A Guide to Becoming More Confident in Job Interviews (and in Life)

There are some things that you can do to help build your confidence and make yourself more comfortable in job interviews and in life. The first step in building your confidence is identifying what confidence means to you. The next time you find yourself doubting your abilities or feeling down about yourself, take a few minutes to sit down and write out a list of all of your successes, both big and small. Remember to be kind to yourself and give yourself credit when you do something well, and forgive yourself when you make a mistake.

One of the most common pieces of advice given to jobseekers is to “be more confident.” But what does that really mean? And how can you do it? The truth is, confidence is something that you have to work on every day. It’s a muscle that you have to build up over time. However, there are some things that you can do to help build your confidence and make yourself more comfortable in job interviews — and in life.

Start by Defining What Confidence Means to You

Confidence means different things to different people. For some, it might mean speaking up more often in meetings. For others, it might mean being more assertive when communicating with customers or clients. And for others still, it might mean simply having the courage to apply for jobs that seem out of reach.


The first step in building your confidence is identifying what confidence means to you. Once you know what it is that you want to work on, you can start taking steps to make it happen.

Make a List of Your Accomplishments

One of the best ways to build your confidence is to remind yourself of all of the things that you’ve accomplished. When you’re feeling down or doubting yourself, take a few minutes to sit down and write out a list of all of your successes, both big and small. Include things like, “Got a job after months of searching,” “Nailed that presentation at work,” or “Helped a friend through a tough time.” Seeing your accomplishments in writing will help you to remember just how capable and competent you really are.

Challenge Your Negative Thoughts

Negative thoughts can be a major confidence killer. The next time you find yourself doubting your abilities or feeling down about yourself, take a moment to sit down and examine your thoughts. Are they really true? Are they helpful? Are they serving a purpose? If not, it’s time to start challenging them.


For example, let’s say you’re getting ready for a job interview and you start thinking, “I’m never going to get this job. I’m not qualified enough.” Stop and ask yourself if that’s really true. Yes, there might be other candidates who have more experience than you. But that doesn’t mean that you’re not qualified or that you don’t have a chance of getting the job.


Remember, thoughts are just thoughts. They’re not facts. Just because you think something doesn’t make it true. So the next time you find yourself doubting yourself, challenge your negative thoughts and remind yourself of all of the reasons why they’re not true.

Invest in Yourself

One of the best ways to build your confidence is to invest in yourself. This can mean taking the time to learn new skills, attending networking events, or even just reading books that inspire you. When you invest in yourself, you’re sending a message to yourself that you’re worth investing in. You’re worth your time and your energy. And that’s a powerful message indeed.

Be Kind to Yourself

Lastly, remember to be kind to yourself. We are often our own worst critics. We beat ourselves up for our mistakes and dwell on our failures. But if you want to be more confident, you have to learn to be kinder to yourself. Give yourself credit when you do something well. Forgive yourself when you make a mistake. And most importantly, learn to accept yourself — flaws and all.


Building confidence is a journey. It’s not something that you can do overnight. But if you’re willing to put in the work, it’s something that you can absolutely achieve. So don’t be afraid to take those first steps. Remember, even the smallest act of confidence can make a world of difference.

Find a Role Model or Mentor

One of the best ways to learn how to be more confident is by observing someone who already is. Find a role model or mentor who possesses the type of confidence that you admire and aspire to have. Ask them for advice and guidance. Watch how they carry themselves and interact with others. See how they handle difficult situations. Take note of the things that they do — both big and small — that make them seem so confident. And then start incorporating those things into your own life.

Fake It ’Til You Make It

If you’re having trouble mustering up the confidence to go after your dream job or take on a new challenge, fake it ’til you make it. In other words, act like you’re already the confident person that you want to be. The more you do it, the easier it will become — and eventually, it will become second nature. Before long, faking it won’t be necessary anymore because you’ll actually be that person.

Start a Confidence Journal

One of the best ways to boost your confidence is to keep track of your accomplishments. Every day, write down at least one thing that you did that made you feel proud of yourself. It could be something as simple as “Worked out for 30 minutes,” “Ate breakfast without skimping on calories,” or “Said no to a friend who wanted to borrow money.” over time, you’ll have a long list of accomplishments to look back on — and that can be a major confidence booster.

Build Your Support System

Finally, make sure you have a strong support system in place. These are the people who will believe in you, even when you don’t believe in yourself. They’re the ones who will encourage you to pursue your dreams and remind you of your worth when you’re feeling down. So surround yourself with positive, supportive people — and don’t be afraid to lean on them when you need to.


Confidence is a vital ingredient for success in any area of life. If you want to be more confident, start by challenging your negative thoughts, investing in yourself, being kind to yourself, and finding a role model or mentor. Additionally, don’t forget to fake it ’til you make it, start a confidence journal, and build a strong support system.


Being confident doesn’t happen overnight; it’s something that takes time and effort to develop. However, by taking things one step at a time, anyone can learn how to be more confident — in job interviews and in life. Start by defining what confidence means to you and find someone whom you admire who can act as a role model or mentor. If necessary, fake it ’til you make it until being confident becomes second nature. With time and practice, anyone can learn how to boost their confidence and improve their chances of success in both their professional and personal lives!
