Node.js is a Javascript runtime that can be run outside of the browser on a V8 Engine. The V8 Engine is built in C++. Its job is to convert Javascript code into machine code, giving it the same capabilities as some backend scripting languages, such as Python. Node is single threaded and non-blocking.
