A cryptocurrency that runs on its own dedicated blockchain, such as Bitcoin, is much more complex to develop. Cryptocurrencies are software applications, and very simple ones at that. The ERC20 implementation from OpenZeppelin has three contract variables and 13 methods. The contract is the base for most of the cryptocurrencies out there. It only has 228 lines of code, and of those two thirds are comments.
