There are over 3,700 articles tagged Big Data, Data Science, Data Visualization on medium, and if you would want to read them all, you would need to spend a full month reading 9 hours a day.

Time needed to read all of the TOP 150 articles that I compiled ? 16 hours :) This is 17th times less time needed then to read the whole list.

The weekend is coming, and if you want you can read all of the articles until Monday :)

It`s better to just scrape the whole medium.com website and get the whole dataset (6 million posts), then figure out what are the most interesting articles and users, so that you don`t have to spend so much time discovering possible interesting articles on this topics.

In total, i got 4,069 articles, written by 2,464 users. (around 300 are comments tagged with the tags, so the more real number is around 3,700 articles and 2,300 users)

In total, all of he articles tagged Big Data, Data Science or Data Visualization gathered 71,683 recommends. (dec 2016)

NOTE. The data is old, I have collected the data in December 2016 — January 2017.

Last year i have been to the USA for 3 months, in City of San Francisco, learning entrepreneurship at Draper University.

I started scrapping medium.com with the aim of getting myself noticed as a Data Scientist, so that i can get employed / join a startup as a Data Scientist / Growth Hacker.

I returned in Romania in January, with the plan to find a opportunity to return to the states until December 2017. And then, the Romanian government fucked my plan.

In February, the government of Romania wanted to legalize corruption and bribes. Via a FB page that i founded 2 years ago, Corruption Kills, I dedicated my time facilitating the organization of the biggest protests in the history of Romania ( around 600k persons participated) ( we used Slack a lot ) and also did some civic projects, and for the last 6 months I did not had time until now to play with the data that i got from Medium.

Anyhow, sorry for the long intro, let`s get back to the data.

Speaking of data, this is the full dump with the 4000 articles. (1 MB)

And this is the dump with the text also (18 MB CSV)

This is the story of the TOP 150 articles on medium related with Big Data, Data Science and Data Visualization.

The first TOP 100 articles look like this :

Does the number of images inside a post influence the number of recommends that the posts get ?

From this visualization the answer seems to say no. (but it does, read more in a few minutes)

We can filter and see only the posts that have over 100 recommends

And if we exclude the posts tagged Data Visualization ?

Cannot make my opinion from this visualization. it`s the number of images relevant or not. Hmm. ( you will find out in just a moment )

What about if we sort them by the number of links ?

We can try and filter, to see just the post that have over 100 recommends.

Ideal reading time vs Link Count on posts tagged either Big Data, Data Science or Data Visualization.

From this visualization we can see that the ideal reading time is around 3 to 10 minutes per article.

What about the link count ?

From the above visualization, we would be tempted to say that 1 or 2 links is ideal.

If we consider the fact that the number of posts with 1 link is almost double then the number of posts with 2 links, and that the number of posts with 3 links is 3 times as less as 2 links, we could be deceived by the above visualization.

Let`s look at this table :

You have more then double the changes of getting more then 100 recommends if you posts 3 or 4 links in a post. (this is ignoring the real world and all of the other things that can influence this)

Ideal reading time vs Image Count on posts tagged either Big Data, Data Science or Data Visualization.

On the Reading Time vs Image Count, we see a better spread of the articles that have over 100 recommends.

And if we look again at the excel table, for the number of images per article, we see something interesting :

If you do a post on medium, tagged either Big Data, Data Science or Data Visualization, and you don`t add a image, you have a 1 in 141 posts chance of getting over 100 recommends.

If you add 2 images to that post, the odds are 50 % better, a 1 in 77 chance of getting more then 100 recommends.

Add 3 images and you have a probability of 1 in 45.

Increase the number of images from 3 images to 4 images in a post, and you double your chances of having your post reaching over 100 recommends.

1 in every 21 posts have over 100 recommends, for posts tagged either Big Data, Data Science or Data Visualization.

Add 9 images, and the odds of having a post that gets over 100 recommends increase to 1 in every 12th post.

10 images ? every 7th articles posted that have 10 images gets over 100 recommends.

This seems to good to be try, and probably is.

Also, I was not able to filter and see the results for each individual tag( aka, I would have spend to much time doing this, not the focus of this article), I`m guessing there is a bias from the Data Visualization. You can download the data-set and play with the data, to see what results do you find.

TOP 150 articles

Have to have in mind that the number of recommends has probably changed from January 2017, when i got the data.

About Me

In the last 3 years I collaborated with Rise Project, were I did data analysis and pattern recognition to uncover patterns of corruption in unstructured data-sets.

As a job, I am a Senior Map Analyst, working with OpenStreetMap data.

In September 2016 i moved for 3 months to San Francisco, to start a new life.

Now i`m back in Romania, searching for a Remote/ Part/Full Time Project/Job were I can apply my expertise related with data science.
