The <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/5/16737288/microsoft-windows-10-qualcomm-arm-laptops-launch" target="_blank">story line</a> for Microsoft’s recent release of Windows 10 on ARM is that they’ve learned from the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2013/3/21/4004540/intel-vs-microsoft-how-atom-processors-could-kill-windows-rt" target="_blank">Windows RT disaster</a>. Those idiots, what were they thinking back then?! As is usually the case, the real story is more nuanced than “they were idiots” — and I think more interesting. It also has consequences for the new release and explains some of the strategy behind these recent releases.
