Delaying test automation during the later stages of business development is usually inefficient. Similarly, it may be challenging to introduce all forms of testing at the beginning of the project. An effective testing plan involves implementing appropriate types of tests at alternating stages of business development in a consistent manner. In this article, I outline a step-by-step plan for achieving this goal.

Understanding Project Readiness

Understanding whether your software project is ready for test automation is important in deciding whether to invest in the process. To ensure that it will be worthwhile, you need to analyze the status of your project and calculate the return on investment (ROI). In this sense, exploring the different methods for calculating your project's readiness is essential.


When considering the best time to start test automation, there are several key factors that you should analyze. These factors include:


  • Continuous Delivery Cycle: if testing delays in a project become too long, and manual testing slows down the development team's ability to deploy features quickly, it may be time to consider automation. This can help eliminate the need for long, time-consuming agile processes and manual checks, allowing faster and more efficient development.
  • Budget and Resources: consider the available budget, resources, and cost of automation tools before starting automation testing.
  • Test Frequency and Repeatability: analyze the test frequency and repeatability before starting automation testing.
  • Scope and Coverage: consider the scope and coverage of the tests to be automated.
  • Time to Market: consider whether automation testing will impact the time to market.
  • Testing Environment: ensure the testing environment is stable and mimics the production environment.


Incorporating the previously mentioned best practices for test automation is essential to applying a DevOps approach to software development. By doing so, your team can conduct more comprehensive testing as part of the continuous development and deployment process.


Additionally, in certain projects, it may be necessary to utilize automation during functional testing, which encompasses smoke testing, regression testing, and repetitive testing tasks. Automated testing may also be required for non-functional testing purposes such as performance, security, and stress testing.

Step-by-Step Implementation of Test Automation at Various Stages of Business Growth

Gradual implementation of test automation is essential as a company grows and takes on more complex projects for maximizing the benefits of automation. Automating all testing from the outset can be overwhelming and inefficient. With a phased approach, companies can prioritize areas for automation, allocate resources accordingly, and build a comprehensive automation suite over time. Furthermore, as projects become more complex, companies can gradually acquire the necessary skills and tools. In this article, I will discuss an example of a step-by-step implementation strategy of test automation that you can apply to your projects.

In the first stage, while you are developing the backend, it is essential to implement API and unit testing. This step is crucial for ensuring the quality of the software product.


API testing helps identify and eliminate communication issues between different parts of the application. This ensures that API endpoints are working as expected and that the data is being transferred correctly. Additionally, API testing helps to detect any security vulnerabilities that might exist in the API. A well-tested API reduces the risk of errors and improves the application's overall stability.


Unit testing, on the other hand, is done to test the individual components of the application. Testing of UI elements such as buttons, forms, links, and product displays, as well as interactions between them, is included throughout UI testing.

  • Usability testing. This technique involves testing the ease of use of the app and how easy it is for the customer to navigate. It can help identify areas where your service can be improved for a seamless  user experience.
  • Compatibility testing. This technique involves testing the app on different devices and browsers to ensure it is compatible with various configurations. This is important because users may access the app from other devices and browsers.


By using these techniques, you can ensure that the UI of the app is not only functional and user-friendly but is also compatible with different configurations, as well as performing efficiently. This can help improve the user experience.

3. Scaling Up as the Company Grows

As a company grows, it becomes increasingly important to consider the scalability of its execution environment. This means ensuring that the infrastructure supporting the company's applications and services can handle increasing users and transactions without becoming overloaded. With proper scalability, the company can avoid experiencing downtime, slow response times, and ultimately losing customers.

5. Refining Processes to Meet Growth Demands

As a company expands, it must incorporate additional tools and testing methods to optimize its automation process and accommodate the growing number of products and platforms it is focused on.


Advisor reporting tools could help us further optimize the automation process and manage more test cases. This type of tool can provide insights into test results, identify areas that require attention, and track progress toward project goals. Additionally, it can generate detailed reports that help stakeholders make informed decisions and prioritize tasks. As the automation process scales up, a robust advisor reporting tool becomes increasingly important to ensure efficient and effective testing.


Incorporating mobile testing into the automation process becomes essential as the company expands to new markets and platforms. Initially, the first versions can be tested on simulators, but as the scope of mobile testing grows, the addition of mobile clouds becomes necessary. Private mobile clouds may be necessary to ensure data protection depending on the level of security required. A robust mobile testing strategy can help ensure the quality of software products across multiple platforms, leading to a better user experience and increased customer satisfaction levels
