A transistor is either on or off; a bit is either 1 or 0. This deterministic "tyranny of certainty" has fueled the digital revolution, giving us everything from word processors to the navigation systems that guide spacecraft. But as we stand on the precipice of a new era of artificial intelligence and complex system modeling, we are beginning to realize that our obsession with absolute certainty may be the very thing holding us back. To move forward, we may need to teach our silicon how to understand "maybe." The Efficiency of Doubt The human brain is the most sophisticated computer in existence, yet it is notoriously "noisy." Our neurons do not fire with the clockwork precision of a Pentium processor. Instead, the brain operates on a symphony of signals that are inherently probabilistic.
