The Rise of Gen Z and the Sneaker Craze - Shoes on the Blockchain The global sneaker industry is set to grow to a value of 120$ billion by 2026 from a current market capitalization of $79 billion. The shoe business is an enormous opportunity given its rapid expansion across cultures and continents. However, with more companies targeting the already flooding sneaker market, the sneaker giants such as Nike and Adidas are eyeing the tokenization of sneakers as the next play, which will create a new digital market for sneakers altogether. For example, when a customer purchases a genuine pair of shoes, a digital version of the shoe may be created, connected to the customer, and given a cryptographic token, the digital shoe and cryptographic token being a crypto sneaker as a whole. Last year, collectors and sneakers enthusiasts bought and resold $6 billion of sneakers, including limited-edition pairs on the secondary market. As previously mentioned, the material can be very forgiving. Using this to their advantage, Adidas has implemented a system where the material can be reused at the end of its lifetime. This way, the poly fibres only have to be made once and can be reused multiple times over, allowing them to cut their carbon emissions exponentially. Adidas eco-innovation program leader that using renewable resources is a crucial step towards achieving a global circular economy where waste is eliminated and natural systems are returned. He believes a circular economy is not only good for business but also a critical aspect in restoring environmental health. Dharan Kirupanantham has explained The Construction Experimenting with new ways to make the shoe, Adidas was looking for a way to glue together the many components of the shoe while maintaining a uniform material. They found that the recycled plastic material can be fused using heat and pressure, creating a stronger bond than any of their other products. This advantage could mean that the FutureCraft Loop is their most durable shoe yet. The Futurecraft Loop uses Adidas’ signature boost sole that has been adapted to fit their sustainability standards. Extra support is added to the parts of the shoe that face more wear, such as the heel and toe. Adidas is only set to release this shoe in white to exclude the environmentally taxing dying process. Although, it is unlikely that this sneaker will be able to maintain its pearly white colour, especially after being repeatedly recycled. The poly material the shoes will be made of, tends to yellow over time. To prevent this, Adidas has hinted at the possibility of colourways as a way to age the shoe gracefully through recycling. Adidas has not released any specific information on how they plan to organize their buy/return system. They are considering something comparable to a subscription service, where you pay a monthly fee, or even return a portion of your money when you recycle your shoe. Either way, they expect to have an incentive for returning your shoes to ensure they can continue their circular business model rather than having the sneakers end up in landfills. What’s next for the FutureCraft Loop? Their new innovative manufacturing techniques that allow none of their shoes to end up in landfills, is a game-changer for athletic wear. The choice used to be between sustainable materials and manmade materials like polyester, with the latter being the economical choice. However, Adidas has since paved the way for a third option – to make polyester and other manmade fibres sustainable. Adidas hopes to utilize these new techniques in their other products beyond shoes. The two brands have reimagined the possibilities of sustainable footwear by creating a product that has the least amount of impact on the planet possible. Per pair, the Futurecraft.Footprint measures out at which makes it the sneaker with the lowest carbon footprint in comparison to any performance runner ever. 2.94kg CO2e When speaking about the collaboration between the two brands, Jad Finck, Allbirds Vice President of Innovation and Sustainability, claims the industry is “focused on the wrong race.” While many companies focus on brand to brand competitiveness, the true focus should be on earth. Furthering his statement, Finck recognized that “the status quo isn’t doing enough to help the planet. Let’s take this race and make it a race to the lowest carbon shoe possible.” Let’s Talk Carbon You can’t have a conversation about sustainability without hearing the word “carbon”.  So ? Carbon emissions fall under the category of greenhouse gases which are a leading cause of global warming and climate change. The fashion industry accounts for about of global carbon emissions. what exactly does it mean 10% Thankfully, as the conversation around the need for sustainable change in the world of fashion grows, many brands are taking necessary strides in order to reduce their carbon footprint. Adidas, Allbirds and the Futurecraft.Footprint are leading the way for the sneaker industry. Image via wired The Collaboration While the two brands are competitors, they both represent different areas of the market. Adidas are experts in high-performance running shoes, whereas Allbirds puts focus on creating eco-friendly products. Initial plans were for Allbirds to bring their natural materials to Adidas product construction but Sam Handy, Vice President of Design for Adidas Running, made clear that in the end the collaboration is a true blend of both brands. Handy explained, “In practice, it became collaborative with both sides reworking, bouncing sketches … We had the Allbirds team drawing on performance aspects and Adidas working on materials. It became much more collaborative than we anticipated in the beginning.” The brands started by assessing the already sustainable-minded Adidas performance running shoe, the Adizero RC3, looking at its materials, life cycle and pre-existing carbon footprint. While yes, the RC3’s carbon footprint was lower than the average running shoe, it still measured at per pair. By analyzing the brand’s previous take on an eco-minded runner, they were able to recognize what needed to be improved. 7.6 kg CO2 Self-developed Materials The material of the shoe is what drives the high carbon emissions. For the Futurecraft.Footprint, both the Adidas and the Allbird teams developed completely new concepts and materials to ensure they would meet their desired goal of producing a shoe with the least amount of impact on the planet possible. Two textiles were created for the upper portion of the sneaker. This fabric is made up of Adidas Prime Green recycled polyester and Allbirds’ natural Tencel derived from wood pulp. The midsole uses Adidas Lightstrike mixed with Allbirds’ sugarcane-based SweetFoam. The combined expertise from both brands, allowed for the creations of a lightweight textile with a reduced carbon impact  that doesn’t lose out on performance abilities 70% 30% Gif via https://blabhkm.com/ The Process The reworking fabrication process is just as important as updating the materials, as the shoemaking process itself represents a large portion of the sneaker industry’s carbon footprint. Typically sneakers would use a one-piece upper which often leaves waste. This waste counts against the carbon footprint. For the Futurecraft.Footprint, the production team created a style where the extra fabric would be embroidered onto the shoe, which in the end strengthens the upper of the shoe for running while also eliminating waste. The rubber used for the shoe was designed to be void of any carbon-rising additives. Every aspect from material to production was designed to reduce carbon and create as little waste as possible. It’s More Than Just The Shoe Adidas and Allbirds didn’t stop with just the shoe. The companies reformed multiple aspects in order to lower their own carbon footprint – shoe aside. They also updated the . packaging The shoeboxes were redesigned to reduce weight and fit more shoes in a single carton to lower the amount of fuel needed for shipping. The fuel itself used in ocean shipping is made from recycled cooking oil. Renewable energy was created by making the sneakers, this energy was used to power the factories Adidas and Allbirds partnered with. This collaboration is so much more than just the shoe, the two brands are doing what they can to challenge the ongoing climate crisis, even in the smallest ways possible. Finck celebrated the project’s success by saying “We are incredibly excited about it. It was a moon shot to begin with. Hopefully, it inspires both companies to keep going faster.” The Futurecraft.Footprint started with a 100-pair launch in May to be followed by a 10,000-pair release coming in fall. The two brands are optimistic for a wider release in Spring 2022.

Fashion is one of the pillars of self-expression, and we don’t see why it should be different in the metaverse. Fashion brands entering the metaverse: In 2021, Adidas launched its own NFT drop in partnership with NFT giants such as Punks Comic and Bored Ape Yacht Club. Additionally, in December of last year, the sportwear titan introduced its NFT items. The NFT drop provided its customers with virtual wearables for the blockchain-based game environment The Sandbox. The company partnered with Italian luxury fashion behemoth Prada in January 2022, and together they unveiled a Polygon-based NFT initiative where fans can submit original ideas. We formed a team to prove that it’s possible to start from scratch and deliver a complex native app in just one weekend. Adidas organized a hackathon App concept Our concept was based around connecting fans, local fan clubs & local venues (such as bars) that host events around football matches. We wanted to build something that would give value to all user groups and at the same time bring Adidas closer to the fans. Over 160 people took part in the event. Saturday The Hackathon . Adidas revealed the challenges and gave briefing to the teams. It is important to note that we had no information about the challenge in advance. We had to start from scratch, create a concept and execute it. started at 10:00 AM on Saturday Our team was comprised of four coding ninjas: Kamen, Viktor, Daniel and myself. We also had Simeon to help out with the concept creation and the app design. we started putting together the concept for what was to be built. It included three different user roles. You can . You can check them out , and . we started creating the overall structure and building the Appzio modules that would be required for the app. the actual coding started. We coded for the rest of the day, me and Viktor staying until 1am. Daniel participated for part of the day and implemented an API to pull data about football matches.
