What is the Current State of Gaming? The current State of Gaming is consisting of platform-exclusive games turning into multiplatform games. We’re getting DLC expansion continuations for main games such as Resident Evil: Village and its’ Winters’ Expansion. Summer Games Fest announced plenty of Space-themed games like Starfield and so on. We’re getting games similar to older games such as Capcom’s Exoprimal. NFTs are collapsing. The same is going for Crypto-themed games. Crypto itself is crashing. Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak is getting a demo and a one-year road map as of right now. Persona 3 portable, 4 Golden, and 5 Royal are all coming to everything but PS4 and Switch. What do you Like About the Current State of the Gaming Industry? Multiplayer games getting more focus is something I can appreciate and like. Depending on who you ask, Persona mainline games coming to everything but PS4 and Switch can be seen as disappointing or a good thing.  Lots of games coming to Xbox Game Pass is also something I really like such as Starfield and Persona. The game industry debuting long-awaited titles like and Neon White is very good and exciting. The number of games announced at Summer Games Fest was exciting as well. Hollow Knight Silksong What do you Dislike About the Current State of the Gaming Industry? The shift from completed games at launch to “incomplete” games that are completed via DLC is a very annoying trend.  Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is an example of a game filled with too much content, and no end in sight. It's very good, but overwhelming for new players. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint introducing NFTs which didn't last too long was a terrible leap for the industry. Play-to-Earn is a neat idea, but not well in execution. Persona coming to everything but PS4 and Switch is infuriating and baffling. Crypto-based games not doing well due to the economic bear market is harrowing and awful. What Piece of Gaming Tech do you Like the Most and Why? I love my Nintendo Switch. It's a home console that is portable. It can run 8th-Generation games like The Witcher III Wild Hunt, DOOM Eternal, and Mortal Kombat 11 to name just 3. It also streams Cloud games. What Piece of Gaming Tech do you Think is Lacking? The most lacking piece of Gaming Tech that I had the displeasure of experiencing is the PS5. It only had backward compatibility with PS4 titles. for PS3 (Stream Only) titles, PS2 Classics, and PS1 Classics, you to pay nearly $180 a year to play those extra titles! And some of them got texture issues, no less, despite operating at 60FPS!! Also, the current library of PS5 games, barring Spider-Man Miles Morales and Stray, doesn’t appeal to me too much. have Lastly, What is the Future of Gaming? Where is the Industry Headed? The “Future of Gaming” is a complicated thing. It’s tough to describe, in detail. It will, in the short-term, consist of Multiplayer games-as-a-service style games like . It will involve Crypto - as the basis for play-to-earn games - rising and falling and rising in a cycle like with what is currently going on with Bitcoin. Exoprimal The industry is headed to a point where the pioneers become pay-to-win type of developers instead of fun-based developers. That mantle of fun-and-memorable type of game developers will eventually - whether by time or force - be handed down to younger developers like Yoshiaki Koizumi. SEGA has embraced a future where fans lead popular IPs like Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, and Sonic Mania & Sonic Origins. It’ll also be a future where NFTs are ignored in favor of old practices like DLC expansions for games.

INTRODUCTION In that rude state of society, in which there is no division of labour, in which exchanges are seldom made, and in which every man provides every thing for himself, it is not necessary that any stock should be accumulated, or stored up before-hand, in order to carry on the business of the society. Every man endeavours to supply, by his own industry, his own occasional wants, as they occur. When he is hungry, he goes to the forest to hunt; when his coat is worn out, he clothes himself with the skin of the first large animal he kills: and when his hut begins to go to ruin, he repairs it, as well as he can, with the trees and the turf that are nearest it. But when the division of labour has once been thoroughly introduced, the produce of a man’s own labour can supply but a very small part of his occasional wants. The far greater part of them are supplied by the produce of other men’s labour, which he purchases with the produce, or, what is the same thing, with the price of the produce, of his own. But this purchase cannot be made till such time as the produce of his own labour has not only been completed, but sold. A stock of goods of different kinds, therefore, must be stored up somewhere, sufficient to maintain him, and to supply him with the materials and tools of his work, till such time at least as both these events can be brought about. A weaver cannot apply himself entirely to his peculiar business, unless there is before-hand stored up somewhere, either in his own possession, or in that of some other person, a stock sufficient to maintain him, and to supply him with the materials and tools of his work, till he has not only completed, but sold his web. This accumulation must evidently be previous to his applying his industry for so long a time to such a peculiar business. As the accumulation of stock must, in the nature of things, be previous to the division of labour, so labour can be more and more subdivided in proportion only as stock is previously more and more accumulated. The quantity of materials which the same number of people can work up, increases in a great proportion as labour comes to be more and more subdivided; and as the operations of each workman are gradually reduced to a greater degree of simplicity, a variety of new machines come to be invented for facilitating and abridging those operations. As the division of labour advances, therefore, in order to give constant employment to an equal number of workmen, an equal stock of provisions, and a greater stock of materials and tools than what would have been necessary in a ruder state of things, must be accumulated before-hand. But the number of workmen in every branch of business generally increases with the division of labour in that branch; or rather it is the increase of their number which enables them to class and subdivide themselves in this manner. As the accumulation of stock is previously necessary for carrying on this great improvement in the productive powers of labour, so that accumulation naturally leads to this improvement. The person who employs his stock in maintaining labour, necessarily wishes to employ it in such a manner as to produce as great a quantity of work as possible. He endeavours, therefore, both to make among his workmen the most proper distribution of employment, and to furnish them with the best machines which he can either invent or afford to purchase. His abilities, in both these respects, are generally in proportion to the extent of his stock, or to the number of people whom it can employ. The quantity of industry, therefore, not only increases in every country with the increase of the stock which employs it, but, in consequence of that increase, the same quantity of industry produces a much greater quantity of work. Such are in general the effects of the increase of stock upon industry and its productive powers. In the following book, I have endeavoured to explain the nature of stock, the effects of its accumulation into capital of different kinds, and the effects of the different employments of those capitals. This book is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, I have endeavoured to shew what are the different parts or branches into which the stock, either of an individual, or of a great society, naturally divides itself. In the second, I have endeavoured to explain the nature and operation of money, considered as a particular branch of the general stock of the society. The stock which is accumulated into a capital, may either be employed by the person to whom it belongs, or it may be lent to some other person. In the third and fourth chapters, I have endeavoured to examine the manner in which it operates in both these situations. The fifth and last chapter treats of the different effects which the different employments of capital immediately produce upon the quantity, both of national industry, and of the annual produce of land and labour. INTRODUCTION.—There is another set of qualities ascribed to the actions and conduct of mankind, distinct from their propriety or impropriety, their decency or ungracefulness, and which are the objects of a distinct species of approbation and disapprobation. These are Merit and Demerit, the qualities of deserving reward and of deserving punishment. It has already been observed, that the sentiment or affection of the heart, from which any action proceeds, and upon which its whole virtue or vice depends, may be considered under two different aspects, or in two different relations: first, in relation to the cause or object which excites it; and, secondly, in relation to the end which it proposes, or to the effect which it tends to produce: that upon the suitableness or unsuitableness, upon the proportion or disproportion, which the affection seems to bear to the cause or object which excites it, depends the propriety or impropriety, the decency or ungracefulness of the consequent action; and that upon the beneficial or hurtful effects which the affection proposes or tends to produce, depends the merit or demerit, the good or ill desert of the action to which it gives occasion. Wherein consists our sense of the propriety or impropriety of actions, has been explained in the former part of this discourse. We come now to consider, wherein consists that of their good or ill desert. Chapter I. That whatever appears to be the proper Object of Gratitude, appears to deserve Reward; and that, in the same Manner, whatever appears to be the proper Object of Resentment, appears to deserve Punishment. TO us, therefore, that action must appear to deserve reward, which appears to be the proper and approved object of that sentiment, which most immediately and directly prompts us to reward, or to do good to another. And in the same manner, that action must appear to deserve punishment, which appears to be the proper and approved object of that sentiment which most immediately and directly prompts us to punish, or to inflict evil upon another. The sentiment which most immediately and directly prompts us to reward, is gratitude; that which most immediately and directly prompts us to punish, is resentment. To us, therefore, that action must appear to deserve reward, which appears to be the proper and approved object of gratitude; as, on the other hand, that action must appear to deserve punishment, which appears to be the proper and approved object of resentment. To reward, is to recompense, to remunerate, to return good for good received. To punish, too, is to recompense, to remunerate, though in a different manner; it is to return evil for evil that has been done. There are some other passions, besides gratitude and resentment, which interest us in the happiness or misery of others; but there are none which so directly excite us as to be instruments of either. The love and esteem which grow upon acquaintance and habitual approbation, necessarily lead us to be pleased with the good fortune of the man who is the object of such agreeable emotions, and consequently to be willing to lend a hand to promote it. Our love, however, is fully satisfied, though his good fortune should be brought about without our assistance. All that this passion desires is to see him happy, without regarding who was the author of his prosperity. But gratitude is not to be satisfied in this manner. If the person to whom we owe many obligations, is made happy without our assistance, though it pleases our love, it does not content our gratitude. Till we have recompensed him, till we ourselves have been instrumental in promoting his happiness, we feel ourselves still loaded with that debt which his past services have laid upon us. The hatred and dislike, in the same manner, which grow upon the habitual disapprobation, would often lead us to take a malicious pleasure in the misfortune of the man whose conduct and character excite so painful a passion. But though dislike and hatred harden us against all sympathy, and sometimes dispose us even to rejoice at the distress of another, yet, if there is no resentment in the case, if neither we nor our friends have received any great personal provocation, these passions would not naturally lead us to wish to be instrumental in bringing it about. Though we could fear no punishment in consequence of our having had some hand in it, we would rather that it should happen by other means. To one under the dominion of violent hatred it would be agreeable, perhaps, to hear, that the person whom he abhorred and detested was killed by some accident. But if he had the least spark of justice, which, though this passion is not very favourable to virtue, he might still have, it would hurt him excessively to have been himself, even without design, the occasion of this misfortune. Much more would the very thought of voluntarily contributing to it shock him beyond all measure. He would reject with horror even the imagination of so execrable a design; and if he could imagine himself capable of such an enormity, he would begin to regard to himself in the same odious light in which he had considered the person who was the object of his dislike. But it is quite otherwise with resentment: if the person who had done us some great injury, who had murdered our father or our brother, for example, should soon afterwards die of a fever, or even be brought to the scaffold upon account of some other crime, though it might soothe our hatred, it would not fully gratify our resentment. Resentment would prompt us to desire, not only that he should be punished, but that he should be punished by our means, and upon account of that particular injury which he had done to us. Resentment cannot be fully gratified, unless the offender is not only made to grieve in his turn, but to grieve for that particular wrong which we have suffered from him. He must be made to repent and be sorry for this very action, that others, through fear of the like punishment, may be terrified from being guilty of the like offence. The natural gratification of this passion tends, of its own accord, to produce all the political ends of punishment; the correction of the criminal, and example to the public. Gratitude and resentment, therefore, are the sentiments which most immediately and directly prompt to reward and to punish. To us, therefore, he must appear to deserve reward, who appears to be the proper and approved object of gratitude; and he to deserve punishment, who appears to be that of resentment. Four months later after my ongoing adventure with blockchain Technology, I finally come across a book , an American Writer. This book I can't say(for sure) my mind; Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson blew (1) Maybe because I already knew what the content entailed before advancing to reading it,
(2) Or because I strongly believe that imagination of unknown worlds are realities unforeseen, uncreated, yet. ; One man conceived a Metaverse world in 1992 and of that world is taking shape as a reality today - That is exactly what keeps nagging at my mind. I wanted to include my experience with Snow Crash as a way to divulge into the Metaverse Term without sounding too cliche or like a sole boat joining in on the party. A Blockchain Story - My Personal Interaction with Blockchain Tech The first time I heard about Axie Infinity funnily enough was way back in April 2021, I read an article about NFTs games and how you could literally earn from them. I arrived on the Axie Infinity marketplace and I can seeing Axies priced at less than $100. It said that I needed three Axies to start playing and although I thought this was a fair deal, I didn't have the funds readily available for this, furthermore, (That was the most limiting, to just think about it right now Ugh). vaguely remember I had absolutely no idea how to transfer cash from my Mom's bank to Axie Marketplace My second attempt with the Blockchain Space was with NFTs, I had somehow learned about also in April, and since I am a huge football fan, I thought that I could have fun playing this game while earning (Uh, That was my main goal back then). If I remember correctly, it was from this exact post - on the Trust wallet Site. This got me so excited about Trust wallet and I started browsing through the various Dapps on it. I found out about the idea of minting artworks on Trustwallet Dapps like , and decided to give it a shot because I had a couple of Artworks to upload(created with Blender), I was stumped yet again with the . Getting on Splinterlands was fairly easy for me . I can't express fully how I felt when I was in the Axie Infinity world, whether through their Reddit or Discord Channels. The prices for a starter team were ridiculous and I was pained at why I couldn't take up the opportunity during April when I first found out about it when the community hadn't yet exploded which made things just super oppressive. It taught me a great truth and lesson about the crypto world - . And justifying those regrets is the best way to move forward. Axie Infinity was most difficult to get into You are always gonna have regrets What I did back then And I've done ever since when faced with crippling is to tell myself this - [Had I Known situations] (1) I couldn't predict that this would turn out like this because I'm human (2) If I had the chances in my favor (time, money, risk factor) no doubt I would have savaged this opportunity. The Axie Infinity community felt oppressive, more so because of the huge noise on how people were making millions from it - Buying houses, cars, and other shit. My plan was to get in as a scholar since I had no way of affording the huge starter fee. The scholarship route CAN be a nightmare, Gosh, It began to dawn on me and I started to feel sick at some point. The number of scholars on the waitlist, , they could even take a cut of 30 - 70(in the manager's favor) if it just means they get accepted. ready to do anything to get into Axie Infinity(not literally) After sending my information manually to several "supposed" managers, I started feeling uncomfortable with the idea of sharing my information so freely with strangers. When you go on dedicated Play2Earn communities on Reddit and Discord, you are getting filled in with huge amounts of Information. With the explosion of Axie Infinity in value, people in the space and psyched-up newcomers are aware of the life-changing, and wallet-wrecking opportunities (if I can call it that) that exist. One month in from August 2021, when my Play2Earn adventure began, I felt totally out of my mind(completely disorientated). I gather that a lot of folks felt the same way, as I did. Let me try and explain it in more verbal terms; I was feeling a lot of pressure , and furthermore, I knew they ridiculous, but here were people hyping it up and claiming the hundreds and thousands they were making from it. with the information I found online the amount of play2earn games that kept popping up was ridiculous looked I was in this space to earn money after all, and so it was hectic trying to process all that information. In fact, I was asking all these questions because I felt that I should get up to speed(ASAP) about the space being a noob and all, so I don't miss out on future opportunities; My Mind rattled with the following questions, and DID it help that I saw similar questions from other folks? Question 1 - How can I earn without Investing money?, I selfishly think that the thriving ecosystem of Play2Earn Games can be able to fend for some rewards that should be distributed rightfully to me (Pun Intended) Free Play2Earn Games Question 2 from playing and , in 2 weeks? How much realistically can I earn Splinterlands Axie Infinity Question 3 , I don't get that kind of entry Cash anywhere, what other games have an ecosystem or are currently on the rise? Ok guys alas I'm late to Axie Infinity projected to upscale My Answer to Question 1 You know what, in less than my entire four months journey with play2earn gaming, I came to realize that; If your goal is to enjoy and derive pleasure from playing blockchain games, don't even bother. Why? (1) aren't Enjoyable Majority of the Games (2) It would be difficult to find a truly enjoyable game, making it better to leave it up to chance OR give the time the industry needs to mature. That being said, it also doesn't mean there aren't games out there that can retain some user's attention, there are of course, but when I say , Nuh-uh. Addictive Games that you can lose urself in? On the other hand, if your goal is to make money by playing free-to-play games(games not requiring an initial cash investment), It's a grey area, because yeah, One game, in particular, has so far changed this status, and links are shared at the end of this post, so you can explore the Game in question. My Answer to Question 2 I saw a lot of hazy answers on this, but NONE were really suited to my unique situation. For VR and the Metaverse, we literally want all gamers (casual, pro, inclined) and even social interactive gamers(like second World) to be involved. Mobile Games is levels higher in revenue they generate over PC and console games combined Social Interactions Yeah, I think this might be the point most folks can predict or visualize the metaverse as.

As a Gamer, I can tell you that this (when implemented to its full capacity) is sick, I mean we cannot go around the fact that it's cool, can we?. super Unlike traditional Games, where we can communicate with other players usually through chatrooms or Multiplayer Chatboxes, for example as we have in Brawl Stars, Fortnight, Among US. Metaverse worlds are taking it miles further, because not only can you communicate using words, you can with body movements, A whole lot more interactions are available to us like Dancing, Waving, Playing Bowling, Racing in Virtual Cars, etc. Social Interactions in a fully developed Metaverse(whatever that looks like, but you get my point) would be totally seamless for all kinds of communications (Family, Friends, Business Partners, Conferences, Classes, Remote Schooling, Work-from-Home Companies, etc), Can you imagine if all these industries and groups of people create dedicated hubs or services inside a Metaverse like Somnium Space? That's just WOW!, The concept of Metaverse has shown us that it promises not just Games but a Decentralized world of E-business. Brief Conclusion After experiencing lots of Play2Earn Blockchain games popping up with great hype and then catching up with its real lackluster community/project, I've tried to map out exactly where I stand and what my morals should be (it's crazy but you need a guide map) and my decision has been; , thankfully a mass load of news in the Blockchain Gamefi world gets filtered out with this new model; Just keep it simple and do your thing To keep it focused on what I like and what gets me excited Concerning the Metaverse?... What Does it Take to Really Become a Metaverse Gamer?

In January 1996, Bill Gates what would go on to become one of the classic essays of the early internet. In it, he describes the very characteristics of the internet that would lay the foundation for the Creator Economy. published “One of the exciting things about the internet is that anyone with a PC and a modem can publish whatever content they create,” he writes. While Gates’s essay is remembered for its prescience about the direction the internet would take, what’s less well-remembered is that he also sounded a warning: “For the internet to thrive, content providers must be paid for their work,” he writes. “The long-term prospects are good, but I expect a lot of disappointment in the short-term.” Gates’s analysis was ahead of its time. While it’s true that the internet has made it possible for virtually anyone to publish content online, it’s also true that, a quarter of century after “Content is King” was published, earning meaningful income as a content creator has proven elusive. The lived experiences of creators tell the story: 90% of streaming royalties on Spotify go to the top 1.4% of musicians. The top 1% of all streamers earn more than half of all revenue on Twitch. 1% of podcasters claim the majority of podcast ad revenue. “To me, we’re not in a period of expansion,” one musician , speaking about earnings from streams on Spotify. “From an individual perspective of musicians, it has just been a downward trend of the rewards for our labor.” told The New York Times This isn’t inevitable, and it’s not unique to fledgling artists—it affects 99% of all creators, including famous names with millions of fans. When even struggle to make a basic living online, something is artificially holding them back. they The internet was supposed to usher in a Golden Age of media—a world of infinite abundance where anyone can create whatever they want, and everyone can find whatever they’re interested in. Subscribe The Attention Economy and the Internet’s Original Sin At the heart of the story of how the internet broke the media business model is the simple fact that the internet was not built to facilitate the flow of money. Payments weren’t built into the internet’s infrastructure—it was considered too risky. Marc Andreessen this “the original sin of the internet.” called The lack of payment infrastructure is the reason why so much of the internet is monetized via advertising. Rather than requiring users to pull out a credit card and type their information into a website, users could be monetized frictionlessly and indirectly, paying not with their money but with a different asset: their attention. That precipitated a shift in power from the old gatekeepers of media who controlled content creation and distribution—the publishers, record labels, and movie studios—to those who amassed consumer attention at scale. Ben Thompson of Stratechery has written extensively about how the platforms, which he calls “ ,” have won the battle for consumer attention and achieve outsized revenue—and outsized power—by aggregating demand. YouTube has more than 2 billion monthly active users. aggregators Facebook has almost 3 billion. Spotify has 365 million. With those mega-sized audience numbers come mega-sized ad revenues. In fact, Google and Facebook alone accounted for of the digital ad revenue generated in 2020. more than half The business model of advertising has profoundly shaped how platforms design their products. Platforms funnel traffic to content they already know will be successful in holding user attention, creating a power law in creator success. Data about user preferences and behavior is the platforms’ most valuable asset, so they close off their ecosystems and lock users into their networks to amass the largest corpus of proprietary data. The ad-based revenue model has enormous implications for content creators, as well. Creators are compelled to seek the broadest possible audiences and to create content that attracts advertisers. This business model—or lack thereof—has a profound impact on which creators can make a living and what they create (incentivizing viral, attention-grabbing, and aspirational content, while disincentivizing niche, in-depth content). The biggest impact of the web2 internet may be the creators who don’t exist and the creations that were never made because they have no viable business model. From the Attention Economy to the Ownership Economy The platform-centric, advertising-powered economy may have won the web2 era, but its victory is not inevitable or final. We’ve written before that creators’ patience with the platforms is wearing thin in a burgeoning —they are starting to question the platforms’ right to exert such outsized control over their work, their relationship with fans, and how they’re rewarded for it. legitimacy crisis Meanwhile, a new generation of technologies is emerging with the promise to change the balance of power in the creator economy. If the pre-internet/web1 era favored publishers, and the web2 era favored the platforms, the next generation of innovations—collectively known as web3—is all about tilting the scales of power and ownership back toward creators and users. There are four main ways that that will happen: By introducing digital scarcity and restoring pricing power to creators By making supporting creators an act of investment, not just altruism By introducing new programmable economic models that spread wealth across the creator landscape Most importantly, by creating pathways for creators to own not just the content they produce, but the platforms themselves Taken together, these four shifts are converging to produce a new era, one where new incentives reward new behaviors, giving the internet the opportunity to collectively hit the “reset” button and move towards a more just distribution of value. Let’s cover each in turn. 1. NFTs and the Introduction of Digital Scarcity Scarcity gets a bad rap, but it is about more than just lack of consumer choice: it’s about producer power—in this case, the ability of creators to derive meaningful income from their creations. In our current world of infinite, platform-mediated content, scarcity does not exist. On social platforms, content is endlessly commoditized—one video is more or less the same as the next video, one song is the same as the next song, and content can be easily duplicated across the internet. Scarcity is sometimes approximated by creators via memberships or digital purchases (e.g. selling e-books, albums, or content subscriptions), but the underlying content can be endlessly reproduced and replicated. That lack of scarcity leads to issues with creators’ content being illegally reproduced and distributed -- undermining attempts at direct monetization. One reason NFTs ( ) are exciting as a technology is that they give creators the ability to regain control over their own content and re-introduce scarcity dynamics that contribute to monetization. In tokenizing their work as an NFT, creators create a verifiable on-chain record of a piece of media’s ownership and provenance. non-fungible tokens The end result is a unique digital asset that traces back to the artist. Fans who are passionate about the creator’s work are willing to pay more for this canonical piece of media, enabling creators to better capture fans’ full willingness to pay. The end impact cannot be understated: content creators no longer need millions of fans to make a living, but can survive on the contributions of a . passionate few The burgeoning music NFT market showcases this effect in action. On streaming platforms,  each stream of a song contributes the same amount of revenue (approximately $0.004 per stream on Spotify), regardless of that fan’s particular intensity of affinity towards the artist. In contrast, on platforms like or , superfans are purchasing NFT music for , with creators earning what previously would have required tens of millions of plays. Brett Shear, an NFT collector who owns 45 songs from Catalog, told Time magazine: “In the same way that you buy art that you want to put in your apartment, I want to listen to this music and enjoy it—and it’s a different feeling to own it.” Catalog Sound thousands of dollars each Purchasing an NFT is akin to collecting real-world merchandise, enabling fans to feel closer to the artist and own something rare, akin to a “ .” Digital scarcity and uniqueness—which had been missing from the web2 internet—is enabled by the blockchain, leading to a new business model for creators that lessens the economic control of platforms. non-fungible super-like Excitingly, the introduction of scarcity through NFTs doesn’t mean that access to the underlying media is limited, as it would be with paywalls or paid digital downloads. The actual media underpinning NFTs can remain , available to be consumed by anyone at no cost. Those who think this undermines the scarcity of NFTs (“right-click and save”) fundamentally miss the point. public goods 2. Patronage+: Supporting Creators Becomes an Investment, Not Just an Act of Altruism In , I described that creators could tap into fans’ to monetize at higher price points. By delivering substantive value and results, creators could more effectively monetize and make a living from fewer fans: 100 True Fans self-interest This represents a move away from the traditional donation model—in which users pay to benefit the —to a model, in which users are willing to pay more for something that benefits . creator value themselves Web3 takes this idea to the next level, because all tokens are investments that not only fund the creator, but also could benefit the if the value appreciates. Jesse Walden defines “ ” as patronage with the possibility of profit, a phenomenon that is introduced through tokenized ownership. holder patronage+ That investment element was an impossibility in web2 without an on-chain record of ownership like an NFT or a (imagine trying to resell a TikTok video that was downloaded from the app). social token What’s an example of patronage+ in action? Earlier this year, Mario Gabriele of The Generalist for a group of analysts to create a deep-dive on Coinbase, as well as to commission artwork to accompany the essay. crowdfunded 20 ETH Crowdfunders received proportional stakes in the briefing and artwork, all of which were minted as NFTs. In total, the NFT sales earned 28.6 ETH, leading to a return of 43% to crowdfunders in just a few weeks. Another benefit beyond patronage and investment is membership to a like-minded group of individuals. Many successful crowdfunds and NFT sales in the crypto space have been driven by users’ desire to belong to a community, which are gated by ownership of tokens. This echoes a phenomenon I wrote about in 100 True Fans: “People are willing to pay high prices for exclusive, differentiated content and access to a network of like-minded individuals.” For fans, the possibility of profit amplifies their incentive to support a creator. Interestingly, it also introduces an entirely new segment into the creator’s orbit that had never existed before in web2: . speculators Importantly, all of these users—by virtue of becoming owners of an asset that is aligned with the creator’s success—have an incentive to help amplify the creator’s work. 3. New Programmable Economic Models A truth of the creator economy is that creation is often a collaborative act. YouTube creators star in each others’ videos. Musicians sample from and are inspired by each other’s work. A TikTok video is, more often than not, made up of the (often unseen) work of multiple creators: a soundtrack from one creator, choreography from another. Unfortunately, web2 systems are not set up to reward or track this collaborativity. In the winner-take-all world of algorithmic platforms, too often the value only flows to the creators that go viral, leaving out everyone else involved in the creation of the work. This has led to and discontent among creators who feel that their contributions go unrecognized and uncredited. strikes In web3, the promise of tokenization means that it’s possible to build in royalties such that the entire chain of attribution is able to profit from a collaborative work. Early examples of this include and ’s splits functionality, which automatically routes earnings to various Ethereum addresses that contributed to a project. Mirror Foundation Down the line, it’s conceivable that any digital work could utilize elements from a universal media library, with revenue splits and attribution automatically accounted for. Nir Kabessa wrote about the “ ,” in which ideas that get remixed and propagated on the internet could become the basis of value creation: meme economy The famous meme GIF is linked to the address of the NFT so when someone shares the original NFT in their article, they can pull the on-chain address. This is powerful for memes because it allows them to maintain attribution and context in every platform. So any action on a meme NFT is accessible, readable, and usable on almost all platforms. Every bid, swap, and transaction is added to the metadata of that specific NFT. Beyond memes, if every piece of creative work is linked to an on-chain record of its provenance, it becomes possible to trace that work across the internet and for creators to monetize subsequent use of their work. 4. DAOs and Community Ownership We’ve argued in this essay that a root cause of inequality in the creator landscape is the outsized control that platforms exert over creators and their work through the ownership of the means of production and distribution of content. The most direct way to challenge that control is to change who owns the means of production. Fortunately, there are new developments on the horizon that represent a shift in the balance of power towards creators. With key new capabilities enabled by web3—digital scarcity, patronage that doubles as investment, programmable business models, and community ownership—we are on the cusp of a new creative renaissance on the internet. I believe web3 has the potential to unlock incredible opportunities for everyone who contributes and creates on the internet: a true Golden Age of content that we’ve all been looking forward to.
