is an assumption that due to its personalized medicine status, the cost of this service may just be more expensive than a public treatment plan would be, and this could prevent financially unstable people from getting access to this service. Is it safe? We can't say for sure. The 3D printing of organs and parts of the body using bioink is not considered neutrally ethical and even if it is generated from the patient's cell, there are still problematic aspects in terms of cell reprogramming, differentiation, proliferation, and of course mutation which may usher in the much-dreaded apocalypse. There is the risk of tumorigenicity, which is the property of a cell to form tumors when inoculated. While bioprinting is considered an incoming savior of the sick and deprived, this technology cannot be rushed. The efficacy of its procedures has to be tried and tested severally before it can be rolled out as clinically applicable. If this is not done, it can lead to several deaths that may be beyond control. There are also additional ethical and legal concerns related to patients' genetic information collection, which also include the storage and use of these cells. Advantages of Bioprinting and Designer Bodies Every technology has a downside, but it so happens that compared to the downsides of this technology, if it is put through all processes of long years of research and experiment with a high success rate, 3D organ bioprinting could nearly nullify the cause of concern. There are issues the bioprinting of organs and body parts would solve: The endless waiting list that could spell ‘doomsday is awaiting’. The torture that comes with getting a transplant; only for the patient's antigens to reject the organ. The need for immunosuppression to prevent organ rejection, which leaves patients at higher risk of infection. The risk of a living donor (even though willing) experiencing some possible complications that could arise during surgery. Body parts manufactured through bioprinting can be enhanced to improve performance. Bones can be made stronger and more flexible, the brain can be made smart and alert, the lungs can be made to increase oxygen efficiency in the blood, etc. In terms of cost, while critics claim that the price of bioprinted parts would be expensive, the fact remains that compared to waiting years for an organ to finally get to a patient who is at risk of losing their life any moment, this is fair. Most times these donated organs come at a very high cost (although sometimes illegal) because of the demand. However, the price of a bioprinted organ could reduce considerably when they clinically pass trials and patients wouldn't have to wait for several months, to a couple of years to get them. How close are we to the future? Brain, kidneys, muscles, skins, livers, pancreas, and so much more are in the laboratory phase of 3D experimentation. In the next 5 to 10 years, there is a high expectation of breakthroughs in these experiments, some passing clinical trials and being fully implementable. Or maybe Justin Schuh was right after all: your passwords are “trivially recovered” from any application that stores them, and attempts to make passwords harder to leak are “all just theater.” In this sense, trying to safeguard your passwords any further than trusting a password manager was a novice fool’s errand. It was a showcase of one and a half-century of secret communications between the headquarters and Brazilian embassies and diplomatic missions abroad. All of them relied on some sort of crypto to hold the secrets. All of that crypto is now broken. the infamous Crypto AG C-52 machine If you think about a password manager, the fact that all crypto will eventually get broken isn’t scary. Let’s say it takes, on average, 15 years to break a cryptographic protocol. Just change your passwords every couple of years, and you’ll be fine. A decent password manager should upgrade its crypto every now and then so you’ll always stay ahead of the curve. The scary part is that it’s impossible to know if a protocol has been broken already. Or worse, if it was designed with an intentional, hidden vulnerability, as was the case with the Crypto AG machine. Intelligence agencies and cybercriminal organizations keep their zero-days under the radar for as long as they can. The more I saw last-gen, corporate-grade security systems leaking secret information, sometimes in catastrophically spectacular manners, the less I trusted the vault model employed by all cloud-based password managers. Until very recently, these concerns were merely theoretical. The most wary of them insisted on the use of a for critically secure communications. In fact, they put this requirement in the regulations for the transmission and storage of top-secret documents. One-Time Pad (OTP) In principle, an OTP cypher cannot be broken. It is a simple XOR operation of the plaintext (the data) and a buffer of random values of the same length as the data (the OTP key). By XOR’ing the cipher against the same key again, the plaintext is recovered. Although unbreakable from a cryptanalysis standpoint, the OTP has several inconveniences: Each OTP key can never be reused; An OTP key must be at least as long as the plaintext; The key is symmetrical and must be pre-shared between the sending and the receiving parties. For a worldwide organization, supplying every office with OTP keys is a large ongoing logistical operation. Even worse, it’s the Achilles’ heel of the whole security model! Because, for all of OTP’s crypto-awesomeness to hold true, you need logistics, both in-transit and at-rest. perfect Should Eve intercept your OTP keys while on the road to the destination? All your communications from that point on are compromised. Should Eve physically crack your safe room and steal your OTP key media? If you implement OTP keys as 1 GB chunks of random bytes that get consumed as you send information, it clearly lacks both and backward secrecy. forward In the end, the perfect crypto is a way to shift responsibility from the cybersecurity team to the physical security team. And a similar problem affects offline password managers: they trade-off availability for confidentiality, leaving you with a logistical mess to sort out. As anyone running a local copy of knows, you need to backup your vault. This backup had better be external in case your computer storage dies. You need to keep your backup up-to-date. And make sure nobody has access to it. And don’t keep them all in your house, lest they fall prey to flood and fire. And don’t upload them to Google Drive; otherwise, you’re not using an offline password manager anymore. And… KeePass Principle #2: when a user device is compromised, it’s game over One day, my boss called me. She wanted to share a PDF with ten people from the upper echelon. This information should remain in their eyes only for three days. She knew that they had incentives to share this document with their respective teams to get a head start. This sort of information should be presented in person, but covid. So, she asked me to make this PDF impossible to copy and share. — Can’t be done, I replied. My boss was an Ambassador. This is the diplomatic equivalent of a General. Ambassadors aren’t used to hearing “no” as an answer. I patiently explained that, in computer science, when you give someone read permission to a resource, you implicitly give them permission to copy and distribute. Information access rights don’t obey legal rights. Even if we somehow made it inconvenient to share the file, they could just take pictures of their screens with their phones and share them over WhatsApp. If they can see the document on the screen, so can their cameras. Justin Schuh was right. If someone gains full access to your computer (or phone), they have full access to the information that you, the user, can access through that device. He’s right, but that doesn’t excuse him for implementing such a lousy password manager on Chrome. For a password manager, it means that protecting the user's device is always critical. If the server leaks, the attackers still need to go through the challenge of cracking the vaults. But if a hacker gains complete ownership over the computer running the password manager client, there’s nothing stopping them from stealing all passwords. This happens quite often in the crypto community. User Alice has a few dozen BTC, which makes her a millionaire. She has been doxxed or never hid her identity in the first place. She keeps a copy of her seed phrase in a local password manager on her desktop. “This is not a cloud password manager; I’m safe from leaks,” she thinks. Hackers find a way to make her install a backdoor to her computer. If they’re really good, they can do this without user interaction. The next morning, she wakes up to an empty wallet. For all the doom and gloom about user device compromise, there’s a silver lining: protecting our own devices, as users, is something that’s within our control. A server leak is not. The 150+ people who lost millions to the LastPass server leak bore no responsibility for the leaks or for LastPass implementing inadequate encryption standards. If user device compromise is a catastrophic attack vector no matter the password manager security model, and if we, as users, must protect our devices anyway, wouldn’t it be nice if this were attack vector? Thus, we heartily welcome a recent big reveal at Ben Horowitz’s blog, “ ,” that a16z has desired to engage politically, seriously, to conduct a savvy “revenge of the nerds” political crusade to make the pro-techno worldview stick: Politics and the Future “We believe that advancing technology is critical for humanity’s future, so we will, for the first time, get involved with politics by supporting candidates who align with our vision and values specifically for technology. “While “Big Tech” is well represented in Washington D.C., their interests are often at odds with a positive technological future as they are more interested in regulatory capture and preserving their monopolies. As a result, technology startups need a voice. “We are non-partisan, one issue voters: If a candidate supports an optimistic technology-enabled future, we are for them. If they want to choke off important technologies, we are against them.” Badly needed! Politicians have mostly taken their eye off the ball and turned Congress mostly into a slapstick pie-fight over mostly trivial matters. Consider the daily political news. Much of it covers the struggle between the Democrats (the Donks) and the GOP (Pachyderms, thank you, Thomas Nast!). And, implicit therein, the forever war between the left and right. And much of the news now is devoted to the internecine intraparty struggles, such as within the administration, between the privileged progressives and the rank-and-file workers of the labor-and-ethnic left. Prosperity affords us agency. Poverty is a vice, not a virtue. The Soviet bloc, exponentially poorer than the capitalist running dogs of the West, experienced far worse environmental degradation than did the capitalist world. It is better that we fight over what to do with our discretionary income than scrap for subsistence. Shall we use our surplus wealth to clean up our rivers and air? Plant forests? Invent new tech? Buy more aircraft carriers? Pay down the national debt? These are much worthier fights to have than those available while struggling for survival in a condition of great scarcity. Sorry, Luddites. Few indeed wish to return to the caves. Bad policy.  Bad politics. As Churchill, on the floor of the House of Commons, , ‘The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of Socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.’ observed Misery loves company. That said, misery makes for bad policy. So, let’s accelerate our technology and, with it, our prosperity. Then… watch the Congress. Those fights will be merry indeed but much more productive than what we are now witnessing. EXPERIMENTAL TESTBED VALIDATION This section aims to substantiate two key assertions about ExPECA: its efficiency in facilitating end-to-end experiments and its ability to ensure experimental reproducibility[1]. To validate the first claim, we employ OpenRTiST [7], an open-source application that is computationally demanding, bandwidth-intensive, and latency-sensitive. OpenRTiST uses machine learning filtering to overlay various artistic styles onto video frames, creating an augmented reality experience. In this experiment, the OpenRTiST client connects to the server either at the edge, specifically the testbed servers, or in the cloud via a server located at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, through a COTS 5G system and the adv-03 node. In Figure 4, we depict the corresponding critical performance indicators such as frames per second (FPS) and round-trip time (RTT) measured using the testbed. In Figure 4a, we plot the Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of FPS, and in Figure 4a we plot the Complementary CDF (CCDF) of RTT. As we move from edge to cloud, RTT significantly increases which results in lower refresh rates and less responsive video stream. The performance is benchmarked against different video frame sizes to analyze network and compute capacity. For the second claim, we concentrate on wireless network latency, a metric inherently challenging to model due to its stochastic nature at the packet level. While latency can be influenced by factors like transmit power and channel interference, it also depends on wireless protocol settings such as modulation schemes, bandwidth, and antenna configurations. ExPECA’s isolated location minimizes variability in channel quality, mitigating potential interference. In Figure 5, we present latency measurements across different radio links over several days, demonstrating the reproducibility level in the case of COTS 5G wireless links. The close similarity between these CCDFs confirms the reproducibility of wireless latency measurements achieved through ExPECA.
