The impacts of RLHF today primarily has been centered around its use with LLMs. Initial work on RLHF for LLMs utilized user preferences from a batch of 4 options (Ziegler et al., 2019) to train a reward model across general LLM benchmarks. Group preferences were changed to pairwise preferences, and rather than general benchmarks the reward model was focused on the task of summarization (Stiennon et al., 2020; J. Wu et al., 2021). Next emerged general question-answering models (Ouyang et al., 2022) and web crawling agents (Nakano et al., 2021), primarily from scaling the initial model and human datasets. Now, RLHF is used to train general chat models across a variety of tasks (Bai et al., 2022; Schulman et al., 2022; Touvron et al., 2023) and in specific domains such as harm reduction (Glaese et al., 2022) or information accuracy (Menick et al., 2022). The development of these methods has accelerated markedly, with many variations on the methodology for integrating feedback into language models (Fernandes et al., 2023). The most popular reinforcement learning optimizer is still Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) (Schulman, Wolski, Dhariwal, Radford, & Klimov, 2017), with its many stable and scalable implementations. Recent works have been developing methods for the RL optimizer, such as the offline RL algorithm Implicit Language Q Learning (ILQL) (Snell, Kostrikov, Su, Yang, & Levine, 2022), direct preference optimization (DPO) (Rafailov et al., 2023) for utilizing preference data without a reward model, or Advantage-Leftover Lunch RL (A-LOL) (Baheti et al., 2023) which is designed to act on the entire response as a single action (which RLHF generally does). 2.2 Problem mis-specification in RLHF There is a substantial emerging literature on varieties of numerical issues, unexpected behaviors such as verbosity and evasiveness (Schulman, 2023), and potential solutions in RLHF, which can be mitigated by progress on solving objective mismatch. A prominent recent example is the behavior of the flagship Llama 2 chat model refusing to answer a request asking “How do I kill a Linux process,” conflating the computer process with the morals of killing a living creature. It has been shown that there are predictable behaviors of reward model overoptimization with PPO and best-of-N optimization techniques (Gao, Schulman, & Hilton, 2022), which can be partially mitigated by training ensemble reward models (Coste, Anwar, Kirk, & Krueger, 2023). Other issues have emerged in RLHF models that demonstrates the need for improved reward models, such as a bias towards long responses (Singhal, Goyal, Xu, & Durrett, 2023), a lack of language consistency Shen et al. (2023) (invariance over changes that maintain meaning), or a reduction of output diversity Kirk et al. (2023). A similar argument is made in A. Wei, Haghtalab, and Steinhardt (2023), where the authors argue that “competing objectives and mismatched generalization” mislead the models – we present how objective mismatch covers both of these limitations and more possible failure cases. There are also papers studying how the reward model training formulation does not align with the data collection process and downstream RL optimization, suggesting the models should model advantage estimates rather than direct value functions (Knox & Stone, 2008; Peng et al., 2023). 2.3 Evaluating LLMs trained with RLHF Core to the ideas of objective mismatch with LLMs is the methods of evaluation used to correlate performance. Historically, LLMs have been evaluated across a wide variety of tasks trying to capture specific characteristics of models, making evaluation a extremely broad process (Liang et al., 2022) where progress is saturating (Kiela, Thrush, Ethayarajh, & Singh, 2023). Now, many models are focused on hard to specify tasks such as chat, where existing benchmarks were not well correlated with performance (Zheng et al., 2023), so new chat based evaluations such as MT-Bench (Zheng et al., 2023) and AlpacaEval (Li et al., 2023) have been introduced, but substantial further work is needed. ANCIENT GREEK PAINTING. here ANCIENT GREEK PAINTING. A lecture on ancient Greek painting was lately delivered by Professor C.T. Newton, C.B., at University College, London. The lecturer began by reminding his audience of the course of lectures on Greek sculpture, from the earliest times to the Roman period, which he completed this year. The main epochs in the history of ancient sculpture had an intimate connection with the general history of the Greeks, with their intellectual, political, and social development. We could not profitably study the history of ancient sculpture except as part of the collateral study of ancient life as a whole, nor could we get a clear idea of the history of ancient sculpture without tracing out, so far as our imperfect knowledge permits, the characteristics and successive stages of ancient painting. Between these twin sister arts there had been in all times, and especially in Greek antiquity, a close sympathy and a reciprocal influence. The method in dealing with the history of Greek painting in this course would be similar to that adopted in the course on sculpture. The evidence of ancient authors as to the works and characteristics of Greek painters would be first examined, then the extant monuments which illustrate the history of this branch of art would be described. In the case of painting, the extant monuments were few and far between, but we might learn much by the careful study of the mural paintings from the buried Campanian cities, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and those found in the tombs near Rome and Etruria. The paintings on Greek vases would enable us to trace the history of what is called ceramographic art from B.C. 600 for nearly five centuries onward. After noticing the traditions preserved by Pliny and others as to the earliest painters, the lecturer passed on to the period after the Persian war. Polygnotos of Thasos was the earliest Greek painter of celebrity. He flourished B.C. 480-460. At Athens he decorated with paintings the portico called the Stoa Poikile, the Temple of the Dioscuri, the Temple of Theseus, and the Pinakotheke on the Akropolis. At Delphi he painted on the walls of the building called Lesche two celebrated pictures, the taking of Troy and the descent of Ulysses into Hades. All these were mural paintings; the subjects were partly mythical, partly historical. Thus in the Stoa Poikile were represented the taking of Troy, the battle of Theseus with the Amazons, the battle of Marathon. In the Temple of Theseus came the battle of the Lapiths and Centaurs and the battle of the Amazons again. In the other two Athenian temples he treated mythological subjects. These great public works were executed during the administration of Kimon, to whom Polygnotos stood in the same relation us Phidias did to Perikles, the successor of Kimon. The paintings in the Stoa Poikile were executed by Polygnotos gratuitously, for which service the Athenians rewarded him with the freedom of their city. His greatest and probably his earliest works were the two pictures in the Lesche at Delphi. Of these there was a very full description in Pausanias. The building called Lesche was thought to have been of elliptical form, with a colonnade on either side, separated by a wall in the middle, and to have been about 90 ft in length. The figures were probably life size. According to the list given by Pausanias, there were upward of seventy in each of the two pictures. In that representing the taking of Troy Polygnotos had brought together many incidents described in the Cyclic epics: Menelaos Agamemnon, Ulysses, Nestor, Neoptolemos, Antenor, Helen, Andromache, Kassandra, and many other figures, with which the Homeric poems have made us familiar, all appeared united in one skillful composition, arranged in groups. The other picture, the descent of Ulysses into Hades to interrogate Teiresias, might be called a pictorial epic of Hades. On one side was the entrance, indicated by Charon's boat crossing: the Acheron, and the evocation of Teiresias by Ulysses, besides the punishment of Tityos and other wicked men; on the other side were Tantalos and Sisyphos. Between these scenes, on the flanks, were various groups of heroes and heroines from the Trojan and other legends. From the remarks of ancient critics, it might be inferred that the genius of Polygnotos, like that of Giotto, was far in advance of his technical skill. Aristotle called him the most ethical of painters, and recommended the young artist to study his works in preference to those of his contemporary Pauson, who was ignobly realistic, or those of Zeuxis, who had great technical merit, but was deficient in spiritual conception. Web3 is a buzzword. Many, such as Gary Vaynerchuck, compare it to the , with similar rewards for those who gain quick entry (Vaynerchuck is a legendary Web2 marketing guru). birth of the internet But like all buzzwords, fads, and trends, the majority of the population has no deep or meaningful idea as to what it really entails. To understand what is happening with Web3 and the wider global economy, we need to investigate Web2. And we also need to look at some of the underlying philosophical principles underlying the world of commerce. Moving Beyond Web2 Web2 relates to large centralized companies; chiefly Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon. But it further refers to any centralized online platform such as UpWork, Twitter, LinkedIn, Uber, Airbnb, etc., that provides a service for profit. These are companies, otherwise known as “service providers”. They provide a service in return for financial compensation. In order to make this happen, the Web2 model necessarily entails a customer-business relationship. You are given a unique account number with associated details (email, DOB, subscription level, etc). A customer service representative is on board to ensure that you are happy with the service. The issues with this Web2 model quickly became known. First, these service providers are well known for selling sensitive information. And it’s something of an open secret that Google uses the information to present you with advertisements. This goes for voice commands and keyboard input, and whether your devices are is not quite certain. listening around the clock Another issue is the shareholder model, with corporate executives able to make decisions that benefit a small number of individuals while often destroying the planet in the meantime. Social cohesion takes a back seat to investor profits in this model. The problems with these service providers are manifold and the scandals are too many to cover even in a million-word thesis. Unless you’ve been living with your head in the sand for the past 50 years, you know all about them. So let's move on to a solution that already exists, but needs increased awareness and adoption - Web3. You pay heavily for Web2 in many ways. The price for these conveniences might just be too high. Integrating Into Web3 You might be wondering how the economy is going to work without Facebook, Google, Amazon, Uber, Airbnb, UpWork, and all the rest. And the answer is that these functions will still exist but under a different model. Web3 essentially eliminates the shareholder model and also eliminates the account model. This is the single most important thing you can ever understand about Web3. You are no longer a customer with a business. You are no longer a number in a corporate spreadsheet. There are no vultures accessing your personally identifiable information for trends and patterns. Web3 is built on distributed ledgers, i.e, blockchains. Through distributed ledgers, your information is anonymous, but you can still access the service. The best description would be that it's a service, without a provider. It is supported by miners/nodes/servers, who take a micro fee from transactions but have no access to you personally. Your account cannot be closed or suspended arbitrarily. At the end of the day, Uber, Airbnb, Skyscanner, Facebook, and LinkedIn - it's all just connecting people together through a software interface. It’s all automated. Software platforms built on distributed ledgers can perform this functionality without taking exorbitant fees. Aside from the obvious equality, they are far faster, cheaper, and more versatile. You also get a vote on where the organization is going through staking mechanisms and Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). By getting on board with Web3, you can have all the benefits of Web2 with none of the sides - but you need to be proactive and take time to research the ecosystem and contribute towards it. Is Corporate Commercialism Really Dead? The days of large corporations in their existing formats are indeed numbered. Distributed ledgers are changing everything. Every single large Web2 organization has many sharp, innovative, flexible, low-cost, and dynamic Web3 alternatives. And it's not just one industry: Social Media - Lens Protocol, Glimpse, LivePeer, gm.xyz, Sapiens, GetZion, Minds, etc. Banking/Defi - Compound, Nexo, Thorchain, Akropolis, Debank, etc. Real Estate/Home Rental - Lofty AI, Rentberry, Cryptobnb, Ezystayz, Trips Community, etc. Publishing And Content Creation - Mirror, Steem, Cortex Network, Deso (formerly Bitclout), Sigle, LBRY, etc. Yes, it's going to take quite some time and many of these companies are not yet ready to host a similar level of users as compared to the big tech firms. But Facebook and Instagram could be closing down their European branches due to data integrity issues.  As one Twitter user on the potential Facebook closure: commented “Meta $FB threatened to shutdown Facebook and Instagram in Europe over EU regulatory concerns related to user privacy. Imagine that… when you take away their ability to share people’s data without their permission, Meta doesn’t have a business!!” There has also been a number of high-profile individuals that have stepped down from their positions. Elon Musk has now taken control of Twitter. Along with Jack Dorsey, Jeff Bezos of Amazon has (suspiciously) stepped down in recent years. Web3 Builds On Web2 Remember that you’re not “losing” anything with Web3. Mortgages, property transfer, social media, publishing, banking, payments - all existing functionality is just going to be conducted through smart contracts on distributed ledgers. Web3 is everything you already know; just better, faster, cheaper, private, and secure. Corporations will not have to adapt or die. They will simply die; they are no longer relevant. And they will be replaced with Web3 projects where people are rewarded equitably for their contributions, not their political or financial influence.

I am a ‘late start’ female founder from Ghana after a 25+ years successful career in IT for Development, Service Delivery and Content Creation. I am fuelled by a passion for books & the immense potential of the internet and mobile phones for spreading African knowledge. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? AkooBooks Audio is a platform and experience provider focused on transforming Black/African books into engaging audiobooks that reach new audiences on mobile phones. Our library of African audio is available anytime, accessible anywhere on a wide variety of mobile devices at flexible subscription plans and low retail cost in various Ghanaian and African languages and not only in English. What is the origin story? The seeds for my business were first inspired by my mother, Nana Dadson, a children's book author and avid reader. My mother lost her vision over a decade ago and unfortunately with that her ability to read African literature independently, as only a fraction is available in digital form. Soon, AkooBooks Audio was born. Akoobooks Audio What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? We are creating a literate social environment that goes beyond equipping schools with textbooks and libraries and enabling  learners to use their knowledge appropriately and meaningfully in everyday life. Shortage of reading material for effective literacy, limited know-how and slow adoption of digital book distribution prevent efficient and effective African knowledge transfer and stunt our growth in the digital economy. With Africa recording the highest penetration of the use of mobile phones, the potential of audiobooks  and digital reading comes in. Our team has over 30 years combined experience in technology, publishing, entertainment and media. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? Mothering my teenager and planning how to open up a restaurant/cafe. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? We look at the number of titles in our catalogue and  currently run a retail per streaming download model. As a digital publishing company, subscriptions are fast becoming a a way of competing with other online entertainment models that are free. We want to move to an all you can eat streaming model. Mobile platform offers new sources to inform decision making, we share  data with publishers to help them make the right production choices for future catalogues. Our key performance indicators (KPIs) for our audiobooks include: a) Relevance- how many users start listening to an audiobook; b)Drop off rate- how many users stop listening to an audiobook c) Finish rate-how many users finish the book to the end. Also, data on preferences, Narrators, Genres and Barriers. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? We’ve won 3 business awards that  have enabled us to roll out our web based African audiobook platform which is  also available on the Google and Apple playstores. We have licensed over 300 African titles from African publishers all over the African continent. We hope to partner the Ministry of Education to bring digital books into Ghanaian classrooms. What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? Audio and AI/machine technology. Our programme promotes audio literacy and pilots it in local languages, bringing a wealth of ideas and experiences to people who are illiterate in English. We see the opportunity to skip the translation phase of books and go directly from English audio into producing ‘straight into audio’ local language versions. The new interpreted local language adaptations can then be transcribed in local languages and form the basis for new local language literature for young people. With our audio data, Akoobooks Audio is at the forefront of utilizing African voice interaction and ML technology to connect African books and authors to new readers worldwide. What drew you to get published on HackerNoon? What do you like most about our platform? I have only been following the platform for a few months and pleasantly surprised to find a good coverage of African tech content that is engaging and insightful. What advice would you give to the 21-year-old version of yourself? To be positive and believe in myself. When I encounter failure, take a step back and realize that failure is part of life and to ask myself if there are any lessons to be learned or if there are other ways around it. Being a woman in a male dominated career space like tech or publishing can be challenging, but our femininity is our greatest strength. What is something surprising you've learned this year that your contemporaries would benefit from knowing? Overseas capital is flooding the African fintech and African digital streaming subscription services market for entertainment (movies -Netflix and music -Spotify). In python, a String is a sequence of characters that may contain special characters or alphanumeric characters, for example, ". It is possible to access sub-parts of the string commonly known as a python substring. "we meet on Friday at 08:00 am You can also define substring as a sequence of characters within a string. From the previous example, python substrings can be "Friday", "at", "meet", and others. Python provides different ways and methods to generate a substring, check if a substring is present, index of a substring, and more. You can extract a substring from a string by slicing with indices that obtain your substring as follows: string[start:stop:step] - The starting index of the substring. start - The ending index of a substring. stop - A number specifying the step of the slicing. The default value is 1. step Indices can be positive or negative numbers. The positive indices start from the beginning to the end of the string and the negative indices start from the end to the beginning of a string. In this article, you will learn various operations related to substrings in . python 1. Get the first n characters from the string This example will show you how to slice the first 5 characters from the string. string = print(string[: ]) "hello world" 5 Here you define the stop index which is 5. The start index is by default is 0. Output: ‘hello’ 2.Get the middle characters from the string via python substrings This example will show you how to slice characters from index 3 to index 5 from the string. string = print(string[ : ]) "hello world" 3 5 Output: 'lo’ 3.Get the last character from the string To get the last character use the -1 index (negative index). Check the following example. string = print(string[ ]) "hacker noon" -1 Output: ‘n’ 4.Get the last n characters from the string In this example, you will slice the last 4 characters from the string. Here you use the negative index to start slicing from the end of the string. string = print(string[ :]) "hackernoon" -4 Output: ‘noon’ 5.Slice the string with steps via python substrings You can slice the string with steps after indicating start-index and stop-index. By default, the step is 1 but in the following example, the step size is 2. string = print(string[:: ]) "welcome to hackernoon" 2 Output: ‘wloet akron’ 6.Validate if a substring is present within a string Sometimes you want to check if a substring present in a string. The following example will validate if a substring ‘noon’ is in a  string. substring = string = print(substring string) "noon" "welcome to hackernoon" in If present, it will return True otherwise False. Output: True 7.Alternative way to check if the python substring is present in a string You can use the find() method to check if a substring present in a string. Let’s check the following example. substring = string = print(string.find(substring)) "zz" "hello world" If available it returns the left-most index of the substring otherwise return -1 means not available. Output: -1 This means is not present in “hello world”. “zz” 8.Get the character of a given index. You can choose to slice a specific character according to its index number. string = print(string[ ]) "hello world" 4 Output: ‘O’ 9. Create a list of substrings from a string in python You can use the method to create a list of substrings. Let’s check the following example. split() string = print(string.split()) "welcome to hackernoon platform" Output: ['welcome', 'to', 'hackernoon', 'platform'] 10.Reverse the string with negative steps To reverse the string, the step must be a negative value.
