New zealand may be small but its certainly mighty when it comes to the startup scene with a population of just over 5 million people the country has a history of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit that dates back to its earliest days as a british colony the geography of new zealand with its two main islands and numerous smaller ones has fostered a sense of isolation and independence that has led to a culture of selfsufficiency and problemsolving this has translated into a tech scene that is particularly focused on sustainability renewable energy and conservation the country has produced a number of successful startups including xero a cloudbased accounting software company that is now listed on the australian stock exchange and rocket lab a space exploration company that is making waves in the industry in addition to these homegrown success stories new zealand has attracted a number of international companies to set up shop in the country these include google amazon and microsoft all of whom have offices in the major cities of auckland and wellington historically new zealand has been known for its agricultural exports but in recent years the country has invested heavily in technology and education local universities such as the university of auckland and the university of canterbury have produced a number of successful entrepreneurs and the countrys living wage stands at 2000 per hour despite these positive developments new zealand does face some challenges in the startup scene the unemployment rate in the country is relatively high hovering around 49 and the countrys gdp growth rate has been relatively modest in recent years however with a strong focus on innovation sustainability and community the new zealand startup scene looks set to continue thriving in the years to come
