The #1 book that got the most votes is “Understanding Machine Learning: From Theory to Algorithms” by Shai Shalev-Shwartz and Shai Ben-David. The book was first published in 2014 by Cambridge University aiming for students who want to learn the basics of Machine Learning and be familiar with all the important algorithms in this field.

The aim of this textbook is to introduce machine learning, and the algorithmic paradigms it offers, in a principled way. 2. Deep learning

The second book is “Deep Learning” by Ian Goodfellow, Yoshua Bengio, Aaron Courville, and Francis Bach (Editor). The book came out in 2016 and is considered one of the best books about Deep Learning. It took more than two and a half years to write this great book, which will explain you all the mathematics you need to deal with the Machine and Deep Learning algorithms later in the book.

This book, “ The Elements of Statistical Learning”, was one of the favourite books of our community members with many people recommending it. The book was published in 2001 by Trevor Hastie, Robert Tibshirani, and Jerome Friedman. Since 2001 it was updated several times and the last version was released in 2013.

The important advantage this book has on the others is the vast test and questions you have at the end of the book which could help you practice and improve your Machine Learning skills.

This is the first textbook on pattern recognition to present the Bayesian viewpoint. The book presents approximate inference algorithms that permit fast approximate answers in situations where exact answers are not feasible. It uses graphical models to describe probability distributions when no other books apply graphical models to machine learning. No previous knowledge of pattern recognition or machine learning concepts is assumed. Familiarity with multivariate calculus and basic linear algebra is required, and some experience in the use of probabilities would be helpful though not essential as the book includes a self-contained introduction to basic probability theory.

5. Pattern classification

Last but not least, is “Pattern classification” which was written by Richard O. Duda, Peter E. Hart, and David G. Stork in 1973 (it’s not a mistake). Later on, we got the 2nd Edition from Duda which has more updated information.
