It’s frustrating as a manager to see a highly talented employee waste their potential. They have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do well, so why aren’t they performing as well as they could? They have shown they’re capable more than once—solved problems creatively, drove large projects to completion, and took risks that are necessary for future success. But what should you do if their performance is not consistent—they’re highly unpredictable. When faced with this situation, many managers feel powerless—when they don’t even understand what’s preventing their employees from putting in their best effort. How can they do anything to help? This perceived sense of lack of control over their employees' performance often leads to destructive behaviors—blaming, complaining or denying opportunities that they need the most. Pulling back focus from people who need attention creates a downward spiral of unfulfilled potential, unmet expectations, and even more frustration which pushes them further down instead of lifting them. If your employees are unpredictable or inconsistent in their performance or if they are not reaching their potential, helping them bridge this gap is your responsibility as a manager. Don’t assume there’s something wrong with them or that they simply don’t care. Many factors play a role in determining how people put their talents to use. Great leaders can see the greatness in others when they can’t see it themselves and lead them to their highest potential they don’t even know. — Roy T. Bennett Here are the four practices I have used to help my people rise higher by tapping into their unused potential and enabling them to do more than they ever dreamt to be possible: Help them realize their true strengths Self-doubt is one of the most prevalent feelings at work which can prevent people from reaching their full potential. People who deal with feelings of unworthiness and inadequacy often fail to put their talents to use. They refuse to take up challenging work with the fear of not meeting expectations. They procrastinate and keep putting things off with the worry that even their best effort is not good enough. While you see them as a smart, talented and high potential person, all they see in themselves is a fraud. Instead of recognizing their achievements and acknowledging their skills and abilities, imposter syndrome makes them attribute their success to luck, their ability to work harder than everyone else, knowing the right people, being in the right place at the right time, or simply their interpersonal charms like being funny, friendly or witty that makes them more likable. This makes them undermine their experience and expertise. They fail to realize their full potential because their time and energy goes into hiding their shortcomings as opposed to utilizing their strengths. Help your employee bridge this confidence gap by: Show them what they’re capable of—talk about their strengths, skills and abilities that enabled past performance. Share your own fears and insecurities. This will make them see that imposter syndrome is a universal phenomenon and they’re not alone in feeling this way. Set clear goals and discuss an action plan. Daily progress towards their goals will amplify the value of consistent small steps instead of trying to take giant leaps. If your employee isn’t reaching their full potential because of self-doubt, give them the occasional confidence boost by enabling them to recognize their strengths and giving them the opportunity to put them to use. We all have patterns and defaults, including in the roles we play at work. The better you can accept others for who they are, the easier it will be to work with them. Flexibility will help provide an environment where everyone feels accepted for their unique strengths and skills. — Darcy Luoma Give them action oriented feedback If you’ve been giving a lot of feedback to your team members, but they still aren’t reaching their potential, most likely the way you’re giving feedback is wrong. Just because you have said something multiple times does not mean your message has landed right. What you say matters more than how many times you say it. When giving feedback, do you state: Which behaviors led to successful outcomes? What did they do specifically that helped them achieve positive results? Vague feedback can do your employee more damage than good. When they don’t know how to apply your feedback, it can leave them feeling misaligned, confused and disoriented. Success can be replicated only when your employee knows which behaviors to repeat. Give them action oriented feedback—use the start, stop and continue practice: What do they need to start doing that they aren’t already doing? Which behaviors aren’t working well that must be stopped right away? What’s working well for them that they must continue practicing? For example: *If their new system architecture design was very detail oriented and had covered fault tolerance, scalability, performance and other critical measures, specifically call this out in your feedback. Appreciate them for proactively thinking about these things instead of being an afterthought.* If they came up with a creative way to solve a problem by challenging traditional thinking, point out their ability to think differently and step outside their comfort zone. Giving specific feedback will enable your employees to act on it potentially leading to achieving excellence in their work and reaching for their potential. Feedback is the bridge to effectively connect lesson-learned from the past to the future performance and potential. — Pearl Zhu Take a pulse of their motivation Motivation determines not only whether your team member starts a task, but also whether they stick with it when it gets challenging or difficult. Without motivation, they fail to put effort and energy into making things work. Their mind is tuned out because something that’s bothering them tells them that they simply don’t care. \ A lot of things can leave them feeling unmotivated: Going through a bad phase in their personal life. Being passed up for a promotion that they believed they deserved. Repeating the same kind of work and not getting exciting new opportunities. Working long hours but doing less impactful work. Dealing with a difficult employee who’s getting on their nerves, causing them stress and anxiety. Feeling unappreciated and undervalued for their contributions. Mental exhaustion and burnout from overwork. The good thing about motivation is that it’s a temporary feeling and something that’s completely within their control. If your employee isn’t reaching their full potential because they appear demotivated, don’t ignore it. You can do a lot to help them get over it by taking the time to dig deeper into what’s making them feel this way. Discuss and identify what’s eating up into their motivation. You’ll have to play a little bit of detective here since they are most likely to disagree with your observation and portray everything’s fine even when the issue is taking up a lot of their mental space thereby preventing them from doing their best work. There’s no one way to turn things around for them—the solution will depend on why they are feeling demotivated in the first place. However, there are few things you must do to ensure your discussion is productive: Don’t assume you already know how they’re feeling. Show curiosity to understand. Don’t push too hard if they aren’t willing to share it yet. Just let them know that you’re around to listen whenever they feel prepared. Don’t show irritation or judgment in your voice. Only show your support. Don’t take it personally. How they’re feeling may have nothing to do with you as a manager. If you understand the problem, don’t provide solutions. Help them find the path forward by asking good questions and guiding them to reach their own conclusions. Lack of motivation is not your employees' mistake nor is it a permanent condition. Ups and downs are a part of life and people shouldn’t be expected to always be at their best. Treat it as a passing phase and show your support to help them get through it. When you encourage others, you boost their self-esteem, enhance their self-confidence, make them work harder, lift their spirits and make them successful in their endeavors. Encouragement goes straight to the heart and is always available. Be an encourager. Always. — Roy T. Bennett Look inward to your own behaviors and actions If you have done everything and still don’t see much improvement in their work, don’t rule out the fact that the problem may have nothing to do with them, it’s you. How do you come across to others? How do they perceive your behaviors and actions? How do you react to mistakes and failures? How do you handle disagreements? Are you fair and unbiased in how you treat your people? Do you empower them to think on their own and make decisions or do you feel the need to have a final say in everything? Good management uplifts people and helps them shine. Bad management pulls them down and prevents them from reaching their potential. For example: They may have great problem solving abilities, but every time they bring up a solution that challenges traditional thinking, you disregard their opinion and tell them to stick to old methods. What does your behavior tell them—that their opinion doesn't matter, which discourages them and they stop thinking differently. They may enjoy working independently and want to grow on the individual contributor path, but you keep pushing them to take lead responsibilities. Being coerced to do work that they don’t enjoy or not getting sufficient time to practice skills they want to put to use can leave them feeling frustrated, unfulfilled and dissatisfied. If you really want your employee to fulfill their potential, take a moment to think about how your behaviors and actions might be getting in the way. Accepting you’re the source of the problem is hard—only people with high self-awareness and willingness to change can do so. People who are blind to their flaws will only complain and blame while doing nothing to bring about a positive change. People are the foundation of any company’s success. It gradually turned into something that would be useful for other developers, too, so I made it public, and I still can't believe how far it has come! Clear vision is key When it comes to the vision, having a clear goal is essential. It's the foundation of your project, so the more concise it will be, the easier it will be to build upon. Before I started to build anything, I knew my focus would be on simplicity, usability, and the design of the app. I based all my further decisions on that. 2. Planning rewards itself As A. Lincoln once said, "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe". The same could be applied to development. I spent quite a lot of time planning all the features. But it made the design and coding part way easier since I knew what functionality I was going for. 3. UI is thinking made visual Once you have planned everything, coming up with the UI is like displaying your thought logic so that users can interact with it. For example, I used Figma to create all of the UI components for the app. The UI is your presentation, so it should be easy to use and straightforward. 4. UX is all about the details The UX should not be underestimated since all the little things combined leave an impression on users and affect whether or not they will come back. I spent time improving UX, such as the loading screen, transitions between the background changes, implementing keyboard shortcuts, and more. 5. Passion projects boost motivation I am a strong believer that passion fuels success, therefore I feel that it is important to work on something that genuinely interests and attracts you. I've been listening to various genres of electronic subgenres for a couple of decades now, and it was a dream of mine to compile them all on this app. 6. Don't settle for less "Build it, and they will come" is a myth! Spread the word about your work wherever you can! Listen to your users and improve your project accordingly. I launched the project on Product Hunt, wrote about it on DEV, Hashnode, and Medium, and now I'm actively using Twitter and LinkedIn to announce updates. 7. Responsive design = priority With so many devices out there, your app should be adapted for various screen sizes. Use analytics like Umami to get to know your audience better. For example, I like to listen to DevTunes FM via the web version while I am coding, and I am also listening when I am running or biking via the mobile version. 8. Persistence pays off Keep learning new stuff, consume quality content, and work on new ideas. No problem is hard enough if you put enough thought into it. I had the opportunity to sit down with 8an, co-founder of /Reach, for a discussion about /Reach’s mission to help fix Crypto Twitter. /Reach, Q1: Can you tell us about yourself and your route to web3? My background started in consumer goods. I started my career at Rocket Internet as a Global Venture Developer, where we would launch day-one revenue-generating businesses in Europe and Emerging markets within 90 days from conception. After having gone the entrepreneurial route, namely as a founding team member of Numan (which grew to be the largest digital men’s health clinic in Europe), I founded Particle, a real-world assets on-chain fractionalization protocol focused on fine art. Q2: When Elon Musk bought Twitter a year ago, he promised to fix its bot problem once and for all. Do you think it is a herculean task to beat Twitter bots? It’s definitely not easy, but as with everything, recognising that there is a problem is a big first step. I think it's very much doable, especially with Musk's approach, which is to essentially make it economically deterrent for bots to exist - a similar approach to what /Reach is doing to those seeking to abuse or game the system. The goal, in the long run, is to make it unviable for a bot or exploiter ecosystem to exist. Q3: You have rightly pointed out that Crypto Twitter has a massive bot problem. Can you tell us how serious this problem is? Reportedly, up to 10% of X’s user base are bots. How deep this problem goes, we’ll only know once Musk reveals the extent of the issue as he has promised. What I can say is that within Crypto Twitter, it definitely is something everyone--from project owners, community leaders, artists, and individuals--sees as detrimental to their efforts. Q4: What can you tell us about the founding of /Reach, and how do you intend to tackle this problem? Attention and reach are the greatest challenges for brands, community builders, artists, and projects to crack. The X algorithm is broken, and Musk’s Ads Revenue Sharing program has fallen short of properly remunerating accounts for their reach. The “pay influencers” model is broken too - pseudo/low-value engagement doesn't help bring true visibility to comms that need to be promoted – with unfair and opaque pricing structures. Lastly, in an effort to maintain integrity on their profiles, even a brand’s greatest champions are reluctant to show support. Many aren’t even aware of which pieces of content would be most impactful for them to share. To elaborate further: Modern online tribes and communities, from gaming servers to Web3 projects, have become advertising-resistant, disregarding messages even from Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs). Traditional advertising struggles to infiltrate these tight-knit digital circles authentically. Reputable Web2 brands, despite having considerable media budgets, have yet to effectively access these communities and tribes in a manner that feels genuine and is welcomed. The outsider perception of brands is a significant barrier. Acceptance within these communities hinges on genuine endorsement from active, core tribe members. We approach this problem by harnessing the very ethos of Web3 in having the participants in a network equally participate in its success. The strategies we employ include the promotion of content, products, and services within active, fervent communities across diverse platforms – Web3, gaming, sports, and gambling, among others – organically and unobtrusively; overcoming the ‘Outsider Stigma’: Navigating through the walls of advertising resistance by enabling promotions through trusted, native voices within each tribe or community; and delivering a win-win scenario, allowing communities to monetize their user base while brands authentically connect with fresh, engaged audiences. Q5: What role does Twitter play in keeping the crypto community active? Why is Twitter the platform with the most crypto users? Twitter is our open forum and our playground, it is extremely important in the crypto community. It’s supported, of course, by Discord, Telegram, and WeChat, but Twitter’s model of short, bite-size news-esque delivered content is perfect for the fast-paced nature of Crypto. Q6: What are some of the strategies employed by /Reach in combating Crypto’s Twitter bot problem? We won’t be able to fully solve X’s bot problem alone, but we will be able to make sure it does not affect the spend creators put through the /Reach protocol. The engineer and the reporter soon reached the little beach on which the dugong had been stranded. Already flocks of birds had attacked the mass of flesh, and had to be driven away with stones, for Cyrus wished to keep the fat for the use of the colony. As to the animal’s flesh it would furnish excellent food, for in the islands of the Malay Archipelago and elsewhere, it is especially reserved for the table of the native princes. But that was Neb’s affair. At this moment Cyrus Harding had other thoughts. He was much interested in the incident of the day before. He wished to penetrate the mystery of that submarine combat, and to ascertain what monster could have given the dugong so strange a wound. He remained at the edge of the lake, looking, observing; but nothing appeared under the tranquil waters, which sparkled in the first rays of the rising sun. At the beach, on which lay the body of the dugong, the water was tolerably shallow, but from this point the bottom of the lake sloped gradually, and it was probable that the depth was considerable in the center. The lake might be considered as a large center basin, which was filled by the water from the Red Creek. “Well, Cyrus,” said the reporter, “there seems to be nothing suspicious in this water.” “No, my dear Spilett,” replied the engineer, “and I really do not know how to account for the incident of yesterday.” “I acknowledge,” returned Spilett, “that the wound given this creature is, at least, very strange, and I cannot explain either how Top was so vigorously cast up out of the water. One could have thought that a powerful arm hurled him up, and that the same arm with a dagger killed the dugong!” “Yes,” replied the engineer, who had become thoughtful; “there is something there that I cannot understand. But do you better understand either, my dear Spilett, in what way I was saved myself—how I was drawn from the waves, and carried to the downs? No! Is it not true? Now, I feel sure that there is some mystery there, which, doubtless, we shall discover some day. Let us observe, but do not dwell on these singular incidents before our companions. Let us keep our remarks to ourselves, and continue our work.” It will be remembered that the engineer had not as yet been able to discover the place where the surplus water escaped, but he knew it must exist somewhere. He was much surprised to see a strong current at this place. By throwing in some bits of wood he found that it set towards the southern angle. He followed the current, and arrived at the south point of the lake. There was there a sort of depression in the water, as if it was suddenly lost in some fissure in the ground. Harding listened; placing his ear to the level of the lake, he very distinctly heard the noise of a subterranean fall. “There,” said he, rising, “is the discharge of the water; there, doubtless, by a passage in the granite cliff, it joins the sea, through cavities which we can use to our profit. Well, I can find it!” The engineer cut a long branch, stripped it of its leaves, and plunging it into the angle between the two banks, he found that there was a large hole one foot only beneath the surface of the water. This hole was the opening so long looked for in vain, and the force of the current was such that the branch was torn from the engineer’s hands and disappeared. “There is no doubt about it now,” repeated Harding. “There is the outlet, and I will lay it open to view!” “How?” asked Gideon Spilett. “By lowering the level of the water of the lake three feet.” “And how will you lower the level?” “By opening another outlet larger than this.” “At what place, Cyrus?” “At the part of the bank nearest the coast.” “But it is a mass of granite!” observed Spilett. “Well,” replied Cyrus Harding, “I will blow up the granite, and the water escaping, will subside, so as to lay bare this opening—” “And make a waterfall, by falling on to the beach,” added the reporter. “A fall that we shall make use of!” replied Cyrus. “Come, come!” The engineer hurried away his companion, whose confidence in Harding was such that he did not doubt the enterprise would succeed. And yet, how was this granite wall to be opened without powder, and with imperfect instruments? Was not this work upon which the engineer was so bent above their strength? When Harding and the reporter entered the Chimneys, they found Herbert and Pencroft unloading their raft of wood. “The woodmen have just finished, captain.” said the sailor, laughing, “and when you want masons—” “Masons,—no, but chemists,” replied the engineer. “Yes,” added the reporter, “we are going to blow up the island—” “Blow up the island?” cried Pencroft. “Part of it, at least,” replied Spilett. “Listen to me, my friends,” said the engineer. And he made known to them the result of his observations. According to him, a cavity, more or less considerable, must exist in the mass of granite which supported Prospect Heights, and he intended to penetrate into it. To do this, the opening through which the water rushed must first be cleared, and the level lowered by making a larger outlet. Therefore an explosive substance must be manufactured, which would make a deep trench in some other part of the shore. This was what Harding was going to attempt with the minerals which nature placed at his disposal. It is useless to say with what enthusiasm all, especially Pencroft, received this project. To employ great means, open the granite, create a cascade, that suited the sailor. And he would just as soon be a chemist as a mason or bootmaker, since the engineer wanted chemicals. He would be all that they liked, “even a professor of dancing and deportment,” said he to Neb, if that was ever necessary. Neb and Pencroft were first of all told to extract the grease from the dugong, and to keep the flesh, which was destined for food. Such perfect confidence had they in the engineer, that they set out directly, without even asking a question. A few minutes after them, Cyrus Harding, Herbert, and Gideon Spilett, dragging the hurdle, went towards the vein of coals, where those shistose pyrites abound which are met with in the most recent transition soil, and of which Harding had already found a specimen. All the day being employed in carrying a quantity of these stones to the Chimneys, by evening they had several tons. The next day, the 8th of May, the engineer began his manipulations. These shistose pyrites being composed principally of coal, flint, alumina, and sulphuret of iron—the latter in excess—it was necessary to separate the sulphuret of iron, and transform it into sulphate as rapidly as possible. The sulphate obtained, the sulphuric acid could then be extracted. This was the object to be attained. Sulphuric acid is one of the agents the most frequently employed, and the manufacturing importance of a nation can be measured by the consumption which is made of it. This acid would later be of great use to the settlers, in the manufacturing of candles, tanning skins, etc., but this time the engineer reserved it for another use. Cyrus Harding chose, behind the Chimneys, a site where the ground was perfectly level. On this ground he placed a layer of branches and chopped wood, on which were piled some pieces of shistose pyrites, buttressed one against the other, the whole being covered with a thin layer of pyrites, previously reduced to the size of a nut. This done, they set fire to the wood, the heat was communicated to the shist, which soon kindled, since it contains coal and sulphur. Then new layers of bruised pyrites were arranged so as to form an immense heap, the exterior of which was covered with earth and grass, several air-holes being left, as if it was a stack of wood which was to be carbonized to make charcoal. They then left the transformation to complete itself, and it would not take less than ten or twelve days for the sulphuret of iron to be changed to sulphate of iron and the alumina into sulphate of alumina, two equally soluble substances, the others, flint, burnt coal, and cinders, not being so. While this chemical work was going on, Cyrus Harding proceeded with other operations, which were pursued with more than zeal,—it was eagerness. Neb and Pencroft had taken away the fat from the dugong, and placed it in large earthen pots. It was then necessary to separate the glycerine from the fat by saponifying it. Now, to obtain this result, it had to be treated either with soda or lime. In fact, one or other of these substances, after having attacked the fat, would form a soap by separating the glycerine, and it was just this glycerine which the engineer wished to obtain. There was no want of lime, only treatment by lime would give calcareous soap, insoluble, and consequently useless, while treatment by soda would furnish, on the contrary, a soluble soap, which could be put to domestic use. Now, a practical man, like Cyrus Harding, would rather try to obtain soda. Was this difficult? No; for marine plants abounded on the shore, glass-wort, ficoides, and all those fucaceae which form wrack. A large quantity of these plants was collected, first dried, then burnt in holes in the open air. The combustion of these plants was kept up for several days, and the result was a compact gray mass, which has been long known under the name of “natural soda.” This obtained, the engineer treated the fat with soda, which gave both a soluble soap and that neutral substance, glycerine. But this was not all. Cyrus Harding still needed, in view of his future preparation, another substance, nitrate of potash, which is better known under the name of salt niter, or of saltpeter. Cyrus Harding could have manufactured this substance by treating the carbonate of potash, which would be easily extracted from the cinders of the vegetables, by azotic acid. But this acid was wanting, and he would have been in some difficulty, if nature had not happily furnished the saltpeter, without giving them any other trouble than that of picking it up. Herbert found a vein of it at the foot of Mount Franklin, and they had nothing to do but purify this salt. These different works lasted a week. They were finished before the transformation of the sulphuret into sulphate of iron had been accomplished. During the following days the settlers had time to construct a furnace of bricks of a particular arrangement, to serve for the distillation of the sulphate or iron when it had been obtained. All this was finished about the 18th of May, nearly at the time when the chemical transformation terminated. Gideon Spilett, Herbert, Neb, and Pencroft, skillfully directed by the engineer, had become most clever workmen. Before all masters, necessity is the one most listened to, and who teaches the best. When the heap of pyrites had been entirely reduced by fire, the result of the operation, consisting of sulphate of iron, sulphate of alumina, flint, remains of coal, and cinders was placed in a basinful of water. They stirred this mixture, let it settle, then decanted it, and obtained a clear liquid containing in solution sulphate of iron and sulphate of alumina, the other matters remaining solid, since they are insoluble. Lastly, this liquid being partly evaporated, crystals of sulphate of iron were deposited, and the not evaporated liquid, which contained the sulphate of alumina, was thrown away. Cyrus Harding had now at his disposal a large quantity of these sulphate of iron crystals, from which the sulphuric acid had to be extracted. The making of sulphuric acid is a very expensive manufacture. Considerable works are necessary—a special set of tools, an apparatus of platina, leaden chambers, unassailable by the acid, and in which the transformation is performed, etc. The engineer had none of these at his disposal, but he knew that, in Bohemia especially, sulphuric acid is manufactured by very simple means, which have also the advantage of producing it to a superior degree of concentration. It is thus that the acid known under the name of Nordhausen acid is made. To obtain sulphuric acid, Cyrus Harding had only one operation to make, to calcine the sulphate of iron crystals in a closed vase, so that the sulphuric acid should distil in vapor, which vapor, by condensation, would produce the acid. The crystals were placed in pots, and the heat from the furnace would distil the sulphuric acid. The operation was successfully completed, and on the 20th of May, twelve days after commencing it, the engineer was the possessor of the agent which later he hoped to use in so many different ways. Now, why did he wish for this agent? Simply to produce azotic acid; and that was easy, since saltpeter, attacked by sulphuric acid, gives azotic, or nitric, acid by distillation. But, after all, how was he going to employ this azotic acid? His companions were still ignorant of this, for he had not informed them of the result at which he aimed. However, the engineer had nearly accomplished his purpose, and by a last operation he would procure the substance which had given so much trouble. Taking some azotic acid, he mixed it with glycerine, which had been previously concentrated by evaporation, subjected to the water-bath, and he obtained, without even employing a refrigerant mixture, several pints of an oily yellow mixture. This last operation Cyrus Harding had made alone, in a retired place, at a distance from the Chimneys, for he feared the danger of an explosion, and when he showed a bottle of this liquid to his friends, he contented himself with saying,— “Here is nitro-glycerine!” It was really this terrible production, of which the explosive power is perhaps tenfold that of ordinary powder, and which has already caused so many accidents. However, since a way has been found to transform it into dynamite, that is to say, to mix with it some solid substance, clay or sugar, porous enough to hold it, the dangerous liquid has been used with some security. But dynamite was not yet known at the time when the settlers worked on Lincoln Island. “And is it that liquid that is going to blow up our rocks?” said Pencroft incredulously. “Yes, my friend,” replied the engineer, “and this nitro-glycerine will produce so much the more effect, as the granite is extremely hard, and will oppose a greater resistance to the explosion.” “And when shall we see this, captain?” “To-morrow, as soon as we have dug a hole for the mine, replied the engineer.” The next day, the 21st of May, at daybreak, the miners went to the point which formed the eastern shore of Lake Grant, and was only five hundred feet from the coast. At this place, the plateau inclined downwards from the waters, which were only restrained by their granite case. Therefore, if this case was broken, the water would escape by the opening and form a stream, which, flowing over the inclined surface of the plateau, would rush on to the beach. Consequently, the level of the lake would be greatly lowered, and the opening where the water escaped would be exposed, which was their final aim. Under the engineer’s directions, Pencroft, armed with a pickaxe, which he handled skillfully and vigorously, attacked the granite. The hole was made on the point of the shore, slanting, so that it should meet a much lower level than that of the water of the lake. In this way the explosive force, by scattering the rock, would open a large place for the water to rush out. The work took some time, for the engineer, wishing to produce a great effect, intended to devote not less than seven quarts of nitro-glycerine to the operation. But Pencroft, relieved by Neb, did so well, that towards four o’clock in the evening, the mine was finished. Now the question of setting fire to the explosive substance was raised. Generally, nitro-glycerine is ignited by caps of fulminate, which in bursting cause the explosion. A shock is therefore needed to produce the explosion, for, simply lighted, this substance would burn without exploding. Cyrus Harding could certainly have fabricated a percussion cap. In default of fulminate, he could easily obtain a substance similar to guncotton, since he had azotic acid at his disposal. This substance, pressed in a cartridge, and introduced among the nitro-glycerine, would burst by means of a fuse, and cause the explosion. But Cyrus Harding knew that nitro-glycerine would explode by a shock. He resolved to employ this means, and try another way, if this did not succeed. In fact, the blow of a hammer on a few drops of nitro-glycerine, spread out on a hard surface, was enough to create an explosion. But the operator could not be there to give the blow, without becoming a victim to the operation. Harding, therefore, thought of suspending a mass of iron, weighing several pounds, by means of a fiber, to an upright just above the mine. Another long fiber, previously impregnated with sulphur, was attached to the middle of the first, by one end, while the other lay on the ground several feet distant from the mine. The second fiber being set on fire, it would burn till it reached the first. This catching fire in its turn, would break, and the mass of iron would fall on the nitro-glycerine. This apparatus being then arranged, the engineer, after having sent his companions to a distance, filled the hole, so that the nitro-glycerine was on a level with the opening; then he threw a few drops of it on the surface of the rock, above which the mass of iron was already suspended. This done, Harding lit the end of the sulphured fiber, and leaving the place, he returned with his companions to the Chimneys. The fiber was intended to burn five and twenty minutes, and, in fact, five and twenty minutes afterwards a most tremendous explosion was heard. The island appeared to tremble to its very foundation. Stones were projected in the air as if by the eruption of a volcano. The shock produced by the displacing of the air was such, that the rocks of the Chimneys shook. The settlers, although they were more than two miles from the mine, were thrown on the ground. They rose, climbed the plateau, and ran towards the place where the bank of the lake must have been shattered by the explosion. A cheer escaped them! A large rent was seen in the granite! A rapid stream of water rushed foaming across the plateau and dashed down a height of three hundred feet on to the beach! WE REACH MOUNT SNEFFELS—THE "REYKIR" here CHAPTER XI - WE REACH MOUNT SNEFFELS—THE "REYKIR" Stapi is a town consisting of thirty huts, built on a large plain of lava, exposed to the rays of the sun, reflected from the volcano. It stretches its humble tenements along the end of a little fjord, surrounded by a basaltic wall of the most singular character. Basalt is a brown rock of igneous origin. It assumes regular forms, which astonish by their singular appearance. Here we found Nature proceeding geometrically, and working quite after a human fashion, as if she had employed the plummet line, the compass and the rule. If elsewhere she produces grand artistic effects by piling up huge masses without order or connection—if elsewhere we see truncated cones, imperfect pyramids, with an odd succession of lines; here, as if wishing to give a lesson in regularity, and preceding the architects of the early ages, she has erected a severe order of architecture, which neither the splendors of Babylon nor the marvels of Greece ever surpassed. I had often heard of the Giant's Causeway in Ireland, and of Fingal's Cave in one of the Hebrides, but the grand spectacle of a real basaltic formation had never yet come before my eyes. This at Stapi gave us an idea of one in all its wonderful beauty and grace. The wall of the fjord, like nearly the whole of the peninsula, consisted of a series of vertical columns, in height about thirty feet. These upright pillars of stone, of the finest proportions, supported an archivault of horizontal columns which formed a kind of half-vaulted roof above the sea. At certain intervals, and below this natural basin, the eye was pleased and surprised by the sight of oval openings through which the outward waves came thundering in volleys of foam. Some banks of basalt, torn from their fastenings by the fury of the waves, lay scattered on the ground like the ruins of an ancient temple—ruins eternally young, over which the storms of ages swept without producing any perceptible effect! This was the last stage of our journey. Hans had brought us along with fidelity and intelligence, and I began to feel somewhat more comfortable when I reflected that he was to accompany us still farther on our way. When we halted before the house of the Rector, a small and incommodious cabin, neither handsome nor more comfortable than those of his neighbors, I saw a man in the act of shoeing a horse, a hammer in his hand, and a leathern apron tied round his waist. "Be happy," said the eider-down hunter, using his national salutation in his own language. "God dag—good day!" replied the former, in excellent Danish. "Kyrkoherde," cried Hans, turning round and introducing him to my uncle. "The Rector," repeated the worthy Professor; "it appears, my dear Harry, that this worthy man is the Rector, and is not above doing his own work." During the speaking of these words the guide intimated to the Kyrkoherde what was the true state of the case. The good man, ceasing from his occupation, gave a kind of halloo, upon which a tall woman, almost a giantess, came out of the hut. She was at least six feet high, which in that region is something considerable. My first impression was one of horror. I thought she had come to give us the Icelandic kiss. I had, however, nothing to fear, for she did not even show much inclination to receive us into her house. The room devoted to strangers appeared to me to be by far the worst in the presbytery; it was narrow, dirty and offensive. There was, however, no choice about the matter. The Rector had no notion of practicing the usual cordial and antique hospitality. Far from it. Before the day was over, I found we had to deal with a blacksmith, a fisherman, a hunter, a carpenter, anything but a clergyman. It must be said in his favor that we had caught him on a weekday; probably he appeared to greater advantage on the Sunday. These poor priests receive from the Danish Government a most ridiculously inadequate salary, and collect one quarter of the tithe of their parish—not more than sixty marks current, or about L3 10s. sterling. Hence the necessity of working to live. In truth, we soon found that our host did not count civility among the cardinal virtues. My uncle soon became aware of the kind of man he had to deal with. Instead of a worthy and learned scholar, he found a dull ill-mannered peasant. He therefore resolved to start on his great expedition as soon as possible. He did not care about fatigue, and resolved to spend a few days in the mountains. The preparations for our departure were made the very next day after our arrival at Stapi; Hans now hired three Icelanders to take the place of the horses—which could no longer carry our luggage. When, however, these worthy islanders had reached the bottom of the crater, they were to go back and leave us to ourselves. This point was settled before they would agree to start. On this occasion, my uncle partly confided in Hans, the eider-duck hunter, and gave him to understand that it was his intention to continue his exploration of the volcano to the last possible limits. Hans listened calmly, and then nodded his head. To go there, or elsewhere, to bury himself in the bowels of the earth, or to travel over its summits, was all the same to him! As for me, amused and occupied by the incidents of travel, I had begun to forget the inevitable future; but now I was once more destined to realize the actual state of affairs. What was to be done? Run away? But if I really had intended to leave Professor Hardwigg to his fate, it should have been at Hamburg and not at the foot of Sneffels. One idea, above all others, began to trouble me: a very terrible idea, and one calculated to shake the nerves of a man even less sensitive than myself. "Let us consider the matter," I said to myself; "we are going to ascend the Sneffels mountain. Well and good. We are about to pay a visit to the very bottom of the crater. Good, still. Others have done it and did not perish from that course. "That, however, is not the whole matter to be considered. If a road does really present itself by which to descend into the dark and subterraneous bowels of Mother Earth, if this thrice unhappy Saknussemm has really told the truth, we shall be most certainly lost in the midst of the labyrinth of subterraneous galleries of the volcano. Now, we have no evidence to prove that Sneffels is really extinct. What proof have we that an eruption is not shortly about to take place? Because the monster has slept soundly since 1219, does it follow that he is never to wake? "If he does wake what is to become of us?" These were questions worth thinking about, and upon them I reflected long and deeply. I could not lie down in search of sleep without dreaming of eruptions. The more I thought, the more I objected to be reduced to the state of dross and ashes. I could stand it no longer; so I determined at last to submit the whole case to my uncle, in the most adroit manner possible, and under the form of some totally irreconcilable hypothesis. I sought him. I laid before him my fears, and then drew back in order to let him get his passion over at his ease. "I have been thinking about the matter," he said, in the quietest tone in the world. What did he mean? Was he at last about to listen to the voice of reason? Did he think of suspending his projects? It was almost too much happiness to be true. I however made no remark. In fact, I was only too anxious not to interrupt him, and allowed him to reflect at his leisure. After some moments he spoke out. "I have been thinking about the matter," he resumed. "Ever since we have been at Stapi, my mind has been almost solely occupied with the grave question which has been submitted to me by yourself—for nothing would be unwiser and more inconsistent than to act with imprudence." "I heartily agree with you, my dear uncle," was my somewhat hopeful rejoinder. "It is now six hundred years since Sneffels has spoken, but though now reduced to a state of utter silence, he may speak again. New volcanic eruptions are always preceded by perfectly well-known phenomena. I have closely examined the inhabitants of this region; I have carefully studied the soil, and I beg to tell you emphatically, my dear Harry, there will be no eruption at present." As I listened to his positive affirmations, I was stupefied and could say nothing. "I see you doubt my word," said my uncle; "follow me." I obeyed mechanically. Leaving the presbytery, the Professor took a road through an opening in the basaltic rock, which led far away from the sea. We were soon in open country, if we could give such a name to a place all covered with volcanic deposits. The whole land seemed crushed under the weight of enormous stones—of trap, of basalt, of granite, of lava, and of all other volcanic substances. I could see many spouts of steam rising in the air. These white vapors, called in the Icelandic language "reykir," come from hot water fountains, and indicate by their violence the volcanic activity of the soil. Now the sight of these appeared to justify my apprehension. I was, therefore, all the more surprised and mortified when my uncle thus addressed me. "You see all this smoke, Harry, my boy?" "Yes, sir." "Well, as long as you see them thus, you have nothing to fear from the volcano." "How can that be?" "Be careful to remember this," continued the Professor. "At the approach of an eruption these spouts of vapor redouble their activity—to disappear altogether during the period of volcanic eruption; for the elastic fluids, no longer having the necessary tension, seek refuge in the interior of the crater, instead of escaping through the fissures of the earth. If, then, the steam remains in its normal or habitual state, if their energy does not increase, and if you add to this, the remark that the wind is not replaced by heavy atmospheric pressure and dead calm, you may be quite sure that there is no fear of any immediate eruption." "But—" "Enough, my boy. When science has sent forth her fiat—it is only to hear and obey." I came back to the house quite downcast and disappointed. My uncle had completely defeated me with his scientific arguments. Nevertheless, I had still one hope, and that was, when once we were at the bottom of the crater, that it would be impossible in default of a gallery or tunnel, to descend any deeper; and this, despite all the learned Saknussemms in the world. I passed the whole of the following night with a nightmare on my chest! and, after unheard-of miseries and tortures, found myself in the very depths of the earth, from which I was suddenly launched into planetary space, under the form of an eruptive rock! Next day, June 23d, Hans calmly awaited us outside the presbytery with his three companions loaded with provisions, tools, and instruments. Two iron-shod poles, two guns, and two large game bags, were reserved for my uncle and myself. Hans, who was a man who never forgot even the minutest precautions, had added to our baggage a large skin full of water, as an addition to our gourds. This assured us water for eight days. It was nine o'clock in the morning when we were quite ready. The rector and his huge wife or servant, I never knew which, stood at the door to see us off. They appeared to be about to inflict on us the usual final kiss of the Icelanders. To our supreme astonishment their adieu took the shape of a formidable bill, in which they even counted the use of the pastoral house, really and truly the most abominable and dirty place I ever was in. The worthy couple cheated and robbed us like a Swiss innkeeper, and made us feel, by the sum we had to pay, the splendors of their hospitality. My uncle, however, paid without bargaining. A man who had made up his mind to undertake a voyage into the Interior of the Earth, is not the man to haggle over a few miserable rix-dollars. This important matter settled, Hans gave the signal for departure, and some few moments later we had left Stapi. IN WHICH PHILEAS FOGG AT LAST REACHES LONDON Phileas Fogg was in prison. He had been shut up in the Custom House, and he was to be transferred to London the next day. Passepartout, when he saw his master arrested, would have fallen upon Fix had he not been held back by some policemen. Aouda was thunderstruck at the suddenness of an event which she could not understand. Passepartout explained to her how it was that the honest and courageous Fogg was arrested as a robber. The young woman’s heart revolted against so heinous a charge, and when she saw that she could attempt to do nothing to save her protector, she wept bitterly. As for Fix, he had arrested Mr. Fogg because it was his duty, whether Mr. Fogg were guilty or not. The thought then struck Passepartout, that he was the cause of this new misfortune! Had he not concealed Fix’s errand from his master? When Fix revealed his true character and purpose, why had he not told Mr. Fogg? If the latter had been warned, he would no doubt have given Fix proof of his innocence, and satisfied him of his mistake; at least, Fix would not have continued his journey at the expense and on the heels of his master, only to arrest him the moment he set foot on English soil. Passepartout wept till he was blind, and felt like blowing his brains out. Aouda and he had remained, despite the cold, under the portico of the Custom House. Neither wished to leave the place; both were anxious to see Mr. Fogg again. That gentleman was really ruined, and that at the moment when he was about to attain his end. This arrest was fatal. Having arrived at Liverpool at twenty minutes before twelve on the 21st of December, he had till a quarter before nine that evening to reach the Reform Club, that is, nine hours and a quarter; the journey from Liverpool to London was six hours. If anyone, at this moment, had entered the Custom House, he would have found Mr. Fogg seated, motionless, calm, and without apparent anger, upon a wooden bench. He was not, it is true, resigned; but this last blow failed to force him into an outward betrayal of any emotion. Was he being devoured by one of those secret rages, all the more terrible because contained, and which only burst forth, with an irresistible force, at the last moment? No one could tell. There he sat, calmly waiting—for what? Did he still cherish hope? Did he still believe, now that the door of this prison was closed upon him, that he would succeed? However that may have been, Mr. Fogg carefully put his watch upon the table, and observed its advancing hands. Not a word escaped his lips, but his look was singularly set and stern. The situation, in any event, was a terrible one, and might be thus stated: if Phileas Fogg was honest he was ruined; if he was a knave, he was caught. Did escape occur to him? Did he examine to see if there were any practicable outlet from his prison? Did he think of escaping from it? Possibly; for once he walked slowly around the room. But the door was locked, and the window heavily barred with iron rods. He sat down again, and drew his journal from his pocket. On the line where these words were written, “21st December, Saturday, Liverpool,” he added, “80th day, 11.40 a.m.,” and waited. The Custom House clock struck one. Mr. Fogg observed that his watch was two hours too fast. Two hours! Admitting that he was at this moment taking an express train, he could reach London and the Reform Club by a quarter before nine, p.m. His forehead slightly wrinkled. At thirty-three minutes past two he heard a singular noise outside, then a hasty opening of doors. Passepartout’s voice was audible, and immediately after that of Fix. Phileas Fogg’s eyes brightened for an instant. The door swung open, and he saw Passepartout, Aouda, and Fix, who hurried towards him. Fix was out of breath, and his hair was in disorder. He could not speak. “Sir,” he stammered, “sir—forgive me—most—unfortunate resemblance—robber arrested three days ago—you are free!” Phileas Fogg was free! He walked to the detective, looked him steadily in the face, and with the only rapid motion he had ever made in his life, or which he ever would make, drew back his arms, and with the precision of a machine knocked Fix down. “Well hit!” cried Passepartout, “Parbleu! that’s what you might call a good application of English fists!” Fix, who found himself on the floor, did not utter a word. He had only received his deserts. Mr. Fogg, Aouda, and Passepartout left the Custom House without delay, got into a cab, and in a few moments descended at the station. Phileas Fogg asked if there was an express train about to leave for London. It was forty minutes past two. The express train had left thirty-five minutes before. Phileas Fogg then ordered a special train. There were several rapid locomotives on hand; but the railway arrangements did not permit the special train to leave until three o’clock. At that hour Phileas Fogg, having stimulated the engineer by the offer of a generous reward, at last set out towards London with Aouda and his faithful servant. It was necessary to make the journey in five hours and a half; and this would have been easy on a clear road throughout. But there were forced delays, and when Mr. Fogg stepped from the train at the terminus, all the clocks in London were striking ten minutes before nine.
