T-Mobile’s Accelerator and Innovation Lab is Paving the Way for 5G Adoption Across the US

Sometimes we are given a screen or PSD which have different layouts for mobile and desktop or for that matter even tablets and we need to render the layout with respect to device resolution. We know that we have been doing this from ages using media queries in CSS, but when it comes to ReactJS just hiding the element won’t do better. Because the components are still getting initialized, the lifecycle methods are getting invoked, rendering/re-rendering is not stopping and what not. Below is the example to demonstrate this, although its quite obvious but just to make a point. Example with media queries Code Link Visit the code link and check the output, we can see the text isn't displayed in non mobile resolution which is what we wanted but if we look at console we can see being printed. This is quite natural as the components will render, because media query just hides the element. Also see the below screenshot where we can see the element can be seen on the DOM and media query applied to it. ‘Component mounted’ h1 The above example is just to demonstrate the point, it wouldn’t harm us much even if the component gets called on Desktop, but in real world, the scenarios are quite complex and will cost us much. Let’s take an example of filters, where user can filter data as per the preference. Now these filters have different appearances on mobile and desktop and demand us to create a different component for each. So if we go with media queries in this situation, we can though achieve the task but the listeners, state management, rendering/re-rendering will continue to work for both components irrespective of device resolution. This can have a bad impact on the performance considering mobile is a constrained device. Available libraries to resolve this issue Yes there is definitely a solution to this problem and we do have a quite mature library for this. I highly recommend to checkout library , this library has a good user base too. react-device-detect Issue with library Although this library works just a breeze on all device resolutions in production environment but when it comes to development environment it becomes difficult to debug. The reason is, in production environment we will definitely check the feature on real devices like or but while debugging we will use browsers inbuilt tool like chrome’s So the issue is when we change the responsive layout or when we select any other device from the toolbar the changes to the respective components doesn’t happen instant. The reason is the library doesn’t listen for any changes for device resolution being changed in browser, the library is dependent on browsers navigator API and will provide the correct flag like or etc when we invoke it the first time but the moment we change the device resolution it won’t work, thats quite natural because it isn’t listening for any changes and also it isn’t the purpose of this library. Loading Components Conditionally on Mobiles, Tablets and Desktop in ReactJS

Everybody wants to access web apps from their mobile phone and that’s why developers must create their React apps in a mobile-first fashion. There are multiple problems when comes to building apps for various devices such as many display resolutions, screen orientation, and touch events. Today, I’ll show you how to handle touch events in like a pro without any NPM libraries. Obviously, libraries can make your lives easier but did you know it only takes 50 lines of code to create your own component to handle mobile swipe events? I will teach you how to do so. React As always, my articles are based on the problems I was solving in real life. Recently I decided to migrate my version of the 2048 Game to Next.js and React 18 and this inspired me to rethink some parts of the initial design. To eliminate confusion, I will only focus on handling touch events in React and show you the best practices when comes to creating React apps that support mobile devices. open-source If you are intrigued by how to build the 2048 game from scratch, you should consider enrolling to my React course on Udemy. In the end, learning should bring us joy and fulfillment and nothing is more satisfying than making a complete game from scratch. Quick intro In early 2020, I released the very first version of my 2048 game. I wrote a short article describing my decision process and why I designed my code in a different way than other open-source versions. Immediately my article went viral on Reddit and FreeCodeCamp since it completely changed the perspective on this problem. My implementation was different than others because it supported mobile devices and had awesome animations. Other open source implementations of 2048 in React were janky and incomplete. Despite my efforts, the initial version wasn’t perfect and that’s why I decided to refresh it. I updated it to React 18, changed the build process by migrating it to Next.js, and rewrote styles from LESS to classic CSS. Still, I wasn’t happy about the fact I used a lot of NPM libraries - especially libraries responsible for dealing with mobile touch events. I used a library called and it was perfect to support multi-gesture touch events in JavaScript. Unfortunately, doesn’t support React and it forced me to create my own React wrapper for this library. But I found yet another problem - the NPM library hadn’t been updated for the last 8 years and it puzzled me. is downloaded more than 1.4 million times weekly but nobody is maintaining it. hammerjs hammerjs hammerjs Technically, my project wasn’t critical so I still could take advantage of this library. I always prioritize high quality of code but usage of unmaintained library cannot be considered as good practice. That’s why I created my component from scratch. Step 8: Try to contact tech support Salespeople might be responsive before making the sale, but a company’s true colors show when a customer faces difficulties or has a request. If a vendor can provide prompt and professional technical support, it saves you a lot of time, effort, and headaches. Ideally, it’s good to have more than one way to contact support: by phone, email, live chat, or messengers. In most companies, additional communication channels come with the premium support option. Such support may include a dedicated manager, and the ability to communicate with the vendor’s team in real-time, 24/7. If this option is not available, pay attention to the response time SLA. This is the time in which the vendor commits to respond to a client’s issue. It’s usually defined by the support policy. As for cases when a client needs off-hours assistance, the vendor’s website should provide all essential instructions, guides, and FAQs. Comprehensive documentation should answer 90% of the questions, so pay attention to how thoroughly it is made, if it includes demo examples, how often it is updated, and if it’s localized to your language. Questions to ask a vendor: What’s your response time for support requests? Do you have a premium support option? Is support documentation comprehensive and easy to navigate? Step 9: Find customer references If you made it through the steps above, you can confidently trust the results. Still, it’s always a good idea to look for additional social proof from companies that have already succeeded in what you’re trying to achieve. Here, we advise you to conduct your own research and find as many reviews about the vendor as possible. The first go-to source of information is the case study section on the vendor’s website. There, you can look for stories from customers from your niche and find relevant use cases. For example, if you’re a crypto platform on a quest to deploy KYC, then KYC-related cases from banks will also give you valuable insights.
