Adobe recently announced their purchase of Figma for $20 billion US dollars, immediately causing feelings of betrayal and disgust amongst web developers worldwide. How is this betrayal? Why all the disgust? Adobe has a history of letting their own products stagnate, then eventually killing them off or abandoning them altogether. Back in 2005, Adobe acquired Macromedia, who was Adobe’s only true rival at the time. Macromedia had an innovative design software called Fireworks, which was a very versatile tool for putting together website layouts using vector graphics and was basically an early version of Figma. Fireworks integrated seamlessly with Dreamweaver, another Macromedia product for creating websites that was considered state-of-the-art at the time. Adobe decided to abandon Fireworks in 2013 to promote Photoshop and Illustrator use in designing website layouts, even though neither of those programs had key development integrations such as HTML or CSS tags. For the past decade, Adobe has had to contend with Figma, a San Francisco based startup that makes a great web design and development app, using vector graphics and allows for team collaboration online. Figma is easy to use, and can really speed up the development process by streamlining the creation of wireframes, user interfaces and visual site design. Adobe XD is basically Figma with a clunkier and somewhat awkward interface, but is used for the same purposes as Figma. One major difference is that for individual or freelance developers, Figma is free whereas Adobe XD starts at $10/month. Here is where the betrayal and disgust set in…it is clear that Adobe considers themselves to be the Microsoft of web development, swallowing up rivals and offering stale products that offer little to no innovation. Several years ago Adobe switched to a subscription based model, abandoning the ability to purchase their software at a fixed price. Certainly it won’t be long before Figma is put behind a paywall and left to slowly deteriorate like so many of Adobe’s other products over the years. Adobe makes claims that Figma is not a “direct competitor.” If that is true, then who exactly is their direct competitor? Why are software companies seemingly free from antitrust laws? How is any of this good for web developers? In their press release, : Adobe stated “With Adobe’s and Figma’s expansive product portfolio, the combined company will have a rare opportunity to power the future of work by bringing together capabilities for brainstorming, sharing, creativity and collaboration and delivering these innovations to hundreds of millions of customers.” Here is a newsflash Adobe: developers already collaborate, share and create every single day without Adobe having to step in and corner the market on “collaboration”. Like Microsoft, Adobe is essentially the opposite of open-source. Their arrogant and condescending behavior shows little to no respect or concern for actual web developers and designers. I have been in web development since the late 1990s, back when the field was called web design. Having used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and other products, I can say with certainty that their software has really not fundamentally changed or evolved over the past 25 years. Figma was an innovator, taking a “web first” approach to vector graphics, and was a better product than Adobe XD…and, they offered it for FREE. Now, I know that nothing is really “free.” Clearly Figma has been positioning themselves to be bought out for a ridiculous sum of money for quite some time, and they did it. Hooray for you, Figma. Just like so many other Silicon Valley startups, you create something innovative and exciting, and then sell out and that’s the end of the innovation. All this is to say that independent web developers need to collaborate with open source platforms as much as possible. One bright side of this predictable corporate acquisition is that hopefully this will encourage further interest in true open source design projects, such as . https://penpot.app It is much harder for developers who work on bigger teams or large corporations to switch to open source alternatives, but for freelancers and smaller groups the time has come to stop supporting Adobe or any other tech giants who continually show such contempt for the people who use their products. Adobe Photoshop APIs REST-based APIs Prerequisites Working with Photoshop APIs requires two main things. First, you need to sign up and get your credentials. You will first be asked to create a project. You can rename the generated project to something more sensible if you wish. After successfully creating the project, your browser will download a file, , that contains a public certificate and private key. You'll also be shown a screen with your client ID: config.zip In order to work with the API however, we’ll need a bit more. Clicking the “Console” button in the upper right corner of the page will take you to the Adobe Developer console. Find your newly created project there and click on Credentials in the left-hand nav. On this page, you’ll find your client id, client secret, technical account id, technical account email, and organization ID. All of these values are needed and will be used in our code in a bit, so keep them handy. Note that the developer console lets you generate an access token that’s valid for 24 hours. While that’s acceptable for quick testing, the demo we’ll build in this post will be able to generate the token dynamically. Now that you have credentials, you need to figure out where you store both your input and outputs. Include Link Here’s the final configured trigger for our workflow: To recap, at this point, we’ve configured the workflow to fire automatically as soon as a file is added to a particular folder in our Dropbox account. Step Two — Get an Upload URL When the Photoshop API runs, it expects at minimum two things — an input URL and an output URL. Basically, where to read its input and where to store the result. Our input is going to be the new file added to Dropbox. Our output is going to be the location of the image corrected by Lightroom. To support this, we need to ask Dropbox to generate a special URL that can be used to store data. Pipedream has a lot of Dropbox actions built-in but unfortunately, does not have this particular one. Fortunately, Pipedream does let you create a step with custom code where it’s already handled the authentication for you. Remember that in the trigger, we specified an existing Dropbox account. Because we did this, we can then write code and let Pipedream handle authentication. By consulting the , we find the endpoint which is exactly what we need. The next code step generated a link for us to upload the final result. We then got an access token. We’ve got everything needed to start the process. Once again, we’ll add a Node.js step to our workflow. Step Five — Do Nothing Ok, not exactly , but here’s an interesting question. This entire workflow runs automatically with no human interaction. The previous step kicks off a process that, when done, will save the result to Dropbox. Do we need to do anything else? Not really. nothing It’s absolutely possible the API may fail for some reason. It’s possible something else could go wrong as well. It’s also possible we may want to alert someone about the change, perhaps via email. Honestly, it’s up to you. In our sample workflow, we decided to simply check the job and wait for it to finish. Here’s that code step, and it’s pretty similar to our previous blog post. Freemium model has a structural benefit for both the participating sides. App provider can get insights from the potential paying customer, while the customer can use the product without committing to pay for it. The term freemium was first coined by Jarid Lukin at the suggestion of Fred Wilson in 2006. Since then, it turned out to be an effective way to acquire customers for subscription business. There are many reasons why freemium model works. But its effectiveness comes from the psychological effect it creates. This psychological effect is called Reciprocation. What is Reciprocation Effect? If a person receives a gift or a favor from another person, he or she feels indebted to the person. The feeling of indebtedness makes them more likely to repay the favor at a future instance. The effect is simple and ubiquitous. The following phrases represent how this effect ingrains in everyday lives: Treat others as you want to be treated Give something to get something Always pay your debts back Reciprocation effect is much deeply ingrained into the human psyche than often realized. We often develop Judgmental heuristics (mental shortcuts) to navigate our everyday life without thinking. These heuristics increase the speed and efficiency of our decision-making process. Reciprocation effect is one such shortcut. It defines and develops from social interactions we face, norms we follow and moral code we adhere to. For example, in almost all cultures it is frowned upon if one does not return a favor/gift that he/she received. Trade outside extended families is unique to humans. no other species trades outside their extended families. Reciprocation helped initiate this phenomenon. It created a trust between families that would have otherwise never traded. The first move for this trading phenomenon was a mere gesture rather than a transaction. Trust that came out of reciprocation resulted in a catalytic trade that changed the route of sapien life. Example of Reciprocation Effect in Action used to ask for donations in public places with a lot of foot traffic.
