Meet the Winners of Startups in Europe

That's likely a question that you've never asked yourself, but as a manager, it's an important one. Career conversations are an important part of We’re going to define 5 levels that will make it easier for you to have a better career conversation. Through self-reflection or 360 feedback, it should be relatively easy to know where you stand. You can then set the next highest level as a tangible goal to improve. career development. Each level builds on top of the previous one. Let’s dive in. Level 0 Description: Manager never initiates any conversations with employees about their careers or development. If the employee brings up a career conversation the manager is not helpful. They’re either dismissive, unsupportive, ignorant, or don’t offer any insights. Grade: F You don’t want to be this manager! The good news is that it’s hard to be at this level. The most likely explanation is that you don’t believe in supporting your employees’ careers and development. You may believe that it’s not your job or that it’s not in the best interest of the organization. If so, I think you’re mistaken, though I would be curious to understand that point of view better. Here are some of the potential risks of not supporting them: Decreased engagement Decreased motivation Decreased innovation and creativity Lack of trust and goodwill Tips for improvement: Be prepared to answer the following questions from your employees: How do promotions work? What are the different career paths? What is my next role, and what does it take to get there? What should I be working on to progress in my career? Discuss this with your manager, HR, and peers. You want your answers to be accurate and consistent with the rest of the department. Level 1 Description: Manager doesn’t initiate conversations about careers and development. Manager is helpful when the employee initiates a career conversation. Grade: C This is better than nothing. At Level 1 you may think that you don’t have time to support their careers and that it’s their responsibility. You’re at least providing value to them. If you’re good at responding when they initiate a career conversation, you may even add a lot of value. You can do much better though. Here are some of the downsides of this level: It’s not equitable. The people that are comfortable and skilled at initiating career conversations will benefit more than those who aren’t. It’s hard to know what you don’t know. The employee can only bring up career topics and options that they’re familiar with. This could leave some valuable conversations out. The employee is making all the effort which is not as good at building trust and goodwill. If there’s little trust the employee is less likely to share their career goals. Tips for improvement: Schedule multiple times throughout the year to have career conversations. Prepare for each conversation. Make sure you understand career progressions in your department well. Anticipate common questions. Level 2 Description: Manager initiates some career conversations, usually at review time. Manager discusses the employee’s career options in the department (e.g. career ladder and/or different tracks). Manager discusses the employee’s next role, where they stand, and how to get there. Grade: B This is pretty good. You could consider this your target level or your minimum requirement. At Level 2 you're taking an active role in the career conversations. Your focus is helping employees progress their careers at your company. This is reasonable and will provide solid value to the employee. You can still do better! Here are some of the downsides of this level: The default progressions in your department may be limiting to some employees. Focusing on the next role may feel transactional and less inspiring. The focus is on the benefit to the company which is sub-optimal for building trust and goodwill. Tips for improvement: Expand the scope of your career conversations. Get curious about them as individuals and about their career goals: What are their personal goals? How much is career growth important to them? What kind of growth are they looking for right now? What are they passionate about? What do they want to learn? Expand the career options that you’re comfortable discussing beyond the next role in your department. Talk about career and growth frequently in your 1-1s. Experiment with a variety of different conversations and questions. Level 3 Description: Manager discusses the employee’s Career with a capital C. Manager takes a more holistic view of their career unconstrained by the roles available in the department, or even the company. Career conversations explore short-term and long-term goals. Conversations occur more frequently throughout the year. Employees trust the manager enough to shares their true career goals. Grade: A- This is a great target level for all managers. The big difference at this level is that for the first time we’re putting the goals of the individual on par with the goals of the company. We’ve made the transition to in the belief that the best way to serve the company is to serve the company the individual. We're proactively supporting the individual. This not only builds trust and goodwill; it also adds a lot more value to them! If they trust you, they are more likely to tell you what they really want. This gives you a much better chance to find them work they love. It’s not crazy to say that if you do this well you could have a profound effect on someone’s career, maybe even their life. servant leadership and Tips for improvement: At this level improvement becomes harder. Progressing through the earlier levels is mostly a question of taking the time to perform various actions. To progress beyond Level 3 you have to view career conversations as a and get serious about working on it. skill Read Radical Candor Three Powerful Conversations Managers Must Have to Develop Their People Three Questions Every Manager Struggles with Making Career Development Plans Different 1-1 question banks , , and here here here Practice Have career conversations often with different people and reflect. The other levels are attainable through effort and knowledge. This one is not. This level requires superb emotional intelligence, listening, and job crafting skills. You need to have a great feel for asking insightful questions. You have to know when and how to push people out of their comfort zones and when to reassure and build up their confidence. You have the humility to coach people to find their own path instead of imposing your vision. This level requires the skills and the dedication to apply them, one good career conversation at a time. This is really hard to do consistently. Which is exactly what you want for an expert level! Final thoughts These levels are not perfect They’re not going to be neat and precise, and they don’t capture all the subtleties of career conversations. You may find that you don’t fit nicely in any of them. You may reach a higher level with one employee versus another. As imperfect as they are, they can be helpful The benefit of these levels is using them for a quick self-assessment: . . What level are you at with each of your team members? What would you have to change to move up one level? If you realize that you’re not at the level you want to be, don’t be too hard on yourself. You have a lot on your plate and chances are you’ve had little to no training on career conversations. Being a better career conversationalist is a great way to add value to each of your team members. Each career conversation is an opportunity to build trust, increase engagement, and job satisfaction. If you can have them often and skillfully your team will be more likely to stay, perform at a high level, and be happy. Challenge yourself to get to the next level!

Optimizing workflows with AI has become a game-changer for me, especially when it comes to searching for information. For a while, I relied on the free version of Perplexity, but recently, I upgraded to Perplexity Pro. Meanwhile, as a longtime user of ChatGPT, I’ve also been exploring its new ChatGPT Search feature. In this article, I’ll share my experiences with both tools, compare their strengths and weaknesses, and help you decide which one might be the better fit for your needs. Perplexity I’d heard about Perplexity.ai many times, promised myself I’d try it, and eventually did, but it didn’t quite click. It’s hard to fully appreciate a tool until you use it regularly. I forgot about it until I got a test assignment for a job interview in a new field, requiring tons of research. Honestly, I’m not great at googling. But since I frequently use ChatGPT and have gotten pretty good at writing prompts, I thought of giving Perplexity another shot. This was before the release of ChatGPT Search, and at that point, I’d already maxed out what ChatGPT could offer. Perplexity turned out to be a lifesaver. It made long, tedious searches much quicker and was my first truly game-changing experience with AI search. At the time, I used the free version. Compared to browser searches, here’s what I found more convenient in AI search: Fewer distractions from ads: Most browsers put ads at the top, so you have to scroll past them just to get to the first actual search result. Even without the ads, the top links are often not very relevant, and there are still too many to sift through. This makes it easy to lose motivation to click beyond the first couple of pages. AI does all that for you, providing a list of sources you can explore further on your own.


Threaded searches with context: I loved how searches are organized into threads, preserving context. For my test assignment, since I was learning a new field from scratch, one question would lead to many others. It was convenient to continue and expand the search without starting over each time. If I remembered something later, I could easily return to a specific thread and pick up where I left off.


Helpful question suggestions: Each thread in Perplexity includes prompts for related questions, which makes navigating a new topic much easier.


Incognito mode: Like most browsers, Perplexity offers an incognito mode. I haven’t used it yet, but it’s a nice feature.


Language flexibility: If you write in a certain language, you’ll get sources in that language. This is a standard approach for browsers but not always convenient. For a while, I continued using the free version, but recently I switched to Pro. The free version uses the GPT-3.5 model, whereas the Pro plan grants access to the latest models: GPT-4 Omni, Claude-3 Sonnet/Opus, and Sonar Large 32k, so all the best features are integrated into your search. Of course, the Pro version offers better, smarter, and faster search. In addition to the features mentioned above, here’s what I found most useful: Broaden your search with images: Pro provides access to Playground V2.5, DALLE 3, and Stable Diffusion XL models that can expand your search. For example, I was recently researching fund flow modeling, and having visual examples was incredibly helpful.


Files, code, and more input options: You can upload unlimited files, code, pictures, etc. It’s really fast and much more convenient than doing this through a standard browser because it’s all in one space with seamless AI interaction. ChatGPT Search This feature was launched in October 2024 and is based on GPT-4o, specifically trained for search. It’s integrated into ChatGPT, allowing you to enable it with a Search button or simply ask ChatGPT to search the web. As I mentioned, I’ve been a long-time user of ChatGPT for several years, so I seamlessly integrated the search feature into my routine. Since free Perplexity uses GPT-3.5, all its features like AI search with no ads, no endless scrolling, and results organized into threads with helpful tips are available here as well. My favorite feature here is its accessibility, offering text-to-speech, and the ability to create queries via audio, and audio dialogs. Choose your fighter Search Quality Perplexity excels at finding information, while ChatGPT Search is better at explaining it. From a user perspective, I wouldn’t say I’ve encountered any critical issues with not finding something. It’s just a matter of different approaches. Perplexity provides more an overview of sources, whereas ChatGPT tends to give more explanation than summary. Generated Answers Without Sources Both tools provide sources for their answers, but sometimes the information might be generated without a reliable link. Even when a link is provided, the relevant information might not actually be there. It’s always better to double-check and read the sources yourself. Based on my experience, ChatGPT is more prone to generating unsupported content than Perplexity, but I’ve encountered this issue in both tools. Search Speed I didn’t notice a significant difference between the two in terms of speed. However, both are slower than a standard browser search. Chrome extensions Both tools offer Chrome extensions, and I tested both. The ChatGPT extension lets you use ChatGPT as your primary search engine, replacing, for example, Google. When you enter something in the search bar, it redirects you to ChatGPT, where your query is processed. Honestly, I wasn’t a fan. It’s slower than Google, and you can feel it. I still prefer a traditional search bar for quick lookups. Perplexity’s Chrome extension works differently. Instead of replacing your search engine, it opens a small window over the current page, allowing you to googling and query Perplexity simultaneously. I really loved this one, because it’s more useful for me. The drawback is that you can only enter one query at a time, and if you want to continue the conversation, it redirects you to a separate Perplexity tab. Unique Features Since both tools use GPT models, they share many great features. Perplexity Pro stands out with its use of multiple models and built-in illustrations. On the other hand, I really appreciate ChatGPT’s accessibility and seamless integration into its apps, which I use for more than just search. Bonus: Hangman game test I saw a funny tweet claiming ChatGPT can’t play Hangman. Turns out, neither can Perplexity Pro, even with all its models. Final Take: Which Works Best for What To start with, I’m a fan of AI search. Usually, it takes longer than quick googling, so here’s how I see it: if I need a super quick answer from the first link, I’ll use a standard browser search. But if I need to find more information or conduct deeper research, AI search is the way to go. It’s the best method to uncover valuable insights more efficiently. As for ChatGPT Search and Perplexity, in my experience, they solve different problems. ChatGPT Search perfectly extends ChatGPT’s capabilities, given that ChatGPT’s knowledge base only goes up to the year 2021. It’s perfect for studying and gaining insights using up-to-date web information. Perplexity, on the other hand, is better for finding something more thoroughly. It takes more from browser search, like incognito pages, and its approach to work with your prompts. It is about searching for information first and explaining second, in contrast to ChatGPT Search. For me: Need to find something? Perplexity.

In this article, I’ll share my experiences with both tools, compare their strengths and weaknesses, and help you decide which one might be the better fit for your needs. It’s integrated into ChatGPT , allowing you to enable it with a Search button or simply ask ChatGPT to search the web. ChatGPT As I mentioned, I’ve been a long-time user of ChatGPT for several years, so I seamlessly integrated the search feature into my routine. Since free Perplexity uses GPT-3.5, all its features like AI search with no ads, no endless scrolling, and results organized into threads with helpful tips are available here as well. My favorite feature here is its accessibility, offering text-to-speech, and the ability to create queries via audio, and audio dialogs. Choose your fighter Search Quality Search Quality Search Quality Search Quality Perplexity excels at finding information, while ChatGPT Search is better at explaining it. From a user perspective, I wouldn’t say I’ve encountered any critical issues with not finding something. It’s just a matter of different approaches. Even when a link is provided, the relevant information might not actually be there. It’s always better to double-check and read the sources yourself. Based on my experience, ChatGPT is more prone to generating unsupported content than Perplexity, but I’ve encountered this issue in both tools. Search Speed Search Speed Search Speed Search Speed I didn’t notice a significant difference between the two in terms of speed. However, both are slower than a standard browser search. The ChatGPT extension lets you use ChatGPT as your primary search engine, replacing, for example, Google. When you enter something in the search bar, it redirects you to ChatGPT, where your query is processed. Honestly, I wasn’t a fan. It’s slower than Google, and you can feel it. I still prefer a traditional search bar for quick lookups. Perplexity’s Chrome extension works differently. Instead of replacing your search engine, it opens a small window over the current page, allowing you to googling and query Perplexity simultaneously. I really loved this one, because it’s more useful for me. The drawback is that you can only enter one query at a time, and if you want to continue the conversation, it redirects you to a separate Perplexity tab. Unique Features Unique Features Unique Features Unique Features Since both tools use GPT models, they share many great features. Perplexity Pro stands out with its use of multiple models and built-in illustrations. On the other hand, I really appreciate ChatGPT’s accessibility and seamless integration into its apps, which I use for more than just search. Turns out, neither can Perplexity Pro, even with all its models. Final Take: Which Works Best for What To start with, I’m a fan of AI search. Usually, it takes longer than quick googling, so here’s how I see it: if I need a super quick answer from the first link, I’ll use a standard browser search. But if I need to find more information or conduct deeper research, AI search is the way to go. It’s the best method to uncover valuable insights more efficiently. As for ChatGPT Search and Perplexity, in my experience, they solve different problems. ChatGPT Search perfectly extends ChatGPT’s capabilities, given that ChatGPT’s knowledge base only goes up to the year 2021. It’s perfect for studying and gaining insights using up-to-date web information. Perplexity, on the other hand, is better for finding something more thoroughly. It takes more from browser search, like incognito pages, and its approach to work with your prompts. It is about searching for information first and explaining second, in contrast to ChatGPT Search. As a Product Manager, you have great ideas! Ideas that could change the way people do things, ideas that could solve the world’s most pressing problems. And all you need to do now, is go ahead and build it! Let’s build an MVP (minimum viable product), sell the hell out of it (because the idea is super-disruptive in your mind) and then iterate. Soon to realize 6–8 months down the line that your product no longer has that level of adoption that you had expected, or that you now have to pivot to cater to the needs of your ‘revised’ audience because the initial market definition was too narrow. Product Managers are nothing but entrepreneurs, trying to launch their startup, pitching a business plan to internal stakeholders (your investors), gathering resources (creating a startup team), launching and selling to customers (marketing and launching your product). Thus, as we all know the fact that more than 80% of startups fail, the path to building a successful product should mimic the approach to launching a successful company. The Lean-product approach The Lean Startup approach discoursed by Eric Ries, has popularized the ‘fail fast, iterate often’ notion. This involves evaluating the problem the customer has with a prototype and then iterating with measured data from the feedback loop, using minimum resources. A core component of lean-startup methodology is the build-measure-learn feedback loop. I take this methodology and apply it to defining, validating and iterating to achieve the right product-market fit and create a rock-solid product strategy. Problem definition Innovative ideas lead to great solutions, however, without a deep understanding of the problem space, you are at a risk of getting ahead of yourself and building capabilities which do not receive customer traction. Defining your problem statement involves understanding of the problem space, the sense of urgency to solve the problem, the existing solutions in the market that have attempted to solve the problem all in the context of your target audience. “If I were given one hour to save the planet, I would spend 59 minutes defining the problem and one minute resolving it,” Albert Einstein said. One example of the many ways of framing a problem statement is by defining: What is the problem?
Who is facing this problem?
How often?
Why do you need to solve it? In your initial level surveys or focus group interviews, these are a few statements that could be derived: “I am a salesperson, constantly on the road and am always struggling with managing and submitting tiny paper receipts for reimbursement as I keep losing them.” Using our above framework we have our problem statement e.g. “Business travelers or salespersons (who) need a way to capture and manage their travel expenses (what) because they are always on the road (how often). We need a solution to make this process less-time consuming and less-cumbersome (why).” This, by the way, is the problem as identified by DePasquale, founder of Outtask that made an online tool, Cliqbook, that allowed workers to book and manage their online travel and which in 2006, was acquired by Concur. Target Audience In the problem definition we have identified who is facing the problem you are trying to solve. This is where you identify the core audience who will be using your product. Your user as well as buyer personas. It is important to be honest about sizing your market here. This is not your $2B TAM pitch to investors. Be realistic and as specific as possible. Core Value Proposition A value-proposition is not simply a list of your benefits. It explains what benefit you provide for who and how you do it uniquely well. It should be a single statement articulating what is the value promised to the customer? There are tons of frameworks to define and state your value prop in a concise way. The simplest, perhaps is the template from Steve Blank, “We help [X] to [Y] by [Z]” Some great examples are: Dollar Shave Club*: “A Great Shave for a Few Bucks a Month”*
Stripe*: “Scale faster by building your business on Stripe’s payment processing platform.”*
Uber*: “Everyone’s private Driver”* Once you have your value prop defined, it is extremely important to continuously evaluate and test it with potential customers, even before you start building your MVP. Why is your product offering unique? This is probably the most important question you need to ask while determining the customer’s ‘willingness to pay’ for your product. Why should the customer go for your product vs the competitors? This becomes even more important when you are trying to displace a largely incumbent or crowded space such as enterprise productivity tools or online food delivery. Also, remember, you do not need to differentiate on a fancy feature or capability. Sometimes the simplest of things such as a clean design and user experience is what customers may need the most. Figuring out what matters to your customers the most and then choosing to differentiate on that aspect should be the approach. There is a reason why Zoom has completely disrupted the video conferencing market with their focus on creating virtual experiences when it comes to digitizing the workspace. The current space consisted of a stack of products, some wider and some narrower and some part of a larger ecosystem (Skype and Cisco Webex). Zoom clearly understood the need to converge video, web and mobile. Zoom’s offering that integrated audio, web conferencing and mobile integration was a simple, straightforward solution to what customers needed. Also, their willingness to work with most platforms and devices coupled with their all-inclusive fremium model was different from how all the other players went to market. Product quality, technology, user experience, price, go-to-market model and customer-service are just a handful of factors that you can think of and choose to base your differentiation upon. Metrics Ries’s lean framework follows a build, measure, learn loop. However, defining what to measure and how to evaluate the success for your product needs to be done as early as possible. You should be able to answer the question “How is the product doing?” at any point in time. And defining the response in clear KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) helps you evaluate the progress in a very objective way. The AARM method defined by Lewis Lin is a good framework to pick your metrics in each of the areas of acquisition, activation, retention and monetization. However, you need to go beyond frameworks, pick the appropriate metrics and customize them for your product and growth stage. Metrics creation and measurement is a highly iterative process and hence you constantly need to set KPI goals, evaluate and track these goals, and create new ones as your product grows. Apart from coming up with metrics for areas of acquisition, engagement and monetization, what needs to be agreed upon from an early stage is the ‘North-Star Metric’ that is going to drive most product decisions.
