Why Use Darknet? Modern-day internet – by virtue of its initially open infrastructure – provides massive possibilities for both violating privacy, spying on users, and for restricting their access to information, as well as for imposing particular models of political and economic behavior. The internet allows for prosecution of people on the grounds of their political, religious, national, racial, and gender identity. Problems of Darknet People around the world use various anonymous networks for the protection from prosecution, dissemination and access to information. We have analyzed the most popular anonymous networks from the standpoint of their usability and security. As a result, we have identified a number of shared problems. The first issue is slow operation of websites available in such networks as compared with the clearnet, and we mean subjectively slow opening of even ‘light’ HTML pages with the minimum amount of graphic objects and no interactive animation. This is because private internet ecosystems do not currently have protocols for trusted private hosting services, and this makes most quality-level hosting service providers potential points of data leakage and necessitates the use of servers and communications channels with less than adequate capacity to protect such online resources. The second important issue is the actual absence of a uniform internet directory designed for the publication of shared information, as well as the lack of search systems operating with websites in anonymous networks. Again, the reason behind this is the lack of trusted protocols for setting up search catalogs. Resource cataloging and search is outsourced to centralized third-party services, which poses threat to privacy of their users. Our Solution We teamed up to try and tackle these issues and formed The Oracle of Liberty DAO. Our goal is to give back to online users their rights and freedoms as declared in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, namely the right to privacy, the right to protection from prosecution on any grounds, and the right to data access by resisting third party censorship.
